Conveyor Belt Sushi Arrives in Midtown - Eater Houston

"Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, a conveyor belt spot serving up small plates, has officially opened its doors at Midtown’s Mid-Main development. The restaurant announced its arrival on Facebook, bringing the grand total of Houston-area Kura outposts to three. The chain currently operates restaurants in Westchase and Sugar Land, but the Midtown outpost marks Kura’s first expansion inside the loop. Later this year, a fourth location is set to arrive at the Katy Grand development in Katy." - Amy McCarthy

Google
Lots of options. You would need to order most of what you want. Then it takes 7-10 min. When I went, most of the revolving items were empty. There is not a waiter and I hated the machine. I ate a lot of food, and still wasn't full. It was pretty pricey.

David Verret

Google
I had to go to a couple of appointments close to downtown. I had a little time to kill between 2 of them and just wanted something quick and to snack on. The food here was superb. Definitely quality ingredients. The little robot that brings you your drinks was pretty cool too. The staff were very attentive. The idea of just ordering a couple of pieces at a time is perfect when you aren't super hungry so you don't over eat. Service is pretty dang fast too

Leslie Mariscal

Google
I love going somewhere and sitting down straight to eat. It’s a very entertaining place, usually busy, but really good. You can pick from the food rolling by, or order from the screen and it comes right to you from a different conveyer belt. You also get a cute prize after a certain number of plates, and a little robot blasting music brings you your drinks. I love it there.

Daniela Valencia

Google
Love this place. Everything is outdated you order on a screen and the belt delivers it to you. The robot delivers the drinks! We love loved it. The area is definitely gentrified would be weary to come at night as girl.

Google
I punched the Taiyaki Ice Cream, for the experience of it. and I must say. I was not disappointed. I also like how they placed ice at the bottom of my container to keep my ice cream cold. I give them a "A" for Thoughtfulness. I will return for the whole overall sushi experience. And must I say, very nice, quaint, and peaceful environment. 10/10 highly recommend. Sorry no photos.

Google
Todd was the best in house manager I’ve seen actively make sure the patrons are enjoying themselves. I’m old school and love when managers visit tables and see how customers are enjoying themselves place. Having a restaurant on Maine street is difficult because of the homeless population, and while we did have an encounter in the restaurant literally behind us. Todd interacted with the homeless woman with class, and the utmost respect to not only her but the restaurant itself. It’s the first time I’ve ever eaten at a rotating sushi restaurant and I will 10/10 come again. The crunchy hand roll with soy paper was delicious and perfect serving size. The staff kept the place clean, and the restaurant had a good selection of food. If you’re into sushi and Japanese cuisine, this is the perfect introductory location to get started. It’s close to a parking lot and you could even take the metro train to get here.

Jonathan Reichel

Google
Food is always good. Not the best sushi but far removed from being the most expensive so it works out. I want to shout out to Tod, he was my server and he was absolutely fantastic! I wanted for nothing lol

Pierce Adkins

Google
We were skeptical at first, but this place is legit. Baby Pierce even gave his seal of approval. Sashimi is great, good roll selection, and it’s fun to watch your drink order rocket across the belt as you mingle with family or friends. Plus, Robots bring you stuff to your table and sing to you!

Yelp
This place is so fun to try out and a great experience for any group of people. Watching the revolving sushi is so mesmerizing It can get a little packed, but if you get there a little early for dinner (before 6ish) you should have no problem getting seated right away. There's parking in a garage in the little shopping area, but they don't validate. The metro does stop by right there if you can take that. There are a lot of different options if you do or don't like raw fish, as well as the robots that bring you drinks are a vibe.

Yelp
super fun super cool went during the mha collab, got a lanyard and keychains cause my bigback ate alot cutest service robot that serves drinks and other orders love this place! totally recommend the ambiance felt really chill overall was comfortable there

Yelp
Dirty, overpriced, and tiny - avoid this place and save your money. CX was good tho.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food, very good prices, perfect for a fun time with friends after a hard day at school, or work. Casual and friendly atmosphere and exemplary service.
google avatar

Briann R.

