This is a great spot to share a meal with family, a hangout with friends, or a solo meal. I enjoy happy hour here most. The food is tasty, with good portions for the price. Sushi is tasty and fresh, the dumplings are yummy and full of flavor. The drinks are on point, the bar tender is great. The customer service is great, staff is cheerful, friendly, and helpful. The restaurant is decorated nicely with many windows for natural lighting and a nice view. I recommend visiting this spot, one of my favs in the area.

Wow what a great experience, i ordered the chicken katsu curry and it took my breath away. One of the best experiences I’ve had in a while. Servers here are some of the nicest I’ve met and I really did enjoy my time eating here overall amazing

Generous portions of fish. Very good salmon. Highly recommend the yellowtail belly nigiri. A great lunch spot!

Google
Wonderful sushi spot in Bethesda with the most amazing crew and bartender! Been here 2 times this week and will be back to more! If you are in the area, do check out this place.

Great experience! The bartender Kaylee was so knowledgeable and sweet. Food was delicious Will definitely come back

We enjoy coming here all the time. The service is good and the food is excellent. The sashimi sampler is always a hit. If you like maki, I suggest you try the cherry blossom and our favorite the spicy yellowtail. If you like sashimi don’t miss trying their chutoro sashimi. My son loves Ramen so he is into their spicy Ramen.

(Please see update below) We had high hopes after a long day of eating delicious sushi until we couldn’t eat anymore. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. When we arrived It was pretty empty so we expected fast service and that’s what we got. The food came out really fast! The plating was nice and it was clean in the area we sat in. However, the sushi was mushy and lacked any flavor. I got a volcano roll, which is fried, and it tasted like the oil it was fried in was bad or had been reused too many times. The same was also true for some spicy shrimp we ordered. I’m also used to my sushi order being plated separately than the other people at the table. This wasn’t the case. All of our orders were mixed together and with no clue what each roll looked like it made it a little difficult to be sure which one was which. Also we are still in a pandemic so we didn’t really plan to share plates. There were also random boxes taking up half the restaurant. Very subpar experience. Update 5/24/2024: since my last review this location has new management which is evident by how nice the bar is and now the side of the restaurant that was previously used as storage is now an open seating area. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. A menu was provided and I noticed an upgraded menu. Our server was attentive for the most part but it was the change in quality of food that stood out to me. I ordered an Unagi sushi bowl with a side order of dragon rolls. My friends ordered a variety of rolls and this time around we only left 2 pieces on our plates because we were SO full. The presentation was amazing and overall the experience was very pleasant. I would definitely go again. (I’ve provided updated pics )

Google
Kusshi is an absolute gem! I ordered the Just Wagyu and the Sashimi Platter, and it was hands down one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. The sushi was incredibly fresh, the Wagyu melted in my mouth, and the presentation was on point. The service was just as impressive – attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. If you’re looking for quality sushi and a top-notch dining experience, Kusshi is the place to go. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I was in the area to meet with my sushi-loving sister. We purposely selected Kusshi because we wanted to go all out and get a sushi boat. Kusshi did not disappoint. The amount of sushi on the boat was just massive and we did our best to finish it between three people, but couldn't. The service was good, parking was a bit tricky, though. Overall a pretty great place. Come hungry!

Yelp
Kusshi in downtown Bethesda offers an exceptional dining experience with fresh, expertly prepared sushi and generous portions. The chicken katsu, salmon avocado hand roll, sushi roll, dragon roll, and salmon teriyaki were all delicious, with the sushi's freshness and quality standing out. Entrée portions were generous, leaving us with leftovers for the next day, and the pricing was reasonable given the quality and size. The staff were accommodating, and the kid-friendly atmosphere made it perfect for a family outing. For dessert, the mochi was a delightful ending, with the sesame flavor being our favorite. Kusshi seamlessly combines great food, attentive service, and a welcoming ambiance, making it a place we're eager to revisit.

