Best Restaurants in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"There is no website or social media presence. It’s only open until 2 p.m. on Monday through Friday and closed on weekends. It’s cash only and certainly no frills, but L&D is an institution in East Durham and a beloved tradition for many long-time Durham residents. Classic Carolina-style hot dogs, affordable burgers, and fried chicken that’s so popular it’s usually gone before noon. The grocery part of the business is almost nonexistent at this point, but that’s not why people show up. Lunch at L&D is about as affordable — and old school — as you can get in Durham these days." - Matt Lardie

You want a hot dog or a corn dog? Well this isn't the hot dog on a stick, but the place where you're granny went. Hole in the wall to take the hunger away

Had only been to the establishment twice before now but my wife picked up my order since I was sick.. Today I came and order outside the box I had the Chuckwagon Sandwich and it was amazing. With a Side of Fries and the Buttermilk Pie. 10 stars would be given if possible. The staff was friendly and patient for I was indecisive about the amazing menu. Only problem Closed on Weekends

I eat here often. Love their food all the time. Great hot dogs. Breakfast sandwiches are a bonus. Love the bologna and egg on toast. Wayne and Steve are super nice and always friendly.

Apparently, this used to be a gas station, owned by C.P. Ellis, Exalted Cyclops of the Durham Ku Klux Klan. Make sure you enjoy those hot dogs.

This place is the true definition of a good ole southern hotdog. All the food is amazing. Hard to find places like this to eat anymore.

Yelp
Talk about your hole in the wall. This place has not changed in YEARS! Those guys can fry a chicken! If you want to be waited on hand and foot, go somewhere else.. If you want an amazing home made fried chicken then come before 11:45 because they go fast. If you ask for a Fried chicken sandwich they will give you some fried chicken, between 2 buns... you get to pull the meat off (and it taste alot better that way) If you miss the fried chicken I recommend the steak sandwich with gravy, and add some must and onions... Wow those things are like nothing you ever tasted. I am a fan of this hole in the wall, the location is out of my way, but worth going that far. My only downfall is they never have enough of the big ticket items.

Yelp
Indeed. This place looks abandoned. Especially if you go after 2pm... or on a holiday. Weekdays, 7-2, though, it can still look closed, but like folks say, it's not. Inside, the chicken and fried foods look AMAZING. Only tried the hot dogs. Very respectable. Can't wait to go back and try a chuckwagon sandwich. And that fried chicken.
