The 38 Essential Restaurants in Phoenix

"From their small, unpretentious Chandler restaurant, chef-owners Lulu Zhou and Sunny Zhao turn out the specialties of their native Liaoning Province in Northeastern China as well as popular dishes from other regions. Famous for their savory pies and juicy steamed pork dumplings (all hand-made), they also make ethereal tomato-flour ball soup (infinitely better than it sounds) and an earthy stir-fry of eggplant, potato and jalapeño." - Nikki Buchanan, Chris Malloy

I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience here! The food was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked — every dish was bursting with authentic Chinese flavors. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. The restaurant is clean, cozy, and has a warm atmosphere that makes you want to stay and enjoy your meal. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Google
Sometimes my reviews are far too complicated so I'll simplify this one. The food here is good no wait scratch that the food isn't good it's great. I think my favorite dish tonight was the cumin lamb it was nice and spicy I also had some pork bun that was very good and we had hot and sour soup and I'll tell you what the small soup comes in a big darn bowl so enjoy enjoy enjoy. The service was fantastic the food was fantastic and the only reason I say the ambiance wasn't perfect was I was a little hot and uncomfortable but I'm kind of a hot snob I like air conditioned places. This place wasn't like burning up it was 78 but I like it to be 69.

Machilus Lou

Google
Highly recommended! The quality here is far above other Chinese restaurants in this area. I live in Tucson, and if I come to Tempe for Chinese food, this is the only place I’ll choose. I ordered the stir-fried cabbage with tofu skin and the fish with pickled vegetables. Both were executed well based on their prices. Dishes came out quickly, portions were generous. My only minor complaint is that the table seating could be more comfortable.

Winnie Fung

Google
We ate here twice, and both times were impressed with the dishes. Prices are reasonable, and the flavors are well-balanced. The restaurant specializes in Hunan cuisine, and I highly recommend the steamed fish head or fish slices with chopped chili, grilled squid tentacles, stir-fried spicy beef with pickled peppers, and stir-fried wood ear mushrooms with yam.

Luthfi Dzulfikar

Google
I really enjoyed the fried rice here, especially the spicy beef version. It had just the right amount of heat and flavor, and unlike other places, it wasn’t overly oily, which I really appreciated. The atmosphere was also great, comfortable and welcoming, making it a nice spot to relax and enjoy a good meal. Definitely a place I’d come back to!

Google
Very welcoming when walking in. Food was good no complaints. The honey walnut shrimp was presenting that I didn’t even want to eat it lol . Great place to eat a they serve a lot. I’ll be returning

REBECCA CHEN

Google
Hands down the most authentic Hunan cuisine in metro Phoenix! The pickled chilli sauce is so fragrant and has depth of flavors…freshly made by the chef! will definitely come back for more!

Google
Great did, delicious very authentic Hunan style. Spicy and flavorful, highly recommend and will be returning again and again !!

Yelp
Pretty good food . I did a take out , sweet and sour pork ribs , spicy chicken ( it's spicy ) and beef green onions ( it's ok ) Decent portion . Total $52 for all 3 dishes . Flavorful and delicious.

Yelp
My family and I wanted to go to Chou's, but they were closed on the day we picked. But remembered this use to be the second location. Saw that their menu was similar and decided to give them a go. There was six of us but I got there early to get a table. I walked in no one greeted me and they were on their phone ignoring me, even though there was only two other tables in the establishment. Once they finally decided to acknowledge me they told me to pick a seat. I chose the big round table near the front. They got upset and told me I couldn't sit there. So I told them I had 6 in total, they gave me attitude and side eye as I continued to sit. The rest of my family came, we do have one vegan in out family so I ordered something from the menu and told them we couldn't do the brown sauce and to take out the meat, our server argued with me about it and wanted to put it in her way and it still came out wrong. We also ordered the cold meat appetizer, XLB, veg dumplings, spicy crispy chicken, toothpick lamb and spicy chili fish. The cold meat platter was literally 50% peanuts and only had two cuts of meat. Veg dumplings were pretty good. Our Pork XLB seemed cold and the first three of us ate it all in one bite and just thought maybe it was just sitting there for a while. Well the fourth person to eat it bit it in half and screamed, the pork wasn't cooked. So the other three kind of freaked out lol funny but not funny. ( only two of us ended up with stomach issues ) We told our server and she didn't seem like she cared much and just asked if we wanted another one. We respectfully declined. Their toothpick lamb was great cuts of lamb and we enjoyed the flavors. The crispy spicy chicken was actually pretty delicious as well. The chili fish had nice cuts of fish but could have been a bit more flavorful. Can't say if we will ever make the drive from Gilbert to come here again, but they need better staff.

