How One LA Restaurateur Secured a $1.5 Million Paycheck Protection Loan | Eater LA

"An Irvine-based sushi chain initially accepted a large Paycheck Protection Program loan (reported at $6 million) but subsequently announced it would return the funds, a move intended to make aid available to smaller restaurateurs facing greater need." - Matthew Kang

Kura Sushi Returns $6 Million Federal Loan After Public Outcry | Eater LA

"The 25-location Irvine-based sushi chain, publicly traded and valued at about $87 million, decided to return a $6 million Paycheck Protection Program loan. Leadership said the funds were originally intended to keep non-furloughed staff employed and to re-hire about 35% of the workforce who had been furloughed after most dining rooms closed on March 18. The company reported roughly $24 million in cash reserves and a $20 million loan from its Japanese parent, and its CEO framed the return as a difficult but ethical choice given that better-capitalized chains were crowding out true small businesses; the company hopes the refunded money will reach independent restaurants and other less-capitalized operators." - Matthew Kang

There is a 1-2hr but ZERO wait if you book a reservation on their website, It's a revolving sushi and direct order bar. You can order any of the revolving plates directly off of the tableside tablet. Make sure to download their app to earn points on your 1st visit because I can almost guarantee you'll be back.

Google
This is the best place I’ve ever been! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and every dish we tried was bursting with flavor. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys delicious food and friendly service.

Google
would absolutely recommend for those who like sushi. i mean come on, it’s sushi on a conveyer belt and it counts your plates and you put them in a little place like wow. this is cool. lovely and quick service, our waiter made sure we were taken care of, clean bathrooms, and i also enjoyed the x amount of plates gives you a toy gimmick. did get somewhat cold in there toward the end but hey it happens

Google
Our waitress Darnie was awesome. She felt like a friend you have known forever. She was helpful, quick and very attentive. The sushi was pretty good and it was fun to just order what you wanted on the menu screen. Nice and quick if you don't have a long lunch break. Once you order it was made and delivered on the top belt, then the bottom belt had sushi that is freshly made already so you just grab what you want. Nice to see it first instead of just a menu description. Next the plates when you're done, go in a slot at the table and it adds up your cost as you go. The whole thing was fun and tasty. Thank you Darnie for the good experience. Watch out for those robot waiters they might run ya over. 😄

Kura Revolving Sushi Bar offers an outstanding dining experience with a great team and chefs who achieve perfection in every dish. It's a fantastic spot for families and kids, providing both tasty and unique experiences with each visit. The revolving sushi concept adds a fun and engaging element, making it an enjoyable outing for everyone. The quality of the sushi is exceptional, with fresh ingredients and a wide variety of options to choose from. From traditional sushi rolls to innovative creations, there's something to satisfy every palate. Additionally, their interesting drinks menu includes unique beverages like Japanese sodas, specialty teas, and sake, perfectly complementing the meal. Their delightful desserts, such as mochi ice cream and matcha-flavored treats, provide a sweet end to the dining experience. The atmosphere is lively and family-friendly, with attentive staff ensuring a pleasant visit. My family and I enjoyed the taste and experiences immensely. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy great sushi and a memorable dining adventure!

Google
A customer brought a dog into a revolving sushi restaurant, sitting on their lap and on the table. This is completely unacceptable. The plates circulate between all diners, which makes this a serious health and sanitation concern. Allowing a dog inside a restaurant is already a clear violation, but in this environment it is especially disturbing. Management should never have permitted this to happen.

Google
This is the first time I revisit this place since pandemic. Food near still taste good as before. Using computer to order food is much more convenient. There's a robot bring water to the table. I think it's cool. Servers are very nice and polite. Noticed price has gone up since my last visit, 2 years ago. But I still enjoy the food. They're more variety of dishes added to the menu. I would definitely go back again in near future.

Google
Fun novelty sushi experience! Full points for how fun the experience is, but half points on how the food tasted overall. The rice often had subpar texture. First picture shows the best plate I had, the creamy yolk and salmon was delicious. Still a fun place to eat with friends, just be prepared for pretty long waits to be seated around dinner time.

Yelp
This was an amazing experience!! I cant wait to come again! I have tried so many new sushi !

Yelp
John was amazing!!!! He gave us stellar customer service and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and appreciated! The food was amazing and the ambiance was extraordinary. Words can't describe how much we value John and his service.

Yelp
Dinner tonight was excellent. Food tasted phenomenal. Our server, Briana, was very attentive to us and getting our drinks refilled. A pleasurable atmosphere that was well lit and lively. 10/10 will return.