Yelp
I don't think I would come here for any reason tbh. I ordered the boat - I feel like that's the way you can tell how good the sushi restaurant is. If you want roll, that would be okay. I just didn't feel like sushi chef is skillful enough to serve the sashimi or nigiri. Rice for the nigiri isn't seasoned properly and I feel like they made with the tool. Rice portion of the nigiri was consistently too much. Sashimi wasn't cut properly. Boat combination wasn't including the miso soup. When I order sushi boat from other place, I remember it was always included. Interior design is quite clean and nice. But what my one star for it. It took 30 minutes to receive my order when other people was getting their food within 15 minute or so. I'm really disappointed with pretty much a lot of thing.

Fiona L.

Yelp
My fiance and I like to come here for happy hour. They have a discount on the seared salmon sushi then, and it's quite good! The salmon melts in your mouth. We've tried other dishes but the seared salmon sushi is always the standout. It's always been quite empty during happy hour so we've never had to wait.

Susie W.

Yelp
Since moving to Bethesda, I have enjoyed many nights at Kusshi. The fish is super fresh, the menu is wide, and the prices are reasonable! There's typically seats available, regardless if you make a reservation, or you can snag a seat at the bar and grab a drink while you wait. Service is hit or miss - lots of super young staff who don't pay you much attention.

Ashley T.

Yelp
This is my third time dinning at Kusshi in downtown Bethesda and have mixed feelings about my experience. The food was undeniably good. The sushi was fresh, the flavors were spot on, and the presentation was appealing. However, the service was absolutely terrible. We were immediately seated at the bar, and from what we could see, the restaurant was empty. Our first server was not a bartender but worked to get our drinks made and food order in. Despite the quick seating, the service soon took a turn for the worse. It's a shame because the food has potential, but the poor service overshadowed what could have been a pleasant dining experience. I hope Kusshi can address these issues because good food deserves equally good service.

Monique V.

Yelp
The sushi is decent, this wouldn't be my first choice but it's great for when you prefer not to spend a lot of money. The fried gyoza is my favorite on the menu.

David H.

Yelp
Came to Kusshi for Friday dinner. Packed at dinner time. Three of us ended at the sushi bar, which seemed a little odd, as no one ever joined us at the sushi bar later that evening. But we were in a hurry so it was fine. Apps ordered: grilled chicken yakitori (pretty tasty, on bed of cabbage, lots of sauce and green onion; miso soup, could have been hotter but fine; and last a large seaweed salad which was good for 3. Chef gave us three slices of flame broiled tuna on rice. Entrees were some ala carte sushi, a salmon teriyaki and a chicken teriyaki. Both used the same teriyaki sauce as yakitori which was was disappointing. Chicken even slice for yakitori. Both on bed of veg and a side of regular rice with some sesame seeds, not sushi rice. Salmon was good and plenty of veg. Lots of chicken, but again disappointed that yakitori and teriyaki had same sauce. Staff were attentive. Ordered hot tea which was good. Restaurant was good, not exceptional, have had better.

Yelp
5. Easy 5. It's just spectacular. I have to say more so this review will post but it's still a 5, five, cinco, and any other language.

Lina C.

Yelp
Going to get sushi with your girlfriends means you get to order a boat! The fish was very fresh and everything was delicious. The only problem we had was that the food took a very long time to come out. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went, but it took almost an hour to receive our food. Other than the wait, the food itself was pretty good and the restaurant was pretty clean. Their green tea was nice and strong and complemented the food. My favorite was probably the seared fatty salmon!

Sherry S.

Yelp
First time dining here since its transformation from Hannaro to Kusshi. My friend & I met here for lunch. The renovation is lovely and inviting. I really want to like this place since right around the corner from where I live & I do like Japanese cuisine. However, I had one of their udon soup bowls & was drinking water all afternoon. Hoping that giving this place a second chance will be better.

Kwame S.

Yelp
I thought my brief experience at Kusshi was pretty decent. I stopped by for a quick lunch, and everything met my expectations. In general, I thought the prices were fine relative to the area, and the service was pretty on point. My salmon bento box was very delicious, and my food came out pretty quickly. While I probably would not travel more than 30 minutes to dine here, it is a great spot to drop by if you have a sushi craving while in downtown (I think) Bethesda.

Ed G.