Yelp
This is my go-to Chinese place and I can't believe I haven't written a review about it yet! We love dinning in due to the quick service and amazing fresh food. Our go-to plates are the Mongolian beef and the chicken stir fry noodles. I also love the Szechuan Chicken or Beef but it's really spicy so brace yourself if you want to try it. The Mongolian beef is the best dish by far tho! The sauce they are using, the super tender beef and the veggies cooked together just make it a wonderful plate. Definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
The dumplings were really great, the chili sauce made them even better. Very casual spot.

Yelp
菜都很香,很好吃,今天带对象再来吃!上次跟朋友来吃了藤椒牛肉和酸菜鱼配白米饭,那叫一个香啊!我框框乱炫不带停的,朋友让我吃慢点。 略......The dishes are all very fragrant and delicious. I'll bring my partner here to eat again today! Last time I came here with friends and had Sichuan pepper beef and pickled cabbage fish with white rice. It was so delicious! I was just showing off without stopping. My friend told me to eat slowly. ......

Yuting S.

Yelp
We order the spicy fish hot pot which is really good! Highly recommend this Chinese restaurant!

Yelp
Well we sat down and our order was twice cooked pork belly, spicy duck pot, vegetable dumplings, and, sour chicken. The twice cooked pork belly was very spicy couldn't finish it. The food is very authentic. The service is not that good. You have to ask for things that you want they don't offer you a spoon any sauces to go with your meals. I had to waitress down to get extra napkins. Other than that, the food is pretty good.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this restaurant after seeing a video on TikTok. I have long work days and usually have late dinners. I double and triple checked the hours on multiple sources, and everywhere said Fridays they close at 10:00. I walked in at 8:35 (90+ minutes before closing) and multiple tables were eating. They asked what I wanted and I said table for 1 please. They said oh we're closed. I was confused and said "oh the hours say 10. they ignored me. No other conversation or explanation. I would understand if they said oh something came up and we have to close early today. But no, nothing. Straight up ignored me. The weirdest thing. I'm not sure the reason, maybe they don't want to sit just one diner, maybe because I do not look like their typical customer. But wanted to share my experience so people can make informed decisions and not waste their time driving over as they make up their own hours. I attached a photo of the door displaying the hours.

Yelp
Terry the server worthy the round face, is not friendly had an attitude. Like rolls her eyes in annoyance in front of you. Min Yong is my favourite the nicest server. I keep hearing from Chinese that they like this Tempe location better than the Chandler one. I am eating the Spicy Fish Fillet. Soooooo spicy I had to ask for a cup of ice. We ordered pork belly with string beans in clay pot but it was too bland for me, so we sent it back. I didn't think food was good enough to come back.
google avatar

Sam H.

Yelp
Made it back to this place to try some different dishes. We will ordered the standard appetizers: Beef Roll & Spicy Tofu skin. But for our main dishes, we tried the Szechuan Spicy chicken & twice cooked pork belly. The spicy chicken dish is lightly battered and then sautéed with a lot of Szechuan peppers & peppercorns, then dusted with spicy chili powder. The twice cooked pork belly was seasoned well and mixed with vegetables (I believe Napa & leeks) in a light spicy sauce. Everything was seasoned well and prepared well.