Yelp
Sushi isn't that quality. None of the rolls were that good. It's sushi, and it's a good price. But not great. Service is spotty because they utilize robot wait staff.

Alma L.

Yelp
We used to go all the way to Kura in West Chase area, we are so lucky we have it now "around the corner" we love Kura! The Taiyaki Ice Cream and hot green tea! Oh my
google avatar

Anne F.

Yelp
There isn't much service since it's conveyer belt sushi. The otoro was questionable. The food isn't great but the prices are cheap so you essentially get what you pay for. Don't know if we'd be back since there are soooo many sushi places in Houston worth trying and this is also a chain.
google avatar

Corianne O.

Yelp
I love Kura. It's fast-food sushi in a fun way. I bring people who swear they hate sushi because you get like 2 pieces a plate, and they always have fun getting it off the conveyer belt. It gives them a chance to try new rolls outside of the shaggy dog in a fun and affordable way. I'm not posting pictures because the last time I went was at 3pm after lunch rush and everything was slightly old. I still will go again, just know the best time for quality is typically at rush times.
google avatar

Thuy P.

Yelp
Price has increasing quite a lot but it's always fun to be here. Every plate start at $3.25 and goes up depend on what you order They even have the robot serving you drink Food was OK. Of course not the best sushi in town and surely not cheapest neither.
google avatar

Kalia A.

Yelp
Great concept but I think it's a little bit overpriced for the amount of food. We didn't try any of the raw seafood but the sushi was good and the place was really chill. It was pretty cool how a robot would drop off the drinks but then we weren't sure if we asked for refills from someone or order again. I think the screens need some cleaning overall the place was neat and the people were helpful!

Yelp
I was a die hard fan when Kura opened. I used to work in the area and would go probably at least twice a month. Have been back recently twice and the quality is noticeably gone down. In general sushi not as well made either and was falling apart just when trying to pick up. I love negitoro and both times I was here the peices on the belt were grey instead of the vibrant pink of fresh negitoro. Benefit of the doubt that maybe these pieces had been circling a little too long I ordered from the menu, once nigiri and the other time handroll. Both times it was still that grey goop. Unappetizing and with a fishy smell. I've been to the Westchase location several times and the quality is still great so clearly not a sourcing issue. I will be sticking to other locations. It's not worth the parking to venture to the Midtown location for worse quality food.
google avatar

Rajit S.

Yelp
Food is pretty good. Service is OK. Ordering system is wonky (we kept having to send back drinks that we hadn't ordered)

Yelp
This is my first time trying a revolving sushi restaurant and I absolutely loved it! I had a few beers and picked what I want from the conveyor belt which is constantly revolving, and there was plenty of options! I think a lot of people like the robot that delivers your drinks to your table because it had a catchy little song as it ran to both notify you of its presence, and to create a happier atmosphere. It took me a minute to figure out how to get the sushi out of the conveyor belt plate/container, but once I got the hang of it, it's pretty simple. Before each new dish, there is a little sign that has the picture and the name of the item that proceeds it. Each plate on the conveyor belt is $3.20, but there's also a touchscreen above you where you can order kitchen items, desserts, and your beverages.. which come out through a port just about the conveyor belt (excluding the drinks.. the robot or a sever gives you that). The screen also helps keep count of your plates, which is dropped into a slot right in front of you. One thing I really liked that I don't see often in sushi restaurants is, their Wassabi wasn't that horseradish paste that you typically see at most places !!
google avatar

Lynn M.

Yelp
This was good. Everything is done electronically. They charge you per plate and if you want to order off the revolving machine you can do so on the tablet. I ordered pork ramen separate and it was not that good. I would stick to the revolving sushi instead. We also ordered a spicy salmon hand roll but got a shrimp one delivered. We noticed how busy it was so decided to eat it. I would definitely pass on this next time.

Yelp
From the food to the customer service all I can say is WOW! Truly an amazing variety of food and products available at this establishment and I would highly HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi and the aesthetic of a sushi bar . Most definitely will be back in the future (:. P.S. If you eat 15 plates you will earn a reward so eat away!!
google avatar

Abir C.