Yelp
Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, Convoy! It's a fun way to eat sushi! It's $3.85 to $4.45 each plate! My favorite is their Tuna bluefin Toro! Delicious!! FYI: they are always busy but it's worth the wait!

Yelp
The last time I went to Kura, was when I was in Japan, and both experiences has been kind of similar. We came in as a party of 2 on a Sunday afternoon, and put our name downs on their electronic waitlist. This place offers booth seating and bar seating, so we opted for the faster option, which as the bar. We waited about 10 minutes and were seated. Kura gives you the option to grab food from the conveyor belt, or order from the online screen. Waters needed to be ordered from the screen, and a robot brings it out to you. Sushi here is average, and each plate ranges from about $4-6. Service here was mediocre at best. All of the servers have a dead and unfriendly look on their faces. I also wished someone had told us to order from only one screen to receive one tab when sitting at the bar, because we ended up with two tabs and had to pay twice. We live nearby so we didn't have to worry about the parking situation, but the lot and structure here definitely can't accommodate all the businesses. Overall, this is a decent spot to get sushi, especially if you're craving it and you live nearby. It's a fun experience to get to wait and grab sushi from the belt, although keep in mind the belt isn't always stocked, so you'll probably have to select the items from the screen.

Yelp
Been coming here for years! Love the crab handrolls. Always get 3 of these for myself. Also love the nigiris with the yuzu drizzled on top. Sometimes there's some seasonal specials which I always try to take advantage of like sea bream or wagyu. Price is now $3.90 but still fair for the premium items. Will be continuing to return for years to come :)
google avatar

Gian S.

Yelp
Such a fun sushi spot! The sushi itself was pretty good and I loved the option to either order directly or grab plates off the revolving sushi line. It's a great way to try a variety of items and the nigiri was solid. The whole setup is super neat!
google avatar

Jaclyn S.

Yelp
Back again! Another wonderful evening at revolving sushi. Everything tasted great as usual. The servers are always friendly and helpful. The ambiance is fun. Lately, the sink on the women's bathroom is fixed and now I can wash my hands without getting drenched! Yay! I appreciate it so much! Got a snoopy keychain this time :)
google avatar

Lucy H.

Yelp
Honestly, I wanted to love this place. We will start with the pros: great concept. Love the sushi coming around on the belt so you can grab what you like. Place the plates into the little hole so that they can calculate your bill, there's a screen to older other things such as ramen which was tasty but in a smaller bowl. Good service. They kept coming to check on us. Pricing is very reasonable as well on each dish. Con: the food was not fresh. The worse thing is going to get sushi and your sushi doesn't taste fresh'! They also have meat on sushi rice but that also isn't real sushi. Long wait. Probably waited over an hour.
google avatar

Yelp
Revolving sushi is always a fun time, and this spot definitely delivered on the vibe. My girlfriend and I went shortly after opening and only had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated, which was nice. The sushi itself was decent--nothing mind-blowing or particularly unique, but still tasty enough to keep grabbing plates off the belt. You're definitely going for the experience more than the quality. That said, be warned: the plates add up fast. We ended up eating 17 plates between the two of us, and the total came out to $66. So it's not exactly the best bang for your buck, but if you're in the mood for something casual and fun, it's a solid choice. Would I go back? Sure--especially for the novelty and a light meal. Just maybe not when I'm trying to be budget-conscious.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Sigh. The novelty of all the revolving sushi is so fun but I don't think the quality is there. It is also pricey if you are coming in starving.. better to go to an actual sushi place and pay a bit more money. The sushi is kind of warm for some reason so I don't know how fresh it is. Each plate is about $5 which comes with 2-3 pieces depending on which one you grab. There's lots of rice for each roll so I suppose you can get full quickly. This lot shares parking spots with a bunch of other restaurants nearby so it can be super packed and difficult to find a spot. I highly recommend going on Yelp to get on the waitlist 20-25 mins before getting here because the wait time is pretty long. Definitely a fun place for kids to pick and choose the sushi plates and then win some toys based on how many plates you eat but not a huge fan myself unless i just want something fun. I think this place can be a bit cleaner too.. there were so many crumbs leftover on my seat, I had to wipe it myself.
google avatar

Katy V.

Yelp
Loved this place! Great vegetarian options, especially the rolls made with soy paper instead of seaweed. Super fresh and tasty! As a suggestion, I'd love to see some wine options on the men
google avatar

Jenna P.

