Yelp
What an awesome location. From the outside your like "that's it" but once the password is said and the door opens what a cool little speakeasy. A must try if your around the area or take a drive to try it out.
Let's start with the beer. Started with my personal beer of choice. A Hazy IPA HAZLITT. HAZLITT is a New England style IPA, aka Hazy IPA, is a smooth, non-bitter ale with robust hop aroma and hints of guava, grapefruit, mango and tropical fruit.
Then I moved on to something a little lighter. The WHITTIER ICE CREAM ALE which is a CREAM ALE.
The Whittier Ice Cream ale is silky, sweet, and packed with flavor. This beer bridges the gap between a lager and an ale. Beers were very good but out of these two I would stick with the HAZLITT.
Now let's talk about the food. We didn't get a meal, we just shared a bunch of appetizers. A good way to try a little bit of everything.
GUACAMOLE CON CHICHARRÓN - Ripe Hass avocado, charred serrano, red onion, tomato, freshly squeezed lime juice, diced
queso panela, topped with roasted pepitas, accompanied with pork chicharron. Guacamole was amazing but wish it was the Chicharron with mean on it not the kind that's just the skin like you buy in a bag at the market.
BODEGA FRIES - Diced grilled U.S.D.A prime flat iron steak, crispy bistro fries, premium monterey jack cheese, mayocoba refried beans, pico de gallo, topped with pickled jalapenos. These were great. Cooked perfectly and meat was very tender and flavorful.
EL REY SHRIMP - El Rey beer battered shrimp tossed in chipotle aioli on a bed of Napa cabbage, garnished with fresh Chile Fresno. Side of ginger scallion salsa. These were another hit. Finished them and was left wanting more.
CHILE MORITA WINGS - Mary's Free Range Chicken Wings crisped to perfection and flavored with chile morita and scallions. Wings were good. It reminded me of mole which was a good thing. Great flavor and just the right amount of heat. A must try.
Chips and salsa - can you really go wrong with these. House made chips with a house made salsa. Taste like it was a fire roasted salsa. Good little starter to share while having a beer and good conversation.
Great place, good food and great beer. If you go on a weekend I would suggest a reservation because it will be crowded. Stay hungry my friends.