Yelp
I got some delivery to my hotel while in town for a conference. All the food was really good! I got dumplings and fried rice and a noodle dish. All fresh and well prepared. The one big downside-- they didn't include even a single pack of soy sauce in my delivery.... I'd seen a mention of something like this in someone else's comments.... It was super annoying because I really would have liked just a wee bit more soy sauce with the rice... oh well...
google avatar

Lois C.

Yelp
Service was fine, nothing amazing and nothing horrible, just what you'd expect. Food: Shrimp Yang Chow fried rice - good with large pieces of shrimp but small portion Salt and pepper fish - it had a bit of mala powder and was a bit spicy which was great Soup dumplings - they were ok, skin a bit thick but still decent Shrimp chow mein - just ok, tasted like noodles stir fried in soy sauce. Can definitely skip and make this at home Pork with jalapeños and green peppers - good but very salty All this food and they brought one small bowl of rice out. We had to continually ask for more rice. I would have preferred a larger bowl like most restaurants do but appreciate the no waste they're probably going for. Overall food was ok but quite salty.

Yelp
Witnessed an employee eating from customers to go orders. This review is a 3 because I'd like to preface this by stating that I love this restaurant. I've come here religiously since 2019 when it was called chous and I will continue to go here. But I would like to state that one time a few months ago my then partner and I went in to get our usual food and were essentially the only people in the restaurant. I turned around because my dumplings were taking longer than usual and witnessed a worker picking with her bare hands and eating food out of a take out box that had been put in the window. I didn't want to make assumptions because I was like, "maybe it's her food" but I thought it was weird because she was picking bits and pieces and eating them with her hands, so I kept watching. Not only did I watch her lid the box, and put it in a to go bag but I also watched her give it to the guy who was picking it up. I'm not sure if she still works there but that really grossed us out, and now I don't think I'd ever order take out from there again. I only eat inside when I go, and the food is wonderful, but that experience with that specific worker gave me the ick.

Yelp
Plenty of seating in this new Chinese restaurant located in Tempe. I enjoyed the fried rice and soup dumplings. Here's some photos of my take out order. Friendly customer service, food is cooked to order therefore expect a wait. It was about 20 minutes for my order. Suggest calling ahead for pick up.

Yelp
I wanted to stop for some dim sum after landing at sky harbor and this place popped up. Staff was friendly and the menu was extensive. My favorite was the Szechuan tan tan noodles, but we also had some pork dumplings and a brisket dish. Loved the food and will be back to try more.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food, good atmosphere, definitely a step above most Chinese restaurants in flavor and preparation. I had the Cumin Pork, and it was delightful. Definitely going back!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try here for a while and it honestly was so much food for a such a good price. You cannot go wrong with dumplings or anything on their menu. Our service was insanely quick too and I had lots to take home after! Good date night spot possibly.
google avatar

Sharon T.

Yelp
In the heart of tempe... near downtown ASU is authentic Sichuan food! You can't get this confused with regular take out chinese or Hong Kong style.. The food caters to northern style chinese food known for their spices. Price is perfect and even enough for 5 people we had plenty of leftovers. My favorite was the dragon eggplant and the hot pot with cucumber. Definitely will be back knowing everyone in my family loved it and it fit our bill.
google avatar

Yelp
King fu kitchen is the real deal. I have travelled many times to China and this is very authentic western Chinese food. When they put three chilli peppers on the menu next to the dish they mean it!! We had cumin beef and triple pepper chicken. Both very different and exploding with taste

Christian C.

Yelp
The food is always spot on. I usually get the szechuan spicy chicken, and it's always fantastic. A more casual, laid back place, but whoever I take there is always really pleased with the food.

Yelp
Wowww, found another good spot, I'm From LA and I'm approves this Great Spot, And Reasonable prices, Xie2

Yelp
We had the juicy pork dumplings, toothpick lamb and piggy ears. The food was delicious. The ambiance was homey. We look forward to our next visit.
google avatar

Katrina C.