Yelp
I LOVE the novelty of the conveyer belt sushi, my mouth waters every time the Salmon Toro comes by I am BEGGING please put the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice back on the menu, I still have dreams about her and I'm not ready to say goodbye
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
Me and my friend went yesterday for dinner. Both of us were having stomachache and diarrhea today. I think the restaurant should have a better quality control on the food.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Open late, good sushi. Fast service. It's not as good as, for example, Sapporo in Vegas which is great revolving sushi, but it's some of the best in Orange County.
google avatar

Jin H.

Yelp
Not sure about the Kura hype. I've gone a few times and the fish portions are always super small and I can tell it's not very fresh. This most recent visit I noticed that the fish wasn't even properly thawed so that was disappointing. Their udon is good and safe though, and I like the little robots that come and bring you your water.
google avatar

Julieann M.

Yelp
I took my 2 little girls here for dinner. We arrived around 30 min with a short wait. We really enjoyed our experience here. It was very easy to navigate how to order. You could choose from the revolving sushi conveyor or you could order any of the items directly from the menu and it would come out fresh, straight to you from the sushi bar. A cute robot brings your beverages to your table. It wasn't too loud. The sushi tasted great. The shrimp tempura was a little expensive for the 2 pieces. But everything else was fairly priced. I can't wait to come back

Yelp
My children have been wanting to visit a revolving sushi bar restaurant, so when we were visiting Orange County and saw that Kura Revolving Sushi Bar was nearby, we made it a point to visit. They were SO excited, and we all had a great time. First of all, you need to check in at the kiosk outside of Kura. There isn't very much space to wait inside, so the check-in kiosk is outside, and most likely, if there are other people waiting, you'll have to wait outside. We visited around 4:30 p.m., though, and it wasn't crowded at all, so we waited maybe two minutes. Once we were seated, they asked if it was our first time visiting (it was). So they explained the procedure to us. You can grab the plates off of the conveyer belt -- make sure to pinch the plate and pull straight out -- or you can order from the menu and have it delivered. We did both, but my children enjoyed just plucking dishes from the conveyer belt as they presented themselves in front of us. We got so many plates. At each table, there's a little depository for plates. You just put them into a chute and the chute whisks them away. If you deposit 15 plates, you get a prize. This probably doesn't make any sense until you do it yourself. I think my kids heard that they get a prize after 15 plates and wanted to order and eat lots of plates. Which was OK with me, actually, because my children are sometimes picky eaters, so to see them devour sushi and edamame and pickled watermelon just to get a prize made me very happy. The experience and spectacle was worth the visit. But honestly, even if I were dining by myself, the quality and variety of the sushi would have impressed me. I really enjoyed my meal. This is a great place to get sushi, and it's especially a great place to get sushi with young people, because it's fun!

Yelp
I came here on a Thursday evening with two other friends in August - we had to wait about 45 minutes to be seated, which I expected given this place's popularity. Once seated, we were promptly served the drinks we ordered and were able to easily grab and eat the available sushi. I am a big fan of salmon and eel dishes and found these to be easily obtained. Overall not the most amazing quality sushi and a bit pricy for its quality, but it gets the job done. The vibe was pretty fun with the animations that pop up with the number of plates you return, so be sure to come with other people if you can!

Maddi S.

Yelp
This revolving sushi bar is incredible. Their sushi is delicious. The staff is very friendly and kind. I will be coming back :)
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Revolving sushi is always fun but remember that you're paying for the experience. It's pretty pricey for what you get. But the food is decent. You get served drinks by a robot, which was kinda cool. I don't think we'll be back unless someone specifically wants the experience.

Darren C.

Yelp
I love Kura sushi it my favorite restraunt type shit My friend samuel really likes this restraunt, it is good salmon and the service is fast. The ambiance is very cute!
google avatar

Gail P.

Yelp
One of my favorite fast- sushi spots. When you're starving it's nice to instantly be able to grab sushi off the conveyor, as soon as you're seated. The sushi to face time is impeccable. I also like how you're able to get multiple small portions for a small price ($3.70+ per plate) and try quite a few rolls before the usual $17 per roll mark at a majority of sushi bars these days. There are other hot food options like udon, ramen, and ojyu boxes as well. I love beef udon and beef ojyu because it's tender and not overly salty. Be aware... when you're hungry with your eyes, you spend a lot, and super fast ;)
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
It's conveyor belt sushi or you can order from the digital tablet menu directly at your seat just like the Kura locations I've been to in Japan. You pay per plate. The menu leans more towards American-style sushi. But they have some really unique sushi dishes available and some limited-time items. You also get a chance for a little gachapon capsule prize every 5 plates. It's a fun experience. Unlike Japan though every plate is about the same price, so there aren't really any budget options. I feel like this impacts the experience because part of the fun is eating many different plates and eating until you are full. So, I would recommend looking through the menu first. Some items are a better value than others. Overall though everything was pretty good and tasty. Service was friendly and tables were clean. Ambiance is kind of basic and it's mostly bar-style seating.
google avatar

NN Y.

