"All-day barbacoa — traditionally a weekend-only Mexican breakfast — is a tough business, and this family-run Boyle Heights restaurant has managed to put together a full traditional menu of dishes from their native Hidalgo that has given the business longevity. Besides having excellent barbacoa, their tlacoyos, filled with refried beans, potatoes, or cheese and doused with green salsa, cream, and a bit of dried cheese, always satisfy." - Bill Esparza

This place is heaven on earth when it comes to Mexican food and the service is as if my mom was serving me

Google
My first time coming to this place and I hope they get tons of customers because this place is one of the best spots in East LA! Handmade tortillas, gorditas and they use their own recipes. Very traditional cooking like homemade food. The chicharron gordita was my favorite with the green salsa (nonspicy) if you are like me that don't eat spicy foods. I can't wait to come back again.

Google
My family and I were excited to try the barbacoa at this place! We drove an hour to do so. The barboca was delicious. However, the service was terrible and ruined the positive idea of the place. My mother's diet is very limited due to health issues, so we made sure to be clear about how her food should be prepared. The staff did not fulfill our order as requested and did not offer to remake the food as it was ordered. We ended up paying for the wrong order and had to go to another place so mom could eat. I would not recommend this place because of that. The lady serving was not friendly or customer service centrict. It's a shame since their barbacoa is so good

Google
Food was great, we order mixiotes. But customer service sucks!!! We had to wait so they will take our drinks orders. When we order the lady look like is that all, I said yes, and she stood there listening to our conversation, so I request to start our order, she did left but with a bad attitude. We got our order and when a ask for extra plates she brought me a bowl when we were eating tacos from the mixiotes, hello!!! Bowls??? When we finally finished, both workers decided to eat at the same time, and they couldn't bring the check. They ask us to wait. They were done eating but they were still discussing their personal life. We just felt completely uncomfortable. The one star is for having the worst customer service I ever had, and I had bad experience at the fast food but here can soda $2.95, bottle soda $3.95, and so on. No people at the restaurant since the moment we enter to the moment we left.

Google

Google
Scammers. Will overcharge and then not give you what you ordered and then hang up when you call to ask them about it. This business is not to be trusted.

Yesenia Torres

Google
Terrible experience all around. Tables were sticky, parking was metered, and service was terrible. We got there at 5. The waiter had a really bad attitude and would roll his eyes everytime we asked him a question. We were told that we had to order and eat fast because they close at 6. When we asked if it would be enough time to order food and eat, the woman behind the counter was rude as well. We chose to leave after being there for 10 minutes and only ordering a pulque. Their pulque sucked just like customer service. Dont waste your time.

Google
Good food bad service. Me and my wife order two different plates and they totally forgot about our second order. I finished my burrito. We sat their waiting for another 30min and noticed they had already finished makin some one elses burrito before out qusadilla. Horrible service. So i got to eat nd my kids got to eat nd they totally forgot about our other order just to serve other that got their after us. I eventually just told the cashier to cancel the order and the we where verry upset for having us wait so long for a quesadilla combo.

Syrena D.

Yelp
No te molestes, son estafadores que te darán lo incorrecto y te cobrarán de más y luego colgarán cuando los llames al respecto, no es un negocio en el que confiar o tratar. Don't bother they are scammers will give you the wrong thing and overcharge you and then hang up when you call them about it not a business to be trusted or tried. I ordered to 2 breakfast items and a coffee $31 one item was a sausage breakfast burrito that had hot dogs eggs and beans and the other was a la mexicana we asked for ham they didn't put it I had to walk back. So they don't give you what they advertised and over charge you and then hang up when you try to call and ask them about the charge. They just lost two customers who would be there often if it wasn't for this scandalous service practice.

Jairo S.

Yelp
I work down the street from here and they decided to scam my lady when I asked her to go get food for us. When I called them out on it they hung up the phone. Like how you going to do that to your own people trying to help you. I don't recommend going. Try other stops.

