50-Year Mexican Mainstay La Abeja to Close in Highland Park This Year - Eater LA

"Legendary Highland Park restaurant La Abeja is set to close soon, as owner Rogelio Fonseca plans to sell it off after 50 years of operation. Fonseca’s parents started the restaurant in 1969, and he has been involved since childhood. The venue, known for its chilaquiles and fan-favorite dishes, is located at the corner of Figueroa, straddling Cypress Park. The city of Los Angeles has designated today as “La Abeja Day.”" - Farley Elliott

Slightly hidden gem in Highland Park. Used to live in the area and just found out about this family owned restaurant. Service was great, attentive and very welcoming. Food was delicious, lots of classic Mexican dishes and options. The milanesa was very good!

Armando Lopez

Google
The vibes here are amazing and the food is even better. The service is so friendly and getting to hear the history of it was a joy. Will definitely be coming back!

Google
The food here is very good with delicious vegetarian options. There is free street parking. The building itself looks like an abandoned house, but the door at the corner is open when the Open sign is on. The servers are very nice, take their time explaining what you want to order, and talk to you for a little while if you wish to have a short conversation in either English or Spanish. Prices are good.

Google
One of those old hole in the wall neighborhood restaurants growing up when it was cash only. A family ran joint where the food is still great to this day. In my opinion, it is one of the best places for hard shell shreaded beef tacos. Highly recommend.

Google
La Abeja has been one of my favorite Mexican restaurants for many years because of their consistent quality, flavor, value and personal service. It's always a treat to be able to enjoy a great meal and catch up with Roy and the rest of the staff. Thanks guys!

Samantha Stevens

Google
Roy, I just OD'ed on your frijoles, again!!! I'm in my mid 50s and I started coming here when I was 18. What does that tell you about service? ALWAYS consistent, same guys cooking in the back but with grey hair now including Roy and myself... the greatest memories of eating great food with great people until you can't eat anymore and wind up in a happy food coma! I'll be coming back until I can't come back anymore! I recommend trying everything. You can't go wrong with what you order. Best refried beans ever!!! Especially with breakfast!! Thanks Roy! You rock!! xo

Google
My son just moved into the neighborhood and we tried La Abeja for a quick dinner. A steady stream of local customers which is always a great sign of quality! Nothing fancy but delicious food. We ordered the vegetarian and pork w/green sauce burritos. Customer service was friendly and Poncho is a rock star.

Google
Been coming here since I was a kid. My dad has been bringing me here since then. Very Family oriented with authentic mexican dishes. Owners are awesome people.

Yelp
It was such an awesome place to eat and great service. I also met the owner. Great person. Ty

Yelp
Worst menudo I've ever had. Looked like milky dish water. Tasted the same. Go here for enchiladas and wet burrito type vibes. They don't serve burritos in aluminum foil, which is why I do wet burritos here. Their food is solid. No frills type spot. Good service. Friendly. But that menudo was insulting... had to knock off one star bc of it.
google avatar

Mary J.

Yelp
Sooo good, definitely coming back. The menudo is white but very delicious.. the torta was also very delicious with a lot of cheese, was way more delicious than I expected... service was not bad at all.. nice ambiance to just come chill, have coffee and relax...

Yelp
Two days of yummy in my tummy! Grateful for the service of the Navy. Also, my friend found this place and took care the tab. I appreciate the company that is kept. Spacious and quality.

Yelp
This review is solely for the chile relleno burrito because it's the only thing I have tried here and will likely ever try because it is their most bestest creation. A burrito with a chile relleno in it, what more can you want?? Their beans are really good (#2 beans in NELA behind Chicos), and their chile is cooked well and the cheese is melted and delicious. It's the perfect vehicle for eating chile rellenos on the go. Are there other things here I should probably try? Absolutely. Will I as long as the chile relleno burrito exists? Probably not.

Yelp
Don't walk, run to La Abeja for some of the best Mexican food in LA! Their enchiladas verde is my death row meal. Tastes amazing with the best combination of flavors you can imagine. Treat yourself! They do not serve chips and salsa but you will not leave hungry. Check their schedule. They close for a short stretch each summer for family vacation.

