13 Phoenix Bakeries Worth Checking Out

"Self-taught Swiss-French baker Nathas Kraus started La Belle Vie because when he moved to Phoenix, he could not find baguettes that met his standard outside of grocery stores.  Now he bakes baguettes, viénnoiseries (bread and pastries made with yeast and enriched), financiers (almond cakes that traditionally were made in a small rectangular molds to denote a gold bar), and Canelés de Bordeaux (custard cakes)." - Asonta Benetti, Bahar Anooshahr

Totally disappointed…: with all the rave in IG and the croissants is dried up…. The baguette is too chewy and some of the Capucin is dry and it’s not fresh… I was expecting a freshly baked pastry but tasted like a two days old…

If you want the best possible french bread and pastries, this is your place! Freshly hand-made by a true expert, and every bit as delicious as what I had in Paris. Check the website, you can place pre-orders there. Also follow on Facebook for weekly updates.

I love Nathas and his amazing Bread, croissants, kouign amanns', rhinos, damn near everything to be honest. There's really nothing that he's made that I did not thoroughly enjoy. I literally dream of some of the croissants and the twice baked croissant pops are out of this world good. I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on more. I live probably 25-30 min from this location and 15 min from the farmers market and do not care that's it's not close. Because it's really that worth it. The one huge perk about this Particular location is you can get savory items. I'm hoping/praying/crossing my fingers that some day they can potentially make it to the farmers market. But if not I'll eventually make it over there for the ham and cheese croissants. Obviously this person who gave the low review doesn't go on a regular basis because if you are a regular for years and years like myself the low star is not accurate of what Nathas is capable and deserving of. At all. Take it from someone like me who gets up at the crack of dawn to sit and wait 30ish min to an hour prior to the farmers market opening to wait for these delicious treats.

Google
Spotless new bakery with a friendly staff of two baking delicious hit after hit! The baguette and Le K boule are perfect! I couldn't pass up the croissant, cinnamon sugar rhino, apple kouign amann and the almond croissant. Quantities are limited, so order ahead of time on their website. Happy to have a French bakery in the area!

Erik D

Google
The baked goods are delightful. I stopped in for my first time to try some of the pastries and was not disappointed at all. I look forward to stopping in again soon to try the cinnamon sugar rhino :)

Google
We heard about this place so stopped by to check it out...the croissants reminded us of some of the ones we got in Paris. We tried a few different variants and loved them all. Oh my we had a warm ham and cheese croissant and it was delicious. If you are in the area I would check them out.

Google
Voila! The perfect French bakery. Freshly made pastries and baquettes. Fast, efficient service by ordering ahead!

Google
After traveling to France this past June (2022) and experiencing what a REAL croissant was all about I knew I could never eat just any old croissant. Upon my return home I was on a mission to find the best, authentic French bakery in the Phoenix area. I’m beyond ecstatic I found La Belle Vie Bakery! The croissants are perfection and worth every penny! I love placing my order online and picking up my delicious baguette, croissants and other French goodies I choose to treat myself. Always delicious and never disappointed.

Yelp
Simply the best place for you to get French pastries and bread in all of the valley, and really all of Arizona. This bakery is a cute and quaint little spot with offerings that rotate weekly. I recommend placing your order online for pick up to guarantee the items you want otherwise they may run out of their popular items by mid morning! Service is wonderful as the French-Swiss chef and owner Nathas is as sweet as his pastries. Happy to answer any questions and make recommendations if you are overwhelmed by all the tasty looking options. You can really feel his passion, skill, and love for baking in his products! My favorites are anything almond, so I recommend those...but you can't go wrong with anything honestly. They are buttery, flaky, and sweetened to perfection (not too sweet though!). High quality stuff.

