16 Restaurants Worth a Drive Out of New Orleans

"If you’ve never explored the sweet old town section of Slidell, it’s a real throwback, with locally owned shops and friendly eateries like KY’s Bicycle Shop. Originally a millinery store in the early 1900s, the historic building had a run as a family-owned grocery, then took off as a bike and lawnmower shop in the late 1960s. The welcoming bar and restaurant, with its ceiling scape of two-wheeled transportation, serves a freewheeling American comfort menu of breakfast, fried seafood, burgers, and plate specials." - Beth D'Addono

This place is in a cool spot and it looks like a great little restaurant. Unfortunately the looks don’t translate to the food or the service. We got three poboys. Two roast beef and one shrimp. The shrimp tasted ok but was light on the shrimp compared to most places in town. The roast beef was tough and the gravy tasted like it was from a can. Incredibly disappointing considering the cool cafe vibe and the high prices. For $17 roast beef poboy I would expect it to rival some of the best in town. It was actually one of the worst that I’ve had. So the restaurant responded quickly. Good by them although all they did was defend their poor performance. Yes they gave us extra napkins that we didn’t request but that doesn’t change the 35 minutes that it took to serve three poboys nor does it make up for the high prices for sub par poboys. Do yourself a favor and check out La Pines Cafe. Way better and the prices are incredibly reasonable.

Google
Wonderful restaurant/bar in the quaint town of Slidell, LA where you can get delicious food and adult beverages, if you wish. Limited hours but great for families also. The atmosphere is unique with hanging bicycles (true to it's name). The owners are very pleasant and don't mind sharing the history of the bar, confessional and other unique characteristics of the restaurant and bar. You won't be disappointed with the food and service and of course, the prices are reasonable.

Google
We love this place! The food is great and the service is always so welcoming. I got the catfish and shrimp platter tonight. Cooked perfectly and not over breaded. If I had two extra hands I’d give this place four thumbs up! 11/10!

Google
What a fabulous experience! Visited here on Christmas Eve and truly felt like we walked in as strangers and left as family. The bicycle decor and history of the building drew us in but the food and service made this meal exceptional. We were visiting Slidell on our way to a swamp tour but already looking for a reason to go back.

Google
My husband and I were driving threw Slidell and both hungry craving a good burger. I scrolled threw lots of restaurants reviews an photos before I made my final choice at Ky's. So happy I did! The location is old town and is so charming. The establishment itself felt like somewhere my grandpa used to take me as a kid.. the waitresses were very friendly and aimed to please. The food was out in a timely Manor& the Burger and Fries was so so good! They have a good selection on the menu and prices& portions are great! Will definitely be back when we are in town or passing through. Loved the esthetic with the bikes, colorful tile floor and wood ceilings and beautiful wooden bar setup and all the plants as well! Go see for yourself! You won't be disappointed. P.S. Do yourself a favor and Order the Bread Pudding and Whiskey Sauce for Desert 💞🥰🙌🤯😋 So Amazing!

Google
Like most places in the area, this restaurant delivered gourmet food and a delightful atmosphere. The sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had. Oh! And the bread pudding was divine.

This place has a small bar that’s fairly well stocked. But no bartender. Wouldn’t wait on us until everyone in restaurant was taken care of. May be great seafood. We don’t know. Left after 8 -10 min of being ignored.

Yelp
The best steak I have eaten in many, many years. Grilled perfectly on a seasoned grill. Absolutely delicious. Excellent service. Wonderful owners!!! Lynn and Mark Richard.

Yelp
Tried this looking for a new place. Unique dishes, everything was perfect. Place was decorated with tons of old bikes and mechanical pieces. Service was fast and good. Loved it!

Yelp
Perfectly fried shrimp every time. Love the house dressing. Attentive service. The poboys are loaded and the bread is soft but crackly.

Yelp
I remember coming here as a kid and thirty years later it still has that same feeling when you walk in. The smell of yummy goodness. The smiling faces behind the counter greet you and are ready to whip up a tasty treat for you.

Yelp
Love the setting and location. They made it very cute and was excited to try it out. As soon as I hit the door me and my wife were hit in the face with super strong cleaning products! Almost left because it was so strong and really needs to be changed to low odor or something better. I got the chicken Alfredo and was not very good, had to season with bunch of salt and chicken was really good but the pasta was way way over cooked and sauce broke and was gloopy. I give that 2 stars, and could use some help. My wife got the grilled chicken Caesar salad. Need to cut the amount of dressing in half. Chicken was good though, loved how it is actually grilled. Service was fast and nice, had no complaints on that side.. just wish there was more to choose from on the menu, seems like basic same old stuff everyone has. Love to see something spectacular

Yelp
The cutest little eatery! The decor and the bikes hanging from the ceiling were fun to look at. The service was good. Our waitress was really nice. There was another woman I believe mixing the drinks was lacking personality but other than that we had a good experience. I got the steak special with the salad and baked potato. I have heard great things about the steak but I personally wasn't impressed. It was huge and thick but lacked taste. And chewy. I don't know that is just my opinion. My husband ordered the fish which he said was good. I do have to rave about the bread pudding they serve. It was delicious! Probably one of the best I've had. I will definitely go back and try something else from the menu.