Yelp
No fresh at all... I won't go there again I don't believe so many high rates in this place. If people love their Sushi they don't know what fresh sushi is. I grew up in Japan so I know real sushi. All customers should go to the real Kura Sushi in Japan.
google avatar

Vicki C.

Yelp
Revolving belt sushi bar! You can also order from the tablet and it'll arrive on the express conveyor belt! Each table has a slot for dispensing empty plates and the tablet will keep track of how many you've ate. There is plenty of variety, but the quality is just ok. We visited for the Spy Family x Kura collaboration and they frequently have other cute themed collabs too. For every 15 plates, you get a gachapon toy as a reward!

Xixi L.

Yelp
The sushi here is always fresh and delicious. The chefs are friendly and the service is quick. Definitely one of my favorite spots in town! Highly recommend trying their specialty rolls!
google avatar

Koko L.

Yelp
Such a great and fund sushi spot! Very small but the booths are spacious and clean restaurant! The service was amazing... a lot of good options, great prices, great sushi. The Taiyaki was my favorite.. red bean filling was so good and taiyaki was crispy and warm :):)
google avatar

Yelp
The quality of the fish was very fresh and we had a great experience. The service was good as well

Bahrah Y.

Yelp
Love the plaza, filled with lots of restaurants and this restaurant is great. The aspect is really cool. You can take from the belt or order what you want on the screen and it comes right to you in your window. It's such a cool spot to come eat with a date or with a group. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Evan L.

Yelp
I came here on a Friday with a friend and I'm very impressed. The sushi tased so good and fresh . I went around 12:00 PM so the sushi was extra fresh, what I have learned is the earlier the better. The service is amazing as half of it is self service! You order from an IPad and the sushi come on an upper belt, Not in the mood to order? You can find your sushi on the belt and grab it! The ambiance is very cool in this place with robot waiters, cool little details that are just amazing. When you are all done with your sushi you put the plates in a plate slot in to be counted. I will be coming back to Kura Sushi in Irvine! I very much like this place!!!
google avatar

Vinitha V.

Yelp
Such a fun and unique experience! The sushi is really good quality and it's so nice you are able to try a bunch of different fish that is not too expensive. This location is very popular and they have all the menu items stocked on the conveyor belt. It's cool that you are able to collect points through their app and if you eat enough plates you can get a special prize.
google avatar

Johnson L.

Yelp
Did I enjoy the food? Yes. Was it very convenient and a good menu? Yes. Did I spend way too much? Yes.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an updated review. This location is always really good and the staff are wonderful. I would recommend making a reservation before coming because this place gets pretty busy.
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
Kura is a fun and unique revolving sushi spot with a cool concept. The idea of grabbing sushi off a conveyor belt and getting a gachapon for every 15 plates adds a playful element to the experience. Even though this is a revolving sushi spot, I opt to order my sushi from the machine so my sushi is fresh. However, when it comes to the sushi itself, it's definitely on the fast food side of things. My favorites were the Umami Oil Salmon and Garlic Ponzu Salmon, which were decent. But do not get the uni -- not good quality at all. The Ikura nigiri had way too little ikura. The fish-to-rice ratio was off for all the nigiris. There was way too much rice for the amount of fish, and I found myself cutting the rice in half to balance it out. At $3.75 per plate for just two pieces, it's pretty expensive for fast-casual sushi that doesn't live up to the price. If you are getting more premium pieces like the crab or toro, you'll only get 1 piece per plate. That said, the atmosphere is fun, and our server was very attentive, which helped make the experience enjoyable overall. It's a cool place to go for casual, quick sushi, but don't expect top-notch quality.
google avatar

Brooke P.

Yelp
My kids love this place! It is interactive, there are robots, you get to earn prizes, and they are very efficient. I come here often and love to bring my 7-year old boys. They like California rolls, shrimp sushi, watermelon and rice. I love crispy rice and salmon skin. It's not the best sushi but it always tastes fresh. The staff is extremely helpful and prompt with orders and requests, always with a smile.
google avatar

Bee B.