Yelp
English and Spanish review. I came here the other day not knowing wat to expect. Walk in, the place was empty. I got attended by two very nice ladies. Didn't know what to order and was trying to budget. She comes back to the table with two salsas red and green and a boat of chips. Still couldn't decide so Instead I asked the cook what she recommends. She pointed to a single plate that was pricier than the rest, but in her confidence on how good it was, I didn't hesitate. Once served I was said to myself. 'Ohhh yeah, she wasn't playin'. A plate with about a quarter pound maybe more of succulent moist Lamb meat, came with rice and beans that were really good. Served with 4 chunky freshly made tortillas. & a side soup which the base is Aju/broth of what the lamb is cooked in. The soup contained garbanzo beans and 3 little side bowls of cilantro , onions , and limes. I would definitely recommend it if you are into Lamb meat or anything similar. This place good. They also serve a WHOLE steamed lamb head. That's what I'm getting next time. If your into cabeza and lengua or even beef cheeks for that matter this I know, is going to be good. Will be back!

Yelp
I tried this spot a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it. The Food is great with a very friendly staff

Dulce L.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday the ambiance is nice the service was great. Food is delicious, handmade tortillas, the quesadillas de flor de calabaza and huitlacoche are so good. The consomé was delicious as well as the barbacoa. Good prices for the meal. Recommend, there's parking on the street. They also have drinks 21+

Wister D.

Yelp
Heartbroken experience on an easy order for pick up. Ordered some chileaquiles verde con carne asada and 2 cafe de olla* ... Prices from Yelp order and phone in were different (3.50 per coffee and 12.99 for the breakfast at pickup vs 250 per coffee and ~10.50 for breakfast +4 for steak on yelp*. They forgot my steak and had no resolution on prices nor why they forgot the steak. I paid $19 at pickup. Lady claimed to be just an employee so owner needs to read this. She didnt enjoy hearing that they needed to check their stuff online. 'Owner' needs to review. I'm a supporter of the neighborhood but not happy when I have to come home to complaints because of messed up orders. Beans tasted watered down. Doesn't help after the bummer experience. I hope you have a better experience. Not sure what happened here but it's worse when people can't just say sorry and try to fix. I gave this place a shot even after reading some other reviews. ‍‍

Hector R.

Yelp
Good food; pancita could be better, good service , hard to find parking space ambiance acceptable .

Vanessa A.

Yelp
I search BARBACOA and got sent to a different place.. upon re doing my search I stumbled upon this place and was pleasantly surprised. They have PULQUE natural and sell barbacoa by lb. Read the other reviews but wasn't discouraged.. this place is called the BARBACHA, they sell barbacoa and that's the house speciality. Ordered by the lb, got a small consomé- food was hot/ ready to eat, soft meat falling apart. Salsa roja was great and tortillas echas a mano

Jorge L.

Yelp
This is such a hole in the wall spot. I never saw it, so I was walking by one day and the food on the glass caught my eye I walked in to get a taco, which was a big taco with a handmade Tortilla and the best Barbacha(barbacoa) I have ever tasted. It was so soft and full of flavor. I have been to many places that serve Barbacoa and this is the best. Without a doubt, their breakfasts are unmatched. The workers there make you feel at home and make you feel like your grandma is cooking for you.

Timmy T.

Yelp
I have to be honest I'm not a fan. The food was expensive and very bland. I'm only leaving a two star because their salsa was pretty good. The service was not great to put it lightly. I called to make an order and the lady who answered was a little rude and acted like I was wasting her time. I didn't particularly mind because sometimes they're like that because they're busy and the food's good. So I ordered two pounds of their barbacoa and a large consume. I came to pick it up and the ambiance of place was dark and boring, the restaurant was completely empty at 3:30 pm on a Monday. I spent 60$ and the amount of food was ridiculous me and my family of 4 got two small tacos worth of meat and a small amount of consume. Which I wouldn't have complained about if the food wasn't so bland. The only flavor you get from the food is lamb and that's it. I don't think they even added salt. All that being said maybe it's just not the style of barbacoa that I'm used to, and maybe I ordered the wrong thing, sadly I don't think I'll be trying it again anytime soon.

Jasmine T.

Yelp
If I could give a no star rating I would! Horrible service and extremely rude people! If you can avoid this place, avoid it like the plague.

Irene Y.

