La Bartola

"Chef/owner Ivan Castro developed a passion for cooking at the heels of his mother and grandmother, and he shares the vibrant spirit and bold flavor of his native Mexico City at La Bartola. Bright colors and vivid artwork echo the upbeat mood here, but this isn't your typical taqueria. Instead, traditional and authentic Mexican dishes offer a surprise—they're completely meat-free. Black sesame tostadas with salsa macha negra and sikil pak are a perfect opener. Tacos made from purple corn are eye-catching, while braised hibiscus is a delicious substitute for the typical meat. Quesadillas are filled with a mix of softened roasted potatoes, refried beans, vegetarian cheese and crisped onions. Wash it all down with a mezcal, Mexican beer or tequila." - Michelin Inspector

The menu is fully plant based with plenty of authentic Mexican dishes. We tried the guacamole, the moles and a few cocktails. We also tried all the items on the dessert menu. The orange tamale dessert was 10/10. Service was great, the waitstaff really knew all the dishes very well. Reservations are highly recommended!

Google
It’s all about their delicately designed menu, presentation and priceless taste , flavours and texture. The unique menu leaves you flabbergasted, wondering if these delectable dishes can be so immaculately curated created to bring out the right flavour. They are all vegan and gluten-free to escalate your experience. Their guacamole and chocolate cake are once in a lifetime experience, and I highly recommend it if you are one for a scrumptiously tasting, not too decadently sweet chocolate cake. It’s worth a try, absolutely!!! A place to go to for a special occasion and to celebrate something special. It’s terrific:) leaves you craving for more and longing to visit again soon.

We had a lovely table sitting at the patio, our server Jennifer is amazingly knowledgeable about the food they have. Very attentive and friendly. Cocktails are very lovely and delicious as well. However, the food was a big disappointment. We went with the tasting menu, only liked the corn appetizer and mushroom main. Cantaloupe salad was very hard to chew, the dessert crust has a weird texture very difficult to cut open with a spoon. It’s a $75 set menu plus 20% mandatory tip. But the portion was small. Might still come back for a drink. But not for the food anymore.

HEAVEN for vegans and vegetarians. Been here 3 times now and never disappointed. The flavours are phenomenal and unique. We got the tacos and mole Blanco! Could not as for a better experience and food. Will be returning for sure

I will start my review by saying that I was recommended this restaurant by friends who are vegetarian but I am not. My wife and I came here for date night. We arrived on time and the service was fantastic. We actually had a spot at the bar booked but they placed us at a table as one was available. The vibe was great and the servers were very helpful. However the food itself I struggled with. We had the tasting menu at $75/ person; my wife had the wine pairing which was a good add as it was well thought through. However, Aside from the lions mane steak and the Mexican corn I fount the food really lacking. The desserts were not good at all and the vegetables/ salad were not enjoyable. The cocktails however were amazing. The cost as well was very high, we had 1 drink to start then I had one cocktail and my wife had the wine pairing and it was over $300 with the tip. Overall I would say worth trying but not somewhere we would come back to again.

Google
Highly recommend La Bartola! Delicious vegan Mexican tasting menu. The food is unforgettable. Amazing flavours and combinations. The La Chalupa mocktail was so delicious that I had two - it is not too sweet, just right. The dessert portion of the tasting menu was also delicious. The ambiance of the back patio is gorgeous and the service is top tier.

Yelp
We came to this restaurant for belated birthday celebrations for myself. We have been trying different restaurants that I've been Michelin rated to see what the experiences like. I loved the ambiance and set up in this restaurant. It was so cute and charming. Our server had great attention to detail and really spoke to us with the meaning of all the dishes. My friends loved this place. They would go back in a heartbeat. I found that the flavour was not to my pallet and so not some thing that I would rush to get back to.

Yelp
This place is on the Michelin list and it's SO well-deserved. The entire menu is so inventive! We're not even vegan, but we left so full and happy! The highlights were definitely the moles -- I had no idea how rich and creamy these could be! We had the prix-fixe menu, and with 6 dishes to choose from, it was a total joy to be able to try everything between 2 people.

