"This casual spot in Humboldt Park has birria that we can only describe as transcendent. While we ate it, time stopped and the restaurant dissolved around us like pixels in The Matrix and nothing existed besides the truth of braised meat and flavorful red consomé. Birria is (obviously) the specialty, but the menu also includes incredibly pliable handmade tortillas, delicious quesabirria, fajitas, chilaquiles, and a short beer list. Plus, it’s decorated with a fun mural that will help cheer you up even after your food is gone." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru
"Birria When we ate the birria at this casual Mexican restaurant in Humboldt Park, time stopped and nothing existed besides the truth of braised meat and flavorful red consomé. It’s served with some incredibly pliable handmade tortillas that stand up to the juicy goat without disintegrating—a fact that we put to the test with the delicious quesabirria, too." - adrian kane
"When we ate the birria at this casual Mexican spot in Humboldt Park the restaurant dissolved around us like pixels in The Matrix and nothing existed besides the truth of braised meat and flavorful red consomé. While birria is the specialty, the menu also includes fantastic chilaquiles, possibly the best rice and fried beans in Chicago, and quesabirria made from handmade tortillas that can withstand repeated broth dunkings without disintegrating. There’s a short beer menu, and there are always some free tables for a walk-in group dinner. Plus, it’s decorated with a large pop art mural that’s colorful enough to pull us back into reality—though we’re not holding that against it." - adrian kane
"This casual Mexican spot in Humboldt Park specializes in birria, and it’s incredible. The braised meat comes with a flavorful red consomé, and some incredibly pliable handmade tortillas. And we especially appreciate these tortillas when used to build the delicious quesabirria. Each taco has a wonderful balance of juicy goat and cheese, and the tortillas can withstand repeated dunkings in the broth without disintegrating. And while it has nothing to do with the food, we also really appreciate their giant parking lot." - adrian kane, veda kilaru, john ringor, jessica rome
"This casual Mexican spot in Humboldt Park has a number of things that make it ideal for a last-minute group dinner. Obviously, its appearance on this guide means it’s easy to get a table. Plus, this place has a large parking lot, so no one will have to decipher the tax code-level complicated that are Chicago’s street signs. Most importantly, La Birrieria has incredible birria. Order a couple “plato grandes” for the table to share - it’s served with incredibly pliable handmade tortillas that stand up to the juicy meat without disintegrating. The menu also includes things like fajitas, chilaquiles, and a short beer list." - adrian kane
