I make it a point to support institutions like this one, and I recommend Kurpfalz to all my friends for casual drinks or to linger for a longer date night. My partner and I been a few times (dinner, courtyard pizza events, a spontaneous glass, etc.) and have noticed a pattern from the owners. Sometimes you're greeted and made to feel welcome, other times not so much. Yesterday was my birthday and I couldn't wait to attend the tasting with Münzberg in the Kurpfalz backyard. Sharing my experience and feedback below.
The good: as always an inviting courtyard, amazing card/list, waitstaff are true professionals.
To improve: welcoming treatment for all guests, so everyone feels acknowledged, guided, and equally attended to.
Our experience:
When we arrived, the couple in front of us was greeted warmly. They paid, and were directed where to get a glass and begin. When it was our turn we were told “cash preferred” and directed to the nearest ATM, even though we’ve paid by card here before. Later we overheard other guests being allowed to pay with EC card, which was confusing. While my partner went to the ATM, I waited by the front and was barely acknowledged. After paying, we stood for a moment unsure how to begin until my partner picked up a flyer and asked where to start, at which point we were briefly pointed in the right direction.
The interaction with the wine rep felt just as uneven. While he engaged other guests about the wines, we were not included. It was disappointing as I look forward to learning as part of the experience. At one point my partner was nearly skipped while waiting for a pour until another guest pointed it out.
When my partner went inside to return our glasses and use the bathroom, the owner called after him, “Kann ich dir helfen?” which felt unnecessary and embarrassing as I heard it across the courtyard. I just want to emphasize that we had reserved and were looking forward to celebrating my birthday there. Overall, it was awkward.
I hope this feedback is taken to heart: the courtyard, these events, the main menu and the wine selection are beautiful. And the waitstaff (especially the woman in all black) are always lovely. My tip would be to extend the same level of warmth to all guests every time, even it doesn't seem like they belong. The wine world is pretentious enough.
