La Bonne Étape

"The table at this restored farmhouse is laid with bread, fougasse, olives and olive oil, plus a host of colourful sun-ripened tomatoes – just some of the typical Provençal fare served in this restaurant where thyme, savory and lavender add to the fragrant scents of southern France. Chef Jany Gleize has been serving classic, gourmet Provençal cuisine which is full of flavour for almost half a century. With dishes such as cep mushrooms in ravioli or a flan, duck foie gras and mallard pie, hare “à la royale” and lamb from Sisteron on the menu, Provençal writer Jean Giono would have appreciated the strong and distinctive flavours of this rich cuisine. Guests come from far and wide to taste this chef’s “pieds et paquets” (tripe and trotters), served in a spicy tomato sauce which brings out the full flavours of the ingredients. A few spacious guestrooms decorated with period furnishings are also available." - Michelin Inspector

We spent a night here whilst on a roadtrip driving the Route Napoléon from Grenoble to Cannes. The hotel is very conveniently located just off the main road (but without any road noise) and oozes charm and character. We had a beautiful room facing the garden. It was spacious and comfortable, and tastefully decorated. The furnishings including the bed were all very comfortable and we slept extremely well. Service was impeccable and attentive, the lady at reception was very friendly and went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Plenty of small details made this a classy experience, like the handwritten card from the owner and the sweets and tea left in the room in the evening. I had a lovely dip in the gorgeous pool and soaked up the autumn sunshine on one of the comfortable loungers. I also got a nice improvised tour of the interesting building by one of the staff. A perfect halt for anyone driving the Route Napoléon in a classic car as it offers safe off-street parking that is locked by code after 22.00. A small suggestion for improvement: the breakfast could be improved to make it better value at 27 euros per person, such as offering fresh orange juice and perhaps poached eggs. This is a detail, overall a delightful stay and thanks again to the wonderful staff and in particular the lady at reception.

We have just returned from 2 nights here. Rather a nice spot to be. Good staff, nice rooms, great grounds and pool. 1* dining isn’t really our thing, so the Bistro was great. All in all a v. Nice stay. The patron even came to see ll the guests were looked after at breakfast. Fine place.

We just returned from a three night stay at Le Bonne Etape and is was a most wonderful experience! Both restaurants provided five star cuisine, service and ambience. The special 60th anniversary 7 course meal in the Main dining room will be remembered as a special night for us! Our guest room provided a beautiful balcony overlooking the herb garden and the outdoor pool and landscaped pathways brought a sense of great relaxation. A most wonderful stop in Haute Provence that no one should miss.

A beautiful hotel, with attentive yet discreet staff, wonderful surroundings, beautiful decor, attention to detail throughout the stay, a lovely pool area and delightful herb garden, an excellent breakfast, and even a little gift on departure including an extreme thoughtful bottle of water for my onwards journey. I loved everything about this wonderful little hotel in such a beautiful part of the world.

Really lovely place. Understated luxury in a gorgeous setting. Staff were amazing and the restaurant served some of the best food I’ve eaten regardless of Michelin distinction.

We stayed here for a night. Lovely hotel with a Michelin star restaurant and a bistrot. Service was friendly and warm. We only ate in the bistrot and the food is delicious. Next time might try the main restaurant. The only downside is that the hotel restaurant is not available for late lunch or snacks, not even the surrounding area of the hotel. We ended up driving to the next village to hunt for late lunch.

One night and one dinner at the one star restaurant: 1. The hotel part is 5/5 very good and the room much better than I anticipated. Was a good mix of old and more new/modern. 2. The one star restaurant was a real disappointment. We did various 1 & 2 star restaurant in our trip and this one was really not at the level. There is a real feel of « has been »… the food was of course ok but very far from a one ⭐️. Also was in June a very empty dinning room…. That sait staff and people where very friendly.