Yelp
The most authentic baguette in the area! I pre-order a couple of baguettes and assorted pastries for Saturday pickup, usually weekly. It's a bonus to be served from the baker, Nathas. I used to laugh at movie scenes of the French carrying baguettes while walking down the boulevard or on bicycles until I saw it w my own eyes in France... now I'm doing the same! Life is too short to eat bread with more than four ingredients (French Bread Law).

Yelp
So I live a full 30 minutes away from La Belle Vie and 5 min away from another very well known French bakery in Central Phoenix, and I will make the drive to Scottsdale for Nathas's gems any day that I can do it! Nathas, the owner, is SO passionate about his craft and you see it in everything he makes. He loves his customers and has such a fun sense of humor as well! The bakery is now open Tuesdays through Saturdays and pre-orders are taken for Saturday pickups, for those of us that are organized! My favorites include butter croissants (perfectly crispy and flaky outside and soft inside), almond croissants (dipped in sugar rum syrup and twice baked), chocolate almond croissants (same process as above), caneles (baked with a dark, caramelized crunchy crust and soft, almost gooey middle: they're extraordinary), baguettes (2 types, depending on the kind of crust you want), filled "rhino" croissants with seasonal flavors (our favorite is lemon basil). The list just goes on, but honestly, everything in this shop delectable! You can't go wrong! The space is bright and clean. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. If you're lucky, Nathas will be in the day you visit! Besides his viennoiserie, the bakery also offers many imported German pantry staples that everyone should browse and try!

Yelp
Ridiculously good French pastries, bread, croissants etc...hidden jem And stop by every week to grab a few items. FYI only open for walk in on Saturday but you can pre order to pick up Saturdays

Yelp
I've always been "ho hum" on croissants, having lived most of my life in the Southwest. That changed on a trip to France, where I experienced a "real" French croissant for the first time. I suddenly learned what all of the fuss was about, and I miss those croissants dearly. One bite into a La Belle Vie Bakery's chocolate croissant took me right back to France. These are the real deal! They are light, airy, and buttery with the perfect amount of dark, slightly bitter, chocolate. Literally, heaven on earth. La Belle Vie Bakery will be a regular stop from now on.

Yelp
Holy cow if you are looking for something amazing, this place has many options. They make high quality French pastries and breads by order. We tried a few items and were completely blown away by the fantastic textures and flavors. The service is top notch and it's a clean and simple little shop.

Yelp
Once I entered this bakery, I could smell the freshly baked goods. No line and the displays are so neat and clean. I usually got a few items at a time, which is really hard to decide because they all look yummy. Bugnons almond is so delicious. Deliciously moist almond paste in the puff pastry is the best combo. I need more! It is so addictive. I like Kouign Amann wild blueberry more than the apricot one. I am curious to try other fruits in Kouign Amann.

Yelp
On par with top bakeries in NYC and Paris, truly excellent pastries. Cute little shop, really welcoming and good customer service, loved everything about this bakery.

Yelp
This is the best bakery we've ever been to, thoughtful in ingredients and taking the time to do everything to make this a wonderful experience for you

Yelp
The finest French bread in the Phoenix metro area. There is no competition. Made by hand with extraordinary care.
google avatar

Yelp
Let me start by saying I've been to France multiple times, and I've also been to a fair share of French bakeries. I can confidently say these are some of the best baked goods in Arizona. The owner is from France and Switzerland so you know it's the real deal. The almond croissants might be the best I've ever had, I'm not ashamed to admit I ate the whole thing. It's just a shame they're only open on Saturdays, but you can preorder during the week!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
This is a very authentic French bakery which makes incredible baguettes and pastries. It is a small operation so you can do the ordering online Tuesday until they sell out with pickup at the Gilbert Farmers market or Scottsdale location on the weekend. I've been looking for this quality of baked goods for a long time and I'm thrilled I've found it. Honestly, I'm thankful it's a once a week pickup or my waistline would be in trouble!