Yelp
Attended the soft opening and this is an interesting space. Taking over from Hanaro Sushi, the decor can use some updates. I ordered the cherry blossom Sushi dish and it was great. Not surprised as the Sushi from Kusshi places has been really good. The vegetarian ramen was first said to be vegan by one waiter then clarified that it can be made vegan. Heads up to request vegan if needed. The noodles, flavors and vegetables were all great and nothing wrong there. Looking forward to checking out the place again after the grand opening. Would be a good place for a larger gathering with the space on the other side of the restaurant.

Yeraldine Q.

Yelp
We had five dishes, but the ones that we really enjoyed were Samurai and Ovi. They were really good. The mix of flavors was amazing. Sadly the service was..."distracted"? It was odd, one person took the order, brought it and then disappeared. After a while waiting, another person came to take another order which was waiting on the counter after being ready for so long that I was about to either live or take it myself, until a third person came and brought it. So, if you are more patient than me, just come and enjoy the food.

Jann L.

Yelp
My wife and I went to Hanaro during lunch time, but it was only for takeout. There were some crumbs on the floor and some dust by the waiting area, but the store was fairly clean. The price of the sushi is reasonable and the taste and flavor of the sushi is of the highest quality. I am giving this restaurant a four-star rating because the taste of the sushi was truly exceptional and of the highest quality. Despite some minor cleanliness issues, the reasonable price and outstanding flavor make Hanaro a great choice for sushi lovers.

Yelp
I was super excited to try out this place after I heard they just finished remodeling and also heard that they did change up some items on the menu and added completely new drinks! I was pleasantly surprised as the place has undergone a stunning transformation as it looks so much brighter and bigger than before. The updated decor and design is both modern and inviting and really helps tie the whole place together. My friends and I came on a busy Friday night and the bartenders were all extremely welcoming and attentive the whole night and answered any question or concerns we had about the menu. I was really just interested in trying some of the new things they offered on the menu which was the waygu tartare and the Galbi donburi (which wasn't officially on the menu but one of the bartenders told us to try as it was his favorite). The tartare was really nicely seasoned, compared to other tartare dishes I've had in the past, and the quail yolk on top really helped tie in the whole dish in my opinion. I also really enjoyed the presentation with the tomatoes and cucumbers around the edge of the plate as they were also a nice addition to the dish. The Galbi donburi was probably my second favorite thing as the meat was really well marinated and tender, and it paired really well with the sweet sauce they used with the egg. I have never really been a big fan of donburi dishes in the past but after eating this one here and actually liking it, it really made me reconsider trying the other ones they have to offer. We would have also tried some of the new sushi rolls too but we weren't too hungry and wanted to save it to try another time which we definitely will have to another time! The drinks that we got recommended were also totally up my alley too as they were just the right amount of sweetness and didn't have a strong taste of alcohol. The hello kitty drink tasted almost like a strawberry smoothie, the chomimitini like a lychee juice and the kochi lime pie was like a key lime pie milkshakes. Highly recommend everyone to try out this place!

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance was all amazing! Leon treated us really well and checked in with us throughout our meal.

Yelp
Hanaro hits the spot, and you can get delivery. As of the date of this order, they have a deal on Uber Eats where several of their items are buy one get one free, including the Firecracker roll, which normally costs more than $15. It has a huge topping of imitation crab, spicy mayo, and tempura crunchies, and is stuffed with a slightly spicy mix of crab, tuna, and salmon. Tasty stuff if you like more complicated maki. In addition to that one, we sampled the salmon avocado, shrimp avocado, and Bethesda roll, with a side of edamame. The menu has all types of sushi, plus noodle dishes, dumplings, and lots more. Big drink menu too. You won't leave disappointed.

Annie C.

Yelp
We forgot to make a reservation, but we were still able to be seated at the bar. We ordered so much since there was a deal of 30% going on at this time. We kept ordering more because we wanted to try more and more. My friends really liked the mackerel and said it was probably the best they've ever had. Food was pretty satisfying, and we're so full. The area is pretty cute, but parking does cost money. Service was okay but a bit slow.

Rebecca H.

Yelp
I came here when they still had indoor seating. The shrimp tempura roll here was good. The takoyaki and the gyoza were ok. The lychee cosmo was a decent fruity drink. The bartender was friendly and helpful. Bethesda doesn't have any great sushi places but if I had to get sushi while in Bethesda, I would probably come here. Overall I had a good experience.

