WARNING: Discriminatory service. The wine selection was very nice but the service made me feel unwelcome for no reason. Better to just go to a grocery store.
Full story:
I came in 45 min before closing. The guy working told me they were closed. Their hours say 9pm closing time so I asked why. He said it’s because it’s not very busy (there were two other people in the bar) and I could get a bottle of wine for takeaway.
As he’s recommending a wine, a group of 3 older Europeans walk in. I asked if he was still going to close early and he said “probably not” and then seated me.
… Why is a party of one any less deserving of being served than a party of 3? Was it the party size or the age? Or (I hope not) the non-whiteness?
I had two glasses of wine and tried to enjoy my evening, but it was hard to feel comfortable when the initial welcome felt very discriminatory. I also noticed he offered water to the now two other parties seated but not to me. The service was otherwise fine enough; he offered an off menu red blend he had opened for another “by the glass option”.
I don’t like to patronize places where I feel like a second-class citizen, so I would not return here or recommend this place to any friends, especially if you are dining by yourself or are maybe young or not white.