Yelp
**August 2021 Visit: LA Mask Mandate with Indoor Gatherings** I was in the area and looking for some authentic tacos to go. My friend and I stumbled across this shop and we were excited to try some lamb tacos! For $4.25 you can get a 1/4 pound of lamb meat with a handmade tortilla. It's comparable to the amount of two street tacos so it was quite filling. The meat was very tender and paired well with their green salsa, cilantro, and onion. I really want to try the House Specialty which has a whole leg of lamb, rice, beans, salsa, soup, and tortilla. That looked really amazing, so I guess I'll have to come back!

Yelp
The food was delicious but the pulque was the best! My daddy loves pulque and this place had fresh pulque. Great customer service!

Jan C.

Yelp
Seems like a different service standard for Mexicans/non Mexicans... I'm writing this after asking for a drink for the third time. My table hasn't been checked on once whole the surrounding tables get asked how it's going. I like Barbacoa but I won't be going back.

Queen R.

Yelp
The flor de calabaza quesadilla is worth my 35 mile away drive to East LA. It starts with a handmade corn tortilla (larger than the typical size), stuffed with a medley of the blossoms, corn, onion and garlic, and cheese of course. The fresh green and red (hot!) salsas are perfect for dipping. When they have the veggies available, the fresh pressed green juice is my favorite drink to balance out all that cheesy goodness.

Tony J.

Yelp
Nice cozy little Mexican place when you walk in. Food is freaking bomb they give you ample service so you might want to share with people. Salsa roja is bomb, but if you're not used to chili you might not want it impacts the kick. I ordered the wet burrito and let me tell you I am a huge eater and I could not finish this burrito it is massive it's probably best for two people to try to take this bad boy down. Although I did take down a big taco Barbacoa. Tlacoyos are also bomb. Come hungry

Yelp

The customer service is terrible!!! There are a couple of young people (male and female) who do not have the slightest education. Don't leave your money in this business, there are many more options.

Yelp
La Barbacha - Barbacoa estilo Hidalgo - 2510 Cesar Chavez This is my first time here. Delicious. The tortillas are handmade. The hot sauces are tasty and hot. The food is tender and well seasoned. The rice, beans and fideo were just like as if mom made them. I recommend. No beer.

Olga G.

Yelp
They are supposed to open at 8:00 am on Saturdays and today 9/10 I was until 8:26, and they did not open, I spoke and they did not answer, ask the lady of the business next door and she said that they are never punctual there is no fixed schedule . What a pity. They should remove that schedule from Google.

Benjamin H.

Yelp
PULQUE PERFECTO! Delicious, fresh, authentic Mexican food, great service, small ma & pa restaurant w/ good vibes. LOVE this place!

Manuel S.

Yelp
In town on a taco crawl with some local friends of mine. They had suggested this place because of the quality and reputation of the food. Simple, we had a pound of barbacoa and tortillas. Combined with the salsa, cilantro, and onions the taco was tender and very flavorful. Based upon the food, I have nothing but the highest praise here. ALTHOUGH!!!!!!... I absolutely love jugo de zanahoria (carrot juice) and when I see it on a menu at a Mexican restaurant, I usually jump all over it as it pairs well. Also, because it takes quite a few carrots to yield a glass of jugo, I appreciate any place that commits to putting it on their menu. THAT SAID, if you're going to "stretch" your jugo out with ORANGE JUICE to fill the glass and try to pass it off as jugo de zanahoria, I'm going to call you out on it every time! The food was great, but trying to get away with something and sneak it by me just makes me feel disrespected and makes me wonder what other corners they're cutting.

Anthony N.

Yelp
I discovered La Barbacha after watching an episode of chef's table where they featured a tacoria in Philadephia that specialized in lamb barbacoa. I thought I'd google to see if there was a comparable place and La Barbacha popped in my search. It was a hot summer afternoon when we came to the restaurant, the server were very accommodating and asked if it was our first time. It took us a while what to order, aside from the barbacoa. We ended up getting 3 orders of the gorditas, a jamaica, and a horchata. The food was delicious and came in a lot of serving alongside a serving of soup. We were stuffed after our meal. I definitely plan on coming back and recommending this place to my friends for some delicious barbacoa! The salsa they make is amazing and definitely adds on to the food.

Hani A.

Yelp
I think this place is a great restaurant to go to if you like sheep Barbacoa. Went there with a friend and had a pound of Barbacoa and it was more than enough. Make sure also to order their broth, it was also delicious. Will definitely come here again to their Barbacoa.

Cristina C.