Yelp
A very fun eating experience, for sure. It was sort of a bucket list thing to try sushi from a conveyer belt after having seen it in Japanese cartoons and anime as a kid. The quality of food overall was good, but not great. However, the novelty of the conveyor belt as well as a robot waiter made it a fun experience.
google avatar

Oris B.

Yelp
Kura customer service was top notch! Servers were friendly and helpful! The restrooms were clean and well maintained. I purchased various dishes including a side dish of karaage and raspberry tea that was delivered by a robot, very cool! Not to mention, the endless choices of sushi. Overall, I highly recommend a visit Kura if you seeking a good sushi and chill atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
For what it is - this place is good! I'm not expecting the highest quality sushi since to me this is sort of a fast food type of sushi. I enjoy some of the nigiri like the garlic ponzu salmon and seared scallop with spicy mayo, but the rice part always falls apart with the nigiris. Also, they unfortunately didn't have the seared scallop when I went last time. My favorite roll here is the crunchy roll. This place would be good for kids or picky eaters to try sushi for the first time in a fun setting and cheap way!

Sebastian G.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to eat here I showed up with my friend an hour before they closed and we walked in and they told us that they were closed already and it was only 8 o'clock because they decided to "close early"today and their were quite a few groups eating still so we ABSOLUTELY do not recommend this place at all
google avatar

Yelp
It was a fun experience. The establishment was nice and clean. It was all automated from the beginning to the bc end. The sushi were delivered to you via the belt. The robot delivered your water. And you ordered some food that are not on the belt and check out using the computer attached to your station. The served only intersected with me when he introduced me to my seat, show me how the system work, refill water, and give me the check. That's about it, the only time I see a human. Other than it, you see no one! It's all automated! The sushi is average at best. Nothing special, nothing impressed. The sushi are the most common, the cheapest kind of sushi in other restaurant In conclusion, it's fun to experience it, but the food cannot compared to other sushi place ( taste very blend and can't compared to other sushi place. Price was reasonable. I ate around 15 plates and only cost me about $60.

Yelp
SERVICE ..... Why??? Walk in for lunch at 2pm, pretty empty, host is just rude, doesn't give us enough chopsticks, or soy sauce plates, sat us down at a dirty table, when I asked if I could get the table cleaned (sanitation is not their thing, food remnants all over the table with liquid stains) eye roll, and additional place settings, I get another eye roll, first time at this restaurant, he doesn't explain anything, I even order lemonade through him which never comes, I'm messing around with the computer screen and figure out how to order a lemonade. I literally have to get up for additional chopsticks, I have to get up for additional soy sauce plates, I have to get up for ginger and wasabi, I am literally doing everything myself, they never come around to your table even when you hit the call button. When the check comes, I ask for a server option on the screen pad, to get takeaway boxes, why did a female come to the table, I asked I said hey, can we split this two ways for our party? She said I don't know if we can do that, when I asked her for 2 boxes, she rolled her eyes...excuse me I paid for this food, sorry to bug you to not waste food I paid for, staff does nothing here, you get everything from a conveyor belt and a robot that deliveries your drinks. It doesn't matter if I was excited to try this restaurant and I'm from out of state, or excited to bring my 4 year old god daughter to a revolving sushi restaurant, or if the food was decent or good, or inexpensive, it was 100% ruined by the service, the staff, rudeness, lack of cleanness, not worth it, I can only imagine when the restaurant is busy, there were maybe 20 people in the restaurant.

Yelp
Cool concept of the revolving sushi bar. Food is good and had lots of options to try. Service was fast and good

Yelp
Good service, good food and friendly staff Really recommend for sushi & it is a fun experience

Yelp
A couple of folks have asked how I could rate Kura almost I was highly as I rated Kato Robato. Let me be clear, Kura is not in the same class as Kato Robota, Uchi, or any of the other high end Sushi restaurants in Houston - but then again, it doesn't claim to be. What it does offer is reasonably priced fresh fast-food sushi in a clean environment. I think Kura is one of the better restaurants to achieve their intended goals, and, in my humble opinion, it's worth a four star rating. Still good, still worth trying.
google avatar

Joanna Q.