Annie L.

Yelp
I have been to the Kusshi Sushi up at Pike and Rose and the one in Downtown Silver Spring and loved my experience at both locations. This one in Downtown Bethesda, however, did not quite measure up to the other two locations. We orders Salmon Nigiri, spicy salmon rolls, and an udon noodle soup. The salmon pieces were small, the spicy salmon roll was kind of soggy. The udon noodle soup tasted like someone just threw teriyaki chicken stirfry with udon and water (yuck). The service was slow too despite very few customers in the restaurant on a Tuesday night.

Camille R.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming to Kusshi whenever I'm craving sushi! The ambiance made me feel very welcome and cozy, considering the freezing cold weather. The servers were very attentive and made sure that my time there was enjoyable. My personal fave is their lava roll but they also have many amazing entrees if you're not the biggest fan of sushi!

C C.

Yelp
I came in at 6:40 pm and received my food by 6:45. Service was quick and employees had great energy. Also i took a peek at the happy hour and they have pretty good deals.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
This place has the best sushi in town. I travel all the way from Northeast DC to come here. Really grateful for them!

Monsieur L.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Food is solid good. Would return. 5 stars for professional efforts, cleanliness and good food. @Wesley: Service is friendly, but they need to work on listening and getting orders right. With a menu that has variations of same main ingredients, it's important to be precise before submitting the orders to kitchen. We ordered two chicken katsu curries. We got 2 chicken katsus, sans curry. It was immediately corrected, with no issues. Table next to us seemed to have ordered salmon nigiri and got salmon roll. This was also immediately corrected. Our food was great, and we even got some mochi from the management as a token for the "inconvenience", and we hadn't even complained. I like that management responds to online feedback. Some team meetings between front and back of house will probably result in better communication, and less food comp.

David L.

Yelp
Absolutely AMAZING Service, Food, AND Drinks! If you love sushi and/or have a good time with friends and family. This place is one of the best place to go to. It's not noisy nor is it super busy. The staff are SUPER friendly and hilarious. There's outdoor seatings too when summer time hits. Making reservations is not hard and can be done on same day.

Samantha M.

Yelp
Food and service were great! Leon was very attentive and welcoming. Will definitely be back

Drew T.

Yelp
I wouldn't recommend coming here for lunch unless you have 2+ hours to spare. The wait to receive our food was the longest I've ever experienced in sushi restaurant. We dined in for lunch on a weekday, and the restaurant didn't seem busy. But our food--which was only two entrees and nothing else--took over an hour to arrive. Staff never checked in on us, and we had to flag them down about our order. The food was fine, but I wouldn't dine in again. Hate to leave a negative review, but want to warn others who may not have the time to wait it out.

Kiki C.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I definitely recommend the spicy tempura udon my favorite thing off the menu !!! We will definitely be back !!

Gilbert J.

Yelp
The food was fresh and good particularly bento box Recommend offering bento box ar night

Ava V.

Yelp
The food was delicious! We enjoyed sharing the appetizers, I recommend the Takoyaki (octopus balls) as an appetizer! The food was very fresh and flavorful! I would definitely come back here again!

Lisa O.

Yelp
Highest quality sushi, generous portions. Friendly, fast service. The teriyaki chicken was easily two servings.

Julian B.

Yelp
Excellent sushi and service. Always fresh and interesting special rolls. Great fried chicken curry as well. Went on a busy day and order was delayed but manager, Jordan, apologized and I could see how hard he was working. Highly recommended and great atmosphere.

R R.

Yelp
So excited to finally find a good, decently priced sushi restaurant in the DMV area! And they offer brown rice sushi which was some of the best I've had anywhere (I got the dragon roll and it was awesome!). The seared salmon belly and steamed shrimp dumplings on the happy hour menu (until 6:30 on Monday, when I went) were delicious, and the shrimp katsu curry (I also got it with brown rice) was SO GOOD. It came with about 6 fried shrimp and a good amount of rice/sauce, and delicious Japanese pickles. The HH spicy tuna role was the only item I wouldn't order again, just because there were so many great options. The staff was super nice and friendly too, and the atmosphere was cute!

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Great sushi train. They have amazing food, service and a few cool things when you order. We had a great dinner

Xin W.

