Homely Restaurants

"On the remote west coast of Scotland, this rather special hotel and restaurant occupies a 17th century coaching inn with welcoming bedrooms and breathtaking views over Loch Glendhu and the surrounding mountains. Wrap yourself up and go for a hike, then kick back in the warm, laid-back Kylesku restaurant, where all the produce is local and the fresh seafood is a choice, with sweet langoustines and rope-grown mussels landed just 200 yards away." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

I rarely write reviews but I felt that the google rating is unfair for the experience I received. It’s true that the restaurant averages £10 - £20 for Starters, £20 - £30 for Mains (extra for the Shellfish Specials and Market Fish etc) and mainly £10 for Desserts. That said, for my lunch with my dad the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the Catch of the Day Salmon I had for my main was some of the best food I had during the trip. I personally would recommend for a treat, or special occasion if you’re in the area

We had a wonderful evening at this restaurant the other night. We parked on the other side of the bridge and decided to walk there and ended up running into three deer who were just chilling in the middle of the the the tiny road leading to the restaurant, which added a magical quality to the experience (I’ve never been that close to deer before, they weren’t scared at all!). The restaurant itself was very cosy inside while still being pretty modern. We were lucky enough to get a table for two looking out on the loch and the beautiful mountains. We ordered shrimp and oysters for the appetizer (delicious!!) and for the main we had trout on a bed of beans and crispy kale, also fantastic (their daily special)! Our waiter was also super friendly and didn’t mind answering all the questions we had, he made us feel very welcome. All in all we had a great experience and would recommend to anyone looking for tasty seafood at a location that is quirky and authentic. Side note: yes, the food is on the pricier side but I do feel like it was still normal for fresh seafood and it was definitely worth it. You can tell that the chef put a lot of thought into the dishes and everything was high quality, even the dessert we had (sticky toffee pudding) was made with fresh dates and was so moist and delicious.

Had lunch at the restaurant today, booked ahead just to be sure (always a good idea, even in the off season!). Service was excellent, there when you needed them but not hovering. Food was absolutely phenomenal. Thai curry mussels and butter poached halibut, would recommend either. Almost missed out on this gem due to a full schedule, so glad we made room for it!

Stopped in for lunch during a road trip. Found staff to be very blunt and unfriendly. The menu was not explained. A larger group came in after us who were treated completely differently by staff, who couldn’t do enough for these customers. Meanwhile a couple sitting behind us had to go get their own menus and eventually left without ordering due to no attention from the staff. Food prices were high, which we were fine with, but surprised there was a service charge for service that was so poor. The restaurant was not busy at the time of the visit.

Great food, fish and scallops super fresh. Only downside it that it’s very pricey for what you get. Dessert was delicious

Stopped here for some lunch, sat outside on the terrace with the dogs which was lovely views. Was looking forward to some food. Saw the very small barcode in the corner and tried to order but no phone signal, so hubby had to go inside to get the WiFi password and a copy of the menu. There was one vegetarian option a veg curry which sounded nice until I saw the price £22!! So I was going to order a couple of starters but they weren't coming up on the menu online, hubby didn't see anything he wanted so we ended up leaving. Glad we did now as seen the other comments about service charge being added. We've stopped at other places on the NC500 that haven't been this expensive or poor choice. Shame because it's a great location and has a lot of potential.

We had lunch at the Inn yesterday. It has been several years since our previous visits all of which were very enjoyable all round. This time not so much. Main difference was the high prices. The food was OK but underwhelming relative to price. The soup of the day (broccoli) was just warm and oddly of non-specific taste. The stand out high price was £55 for a bottle of Louis Latour Macon Lugny. The mark-up must be between 3-4X. And £4 for 2/3 of a glass of ginger beer was ridiculous. The service was good and friendly. Overall an underwhelming and over-priced experience. Not in any rush to re-visit.

Awesome location. Great food, but the price reflects the absence of any competition. We had just swum in the loch, and arrived in high spirits for a quick drink on the terrace. I sat alone on a bar stool patiently while the staff made drinks, as they studiously avoided eye contact. After 5 minutes I interrupted the silence and asked if I was doing the right thing by waiting to order from the bar, only to be told - as if I should know - that I should order by scanning the tiny QR code on the corner of our table on the terrace. It took ten minutes to order and pay, which required an enquiry about how to order a drink (eg shandy) that was not on the menu, resolved by a text note to request lime in addition to soda, and a lager shandy, as well as a half of Best. Unfortunately, a half of lager and a Best shandy arrived. This de-humanised system made it feel like a McDonalds, detracted from the atmosphere, added delay, wasted drinks, and made it unlikely I’d return for another drink unless I was desperate. We recovered and had a lovely time and the staff were friendly after the drinks arrived. However, the staff aren’t the problem, it’s the QR code system that ruins an otherwise perfect setting for a relaxed drink.