Yelp
I've been here 2-3 times with my boyfriend within the last year and the experiences have been good. I've noticed that most Kura locations put out Tuna that is going a little brown and I definitely stay away from those plates. Otherwise, the service here is great and the line is never too long. I love the concept of the moving sushi belt and whenever you order the plates, they usually come more fresh, which we appreciate. We ordered tuna sashimi and it came very fresh (see photo). Will definitely be back whenever I crave sushi for a great price. My favorites are their new halibut dish, their (fresh) tuna, their seared albacore, and the sea bream. The eel is good too but sometimes is cold.
google avatar

Deborah N.

Yelp
Hmmm, I may be a bit biased here as my mom ran a sushi franchise inside a popular chain grocery store...but true sushi aficionados recognize that the good stuff is what's inside the sushi roll, not what's on the outside. With that, Kura failed to deliver and was a bit disappointing to say the least. Their rolls were mediocre, not fresh at all, and the first roll I grabbed, the rice was dry and hard...the rolls had more rice than ingredients and even with the nigiri options, we only ate the fish and not the rice... I realize times are hard, and finding any area or way to cut costs can help alleviate the financial burdens of a business, but when you begin to sacrifice quality ingredients and freshness, and being generous with the ingredients, it shows. The concept is a really cool one! Love the robots that bring you your beverages, and once you hit 15x plates, you get a SURPRISE! Ball that contains temporary tattoos, a sticky note, or some other fun item. You can also order directly from your monitor/screen by your table, but ours was faulty and had a few issues and was very sensitive. My two favorites: The nigiri options like the blue fin toro, and the yellowtail, and a few others were well worth it at $2.90 a plate! If it's not a sushi roll or nigiri, the price is different, but all sushi options are $2.90 no matter the color of the plate. The mochi ice cream was a great way to end the meal. Refreshing, cold, and lightly sweet. Had the food tasted more fresh and the amount of ingredients used not so stingy, I'd probably return.

Yelp
Great good and great service. They had everything we liked. My son says this place is cool.
google avatar

Mariah M.

Yelp
Just tried Kura today and we had a fun experience! The hostess took us to our seats and showed us how to grabbed the plates (DONT try to grab the whole thing lol). We quite a few options and everything was quick and tasty. Our favorites were the mackerel and red snapper nigiri. Each plate of sushi is about 3.20 and comes with 2-4 pieces, depending on what you grab. We also had the Cher's and Hokkaido tart and both were good. They also have those cool robot waiter things for your drinks. We will definitely come back!
google avatar

Adam H.

Yelp
Omg this place is so cool...and it's not just one conveyor (I won't ruin the surprise but be sure to order al a carte once or more :)) First time checking a conveyor sushi place out. It was awesome and fun. Sushi was decent too and they had ramen as well! Pro tip: great place for a date. There are a ton of cool bars in the area to check out after.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Fun, adventurous if you wanna try new things. It's basically a self service thing but in general 10/10
google avatar

Nate C.

Yelp
Not as awesome as I remember it being. Service is nonexistent. Sanitation is neglected. The selection is disappointing. Really all that remains is the novelty of the conveyor belt, and that doesn't linger beyond the first couple of visits. It's a shame to see it decline.
google avatar

Travis B.

Yelp
Fun gimmick that was a little dirty, and kinda pricey. With a lot of the good cheap sushi places closed, it's not a bad place that's left, but parking here is a bit challenging. When we went they were out of almost all of their drinks. I don't know how you run out of everything but Mr Pibb. The California Roll is made with like a tuna salad consistency crab meat, Service was ok, but it's a conveyor belt sushi place that was out of most drinks, the only way to screw up service is to accidentally stab you in the middle of eating.
google avatar

Mandisa N.

Yelp
My first time at a revolving sushi bar and it was such an exciting experience. When you walk in, there's a tablet you have to sign in to and the wait time was pretty short. We were taken to our table and the waiter gave us a rundown (he was talking kinda fast, so not sure I caught everything ). There's such a wide variety of sushi and it was super fun getting to try new things. Their New York cheesecake is scrumptious; 10/10 would recommend. Would definitely love to come back in the future.

