Our Most Exciting New Hotels for November 2022

"In 1785, King Louis XVI bought a gift for his wife, Marie-Antoinette: a mansion built on the ruins of a 13th-century castle on Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France. Today, that mansion is La Baronnie Hôtel & Spa, a boutique hotel with all the elegance of days gone by – plus a sun-drenched Cinq Mondes spa." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

We were 4 couples celebrating 2 birthdays and had a fabulous 3 night stay at La Baronnie. The pre arrival support was great from help booking airport taxis to booking and recommending restaurants. La Baronnie is a hidden gem of cool understated old school luxury. Each room is unique and luxurious with fluffy pillows, high quality mattresses and crisp sheets. The garden and outdoor pool were superb and tranquil when we needed to retreat from the busy harbour, 2 minutes walk away. The staff were all so smiley and welcoming and the owners are also around to give a very friendly greeting. Veronique was simply superb and we all had the most memorable stay. Breakfast is a must do at least once as is the great cocktail bar - many visits!

Beautiful hotel, in the perfect situation for a visit to the Ile de Re. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. As wonderful as the hotel and the Ile de Re are, and they are wonderful, it’s the hotel team that make your experience truly memorable. Nothing was too much trouble throughout my stay. I arrived significantly earlier than I had indicated when booking, not a problem, had access to the car park, and as it was ready, my room from early in the morning. There is a lot of outside space in which to relax, which is remarkable given its location a few steps away from the port. I enjoyed the bar each evening before and after dinner, where the welcome was always warm and the cocktails first rate. (try the Strawberry Daiquiri and the “Regroni”). I have booked again for September, as next Summer feels way too long to wait before another visit. I do have some photos but they don’t really do the place justice, you need to visit.

Just returned from this amazing hotel. We arrived very early, no problem checking in well before official time. Parking is safe and to the rear of the property. The pool is in the sun most of the afternoon, if you use it. The courtyard area in front of the bar is a lovely spot to enjoy a relaxing drink, breakfast indoors and/or outdoors is great. We loved our room up on the 2nd floor and will look to stay in that one again when we come back. Words don't really convey the ambience of the hotel that makes it just so much better than the many other hotels we stay in. I can't explain the vibe, but it's relaxed but very organised (in the background) that you don't realise how well run this place must be. It feels like a nice genteel family home and the owners make you feel most welcome, without being intrusive.

Amazing hotel. We stayed in the Baron room which exceeded our expectations. The cleaning team were fantastic as it was exceptionally cleaned everyday. The pillows and bed were super comfy. There was private bike storage which was handy. The bar and garden area is a beautiful space to relax. The reception and breakfast staff were all friendly and helpful apart from one receptionist. He came across rude and sarcastic every time you asked a simple question, like we were bothering him (how outrageous of us to ask where to get coffee in the port or how much a taxi is to the airport). Unfortunately he was on reception every morning and could not be avoided. We still did not want to mark down to 4 stars, as that would not be fair to the rest of the staff who were amazing. Would definitely stay here again.

We have just spent five fabulous, relaxing days at La Baronnie the last visit being eight years ago. The property oozes charm , the staff were all superb , and the owners delightful. If your preference is a modern ,beige /grey generic hotel with efficient but detached staff this is not the place for you. We will not be leaving it another eight years before we return.

Extremely Disappointing Stay Major Issues with Basic Comfort and Misleading Information I recently stayed at La Baronnie and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience that I feel compelled to share with other potential guests. No Air Conditioning = Unbearable Nights The most significant problem was the complete lack of air conditioning in the rooms. This is absolutely unacceptable for a 4-star hotel charging premium rates. During our stay, the rooms became stifling hot and uncomfortable, making it nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep. We had to keep windows open all night, which brings its own set of problems in a hotel located in the town center. With windows open for ventilation, you’re subjected to: • lack of privacy due to windows and drapes open • The ongoing noise of a fan • Flying insects • No respite from the heat even at night For a hotel that markets itself as a luxury retreat, this is a fundamental failure in guest comfort. Parking Fiasco - Misleading Information The second major issue was with parking. The hotel advertises “paid parking available” on their website, which led us to believe we could secure a spot upon arrival. However, when we showed up, we were told that since we hadn’t reserved parking in advance, they couldn’t accommodate us because their parking facility was oversold. This is misleading at best. If parking requires advance reservation and has limited availability, this should be clearly stated upfront, not discovered upon arrival after a long journey. Overall Experience While the building has charm and the location being a block from the port is convenient, these basic operational failures overshadow any positive aspects. When you’re paying premium prices for what’s supposed to be a 4-star experience, you expect fundamental comforts like climate control and honest, upfront information about services. The combination of sleepless, sweltering nights and the parking deception made this stay far more stressful than relaxing. For the prices they charge, there are much better options available on Île de Ré that actually deliver on their promises. Would I Return? Absolutely not. Until they install proper air conditioning and fix their misleading parking policies, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone visiting during warmer months. Bottom Line: Save your money and look elsewhere for accommodations that actually provide the comfort and transparency you deserve.

It was our first visit to both Ile de Re and la Baronnie. We had a wonderful time. La Baronnie is a hidden gem in the middle of the town. |It's charm, and gardens quickly weave their magic, creating a cocoon of oeace and calm. The pool is the icing on the cake!|The staff were helpful, kind and made our stay even more special. Special thanks to Anabel, Steven, Maxim, Marine, and Charlotte.|We hope to return again in future. |Thank you.

Hotel Review: La Baronnie Hôtel & Spa – Teritoria, Île de Ré La Baronnie is undeniably one of the most beautiful and atmospheric places you can stay on Île de Ré. Nestled right in the heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the property exudes historic charm and elegance from the moment you arrive. The building itself is stunning – full of character, history, and lush surroundings that make you feel like you’re stepping into a refined private estate. Our room was tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, and maintained to a high standard. It’s clear that care and attention have been put into both the interiors and the overall environment of the hotel. Breakfast was generally good, with fresh options and a peaceful setting, though there were a few slip-ups – like finding a yogurt that had expired several days earlier. Small things, but they matter when the bar is set high. That said, the experience was slightly let down by inconsistent service and an overly rigid approach to rules. For example, when the bar was closed for the day, we asked if we could buy a drink and sit in the sun on the inner courtyard. We were told that this was not allowed – drinks had to be consumed in the back garden, which, on that particular day, was windy and cold. When we politely asked why, a staff member named Sara responded rather curtly and unprofessionally: “Because those are the rules.” At checkout, we had a simple question, but the same staff member took a phone call right in the middle of our conversation – without excusing herself or acknowledging the interruption. Moments like these chipped away at the otherwise luxurious feeling of the stay. In summary: La Baronnie is a truly exceptional place, with beautiful architecture, a perfect location, and a serene atmosphere. But for a hotel in this category and price range, service needs to be more consistent – and more attuned to guest experience. The potential is there for five-star memories, but the guest approach needs a thoughtful tune-up.