Yelp
Excellent service and great food. We wanted something besides the normal run of the mill places. This was perfect. This place has character. Old style with antique bicycles hanging from the ceiling. Antique bar looks wonderful. Friendly staff. Excellent food. We ate the Hamburger Steak and gravy fries. Delicious. The bread pudding after wonderful. It's a big piece so bring your appetite. When the owner heard it was our first time in he walked from the back and personally introduced himself. Not many places with that old small town feel anymore. We will be back.

Yelp
Love this little gem!! Always delicious. Great owners!! Love the nachos and hamburgers!!!

Yelp
The food is great. The people are wonderful. And, the history is living on. If you haven't eaten here lately you really should. It's fresh, delicious and ready quick

Yelp
Now let me tell you what, if you get to Slidell Louisiana you have to go out of your way to eat at KY's Bicycle Shop. The place is wonderful. The staff tonight was glad to see us and we got there 15 minuets before closing. The owners seem to be there always and are a fun couple to talk with. It's a clean restaurant with a full bar, it's salvaged from an old steamer, cool bikes hanging from the ceiling and a tile floor made of small hexagons. It's funky! What brings us back every time we get to Slidell is the food. I had the special, Italian sausage over pasta with sautéed onions and bell peppers and garlic covered in olive oil. Julie had spaghetti and meatballs, we both loved it. They have poboys and plates and sea food. Their burgers are big and tasty!! Don't wait! Fly here and grub up!!

Aubrey W.

Yelp
Took the family out the other night for Steak Night. 14 oz Rib eye. with trimmings. Service was outstanding. As for food well, Salad dressing home made Blue Cheese was water and a little sour. Now for the steak, zero flavour. When I ask for A-1 there is a problem. Also the biggest piece of leather I have had in a long time. Temp was good but needed a chain saw and had to add something to get any kind of taste. Now for Bread Pudding. 5 stars. That was the best part of dinner. Please season the meat. At $35.00 a steak lest put a little marinade or something. I can not recommend the steak as it was very disappointing. But the greatest service you just don't know which one is your waitress as everyone serves you.

Inquisitor M.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite eateries in Old Slidell. The food is wonderful, and the price commensurate with the quality. The wait staff is really great, too. My favorite meals are the roast beef po-boy and the grilled chicken sandwich.
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
This spot is the place to be!!! The staff is comforting, and the atmosphere is comforting. I had the steak dinner tonight and it was AMAZING!!! I got it medium rare, although it came medium. I wish it had been redder, so that's why I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5. Although, it wasn't cooked to my liking.. I'll definitely be back soon :))

Bert B.

Yelp
Good food fairish service, honestly. Hours are short, knowing never to call before 45 minutes before they close and do a to go order. Ever again..we go there to eat lunch when on the go in town mama loves enjoys it there. Now she won't go..that's her I I'm here driver dang it. Food was not hot greasy fries I dont eat em anywho, but bread was hard, cold meat etc threw it and mom ate hers I felt bad..
google avatar

Yelp
Yet another staple of our little country town. Ky's Burgers are big and juicy and made to order. Pretty high priced if you ask me. It's just a burger, but hey, they do it right! Excellent location, quaint spot
google avatar

Vilma S.

Yelp
This is a great place for lunch when on a road trip! Quaint, cozy, local restaurant. Walk in and find a place to sit. You order at the counter and they bring out your food. We ordered the whole fried shrimp po'boy and the fried oyster po'boy (both came with fries) and Abita beer. Lots of shrimp and oysters and they were freakingly delicious!! Great atmosphere, great food, great drinks and we left happy and full!
google avatar

Win G.

Yelp
Great downtown poboy shop. Enjoyed a shrimp poboy and sweet potato fries. Downtown shop in quant section of old Slidell.

Yelp
My second time going was on their 25th anniversary today! The first time I went was my first time trying a Poboy and what I had last time was the fried oyster Poboy, honestly it wasn't that favorable to me but this time I got the fried catfish Poboy and it was delicious fresh out of the fryer! For the appetizer we got the small nachos and it was very good, we scarfed it down lol. Their Gumbo soup was favorable too I will definitely want that again! Their French fries seem to always be fresh and good too! I can say that I will become a regular here. The servers are attentive too, no complaints about them both visits.

