After my first review 8 years ago, I think it is safe to say that Kurt's deserves a reaffirmation of 5 stars. The food, and service, have consistently been more than enjoyable during that time. And let me mention again, consistent. It seems so difficult these days for restaurants to stay consistent, which is a shame- but I think Kurt's has held the test of time.
A quick fun fact- my neighbor, his first job, he worked under Kurt at the Atlanta Athletic Club over 40 years ago! So, its cool to see how Kurt has been a part of the Duluth area community for so long (as Kurt's has been around for a solid 36 plus years).
Another cool thing, is that during the pandemic, they have made a few changes. I get it, they aren't open as late as they used to (which sucks, because it limits how often I can get food there, but I get it), and Kurt hasn't been doing the table side fosters either. However, they have perfected their menu for curbside, and they even have beer and daily specials to take home! I won't lie, I have tried to take advantage of this whenever I can- I bet you didn't know that when available, they have the best fish and chips you ever did try!
When I am able to make it to dine in, I like sitting on the covered patio- it gives a more relaxed feeling, and I am usually greeted by the resident cat, Shadow. I am no fan of cats, but Shadow, shes a cute one (pro tip, if you get curbside, bring her a treat!) and I always enjoy her visit! Don't worry, she doesn't jump on the tables or anything, shes more of a "enjoys the smells of the kitchen" type. I also appreciate getting to see for the most part, the same staff- again, with the consistency.
Chef Alexander, who has been perfecting the menu for years, always makes the food enjoyable. My typical go to was the Schwabian Platter (AKA meat sweats)- the trio of meats with sauerkraut and mash, but I have been switching it up lately, I mean why not? A few things I have enjoyed has been the sausage skillet (which who ever knew mixing up kraut and onion strings would be so satisfying?), and go figure, Kurt's Favorite (beef goulash with spatzle)- which I should have known how hearty that would be.
Along with all of the favorites, you really can't go wrong. It has been a few years, but I have gotten the steaks here and they are always great as well. There is truly something for everyone here, and at every price point too. I seriously have not been disappointed with anything, except wishing that the pretzel dessert they made once was still available (that was more of a science experiment that went well!).
Anywho, I could go on and on about all the times I have had a wonderful dine in or take out experience here, but I will run out of space to type. The bottom line, this has been a family favorite for years, and this is officially my favorite restaurant in metro Atlanta- which they well deserve! Not to be missed!