Yelp
The service was great, and the food was quite experimental. Really incredible flavors. The guacamole was very fresh. There was something missing - I can't quite put my finger on it. It was not your typical Mexican restaurant, but was still very good.

Yelp
My friends recommended this place as I am vegan and gf. My family reserved a table for my birthday and I checked the menu online and was very excited. When we arrived we had to have a tasting menu which didn't have some of the options I saw online. The servers were excellent and very accommodating. My son does not like mushrooms and his girlfriend does not like mushrooms or jackfruit which made the tasting menu options very limited. We had 2 of the mocktail trios, one margarita trio and a single mocktail which added over $100 to the bill. The mocktails were quite light on flavour but my son liked the margaritas. The appetizer course was enjoyed by all. There was so much flavour in each item. The main courses were good but not enjoyed as much as the appetizer. My son was still very hungry after the 2 courses but it was enough food for me and the others. The dessert course was the least favourite. Most opted for the chocolate taco, expecting a taco shaped chocolate. They were let down as it was a tortilla with chocolate in it and it wasn't very sweet. I went for the option described as creme brûlée. A flavourless thick gelatinous item with a nice corn powder. The chocolate ice cream with it was nice. We ordered an extra dessert so we could taste them all: the lime dessert, which everyone liked. Overall I liked that I could eat everything without worry (vegan and gf) but I wish there was more flavour and more options. It was very pricey....almost $500 for a party of 5 including tax and gratuity.

Yelp
Impeccable all around. My girlfriend and I went here recently for an anniversary meal and were thoroughly impressed. She is vegan and has dined here several times before. I'm an omnivore but like a lot of plant-based/vegan meals too. The service was fantastic and attentive, the food was inventive, original and delicious. I loved the corn soup the most. Wish the food had a tiny bit more spice but that's probably down to my preference to hot food. Loved it.

Yelp
Vegan Mexican food. Didn't know it existed! Very adorable restaurant. Cozy decor. The staff were super friendly. Our server was very helpful. I ordered the fixed menu and she went through each item I ordered. I would definitely come back again. I like that it's vegan and it was delicious!!!

Yelp
I'm vegetarian, and I found this place on Yelp while looking for vegan places in Toronto. Me and my bf came here without a reservation, and we expected to just sit at the bar since the tables were most likely all full. The hostess kindly said there was one table available, and so we got to sit down as a walk-in! The service was amazing, the hostess and servers were very attentive and explained the dishes and answered questions we had about the menu. We ordered the Mexican street corn soup as a starter and wow, it was delicious! It was rich with flavor and had a smokiness to it; it ended up being our favorite dish. We got the mushroom suadero tlacoyo and mole blanco as our mains, and they were so delicious. The mole blanco was creamy and rich, with the mushrooms being the perfect addition to the dish. The mushroom suadero tlacoyo was seasoned well and the spicy sauce it came with tasted amazing, we couldn't get enough. Every item on the menu looked yummy, so we'd love to return and try different dishes. They offer a tasting menu for $75 that looks like a great deal, so maybe next time we'll order that. La Bartola is a fine dining, vegan gem that is worth the price and won't break the bank; I couldn't recommend it more!

Yelp
We were really impressed with the food, the flavours were tasty and met our expectations knowing they are highly rated. We had the cactus taco, hibiscus taco, jackfruit taco and they were great. I also loved the Mexican street corn smoky . The ambiance is really cosy and special. I'm glad we checked it out and would want to try some of their other dishes too.

Yelp
Simply amazing! Vegan Mexican food that stays true to its roots while using the best quality fresh ingredients. Tortillas are always made fresh using heritage Mexican corn with in house made masa harina. The cocktails are imaginative, colorful and bursting with flavor. The service was outstanding: our waiter went above and beyond explaining all the items on the a la carte menu and was professional at all times. We absolutely enjoyed our time at Bartola and we're sure to come back next time we're passing by.