Yelp
The food was great, me and my partner shared the bbq pork buns and the Xio long bao. Enough for two and he eats a lot. Service was very nice. Music was very calming. I like that the menus have pictures and the staff will answer any questions. My boyfriend said very authentic.
google avatar

Ken F.

Yelp
A nice traditional Chinese restaurant in the heart of Tempe. They have many traditional dishes that are non-american Chinese food. They have those as well. Everything is cooked to order. Staff is on point and knowledgeable on all of their food. Large selection of items at a decent price with large portions. Definitely come and check it out if you want more than just American style Chinese
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
The curry chicken is good even with the different variety food we got. The service was nice and helpful. 10/10 recommend on going again
google avatar

Anastasia N.

Yelp
Ordered doordash from this place the other day and the food was so good. Got the fried noodles and it was one of the best I've had in AZ. Also tried their boba drinks since there was a BOGO deal but they were mediocre. Also really liked the packaging they used since it was all very high quality.
google avatar

Kaelyn G.

Yelp
Amazing! The best meal we've had in a while. The spicy cabbage was so flavorful. Lettuce wraps and spicy szechuan chicken were also delicious. There was a short 10-15 min wait when we ate dinner there on a Friday night. Service was quick, efficient, and friendly. Restaurant was a typical chinese food ambiance, but very clean. We can't wait to return.

Yelp
Chou's Kitchen is easily one of the best authentic Chinese restaurants in the Valley (might I say THE best?!) and consistently nails their food quality every time. No visit to Chou's is complete without an order of juicy pork dumplings. Their soup dumplings are pretty hard to beat -- make sure to dip yours in their black vinegar sauce! If you're looking for a totally underrated dish, order their fried rice. Don't let the light color fool you -- it's sooo flavorful with plenty of 'wok hei,' for all my Cantonese foodies out there. This past visit was my first time trying their tofu with century eggs and I was pretty delighted. Great appetizer for all the garlic lovers out there -- and a great intro to century eggs for any newbies with an adventurous palette. Keep in mind that service can be slow, but they are friendly and always work as quickly as possible with the amount of staff they have.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Fish in hot chili oil. Delicious! They put noodles in it... I love that Walnut shrimp - delicious! Good service

Rita L.

Yelp
I usually go to Chou's Kitchen but this place is right across from my apartment so I wanted to give it and try and I regret it. My food was actually disgusting and the employees are super rude and don't take criticism. I got the green scallion pancake which was actually disgusting. I love green scallion pancakes and get it at every chinese restaurant but this was literally inedible and on the menus it says you get 2 pieces and I only got one. I literally ate one bite and had to spit it out because it was so bad. When I said something they were so rude and weren't receptive to any of the criticisms and still charged me for it. I also got the orange chicken and you can literally taste that it was frozen or reheated. The noodles were okay and the tofu was undercooked and under seasoned along with the eggplant. The salt and pepper fish was not salt and pepper fish at all. Go to Chou's Kitchen instead!! The staff there is so kind and the food is DELICIOUS!

Malika L.

Yelp
The food here is honestly so mid and is some of the worst Chinese food I've tried. I've never left a bad review before but I had to say something because this place is flooded with such good reviews and I don't know why. This place used to be a Chous but they closed and rebranded. If you're craving Chinese food you should just go to the Chous Chandler location, the food is so much better.
google avatar

Cathal B.

Yelp
A great solid, authentic Chinese restaurant in Tempe. The three dishes I thought were amazing were the Pigs Ear (cold dish), spicy fish fillet, and the dumplings (Xiao long bao - with the soup inside). The mapo tofu was excellent but maybe not as unique as the three dishes above. We also had beef noodles and green onion pancakes (Cong youbing) which were so good. My personal advice if you come to a family run place like this, be adventurous and order some of their specialities, they do these so well!! Service and ambience are all good - it's a small family run operation, everyone be nice and enjoy the food, that's the most important and impressive thing!! Highly recommended, just like their other location in Chandler.
google avatar

Mariana K.