Barbara C.

Yelp
When we travel we always make an effort to support local restaurants. This was a Wonderful quant restaurant. They had a very Diverse menu, great tasting food and friendly staff.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Had a late night, last minute dinner here and enjoyed a good cup of Gumbo - made right - the roux was perfect and that is the most important part. The KY Burger was solid and HUGE. Nobody's going home hungry after that! Good Nostalgia score for locals who can remember Neuhausers and the Schwinn vibe is another memory maker. Thanks for keeping the memories alive and topping it off wth some good food!
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
If you are in the area and looking for a local honey hole, this is the place to go! As you walk in and see the ole fashion bar along with the antique bikes hanging from the ceiling, you already begin to enjoy the atmosphere. The fried shrimp poboy along with the catfish poboy were both loaded like a good poboy should be made. The seafood was seasoned and battered to perfection, I wouldn't change a thing about it if I could. The fries that come with any of the burgers or Poboys are crunchy and delicious as well. And if you are going with a group, give the nacho appetizer a try, it is huge and they load it with all the listed ingredients!
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Been coming here for awhile and I tend to always get the specials because they're GREAT. One day I'm told that I have to try the burger. So on my next visit I try the burger somewhat skeptically, and not was I wrong this place has a fantastic burger!! I don't think they are capable ie of cooking anything bad. Super location, cool story, and great food!!

Yelp
This is not a bicycle shop! The first time I tried going to KY's the name threw me off. I was pretty sure I had heard about it on the radio, but when I saw the name and building, I assumed it was an actual bike shop. While it does appear to have once been a bike shop, it is actually a pretty good place for sandwiches in the Old Towne area of Slidell. Once I finally realized that this place was indeed a restaurant, I knew I had to give it a try. I went during peak lunch time and there was a pretty substantial line. Despite being busy the line moved fast and the cashiers were very friendly. The restaurant is one large open room with tables in the middle and a long bench with tables along the wall. Normally restaurants that have a long bench like they did sacrifice privacy for seating. That was not the case here as the tables were spaced far enough apart that private conversations could be held. I always judge sandwich joints by their roast beef poor boy. KY's version was good to very good with homemade beef with a slight garlicky taste. The only other sandwich I have to compare it to in Slidell is Bear's and I think Ky's was better. If you are in the Old Towne area and want a good sandwich, I encourage you to check out KY's.

Yelp
My wife and I were driving back to Atlanta from a short trip to New Orleans and we needed to have a poboy before leaving the state. We had gone to Parran's and were disappointed, so we knew we had to get something out of the big city. Since we were going east on I-10, Slidell eateries came up in our search. Our first spot we chose was closed, so when I saw Ky's Bicycle Shop, I knew we had found our spot. The place was packed when we arrived, so we considered going elsewhere, but things seemed to be flowing pretty well. We also noticed that the staff somehow kept the confusion down in their hybrid order system masterfully. They even had a good grasp of how seat savers can affect the flow of their restaurant. The wait wasn't bad either, so they know how to keep things moving even when they have a full house. We ordered the roast beef poboys and they didn't disappoint in the slightest. They were quite messy and had loads of beefy flavor. We also had hush puppies and french fries with our sandwiches and both were tasty. Disclaimer: My review was colored by the fact that while I was eating here, I realized that I had bought a Ross bicycle here when this location was a bicycle shop in the summer if 1984.
google avatar

Zoe D.

Yelp
Oh my stars!!!!! This is a hidden jewel in old Slidell. The waitress says they have been here since 1992. Everything was freshly made and the cream of artichoke salad dressing is to die for. I ordered the hamburger steak and it tasted so fresh. The vegetables that came with it had a touch of butter and garlic and it melted in my mouth. Now, I just have to bring the family in for a bite!

Duggan O.

Yelp
Old school feel, cool bicycles all over the ceiling. Owners are friendly and always come out when they have time to check and make sure everything this is good with your order. Burgers are crazy good, roast beef is best in town, and don't even get me started on the seafood! Everything is prepared with care and attention. You can not go wrong here! Do yourself a favor and go eat at KY's!
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
While visiting my mother for 6 days, I requested 2 trips to Kys, where I wolfed down their fried seafood platters. I was hoping to quelch my seafood craving, but instead, now that I'm back in CA, I am craving good southern-fried Louisiana seafood more than ever! The staff is friendly & efficient; and the food is so, so, so delicious. Prices are very reasonable (my mom and I share a platter which comes with choice of two sides). Atmosphere is very casual and laid back. And I should note that both times we visited, the owner walked over and spoke to us. Southern hospitality lives.