Upon my return home I was on a mission to find the best, authentic French bakery in the Phoenix area. I'm beyond ecstatic I found La Belle Vie Bakery! The croissants are perfection! Flaky, buttery and just the right amount of moist in the middle. I can never eat a soggy croissant again after experiencing La Belle Vie's perfect croissants!! I place my order online and pick up my delicious baguette, croissants and other French goodies I choose to treat myself to and drive almost 30 minutes (one way) to pick them up. THAT'S how delicious they are!!

Yelp
This is the best Bakery in town. The owner/ chef is creative, kind, and authentic. He makes the best pastries you'll ever have in Arizona. You will think you have stumbled across an authentic bakery in France! I don't usually give 5 stars but the authenticity the chef has created with his attention to detail and perfection of mastering the art of baking truly deserves it. Everything is amazing, my favorite and a must try is the Kouign-amann!!

Nora O.

Yelp
Here visiting and we were craving some real pastries. I found this place close to my boyfriend's house and I must say these are the best pastries I've had outside of Europe. I was in Europe last in September and the pain au chocolat at this bakery was better than some of the ones I had in Europe. I don't know if I've ever had a pastry so light and flaky. Highly recommend this bakery & next time I'm back in Phoenix I'll defo be back!!

Yelp
Authentic French baked goods, you can tell the technique is great and nothing is overly sweet. It's only open to the public on Saturday so gotta pre-order online on Tuesday and pick stuff up within a limited amount of time, go in and get out since it's purely a boulangerie/pâtisserie rather than some sit down place like a cafe. I work every other weekend so I look forward to getting to treat myself to their pastries so while the process is a bit of a hassle, I say try it if you'll in the area Saturday morning.

Kristen W.

Yelp
You absolutely must stop at La Belle Vie when you're in Scottsdale. Leaving without tasting their bread and pastries will leave your soul longing for something... And leaving *after* tasting their bread and pastries will leave your taste buds longing for your next trip to Scottsdale :) Amazing European style breads with perfectly crispy crusts and chewy, savory crumb. Flaky, buttery pastries with sweet or savory fillings. Whimsical and fun holiday treats. What's not to love!?

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous. This bakery is in walking distance from our house (danger danger!) and we've done the Saturday pick up a couple of times. Most recently, we picked up an assortment of pastries ahead of hosting Mother's Day brunch for our moms. We pre-ordered the chocolate scones, almond croissants, chocolate almond croissant pop, and mini's strawberries (strawberry filled brioche). Plus picked up some mini tarts (strawberry & chocolate) and a raspberry rose rhino brioche at the storefront. The moms raved about how delicious everything was. Pre-order & pick up is a breeze. Highly recommend! See you on Saturdays :)

J C.

Yelp
Most amazing pastries I have ever had! We live walking distance and are so excited they are open Tuesday-Saturday now! This place has never sold me anything I didn't love! I don't like pastries anywhere else now!

Yelp
Quality bread and goodies made with love and integrity. The crust on the bread is crisp and flaky. The treats are the reason I have to swim laps everyday! My boys love the cinnamon options each week and we all love trying new items. We leave with a bag full each week and what we can't eat that weekend we freeze and pull out through the week. Very professional, clean, and organized bakery. Great job La Belle Vie!
google avatar

Ivana T.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite bakeries! I live near Surprise but whenever I'm craving a croissant or anything from here, it's definitely worth the drive.
google avatar

Yelp
If you want a delicious French bakery try La Belle Vie. They started at the Gilbert farmer's market. The owner is from France and has a way of making you feel like you're old friends. He takes his knowledge of French baking and will put twists on it. My favorite time of year is October because he will make delicious Pumpkin options! If you've never had a canneli please try one, forgive my poor spelling of that!

Yelp
I discovered this bakery at a farmers market. So many different breads and pastries that it's like going to a French bakery in Paris. It's family owned and run and you can't ask for a more tasty, made from the heart treat.

Jeremy P.

