"This simple yet inviting first floor space features an open kitchen and counter dining. The cooking is Japanese but we’re not talking sushi; instead, as the name suggests, they specialise in kushiyaki: skewers of meat and vegetables, cooked over a charcoal grill. Sharing is encouraged and prices are easy on the pocket. Extend the evening with a visit to their bar, Yokocho, a few steps away in Hurts Yard." - Michelin Inspector

This is the first time we’ve been to their new place and we are pleased to say the food was still very good and the atmosphere was similar to the old venue. We had a few new dishes from the specials which were excellent. Hopefully it will now be easier to get a table as we had to book our Fri night slot about 3 months ago! Photos are from various visits

We have been going to Kushi-ya for years before they moved venues. We were always impressed with the service, food, and atmosphere of the small restaurant. Upon visiting them for the 1st time in the new venue I have to say I was deeply let down. The atmosphere and service has gone downhill even though the food has remained excellent. I observed the staff work and it all seemed rushed, unorganised and stressful. We were waiting maybe 20 minutes for someone to realise we haven't even been approached to order drinks which has never been an issue before. I really feel the service is no longer personable upon moving to the new venue, not too sure if it is due to the fact the new staff are all very young students with little experience in providing outstanding service which is to be expected from our previous Kuahi-ya experiences. We even attempted calling in to book a few months in advance for a special birthday and were told in a very unpleasant way that they probably won't accommodate it with some unreasonable and strange excuses and to email the request, which I have done and never received a response to. I feel it's definitely lost its magic unfortunately, and it's not something I wished upon this place. We will come back as the food is obviously outstanding however we would LOVE to see a focus on service and atmosphere which would be expected from a Michelin Star restaurant.

Tasty Japanese small plates in a relaxed atmosphere. Service was very quick and the staff were helpful. Personal fave dishes were the prawn toast and prawn katsu Sando ! Menu seems to update pretty frequently so check the most up to date menu on the website before you visit.

A minimalist Japanese restaurant tucked away in a hidden alleyway in Nottingham, Kushi-ya offers creative small plates and skewers. The cheesecake was exceptional - an explosion of flavours with a perfectly firm and crisp crust. However, the tuna was underwhelming, lacking flavour and suggesting that the quality of the fish may not match the premium pricing. While the overall experience was enjoyable, I agree with some reviews that suggest the restaurant is somewhat overhyped, especially considering the abundance of similar establishments offering comparable quality at more competitive prices.

Kushiya is my favourite restaurant in Nottingham! I've been to their old and new venue and the food is always amazing, the service is great and the venue has a great atmosphere. Their bar is great too with some lovely cocktails. I recommend it to anyone coming to Nottingham.

The prawn sandwich taste nice. The rice and sauce with egg is so good. The matcha cheesecake is the star of the restaurant.

Yummy food, expensive but good quality. Really nice, fast service. Love the interior design of the restaurant.

Came here last year for dinner and had a wonderful meal. The service was excellent too. Really a spot worth making the journey for.