Yelp
I admit to being skeptical when I heard "Vegan Mexican food". For a culture that prides itself on food made with pork, beef and chicken, I wasn't sure how they could pull it off. But La Bartola is absolutely outstanding. It deserves the accolades that it gets. The food is primarily Oaxacan, with some exceptions. I shared a number of dishes with a friend, so it's hard to remember everything we ate. We had multiple Mole dishes, which were amazing. These included the White Mole dish and the Roasted Plantain Tamal with red mole. Both were outstanding - not overly spicy and the flavours were subtle without being overwhelming. We also had the Chef's Tasting taco menu - amazing! Finally we ended with two of the three deserts (the chocolate cake and the dulce de leche) - again, amazing! Finally the service. It was unusually friendly, helpful, and supportive in our first visit to the restaurant. While service wasn't super-fast, the food came out relatively quickly and we were not left hungry at any point. Maybe the mezcal helped? :) This restaurant is highly recommended.

Yelp
These guys are kind of rude. Plus they don't offer corkage (i.e bring your own wine, pay a fee to open). Kind of limiting.

Yelp
We had an impeccable meal here. Everything was fantastic. The space was lovely, the service was attentive, and the food is phenomenal. Our first dish was the very best - the tostada appetizer. There were layers and layers of flavor - bright, sweet, vinegar, umami, yummy plus cruny, crispy, soft. It really was a perfect dish created by flavor scientists. We loved everything else we ate, too. But let's back up. My partner in dine had an awesome lychee and prosecco mocktail. Before giving up alcohol for good, we was a big fan of sparkling wine and until this meal, he had no idea non-alcoholic bubbly existed. I had a sip and this drink was very good. In addition to the tostada, we had the tetela. I'm a huge fan of stuffed foods, so this beautiful tri-colored corn triangle filled with beans was right up my alley. However, it was the hibiscus and onions on the side that really put the dish over the top. I added a small scoop of salsa verde to ever fork full and it was just heaven in my mouth. Next we had the white mole and the 6 taco platter. The white mole comes with 3 fresh tortillas to put your mole, mitake mushrooms, potatoes, and broccoli in. This was quite goood. The six taco platter came with 2 of each taco listed on the menu - jackfruit pastor, something with cactus, and hibiscus. The hibiscus one was out favorite - smoky and delicious with just the right amount of delicious fat to give you a meaty experience. Because the good was all so amazing, we figured we would be missing out if we didn't have dessert. The key lime avocado sorbet was crazy good with the crumbled pinole cookie underneath, cherry sauce on top, and chocolate tostada like a Mohawk above it all. We also had the pineapple tamal which was crazy good and I finished the meal with the hottest cappuccino I have ever been served, which was delicious. This was a truly excellent meal. We will definitely be back for this plant based Oaxacan goodness.

Yelp
I was initially very unenthusiastic to try this place when I was asked to go there with some friends. I am a unabashed carnivore, so the prospect of a vegan restaurant evoked past experiences I had of feeling I was eating horse chow or whatever they bothered to sweep from the floor. Not here. I love Mexican food for its complexity, nuance and texture. This place takes indigenous veggie ingredients and elevates them to sublime form with unexpected creative fluorishes. The people who are complaining must have gone somewhere else. The chef here is amazing! So is the service! The staff carefully explains to you every ingredient, explains the way to eat everything and is hospitable and elegant. We went for the taco sampler and we loved every bit of it. Fillings varied from hibiscus flowers (delicious!), mushrooms (amazing!), and different kinds of vegetable concoctions (one better than the other). Tortillas are made here, the way they are supposed to be made, and use different kinds of heritage corn grains. No deep fried junk here. The other dishes have never disappointed us, even though we ended ordering everything in the menu. This restaurant deserves Michelin stars or something like it. Deserts are exquisite. Oh! If not knowing the Spanish or Nahuatl for the ingredients is a problem for you, boohoo!...No Tex Mex here. Maybe you can bother to nicely ask the waiters to share their detailed understanding of what they serve. We did and learned interesting things about the indigenous Mexican ingredients that make up the food. World Class!!!