Yelp
Best vegetable dumplings! They're made with mushrooms, veggies, and maybe some soy protein, and they're bomb. I've only gotten takeout but it looks like a nice space inside, and employees are always helpful. They're one of the only places who has actually made my food spicy when I request it. I've also had the braised tofu and mushrooms over greens (I'm vegetarian), both were delicious and big portions. Thanks!

Rebecca H.

Yelp
I had a simple shrimp fried rice. The peas were still cold, the shrimp was only luke-warm. The dish had no flavor. They were very nice and prepared another one for me - this time with soy sauce, as they don't add that when they cook it. The second time around was no better. It wasn't the lack of soy sauce, though. I've had excellent fried rice without soy sauce many times. It was the overall dish. No flavor, Luke warm, and only partially cooked frozen peas. I was so disappointed because the reviews were so good. I guess my standard for Chinese food is higher than those other reviewers. Or did I come on an off day?
google avatar

Joe 9.

Yelp
This place was MUCH better when it was Chou's. I had the "Hunan Style Spicy Duck Pot". It had good flavor, very spicy, but just one cut up duck neck, and a few very small pieces of duck meat in it! For $17.98 I expected some decent pieces of duck meat in it. It is a "Duck Pot" after all. The girl's at the register were not very friendly when I picked up my $70.00 to go order. I'll drive to Chou's in Chandler from now on!

Hm C.

Yelp
Food was tasty. Menu doesn't seem much different than Chou's Kitchen which was also tasty.
google avatar

Kambiz K.

Yelp
Chou's kitchen came to us as a recommendation as our other favorite dumpling place was closed. I didn't think their food was fresh. I also tasted that they rested entirely on MSG carrying the backbone of the flavor and for that reason I can't really recommend eating here for those two reasons. I rather skip on dumplings than go here.
google avatar

Elliot S.

Yelp
This place should remove all these good reviews and start from scratch as a new business. The name is no longer Chou's Kitchen, the food is completely different, and there is new management. The food isn't even comparable to how it was before. Therefore I am removing my 5 star review.
google avatar

Sarina P.

Yelp
Great service, scrumptious food! The chicken in garlic sauce was spiced than I anticipated, but the flavor was spot on! The pork dumplings were incredible. Yummy!!!! Great experience.

Yelp
We decided to give this place a try on our last day of vacation and am so glad we did literally everything we got was 10/10 . And the service was amazing from all the staffs , the restaurant it self is very clean , not very big but they did have round tables to sit big parties . I didn't get a chance to take pictures as my kids were using my phone but we got the hot and numbing combination which was so good but super spicy so if you like really spicy food you would love it , it came with combination of veggies and meat & fish , it went great with white rice 10/10. We also got the sweet n sour pork which was so delicious 10/10, and the house fried noodles was so yummy as well . Soup dumping 10/10, egg chives pocket 10/10 . I am from China and this restaurant's food definitely reminded me of the food in China . I will definitely be back whenever we are in town .

Yelp
If you wanna go for authentic Chinese food, this is the right place. Speaking from a Chinese's perspective, I could tell the food was made by chefs from China for sure. It suits my appetite just right and god, how much do I miss the taste from home. What they put in to make those food were just right. If you are a Chinese food lover, this is a must to go in Tempe area. The vegetables are very light-sauced but giving enough taste so it's not bland at all. Calamari is a surprise just to get to taste the right salt and pepper spice in it. It's spicy and Szechuan style. Crunchy and chewy to every bite you have on it. The Spicy chicken is beyond good. They floured and starch-coated the chicken before frying it and it's how it's made to the right crispy way. Then they stir-fried it with peppers and peanuts. It gives out the heat and "wok hey" from the dish and you know what, that's what we called authentic! Service is good and the interior design is modern. Love to see they have this place very clean. It's one important factor I value a lot in a Chinese restaurant. Def a come-back place!