Crisalida R.

Yelp
Menudo plate eas too small And when we ask for a little more grano, the waiter never comes back or explains anything he just ignores completely..
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down...the best Chile Relleno you're gonna find in North East Los Ángeles... Sometimes you're hungry and you don't wanna pay for it... I don't mean you want to eat free... You just don't wanna pay for it... like with your life... your blood essence... your gel fling essence.... No you dont... These skeksis are running lose out there just milking you for everything you got... not these guys at La Abeja... La Abeja are hard working; humble ; not gonna Gank you ... honest ... restaurant running people... You want a burrito for $8.00 bucks that you're not gonna finish?! So you can take home and eat later while you're watching Friends on Netflix... and just chilling... you can .... Share it with the one you love... I ordered the Chile Relleno ...combo ... you get two Chili's and a dorado taco .. de ensebrada... wow... what a taco ...!!! Got two drinks... gas water ... bottled ... good for digestion... My bro got a steak picado burrito that AGAIN was like under $7 that could feed a horse... Portion control does not exist here... The rice and beans were clásico ... It was all hella cheap considering you step into any Mexican restaurant these days they'll take you for $15 or 20 a burrito dish.. Not here... You're not getting stung at LA ABEJA !!! Pure love and honey here...

Yelp
Great food and also great service! Don't judge a place by the location! It's often places like this that surprise you the most. I was very pleased by how delicious the food is here.
google avatar

Ryann V.

Yelp
Love the food here. The beans are the best and always order a burrito. This place deserves more love, 10/10

Yelp
Imagine a rainy day in Irland or Mexico city ,short day in fall and you and your friends craving a warm food in a small sitting area after your favorite soccer team won the game . This is the place for it .place and the guy who runs it was the same since 50 years ago. The food smells great and gentleman took our order gently . Very good helpful gentleman at front and hard working staff at the kitchen in back. Voevo Ranchero is popular here and I was NOT disappointed. I mean rice and beans are same in most of places but that eggs and sauce was amazing complimented with freshly baked tortillas. All that with rock n roll music Recommended .

Yelp
La Abeja is our family's favorite breakfast spot. My parents started taking me here when I was nine years old and now my kids get to enjoy it just as much. The food is amazing. The waiters and owner are always very interactive with our family. The steak, Picado and pork adoba are especially amazing!
google avatar

Jacob M.

Yelp
I've been going here since a child and the food is purely amazing. Always fell loved and if im at home eating one of my mom's home cooked meals. The food here is always served fresh and cooked by order. I recommend coming here to La Abeja to eat some fresh authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem that most don't even know it exists! I've drove bye here more then 25plus years and never knew that this spot was here . Old skool vintage type of atmosphere which I appreciate considering everything around the area is becoming hipster ! If you haven't tried it I strongly suggest this place . As you can see I attacked my burrito and didn't realize I hadn't taken a picture .

Lilia V.

Yelp
This is the worse place to eat. It took ONE HOUR to get our food. Our order was huevos rancheros and a steak picado, nothing fancy or complicated. This place was not even busy. They dismiss you , and ignore you completely. Families were coming after we sat down and they got their order first. I guess because I didn't look Mexican they ignored me. Never coming to this place again. Dirty looking with a terrible customer service
google avatar

Yelp
Best mole' ever. This place is the whole package. Taste. Service. Value. You will not be disappointed.

Edith F.

Yelp
Old school Mexican restaurant with flare. Simple down home cooking. Customer service is the best. Fun hidden gem.
google avatar

Yelp
The restaurant is a throwback to the 70's or 80's with it's old-school charm, the food is a exciting joy to the palate, want to try everything on the menu, 1 day at a time., bon appetite'. To the Latin food Lovers...
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Pure, authentic, Mexican food. It doesn't get any better then this. I recommend the Enchilada's Verdes. The sauce is one of a kind.
google avatar

Jodie T.

