This Hidden Gem Pupuseria Is Bringing Fresh Food to an Atlanta Food Desert | Eater Atlanta

"A hidden gem bringing fresh food to an Atlanta food desert, this pupuseria-market now in the former D&D Barbeque & Ribs space makes pupusas from scratch daily (with vegan and vegetarian options) and, through a partnership with Invest Atlanta, stocks Georgia-grown produce, eggs, and pantry items. I take home hot and frozen pupusas—$8 each from the take-out window or as a $12 plate with salsa and curtido (a fermented cabbage relish), plus coffee, refrescos, and juices; frozen two-packs are $14 with fillings like roast chicken and cheese, Caribe United Farm chorizo and cheese, and a breakfast option with bacon, egg, and cheese—and my kitchen fills with the smell of corn, a comfort that takes me back to stuffed parathas with chai. The sweet plantain and beans pupusa is a standout; I top the chorizo and cheese with a fried egg, and the chicken travels perfectly for a walk—quintessential street food that’s quick, filling, and utterly delicious. Outdoors, bright blue umbrellas shade picnic tables, and inside the small market offers fresh and organic fruit, vegetables, seasonings, and other locally made snacks; it’s the only local pupuseria with a market. “Food is the foundation of a strong community,” co-owner Ken Katz says, and the move from the MET in Adair Park to 1975 Sylvan Road SW in Sylvan Hills feels destined—La Bodega is a small but mighty dent in feeding the neighborhood, with hours Tue–Fri 8 a.m.–2 p.m. and Sat 9 a.m.–2 p.m., plus appearances at Freedom Farmers Market, Piedmont Park Green Market, and Grant Park Farmers Market." - Henna Bakshi

The pupusas were very good they have different flavors chicken, chorizo, beans and cheese, bacon egg cheese. And the coffee cafe con leche was really good!

I tried the beans and cheese, the chicken and cheese and the plantain and beans and the only one I finished was the beans and cheese. I personally didn’t like the taste of the other two. Also, they were cold once I received them. The atmosphere was cool for a warm day since they don’t have any inside seating or outdoor heaters. There was a fun market so it was cool to see there were events happening. The parking is small but they do offer parking at a small strip mall close by. They don’t have restrooms so you have to go use the gas station restroom across the street.

I recently tried La Brogea and the pupusas themselves were delicious — great flavor, cooked well, and clearly made with care. That said, they were on the smaller side, and my total for four pupusas with no drink or sides came to about $38. For this area, that price point feels a bit high, especially considering the portion size and that it was bean and cheese pupusas no meat . I know it’s expensive everywhere and had 4 pupusas and only one side of salsa . So that let’s me know they don’t consider 4 pupusas a order for two people. I think the restaurant could really shine with the lunch crowd if they offered more lunch specials or more combo options. The food is good, and I’m glad this place is here — the community needs more spots like this. But because of the cost and smaller portions, it won’t be a regular stop for me. It’s more of a “special occasion” place where I’d order lightly if I just wanted a light lunch and to not get full. Overall, tasty food and friendly vibes, but the pricing and portion size may limit how often I visit

Fresh papusas and excellent coffee. Salvadorian coffee is some of the best you can get. I love this little gem on the southside and thank the family who owns it for bringing culture and flavor to an often overlooked area.

I’m so so happy they’ve opened a new location. Their cafe con leche is the best in town. The pupusa’s are rich and delicious. We had the classic beans and cheese, the chorizo, the chicken and we had the breakfast (bacon and eggs). All were fantastic. I was extremely pleasantly surprised by the breakfast pupusa and how flavorful it is. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for authentic pupusas and overall great food.

I am rooting for Bodega and am so glad to have them in our Sylvan Hills neighborhood. They have delicious pupusas and coffee, and completed a huge upgrade to the facility with the new opening. That being said, it’s on the pricey end for not a ton of food. The pupusas are delicious but small, and they cost $8 apiece. For two adults to eat lunch, I purchased 3 pupusas to share and 2 lattes. With a tip, it was $40 and we were still hungry afterwards. While I want the workers to receive a quality wage, the amount of food received compared to the cost of entry, it just isn’t currently the value I’m hoping for. I’m concerned this potential gem won’t be a regular stop for myself and my neighbors if the cost of a full belly isn’t more attainable. Hoping for some combos, sides, or lunch specials to make this a bit more attainable for the neighborhood. Hoping this review is productive and that Bodega will be a staple in our community long term.

It was my first time and since I can’t have chicken or dairy; I tried their Mother Earth and Plant Base options! There was basically beans, a veggie mix, and sweet plantains in the Mother Earth & Veggie mix, beans, and mushrooms in the Plant Base. I enjoyed the Mother Earth slightly more. I loved that it was plant based. I liked the sauces they had. NOT the most flavorful but I believe that it was authentic to how it’s made. I’m more of a flavor gal! Still really good for plant based. I loved the drink the most! That was my first time having one.