Yelp
I am sad to be giving this place a one star pero it is what it is. Today we had the worst breakfast ever. Rice was hard, frijoles were tasteless, tortillas a mano were more like tostadas, and to make matters worse, the huevo on my chilaquiles was burnt! Barbacha, you disappointed us today. This will sadly be the last time we come to dine. Adios asta forever.

Christopher C.

Yelp
Great place to eat some old-school Barbacoa. The ladies behind the kitchen and waitresses are very nice and attentive. I ordered the Barbacoa plate for one which comes with rice, beans, Barbacoa and a plate of consommé. The taste of this Barbacoa was similar to the kind they make back in MX. Smoky, tender, and easy to shred. No long lines, no hype - this is the real deal. Also be prepared to pay for good food. This idea that really good food should also be dirt cheap is a yelpers mistake. Enjoy!

Venuse G.

Yelp
Hidden gem in LA. Gosh I can't wait to describe to you how epic my experience was. Let's get started: Atmosphere: not a lot of seating but such a fun Mexican vibe. Customer service: attentive and sweet. Food: we ordered some cafe de olla, barbacoa and some quesadillas. It came with consume, soup, rice, beans, two types of salsa, and chips. I felt I was in Mexico City. The tortilla was handmade. Every item was exceptional except for the salsa that was average. I wish they made their salsa more appetizing than plain. Cost: it's affordable. Definitely coming back. If the owners have a chance to read my review, I hope they make their green salsa instead of it being plain raw tomatillo salsa mixing it with avocado and the red salsa to have a mix of tomatillo and maybe some tomato with cilantro to make it more Sabroso :).

Eddie P.

Yelp
I Love this place the food is so delicious and customer service is so welcoming the choices of salsas are delicious The food is bomb

Glory A.

Yelp
Hole in a wall always has the best food. My family and I were driving around looking for a place to eat breakfast this side of town and we came across this place. Not a big place but very clean and street parking only. Let me tell you about the food! The carne asada burrito was so flavorful, fresh ingredients, very authentic! So if you're craving a good Mexican burrito, this is the place to go! The plate that my husband got, so bomb, most restaurant don't understand the authenticity of making chilaquiles but this place did, the flavors were all combined and not one out powered the other! The carne asada was thinly sliced and no fat what so ever, juicy and tender! Must try! Great place!

Jet L.

Yelp
IMO this place makes the best barbacoa, I never really liked it because it always comes out gamy but this place knows what they're doing. It's not gamy at all. has a great taste and their salsa is fire. Family owned places are the best places.

Eduardo G.

Yelp
Food is delicious and the service from the ladies is awesome. The place is small but It's really good specially the hand made tortillas. Totally recommend we only been there 2 times but we don't regret. They have a variety of dishes but we go for the barbacoa de Borrego. Their salsa is spicy but delicious.

Erika R.

Yelp
Really good food!!!! Very delicious Staff very friendly and quick service!!! Tortillas made by hand' definitely will come back again!!!! Ohhh and the red salsa!!! Omg!!!! Boammmm af orchata too!!! Very authentic taste!!!!!!!

Shane M.

Yelp
Very nice ladies but they close so early. Meat was pretty pricey for what we got and was a bit dry. It was toward the end of the day though so will have to give it a try in the morning.

Jesse S.

Yelp
Worst chilaquiles I've ever had no flavor looks like they just cut tortillas and threw mole sauce from a jar over the top of them and tried to add flavor by bathing them in onions and cilantro and to top it off I added asada to the top of it and they forgot to add it the only good thing from my order was the my coffee and the beans

Marisol G.

Yelp
Great service! The ladies make you feel at home. My 3 stars is purely based on the pansita with salsa roja. It was very bland and the chili tasted a bit raw. Maybe its the Hidalgo style? They had 2 options green or red salsa. The carne masisa is great!! Very juicy and flavorful. I will have to come back and try other items on the menu, maybe ill add more stars.

Erika P.

Yelp
Love this place I got the gorditas asada and the Barbacoa plate as well delicious my 2nd time here. Make sure you try this spot

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Wish I would've taken a picture before digging in! Stumbled across this gem while browsing for authentic Mexican food. Needless to say that it was delicious! Definitely will be returning, extremely content that this was my first dine in restaurant of choice after the covid-19 restriction was lifted.