Yelp
Absolutely the best restaurant in Los Angeles. The food is delicious and the customer service is amazing. Pure love in that food. 10/10 would recommend. Definitely a hidden gem.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
My friend insisted on taking me to this restaurant because they had the best beans. Upon arrival I wasn't sure of the food. After the first bite I understood the hype, I'm hooked! I had the best green enchiladas I've ever tasted!!
google avatar

M. S.

Yelp
This has the best enchiladas verdes I've ever eaten. It's so fresh and so flavorful that you just have to try it to believe it. The beans are fantastic as well. Evidently, this is a family owned restaurant that's been here for more than 50 years. The decor and ambience is retro, and something you don't find in Los Angeles these days. The service is super friendly. Pancho is a great guy who is chatty and fun to talk to. The whole place has a charm, and Old-school quality to it that I just love. Try it!

Helen V.

Yelp
Fabulous old school no frills Mexican restaurant. Really good enchiladas and rejeno. Chef Pancho has been the kitchen master for over 40 years. The service is spot on. Not the place for you if you are high maintenance.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
Food was delicious and service was outstanding! This is a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant thats been there for over 60 years but i definitely understand why it's still around. I found this spot on yelp because was in the neighborhood. There wasn't a long wait and was seated immediately. Pancho was my server and he was great at explaining the plates and made excellent recommendations. I tried the combo plate with a chile relleno and a quesadilla de maiz. It was so good! I tried an enchilada verde on the side and i was impressed with the taste of the green sauce. Price point was pretty standard and worth what you get. This was my first time here but definitely not my last.
google avatar

Andy B.

Yelp
We've been eating here for 20+ years. Great home cooked Mexican food by a great home town family. They make everything to order so it takes a while. Relax and drink some coffee. One of our favorite restaurants in LA.
google avatar

Jacqueline E.

Yelp
What's up with all the Three Stooges memorabilia? I'm guessing the owners must have been or are huge fans because it's everywhere!!! Well since this little restaurant will be closing soon, I wanted to make sure everyone knew that this spot has the best Huevos Rancheros! They are my all time favorite!! It's a tiny little hole in the wall, I'm very sad to see that it's closing but I am very glad it's by the family's choice and not the rising cost of rent in this area! If you haven't been here, you can still come before the doors close for good! I guarantee anything you order from the menu will leave you wishing they were not closing down! All the dishes taste like real home cooking!! Thanks La Abeja for the Sunday breakfasts that cured our hangovers and for the wonderful memories that my husband and I have of this place!!

Virginia F.

Yelp
Chile relleno burrito is what is suppose to be and it's not the upsetting part is there closed Monday Tuesday I would of returned it the next day, I have my cc receipt I ordered two burritos and a menudo

Oscar L.

Yelp
Best Mexican Food in North East Los Angeles. Family owned and operated. Decently priced.

Mike D.

Yelp
Food was good, prices were definitely affordable for anyone on a tight budget! I would definitely go back!
google avatar

Glydia C.

Yelp
Menudo only made on Saturday and Sunday. For whatever reason, I was hoping Friday counted as a weekend so I was hoping to find some menudo. Sadly for me, Friday is not a weekend day. Instead, I ordered the huevos rancheros, which I read on yelp was really good. I thought it was fine. The dish didn't stand out to me as much as I would have hoped. It was pretty standard. The restaurant itself is quite charming. It has this diner feel to it, but different. The server was helpful.

Andrea M.

Yelp
The best restaurant in LA. Puro Cultura! The food is amazing ! Service is very welcoming ! There hot chocolate and champurrado is to die for!! Amazing delicious place 10/10!!
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
Is there a way to give 6 stars because this was some of best Mexican cuisine I've ever had. A group of friends (on vacation) stumbled upon the places with an hour of landing in LA. Everything about this place just screamed "love". From the decor to the servers to the food itself. Spoke to the owners and they were amazingly nice people. I honestly cannot wait to come back to LA to visit this place and if you're in LA I highly recommend you pay a visit!
google avatar

Ingrid O.