Yelp
Great food served at KY's! Customer service that truly treats you like part of the family. The roast beef po-boy is simply mouth-watering! They use round roast and it is cooked perfectly!! The beef has the texture of a filet. It is lathered in gravy over here. Don't expect to stay clean or look proper eating this bad boy. The bread is slightly toasted too. The white beans and sausage is delish too! They also serve burgers, sandwiches, seafood plates, and other po-boys. Charming, casual place in Slidell. Much love.
google avatar

Brian O.

Yelp
Fun casual place with great staff. Serve eggs all day too.

Yelp
Ky's Olde Towne Bicycle Shop used to actually be a bicycle shop years ago. Now it's one of Slidell's better restaurants. They still have bicycles hanging from the ceiling here. It sort of feels like you've stepped back in time when you walk in. The food is very good in this casual and charming place. The burger is great and I like their onion rings, too. The last time I visited I had the grilled shrimp poboy and fries. That was very good, too. I honestly have liked everything I've tried here. Walk in, walk straight up to the counter, seat yourself and they'll bring your order out to you when it's ready. If you're ever in lovely Olde Towne Slidell you really should stop in and see the nice folks here and try their great food.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped by for lunch today and are so pleased that we tried this local spot. Found them on Yelp! I got half a dozen fried shrimp off of their appetizer menu, a half order of fries, and an order of the hushpuppies to share with my husband. My husband got a fries oyster po boy with fries. My shrimp and fries were very good! The shrimp tasted fresh, and the fries were freshly cooked. Nice and crisp. The hushpuppies were very good. They had a bite to them, but they weren't too spicy hot. My husband said that his pi boy was the best food he's had since we've been gone from home. That's two weeks of eating all over this area, NOLA, Alabama and Florida. The restaurant itself is pretty neat. They have bicycles hanging from the ceiling and what looks to be original tiling on the floor. It's definitely not your typical chain restaurant. All together we paid $27 before tip. A little much for lunch, but worth it because of the quality, unique setting, and the fact that they are a local restaurant. Definitely recommend them!
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
This place has character. Not fancy decor, but that's what I like about it. And the food ain't half bad either. I ordered the shrinp po-boy. I don't know how they do it, but the shrimp were piping hot up until the last bite. The fries were awesome as well. The wife ordered some shrimp and mushrooom fettucini dish and she really enjoyed it. the kid got the catfish plate. It was a decent portion for being a kids' plate. Staff was very nice and attentive. can't wait to get back there.
google avatar

Jason J.

Yelp
This is the best restaurant in olde towne ever! I have not been disappointed in anything they have made, always consistent with portions and even if they're packed in the dining room, you still receive your order in a timely manner and the quality is still top notch. I highly recommend them.

Patrick M.

Yelp
I just moved to Slidell and was told how great this restaurant is . The food is ok but they didn't get my order right and it really wasn't great food because of that . So if you order from there verify that the order is correct .
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Stopped by on our way through town. We were pleasantly surprised. The building is neat with all the bikes, the service was very friendly, but most of all the food was great. I had the catfish and shrimp which tasted very fresh and my wife has a shrimp poboy which she is still talking about. Not only was the shrimp on the poboy good but the bread was delicious and very fresh. We would highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Kitchen is slow at lunch. 40 minutes after order still do not have a Special. Good is good but Kitchen could use some efficiency.

Bobby B.

Yelp
My wife and I really like Ky's. It has become our go to restaurant when family visits. I enjoy the atmosphere, friendly staff, and great food. Our favorite things to order are the nachos and burgers.

Yelp
For more than two decades KY's is the lunch place to be. Great daily specials filled with local charm and a wonderful staff.

Yelp
Best roast beef po boy in slidell! Can't say much about the service because i picked it up to go, but the roast beef po boy and gumbo were delicious! Will be back for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
First time to Slidell and KY's did not disappoint. The fried oysters and shrimp were great paired with the cocktail sauce. Come hungry because it's plenty of food! Spoke with the owners for a few minutes. Very pleasant! Will come back!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I have visited KY's on multiple occasions and have never been disappointed. My favorites are the roast beef po boy and the nachos. I also tend to crave the meatloaf special. The staff is courteous, helpful and cordial, the prices are exceptionally reasonable and the food is outstanding.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food for the price. We had a Caesar salad with chicken and an oyster Poboy. The Poboy was loaded with oysters and the salad was delicious. We also had sweet potato fries that were very good. Definitely a place we will visit again

Tahraun S.

Yelp
Great place. Food was made extremely fast & it is the perfect location for you to sit outside & enjoy the breeze & scarf down a some seafood. The owner, Mr. Kevin Young came outside to chat with us which was a first at any place I've been. Very personable friendly. Will be back for more.

Yelp
I just moved to the area and walked over to try it out , I'm glad I did ! Cool place and good food .
