It was a busy day and folks were looking for a mid-day respite from the grind. Searching for restaurants in the area, balanced against the tastes of the assembled group, and we settled on Kyoto Ramen. It was relatively close on California St just off 16th street toward 17th. Upon arrival, we mound a quick serve Ramen joint with a pretty good menu.
I settled on the Shoyu Ramen (American level of hot spice) and a side of Gyoza, placed my order, and sat down w/ a glass of water. The atmosphere was pleasant with a diverse eclectic clientele.
Service was really quick. The Ramen came first and the Gyoza a bit later. It was visually appealing with good balance of spice, mushrooms, roast pork, green onions, sprouts, fishcake,... All the usual accoutrements. The egg was not split in half, which seemed a bit odd, but ok. It was a little awkward to eat with chop sticks. It was manageable though. It was a bit bland until I really got down into the bowl. More medium than hot, but well balanced and seasoned. The roast pork was really good. Broth very good. Noodles? A little al dente for my taste, but passable.
The gyoza were ok. A little tough, but the filling was really good.
Kyoto Ramen was a good spot for lunch and definitely worth a try.