Yelp
I ordered the Bethesda roll and 15 piece nigiri assortment on Grubhub. I thought that the quality was pretty good and the serving size was pretty big. The different raw pieces did not have any fishy smell. The color of the raw fish was also very vibrant. I was very surprised by the cooked nigiri such as the eel, shrimp, and octopus. The meat was very tender and not rubbery at all. Overall, I think this was a good meal.

Leidy C.

Yelp
Ethan his service was amazing!! Thank you your service!! Definitely coming back!

Mark C.

Yelp
I was excited about Kusshi coming to Bethesda, we like their one in Pike and Rose and in Tysons. We just had sushi, it was very good. Server was a pretty new, but did ok job, think they are still getting kinks worked out. Only suggestion, they have no non-alcoholic beer, almost all restaurants now have at least one. I'd suggest Heineken 0.0 - it is delicious and I think would pair nicely with sushi. Not sure if there are Japanese N.A. beers? We will go back for sure.

Tommy O.

Yelp
Miso seabass and seared fatty salmon. That's all I have to say. Also two great options if you can't do "raw" food

Kate C.

Yelp
I'm so glad the sit down part reopened! The food and service is great, maybe a little high for the quality. Still plan to return often.

Frances L.

Yelp
Delicious food! The service was amazing and the taste of the dumplings is my favorite thing in the world!

Thomas L.

Yelp
Newly renovated and gorgeous. I've been coming to the place for years when Bethesda was still the go to spot to go out for night life without having to go all the way to DC. However, since I'm older and "wiser" I don't go out to get shwasted anymore. But Hanaro aka Kusshi Bethesda, is still a nice sushi spot to chill and have a drink. The sushi is still as good as it has always been and since it's now part of the Kusshi brand, the quality of fish that you come to expect is definitely present here even if everything around this area is starting to die off. I've always sat at the bar to have a drink and food so the bartenders are always so nice and talk to you if you want or leave you alone if you don't. So service is great!

Nick N.

Yelp
Great service and food! Food arrived quickly and has been consistent across visits. The staff has always been friendly and attentive! Very family friendly, Definitely recommend!

Dinh N.

Yelp
Decent sushi for average price for the area. We got the cucumber, avocado, and cream cheese maki and the cherry blossom roll. The cherry blossom roll was good and I would get it again.

Eric B.

Yelp
Delicious, big portions of fresh sushi and sushi. They restaurant is closed for indoor seating but orders can be placed for pick up

Hope L.

Yelp
Wow! The renovation made this place brighter and livelier! Overall, fun vibes and clean. Such a great spot for good eats and drinks. We tried their new cocktails which were so unique and yummy. The service was quick and super friendly!

Krishna P.

Yelp
Got sushi delivered via Uber eats. 1 order of Bethesda roll and 1 order of Dragon roll. Both were good. Delivery was prompt. Presented well. Liked the dark sauce that was put on the dragon roll. Have to go try more things in the restaurant sometime.

Lydia C.

Yelp
The food itself is quite good and about the same high-quality as their sister restaurant, Kusshi, in Pike & Rose. We ordered the sashimi sampler, the chirashi, beef asian curry, a dragon roll, and a salmon avocado roll. The fish in our sashimi sampler and chirashi were fresh and offered a nice variety, and in my sashimi sampler there was a nice fatty tuna that was super delicious. However, the service and ambiance was a bit questionable. The restaurant was dark and super cold, we never took our winter jackets off the entire time and it was ironically warmer outside. While our server was kind, she made several mistakes such as forgetting the miso soups that came with our sushi entrees and entirely forgetting my mom's beef asian curry until it arrived cold. I also ordered a hot green tea that came out lukewarm at best, and then when I asked for a hot version of the tea she changed it to a black tea instead of green tea, which I guess was fine.. Overall, the food is delicious and prices reasonable, and the parking is convenient on weekends as the Woodmont parking garage is free and about a ~5 minute walk away. Hanaro also occasionally offer groupon deals which is nice. However, they could work on improving the consistency of the service and the decor/ambiance.

Carlos P.

Yelp
The food was so good, so many things to choose from and the service is amazing, definitely recommend the Chicken Teriyaki!