Yelp
I left this restaurant with mixed feelings. When it comes to staff friendliness and ambiance, it rates 5/5. The place itself is beautifully decorated and it feels upscale.  Where this place falls short is food, surprisingly. The menu is hard to read for non-Spanish speakers. There are simply too many terms in Spanish I could not understand. Photos of the dishes would've helped immensely. Guacamole appetizer was bland and had almost no taste. I felt like I was eating mashed up avocado with nothing mixed in. The tacos were tasteless. Having made very tasty vegan tacos at home on my own I found it odd that the flavor for the most part was simply missing. Another problem with the dishes is that the taco fillings were all mashed up, wet and soft. There was nothing to bite into, nothing substantial to chew. When I took a bite, I had just some kind of bland, soft and tasteless mix in my mouth. Where were all the spices and flavor Mexican food is so famous for? I would rate the food 2/5 and because the items are so pricey and I hate to say that the value for money when it comes to food only is 1/5. Really love the ambiance and service of the restaurant but it's a hard no when it comes to going back there again. It was the most expensive Mexican meal I've ever had and the least tasty.

Yelp
This restaurant impressed me with their creative and fusion menu. I highly recommend the hibiscus tacos ( flowers!) and their guacamole. Fine prized cocktails and beverages and a cozy yet upscale atmosphere made this restaurant one of my favorite go-to places in the city.

Yelp
Delicious vegan food. The dinner was so good I had to come by to try the brunch! Today I had the Blue Tetela - hearty a bit spicy and super delicious - and the tacos. I recommend the green chorizo taco - hearty and tasty - and the hibiscus taco - so much smokiness and complex flavours. My friend had the Horchata drink and loved it. If your going for dinner I recommend the broccoli tamales and the corn on the cob. The cocktails are also delicious.

Yelp
Yum yum yum! Such a great vegan option on college street. Delicious Mexican food! I was blown away by the hibiscus tacos, very flavourful. The horchata was so delicious and comforting. Not too sweet, with the perfect amount of spice. Out server Sylvia was super attentive, friendly, and gave great recommendations. Definitely worth the visit!

Yelp
Amazing selection of food and cocktails. Perfect atmosphere to enjoy every morsel. Highly recommend especially to those hesitant about plant based menus. Service was perfect. Too bad I live on west coast as would definitely come more often.

Yelp
I really hate to say this, but this was the worst vegan food I've ever had to date (and also most expensive). I don't understand the glowing reviews but because of the reviews I tired this place out. For starters, the guacamole appetizer should have been my first clue that this was gonna be a bad experience. I'm not sure how you can possibly manage to make guacamole tasteless but they did. The tortillas or flatbread that accompanied the guacamole was super dry, super crispy, and once again tasteless. The tacos were the most disappointing tacos I've ever had in my life. As a world traveller, I've been so blessed and fortunate to taste so many different authentic cuisines with Mexico city being one of those places. The tacos here put Mexican cuisine to utter shame. The inside of the tacos were a hot mushy mess, and once again completely devoid of any flavor. I know the difference between Americanized-Mexican food and authentic Mexican cuisine and so I thought I knew what to expect but I was wrong. The Leche cake desert was also a huge let down, just another mushy weird sweet mess. In 2022 in this city, it's not hard to make great tasting vegan cuisine. I honestly make better Mexican dishes at home, and I'm not a chef. The good was the service and the decor. Everyone was pleasant, super nice, and attentive. The staff and the chef were 5 stars hands down. The decor and the music were fantastic and quite frankly the only thing that was enjoyable. However, I didnt't pay almost $200 to go to a fancy restaurant for the decor. Unfortunately, this place was an overall disappointment. The most expensive meal I've ever had in this city and throughout my travels abroad. Sadly, would not recommend.