Yelp
La Belle Vie has been an oasis in the desert of French bakeries. We've been enjoying the pastries since they were only available at the Gilbert Farmer's market. Now, we will make the trek to Scottsdale. Everything has been on par with the best bakeries in Paris or New York, but here the service is delightful. I've recommended La Belle Vie to all my foodie visitors from out of town, guaranteeing that they'll be blown away. They all are. I'm thrilled there's an audience for this quality in Phoenix, as a good French bakery has been the town's major shortcoming for years. The bread requires a sophisticated palate, but it's among the best in the country. The desert pastries are more accessible. My children love both. We love the weekly specialty pastries, but wish the savory croissants were available not on preorder and in greater quantity, as we always forget to preorder. Highly recommended. My top pick in Phoenix for any food lover.

Kaila B.

Yelp
Amazing little shop with the best croissants in AZ! Lovely atmosphere very friendly and welcoming. Will return in the future!

Carly W.

Yelp
Perfection can't quite describe this place. Impeccable pastries, amazing selections of French shelf stables, and truly great customer service. This will be my weekend breakfast spot for my morning Saturday walk.
google avatar

Erin S.

Yelp
I started going to this bakery a couple months ago. I can't begin to tell you how delicious these pastries are. My favorites are the apricot kouign amann, croissants, and pain au chocolat. Not to say that everything else isn't amazing but these are my go to goodies!! The staff is so welcoming and friendly. If i could give this place 6 stars i would!!
google avatar

Charlie O.

Yelp
What an amazingly authentic French bakery. Ordered some chocolate croissants and these almond cookies that were surreal. Give it a try. You won't regret it.

Michael R.

Yelp
The best bakery in the Phoenix area. Longtime fans from the market and fans of the storefront. Get the chocolate croissants and the brown sugar bugnons (when they have them)!

Al S.

Yelp
This is hands down the best quality that you'll find in the valley. A hidden gem that does not cease to amaze me with the their amazing menu. Thank you for putting a smile on our faces!

Yelp
I have read a lot about this bakery and the 5-star reviews made me curious. I thought they were only available at farmers market then I discovered they opened a store in our neighborhood! We went in today and bought some from their delightful displays. We couldn't eat everything in one sitting so we first had the almond croissant and the lemon basil croissant. Oh my goodness! What a tickle to the palate! They're soooo good!!! They're not your run-of-the-mill kind. They know how to craft croissants indeed. I have 3 more pastries to try and I have a feeling they will be consumed before the end of today. We probably will be back tomorrow. Please check it out!

Sarah T.

Yelp
My favorite French bakery! Every time I go to Paris and then come back I miss it more and more. A little solace is ordering from La Belle Vie! Flakey, buttery and delicious. And the people are so nice. Try it! You'll like it! I promise. You may even have to talk yourself out of ordering every single day they're open because your waist can't take it. Phoenix is not a walkable town you know. Thank you, Nathan for putting your passion into bringing delicious French pastries to Phoenix!!

Megan P.

Yelp
I love this place! I recently moved to another state and am so upset I haven't been able to find a bakery as good as La Belle. I have loved everything I have ever tried. Although I love it all, my favorites are the Kouign Amann and Canales de Bordeaux. If you go, you absolutely have to try these. The croissants are amazing as well...and anything else he makes. Also the owner is so kind and says hi to everyone.

Susan B.

Yelp
Actually better than the pain au chocolate I ate while in Paris...and I loved, loved, loved those. We love Nathas and his band of merry bakers. We now have a French Bakery I don't have to fly to get there. Love La Belle Vie too much!

Bree B.

Yelp
Wonderful local bakery that brings a little taste of France to Scottsdale. Delicious everything, but my favorite is the baguette and plain croissant.

Ernesto G.

Yelp
I've been here several tomes now and this bakery never disappoints. Its obvious they have put a lot of work and effort into their recipes. If you're looking for an authentic french bakery I really recommend this location!

Cynthia B.