Yelp
The thing about me is that... I love sushi-- anywhere, anytime, and with anyone (lmao) I've been to Kura and it has been a positive experience for me. Usually like to go super late evening-- like close to their closing time; therefore, the wait wasn't bad at all. Cravings! What can I say? Anyway, sushi isn't bad at all. I prefer ordering a bunch of items at the same time verses grabbing from rotation items when I come in toward the end of the day. It's exciting when it rolls up to your table on the conveyer belt. Brings me great joy. Staff has always been wonderful and accommodating . They get super busy, so you have to wave them down if you need help with anything. Can't be passive here! Haha. I think after so many orders on their app, you win a prize. I can't fully remember, but something to that extent. It's a fun eating experience. Ambiance is bustling, loud and animated.
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
Easy checkout, nice environment. Love the handrolls here the most! I always get the spicy tuna and spicy salmon handrolls. They have awesome collaborations as well for their Bikkura Pon gachas

Kari L.

Yelp
Good service. Not great food. Crispy squid and tempura veggies were soft, soggy and oily. Sushi in revolving bar was already cold when we ate right at opening at 11am. Freshly ordered sushi was good and at least warm when it was supposed to be. No crispy rice even though it was listed on menu online.
google avatar

Yelp
Food. Gnarly. Service. Gnarly. Ambiance. Gnarly! Love the GANG GANG here. Make a reservation, or check in right away for walk in. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Evan C.

Yelp
Kura sushi is a place to go when you want sushi but not willing to do AYCE. You eat completely on your own pace and can decide which sushi you want to eat. Service was very low quality with them doing the bare minimum. Had to ask for our refills and straws rather than them checking up on us. Fish itself, some seem to be fresher than others. The snow crab was by far me and my moms favorite. Overall a decent experience but we loved eating to what we wanted to eat. We had 25 plates, 2 sodas, and 2 miso soups and total came out to around 120. So it isnt too cheap but it depends on your stomach!
google avatar

Mai L.

Yelp
We came in for my bday lunch...just a quick break from the shopping! Always enjoyed a quick and very good sushi!
google avatar

Fatima P.

Yelp
This place was good and for my first time trying it, I'll happily come back. I got 6 plates and 1 coke and it was $28. That's an incredible price point. If you want something more upscale, this isn't the place. It's got a fun vibe and the service was quick.

Yelp
It has been way too long since I've been to Kura. Last time I was here was over 10 years ago and I gave them a 1star . My husband picked for us to come here and I agreed with a little bit of hesitation haha given my prior experience. Well, I was proven wrong! Not sure if there's new ownership but they have updated the place and the menu and we really enjoyed our dining experience here. Since it was a revolving bar, you pretty much serve yourself since you select dishes as they float by. You pay by the plate and once you're done with each plate, you drop it into this machine at the inside end of the table that counts how many plates you've had. To place special orders that are not on the revolving bar, you type it in to the screen located at the top inside end of your table and it's delivered on the upper belt. Pretty cool experience. The sushi selection was pretty unique. I really loved and enjoyed the unagi with cream cheese on top. I think I had 4 of those. Hubs enjoyed their crunchy roll. I like the fact that each plate is covered while it goes around. You have to touch the bottom for the cover to open (video attached). They have KuraBot (robot assistants) bringing your drink orders to your table.

Yongsuk P.

Yelp
Oh my god! What those people were doing waiting in line!!! As I walked by so many times and seeing so many people lined up in front of the place, I couldn't resist to try when I saw no line. There was only tow tables available. I felt lucky. NOT. The food was horrible. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. None of sushi plates were looking good to try. I barely had enough not to feel hungry. The only saving grace was gyu dong, which was over priced, but ok. I also liked ginger. I would not come back and advice others to stay away. There are plenty of other places you can get better food for similar money.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
This place was fun to try once. Good variety yet not high quality. It's casual and great for a quick bite. Mostly self service with easy order and check out.
google avatar

Kassidy M.

Yelp
We got seated really fast and it was amazing service. The food was really good. I enjoyed everything we ate.

Yelp
Good quality sushi and orders come out very fast. Cush and Daniel were great servers.

Yelp
Today we visit Kura revolving sushi in Irvine. The International Chain first opened in. Japan in 1977. And opened its firstsore in the states 2008. There us usually a wait to get seated. Make sure to sign in at the front desk tablet. We had to wait for half an hour before we got called in. BUT! It was well worth the wait! The sushi was delicious! And Who would have thought eating at a revolving sushi would be so much fun! Plus they have a Robot delivering drinks! This is a definite must try folks! Stop by when in Irvine! We'll definitely be back!