Elijah G.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the little robot that was going around was so cute. Recommend the Eel.
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
Literally so fun and high tech. This is a perfect option for people who hate waiting for food. More surprisingly/ the quality is AMAZING - so many variations of sushi to choose from and you can really portion control here. Absolutely so fun with a small group or even solo dining! Final note, little robots deliver drinks in the restaurant which really freaked me out haha.
google avatar

Lacy P.

Yelp
Went here for lunch and what a cool experience. There is a tablet on a stand when you first walk in where you enter your name and party size. After checking in there is a guest waiting area. We were a party of two and were seated within eight minutes. The waiter asked if we have been here before, we told him, "no" and he politely explained how everything worked. He even allowed me to practice opening the try holder that he held in his hand so I would properly be prepared to grab a plate off the conveyer belt. For drinks we ordered a lemonade and an iced green tea which was brought to us by a robot. My husband did not care for his green tea. One thing that that was pretty good was the Inari. The deep-fried skin was a good mixture of sweet and salty. Once you are done eating you insert your plate in a shoot between the belt and your table. As you insert your plates there is a screen at the top of your table that keep counts. On that same screen you are able to order items that you are not coming around to your table, drinks, soups, other small bites, pay for your meal, call for help and a prize that you can purchase that swirls down to your table in a round ball. We noticed that there is also a bar area as well. Sushi was okay but this is a place you come for the experience.
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
Love the concept of the revolting belt, get your food pretty quickly. There have been times that there weren't any sushi on the belt and you had to order and wait. The sushi is pretty good and the price is decent. I like to bring people here because they love the belt and drink robot. The wait can take a while, best to go at non peak times, can be anywhere from arriving on a weekday at 1130 with no wait time to Sunday afternoon 2+ hour wait. I can never join waitlist on their app, always says it's not available. But there is a live wait time on the app to give you an idea of the current wait time
google avatar

Yelp
I really, really loved the Kura in Westchase! (see my review). So this weekend, I was excited to check out the Kura in Midtown. Unfortunately, it was not as great. Unlike Westchase, where we arrived to a clean table with a number of sharing plates, forks, and wasabi, at Midtown we got the bare minimum plates, no forks, and no wasabi. We went at prime dinnertime (6:30 or so), and when we arrived, the conveyor belt was nearly sushi-less. As a result, we headed for the made-to-order plates from the monitor, but were let down when the crispy rice plates were pretty stale. The Spicy Crunchy Taco was excellent -- unfortunately, it was very messy, and the ice cream shop-style cheap napkins were a poor fit for the occasion. The Midtown Kura redeemed itself in the end with the Japanese Soy Milk Donuts, which were just as good as those in Westchase. I really like the Kura concept, but the execution at the Midtown location was not the best. It's worth the trip out to Westchase to enjoy Kura in all its greatness.

Kate H.

Yelp
Good selection but definitely a bit pricey , for a full meal of only sushi totaled to $50+. Will say their crab was definitely a miss and was extremely fishy / salty , however the smoked anything was amazing.

Claudia D.

Yelp
The smell of amonia and very strong cleaning chemicals. That is the first impression you get as soon as you get into this restaurant. It hits you like a ton of bricks to the point where you wonder if perhaps they are closed and they are doing deep cleaning. Nope. The sense of hunger transforms into disgust as you realize your eating experience is going to be impregnated with this smell. As you eat, the smell remains but you notice it less, since you are ingesting the food, which was done sloppily. The service? Indifferent. The resolve? To not come back. This restaurant does a disservice to the sushi experience.
google avatar

Claudine L.

Yelp
Cool concept, not a bad seat in the restaurant. I was able to fit the car seat in a booth because the outer bench was able to move. The table was pretty clean, however there were some gnats near the plate slot. As far as the food it was just okay. The ramen had good flavor, however the noodles were slightly gummy. I had the tantanmen ramen and my husband had the miso. For 8 a bowl not sure if it was worth the price, but I would eat it again. We tried the Golden Crunchy Roll, real crab California roll, shrimp avocado roll, crispy rice w/spicy salmon, and the Japanese style soy milk donuts. The most important note is the rice did not have any flavor!!! It did not taste like sushi rice. Also the rice was very crumbly. The crispy rice dish was almost too crispy. What made the rolls taste better was the complimentary pickled ginger and soy sauce that was on the table. I also had an iced green tea and it did not taste like it. Absolutely no flavor so I sent it back. I normally drink my tea without sugar so that was not the issue, it just tasted like dirty water. The waitress was nice enough to take it off the bill. If you are looking for a different experience then the place is pretty cool but if you are looking for high quality rolls this is not it. May return ion the area for a cheap lunch.