Enrique I.

Yelp
Been years since I had barbacoa. This was a nice finding, and very close to the real deal. Also, the pulques are amazing. We loved the pecan and strawberry "curados".

Anne A.

Yelp
The reason for my visit was not for the Hidalgo-style barbacoa, but to try their tlacoyo. I last tried tlacoyo in Mexico City from a street vendor. For Hidalgo-style barbacoa, la Barbarcha is the only place I know of so far to try it. People are known to travel far for a taste of this barbacoa. In Mexico City, there is known specialist who sells Hidalgo-style barbacoa at the market in Roma weekly from Friday to Sunday only. LA is lucky to have some barbacoa specialists available all week long. I ordered potato tlacoyo, one barbacoa taco on a housemade tortilla, consomme de barbacoa, gordita de puerco, and a glass of pulque. The barbacoa was tender and mellow in flavor. I did enjoy it with the toppings I added and the freshly made tortilla. I found the warm consommé de barbacoa to be more pleasurable of the two. The gordita was a little bland and needed more flavor. I enjoyed my tlacoyo de papas. Albeit different in appearance from what I had on a street corner in Mexico City which was served on a blue corn tortilla. The service was a little lacking during my visit because there was one server assigned to all the tables, so set your expectations low. I was left with no beverage during the last half of my meal. I asked for water and never received it. The total price for lunch seemed high for what I ordered and the service level. For me, I much prefer the barbacoa style and flavor at Aqui es Texcoco.

Tracy N.

Yelp
First timers! Really amazing gorditas! Great service ! Came in to try there micheladas! Turned out amazing! Ended up drinking 3! Drank it faster then I drink water ! Definitely coming back again!

M S.

Yelp
WOW...This place is amazing...was greeted by a beautiful waitress who was very attentive to the lunch experience I had. I went with the house special of Barrboca..with handmade corn tortillas..and all the fixings..they brought out a fideo soup to start...the salsa's are to die for..the chips amazing..you want authentic come here.Menu is selection is outstanding. You won't be disappointed.

Gerardo G.

Yelp
They have two outdoor tables for eating. The barracoa was so tender. The green sauce and homemade tortilla went perfect with the meat. I will definitely come back to eat here again.

Grigor S.

Yelp
I originally found this place from tacolandia 2016 and their lamb barbacoa was amazing! So I have been here only twice at the moment and every time it's been great. They start off with fideo soup, chips, verde and the BEST roja salsas, which you can taste that time went into them. Really smoky, textured and very spicy! The barbacoa with consome is delicious, you get handmade tortillas (not to think or thin, great flavor) beans, rice is the best deal, great portion, you will leave satisfied. Clearly the lamb is the star, it's just soo tender and flavorful. The mixiote is good also with not a spicy peppery paste, but you don't get too much meat and some bones. I have had good service here. Can't wait to come here again!

Luis V.

Yelp
I grew up in Mexico and I have eaten barbacoa in many places in Puebla, Hidalgo, Veracruz, and Mexico City to name a few. The barbacoa we tried today is among the best I ever tried. It was perfectly cooked with the authentic flavor that only slow cook in agave leaves can provide. Tortillas were freshly made and not dried up as in many places that claim to have hand made tortillas. I had an oatmeal pulque curado that was delicious with real pulque not the canned version served in other places. Overall this was a delicious barbacoa meal and the services was very friendly. It felt like Mexico!!

Stanley M.

Yelp
Frequenting hole-in-the-wall spots is typical for an authentic foodie. Considering they are generally family owned and operated, one will be treated with more generosity. I was recommended to this place by a colleague who's been coming here for 2 years and continuously raves about the dishes. So, I gave it a shot. I ordered the Brisket a La Mexicana. In the meantime, I was offered a few samples dishes (complimentary) as I waited for the order which caught me by surprise. When my dish arrived, I first cut into the meat and the temperature was a perfect MR-M. Great place with excellent service.

Nelida C.

Yelp
We stayed in town for a few days decided to try this place after trying one the day before and I loved the food! Staff was kind helpful, the drinks were amazing great price I will for sure be coming back for there gorditas!!

Osvaldo C.

Yelp
The food had no flavor, everything needed salt. Wouldn't recommend this place did not taste authentic.