Yelp
Wonderful delicious food. They have the best Machaca burrito, the best Machaca. The best breakfast burrito. If you're in a rush it's better for you to order and pick up. This place is always busy. Breakfast Burrito are da bomb!!!Machaca Burrito!!!! Pork adovada MMMMMM DELICIOUS! EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS! Be patient, they do take a bit to prepare their delicious food!!
google avatar

Yelp
Bestest! Ever!!!! So good! The beans are so authentic that you wonder what the heck kinda beans you've been eating!!
google avatar

Britney B.

Yelp
I've been wanting to check this spot out for a while and I'm soo glad I finally did. It's a little hole in the wall(ish) but in the best way possible. Everyone is personable and friendly. It really feels like you're walking into a neighborhood hang that just happens to also sell delicious plates. I will certainly be back for more.

Janet M.

Yelp
Great chile relleno. No frills, just good Mexican food. Everything we tasted was very tasty and served in a homelike environment by really nice people. We love coming to this little hole in the wall any time we are nearby.
google avatar

Roland G.

Yelp
The food is awesome. Been coming here since 1980. My favorite is the Chile Relleno plate.
google avatar

Sabrina M.

Yelp
My family and I have lived in the neighborhood our whole lives and frequently ate here. On my last visit I saw a humongous rat running in front of the waiter when he was delivering my food, I don't know how he didn't see it but I vowed never to return. It was literally the size of a ferret and seemed too comfortable with staff.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
This place has the worst service ever, the man in the phone was nice said our to go order would be 20 minutes it's been about 40 now and still waiting....I will not be coming back here I won't be able to enjoy my breakfast because now I have to get ready for work. Very disappointing!
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
This is the essence of a neighborhood joint. They've been doing Mexican food right, one plate at a time, for many decades. Many customers know each other, with greeting and conversations flowing from table to table. If you want radicchio on your soft-shell tacos, then go somewhere newer. If you want friendly service and my most favorite chili rellenos or refried beans in all of LA, then go to La Abeja. Their green chili enchiladas and crunchy tacos are also really good. Go soon, because this is still being run by the veterans that started it in 1969. Remember, they closed at 2:30 PM Sunday and reopen at 8 AM Wednesday.

Cosme M.

Yelp
Don't listen to Virginia, they made one mistake, big whoop, it's still the best place to eat. Just because they are closed Monday and Tuesday doesn't mean their food isn't good, their service is great but they are also human so of course there would be errors from time to time but they will correct it no problem. If you look at all the other posts you'll see they have great food and service, don't let this emotionally driven comment keep you from trying this great place. They have been in business for a long time and they will continue to be the best!

Cynthia S.

Yelp
An awesome hole in the wall restaurant I was fortunate to find on an outing in LA. Totally recommend it. The food and service was amazing and can understand why this restaurant has been in business for over 30 yrs!
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
Our family absolutely loves La Abeja! It's our favorite Friday take-out treat. Delicious food with super friendly and accommodating staff. The Adobada Burrito is a must (pictured below), but everything from their crispy hard-shell tacos to their Chiles Rellenos are fantastic!

Elsa M.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Mexican food the service is great and the ambiance is relaxing. Highly recommend this restaurant

Gennady G.

Yelp
the place is cute, the service was top-notch, and I love the wood paneling and also the burritos
google avatar

Brittney B.

Yelp
They have some of the best Mexican food, my father's favorite! Love the rice beans and enchiladas.

Joe A.

Yelp
Love this place - the green Chile plate with flour tortillas is heavenly - just like Mom used to make
google avatar

Sal M.

Yelp
This place has been around for many many many years. Have been here several times but my brother makes it a point to visit this place when he is in town. Mexican food is really hard to come by and when you find your spot people just don't leave it unless the place closes down or you move away. Arrived here and the place hasn't changed one bit, The establishment is hardcore Three Stooges memorabilia which gives it a nice touch. Arrived for breakfast and ordered enchiladas verdes, that came with beans and rice. The enchiladas were good and the rice and beans were actually great, sometimes beans and rice are either too dry or not done well. La Abeja is a place you need to try or return to, hope to get some more breakfast sessions with them soon.