Yelp
This was overall, an okay experience. I'd recommend it to adults bringing children, people who love being served by talking robots (!), or people who like to be left alone instead of interacting with staff. The offerings from the conveyor belt weren't super fresh or varied. However, the custom ordered food came to the table quickly and was spot on every time. Fresh, beautiful, and flavorful enough. The service by machine had some glitches, so we had to flag down a real person a couple times for drinks. But the human staff was always friendly, and tried to be helpful. This is NOT the place for fancy sushi rolls, or to impress someone with high quality food, attentive service, or upscale ambiance. But the format is entertaining, mostly functional, and can be fun for those in a playful mood.
google avatar

Chloe J.

Yelp
I've had the opportunity to visit this location twice and it's the cutest sushi bar I've ever been too. They offer a wide variety of selections and are pretty speedy with getting special requests sent to you. At the tables, they have this pretty cool plate feature which allows you to place dirty plates inside so your empty plates do not overcrowd your table. I would say the only reason I gave them 4 stars is because no alcohol is offered at the restaurant. And I personally enjoy a cocktail with sushi. However, one of the waiters did mention to me that they were trying to obtain a liquor license because the restaurant is across from a church. So I'll have to go back and visit when they obtain their liquor license. But overall the sushi is pretty good and is very reasonably priced.

Chris H.

Yelp
The food was really good and fresh I love one piece so the event they had was pretty cool. The service is very fast and the employees very nice and inviting answering all my questions. The ambiance is very calm and soft a nice place to being your family or a date.

Yelp
This was my first time at a revolving sushi restaurant and I was so amazed! It is $2.60 per plate and my friend and I ate about 12 plates. Although I can't quite remember the names of the rolls, I loved every single thing I tried! They even had cheesecake! I can't wait to be back and try more! I seriously want to try every single thing here, they look that good! The only down side here was service. Everything is pretty self-serve but they never refilled our drinks and it took a long time to get our check. Other than that this place was great!
google avatar

Thomas P.

Yelp
This sushi bar prioritizes more of the raw side of the sushi world. If you prefer cooked sushi, this place doesn't offer too big of a variety. On the other hand, I'm a big fan of their salmon dishes. The Umami Oil Salmon is great. The robot that delivers drinks seems to be inconvenient though. It takes up the entire walkway. Ordering specific sushi on the tablet is pretty convenient. Everything comes out in a timely manner. Size to price ratio is a bit eh. Overall a good sushi spot.
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
It's been a couple years since I've been here so decided to try it again tonight. Really enjoyed the whole experience in the past but tonight was ambivalent because it was not worth the expensive prices. First of all, the service was not good at all. Barely a greeting to be seated and no explanation of the concept or asking if we had been there before. This was a first for my dining companion so I had to explain everything to him. And it's not that easy to grab the plates so I feel like that needs explanation at minimum by the staff. It's was probably as clean as your average McDonald's. Which is ok but not when you charge Vic and Anthony's steakhouse prices. The sushi quality is about the same as you would get at H-E-B. I have no qualms with H-E-B sushi, but you are definitely paying for the experience. Which, ironically is less expensive to run than a traditional restaurant. The conveyor concept is a fun experience, especially nice that you don't have to wait long to eat. The robot that brings your drinks is fun too and I like that it's all pretty automated so you can order when you want and pay when you want. I'll probably come back for the experience again with someone that hasn't been there before but there are too many other really good, economical sushi options in Houston for me to be a regular here.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
My first time eating from the conveyor. I have to say I liked it much more than I expected. The nigiri was pretty good! I'll do it again sometime.

Mitchell M.

Yelp
Noah is cool, the cooks sent out the wrong dish a few times and it was kinda funny ngl, but he went back and made sure they got it right.