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday evening around 6pm with a party of 5. No wait at all which I was surprised as it's right on ASU's campus. I've heard this place is known for their soup dumplings/bao in general. My friends all agreed that they tasted really good. I also agree. For $11 you get 10 soup dumplings which is reasonable, and they're juicy. Good pork taste and fresh when we got them so they were really good. I also got hot and sour soup which is something I normally don't get as soup in Chinese restaurants is normally overpriced, but it was a good portion and had a respectable amount of egg, carrots, mushrooms. Overall good quick spot to get traditional Chinese food. They have a pretty big menu that has more traditional fare but nothing Cantonese/HK style so keep that in mind.

Loc T.

Yelp
I've been there numerous time! The spicy beef shank noodles is the best!!! I ordered take out last week, we had the spicy beef noodles, won tons in chili sauce, n cucumber salad all delicious!
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
We were looking to order some Chinese takeout to celebrate Chinese New Year. This place was highly recommended on the Phoenix New Times, so we decided to order on Uber Eats. This place has more authentic dishes than your typical Chinese restaurant. We ordered some steam juicy pork dumplings, which are their soup dumplings. They came out perfectly and soupy (which means a lot for takeout since usually the soup dumplings are less soupy if they aren't served fresh). The dumplings with pork and pickled vegetable were very good too (but those aren't soup dumplings). I'd also highly recommend the stir-fried wood ear mushroom with Shanyao. This dish was really tasty and healthy!

Stephanie L.

Yelp
Viewed their menu on their website and placed our order via phone. Our order was ready within 15-20 minutes. Dumplings with Pork & Napa Cabbage(10), $6.98: If you don't specify the default is steamed dumplings which is never my go to (but more traditional). I could tell that they are made in house as they were not perfectly uniform in size and the dough was thicker than premade dumpling wrappers. They did not come with a sauce. They were juicy but not the best dumplings I've ever had. Yangzhou Fried Rice, $9.98: Pale in color and soft, a stark contrast to fried rice you will get at most restaurants. Good imo because I don't love super salty soy-saucey fried rice. There were pieces of shrimp, beef, ham, and chicken throughout and standard frozen vegetables (carrots, peas, corn). Kung Pao Chicken, $11.98: Comes with a side of white rice. Upon unbagging our goods, the boxes were greasy from the spilled sauce. Messy. Although it was advertised as spicy, it was not. The flavor was good though!
google avatar

Patherine C.

Yelp
It was just okay. Decided to try them since they replaced Chou's. I really was expecting more flavor. The XLB had no soup and dumpling shell was thick. Sichuan chicken was good but I've had better. And the sizzling triple pepper beef was bland. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. The service overall was okay. Ask and you shall receive. Interior was fine. It was clean.

Irv W.

Yelp
Had the triple pepper sizzling chicken. Spicy for sure but very tasty. Just avoid biting into the Serrano hot peppers (or whatever they use). Red and green bell peppers are not as spicy. Although the dish is quite punchy. Enjoyed it. Large portions. Could feed two so plan to take home leftovers. They're great the next day.

Yelp
So sad that one of our favorite restaurants in town had changed. When we last went it was still called "Chou's Kitchen" but quiet obviously the menu changed and many classics were gone such as 豆丁丁丁,酸辣粉 etc. Even the existing items do not taste the same and in general aren't as good as before. We now do not have a reason to go back as I think the change of staff and ownership is a degrade on the quality of food.
google avatar

Bekah S.

Yelp
This place seems like a little hole in the wall, but once you order and try the food you'll quickly realize it's a hidden gem! This is the absolute BEST Chinese food I've ever had! Here's what we order and what I recommend: Schezuan Beef Cumin Beef Stir Fry Beef Noodles Beef pie Pork potstickers Pork dumplings Cucumber with garlic sauce Everything is absolutely divine! Once you try it I promise you'll look for ways to come back often.