Yelp
We usually go to the Gilbert Farmer's Market, but we have made a few trips to the store because it's just so good and it's worth the drive. Everything we have ever tried has been delicious and you can't go wrong. Our defaults are chocolate and almond croissants but the rotating treats never disappoint and make it fun each week to see what's being offered. This is a stop you have to make!

Lupita Z.

Yelp
One of the absolute best bakeries in the Phoenix Metro area. My daughter is a pastry chef and she and I both love La Belle Vie! We've been hooked on their pastries since we found them at the farmer's market. Great quality and great taste!

Nadine E.

Yelp
Ok, it's about time that there is an amazing French bakery in South Scottsdale. Even better, it's located a few doors down from the gym! All their pastries are great, but my favorites are the chocolate croissant and the French bread. They are the just like I remember them tasting when my father took me to France! I highly recommend getting your goodies from this cute little bakery!

Monica S.

Yelp
What an amazing find!! It's a great idea to pre-order because you can bypass the very long line! The owner is amazing. Always greets me and asks if I need to add to my order. The classic baguette is out of this world. The Owner suggested how to warm up. I send it for dinner and Added butter and honey. OMG!!! The most delicious bread. My husband is a bread and wine guy. He begged me to order more baguettes. Also ordered the almond croissants for a brunch I hosted. My non-carb friends devoured them! They are so light and flavorful. They were a hit!! I love this bakery. They are simply the BEST!!

Michele Hayes H.

Yelp
Love the pastries. Found them and realized they offered so many great products without having to drive miles into Phoenix!!!

Brady K.

Yelp
My wife and I have travelled the world in search of excellent croissants. Of course this means Paris, but also the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia (where some F1 scientists built a climate controlled room to perfect their bakes), a whole in the wall in London known for their pastries, and some of the finest bakeries in New York. Imagine our surprise when we stumbled into our favorite croissants in... Arizona?! La Belle Vie exemplifies the art of pastry: the precision required to make a delicious bake, combined with the heart of an artist willing to try new things, push the envelope and see what new levels of deliciousness are possible. We're lucky to have found this gem--having moved to Arizona during the pandemic, Nathas' bakes were a highlight of our weeks and an opportunity to explore when the world was otherwise closed. This place cannot be missed!

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. I drive in about an hour one way just to pick up the goodies. I'm not much of a plain bread person but when it comes to sweet pastries & filled croissants, this is the place. The kouign amann is absolutely delicious and they are so hard to find around greater Phoenix (at least true kouign amanns) I cut it into wedges, wrap and freeze them in individual slices. Then when I need my "fix", I simply take out of the freezer, thaw a bit then put it in the air fryer sitting on a small piece of parchment or pan liner. It gets all caramelly and has that just baked crunch to it. The almond macaroons are also a favorite. I also freeze them and warm up in the air fryer then let it cool again to get that just baked goodness. Nathas, we missed you while you were in France this summer. Glad you're back and love the new French items sold in the store that you brought back with you.

Joyce G.

Yelp
We were so lucky to find this bakery at the Gilbert Farmer's Market. His actual shop is in Scottsdale. This is a very authentic French/Swiss bakery. We have tried many bakeries in the Phoenix Metro Area that were such disappointments! His croissants are to die for! The only place we have had croissants almost this good were on a cruise ship! His pastries fill a niche because no other bakery has this kind of pastry and what you do get in other bake shops and supermarkets doesn't come anywhere near what you find here. This is not your cup cake or even layer cake kind of bakery. That you can get anywhere or you can bake them at home. This is refined pastry done with skill. We especially love his fruit and chocolate filled pastries and when he has filled croissants. If you want the ordinary ho hum kind of stuff, you can go anywhere. But those who know excellent croissants and like them light and flaky and buttery, this is where you need to go. We drive to the Gilbert Farmer's Market from close to the Florence border so we try to limit ourselves to twice a month due to the high price of gas. It is the highlight of our twice a month Saturdays.