Yelp
Vegan Mexican. We are not vegan but vegetarian, but it is so nice to go to a place where you can order everything on the menu. Everything was super delicious and served beautifully. We ordered the herbed Guacamole as an appetizers and got the Tetele and pistachio Pipian. These are items we have never had in a Mexican restaurant. The desserts were also amazingly presented - with vegan replacements for things like milk and cheese. This place is pricey but worth every dollar

Dora G.

Yelp
I was really excited and had such high hopes when going to dine here. The place has a nice ambiance but the food is mediocre. I ordered a few dishes as I was excited to try everything. Of all of the dishes I ordered the only one I liked was the jackfruit taco, all others were not memorable. Blue corn Tortillas are really good, but other than that I would not recommend this place. I ordered the birria and it was basically a tasteless broth to which they added what tasted like unseasoned canned jackfruit, a lot more effort could have been put into this dish. I honestly could not eat it. I ordered a bit of salsa macha to flavor the mostly insipid dishes, but oh! they charge you extra for that. I came out of this place feeling hungry and ripped off. Bad food, overrated and overpriced. What a shame!

Yelp
My friend and I were trying to find a place for dinner on a Saturday night and decided to try La Bartola due to the amazing 5 star reviews. We love Mexican food and came without knowing that it's a plant based restaurant and were both so impressed. We ordered the Herbed Guacamole with Poblano Tostadas and the Taco Tasting Platter to share. The guac was made fresh and creamy and the tostadas were perfect. The taco platter was a perfect option as we got to try 6 different soft tacos that were each so delicious and unique, unlike any tacos I've ever tried. The tacos are small and probably wouldn't be enough for 2 people to share if you're hungry so I would recommend ordering another dish as well. We were so impressed with authenticity of this restaurant - the decor, the staff, and the flavors of the food. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a cute backyard patio with heaters and hanging lights. The staff was super friendly and attentive and whether you are on a plant based diet or not, you will absolutely love the food. I can't wait to go back and try their other items.

Yelp
How wonderful, service was sincere and lovely everywhere and throughout. From those at the front, to our server Carlos, to even the kitchen staff member who smiled at me as I was leaving. The tortillas were so fresh. I really enjoyed the taste of everything. My friend and I split the 6 x 4"taco sampler ($29) - 2 jackfruit, 2 cacti, and 2 hibiscus tacos - all so delicious, and then finished off with a large corn kernal soup ($13) - not its name, but it's what I'm remembering the most. Total came to around $35 per person. Authentic and tasty cuisine. I'd love to go back. There is outdoor seating in front, as well as a back patio - which we loved. Because of COVID, I haven't eaten out much, but it was a great experience.

Yelp
Hi my name is Sophie and this was my first restaurant in Toronto. The baby menu is short but everything is yommmi.I ordered beans and Mom and Dad shared with me some maiz from the esquites and that was my favourite thing. Oh! There is one man in the restaurant that loves to play peek a boo, he comes and go everytime hiding from me, mmmm also there was a really cool thing with lights on the top and very hot but they didn't let me play with it. In the entrance there are balls of different colors and beautiful pictures, the wall textures are great and so delicious too.

Yelp
Tasty tacos, all made with natural ingredients, blue corn tortillas, compostable take out container, 10/10 would recommend !

Esther S.

Yelp
This is a beautiful restaurant and the food is fresh and authentic Mexican food. I went with a group of friends and we reserved the back patio, which can hold about 16 people. One of my friends wasn't sure what she wanted to drink, so the mixologist came and talkd to her and made her a custom drink. If you're not familiar with the menue, I recommend the Taco Tasting platter, it was delicious. Also, the servers are great and are more than happy to give recommendations.

Yelp
This is an awesome restaurant. The food is delicious and the service is so nice and friendly. We are looking forward to our next visit and highly recommend it

Yelp
My family and I order their New Year's eve dinner and were blown away by the levels of flavour and freshness and overall deliciousness. It was hard to believe that the veggie Wellington pastry is actually vegan. It's better than most that we have tried made with pure lard or butter! I've already decided that I'm going to order a bucket of the incredible chocolate mousse for my birthday in April. Bravo chef Ivan! You and your fabulous team are working wonders.
