San Diego’s Best Brunch Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"Forget American-style staples and try “Frunch” instead at neighborhood bistro La Bonne Table. The menu is graced with Gallic favorites, including a béchamel-topped croque madame, salad with lardons and poached egg, a chive and chèvre omelet, plus lighter versions of dishes found during dinner service — think steak frites and duck confit. Brunch is served every Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m." - Roxana Becerril

Where to Dine Solo in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"For someone eating alone, this tiny gem of a French restaurant in Hillcrest might just feel like the hug you didn’t know you needed. Friendly staff, well-executed French standards, and a petite dining room scaled for intimacy (and eavesdropping, shh) all give this place its warm, welcoming aura."

Easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had in San Diego. First off, the service was impeccable. Great recommendations by our server and attentive service from the entire staff as far as making sure that our water or iced teas or wines were topped off. The pate was delicious, but the snails were out of this world great. I would eat 47,000 of those escargots. The pork chop may have been the best pork chop that I’ve ever eaten in a restaurant in the last 20 years. The duck was really good, but definitely to me was second to the pork chop. The french fries were delicious as were the potatoes au gratin. Lastly, the crème brûlée was on point. But if you go, you have to get the escargot. If not, I will show up at your table and order it and eat it in front of you.

It was my first real french cuisine experience. They only have a few tables, so the vibe feels so cozy. Good for a special occasion, and their food is phenomenal. I ordered pork chop by their recommendation, and we thought pork chop would be weird in a french restaurant. But their pork chop was the best pork chop I have ever had in my life. The mushroom sauce is insanely flavorful. Escargot was very good and buttery, and their duck dish was also great. Also have their creme brûlée!

I enjoyed a wonderful early dinner here at La Bonne Table during a business trip. The easily accessible restaurant reminded me of home cooking and I waxed nostalgic for the quaint house restaurant combination of Jean's in Colton, CA. The elements for the nostalgia were all present: well made classic recipes, friendly and accommodating service, and a clean and quaint ambiance. The weather and outdoor seating made La Bonne Table a better dining option. Also, Jean's closed when Jean passed away in his 80s. A true American immigrant success story. PROS: The deliciously decadent homestyle portions of homemade pate, tart cornichons, and sour mustard smeared across freshly warmed crusty baguette. The piping hot cassoulet with duck confit, talousse sausage, garlic sausage, and thick cut bacon with white beans filled me with beautiful memories from my 20s at Jean's and became a part of small Francophile gastronomic community in the Inland Empire. It tasted like home. Everything homemade and tasty. Dining next to me were old friends celebrating their birthdays, a family enjoying a reunion dinner, a couple on a date, and friends taking a meal on the terrace. The friendly and attentive servers worked as a team to help me feel welcomed in their home. The prices were extremely reasonable. I highly recommend. CONS: The only con is the local neighborhood being so close to the restaurant. It worked great until some random car alarm disrupted the quiet of the sonic landscape for over 15 to 20 minutes. People came in soliciiting or something. The restaurant staff did all they could to accommodate. ⚜️💚⚜️

If you’re in the mood for a cozy spot, this French restaurant is a winner! The duck confit is crispy and tender, the mussels are incredible, and the dessert—just perfect. Plus, the service is super friendly and makes you feel like family. Definitely worth a visit!

You need a reservation. We were seated promptly and given a choice of tables. Dinner was delicious and the service was excellent.

Amazing restaurant! I had the best french onion soup and pork chop here! Took my girlfriend on a date for her birthday and the staff really made the night so wonderful (offered free bread and port wine for dessert). Small things like this really mean a lot - especially on top of such a wonderful meal

Google
I’m shocked that this place has a 4.8 star rating. This is my first time at a mediocre 4.8 star restaurant. Makes me wonder if the owner has found a way to fix the reviews. I ordered the escargot, the duck, and the crème brûlée. The escargot was tiny, smallest I’ve ever had. Each snail was less than a bite. So it wasn’t satisfying at all. The puff pastry covering each snail was novel, but didn’t compensate for the teeny size. The duck was dry and the mustard sauce accompanying it was bland. The duck skin was nicely crisp (the highlight of the dish) but the brussel sprouts were bland and uninteresting. The crème brûlée was the best part of the meal. The berries were sweet and pleasant. The top of the brûlée was crisp. But the custard wasn’t rich. It almost tasted like a “lite” dessert although I’m sure it wasn’t. The service was excellent as one might expect at a $100+ restaurant. The dining room was almost as small as the escargot. 10 small tables were jammed in the tiny space. The decor was extremely uninteresting. Small black and white photos in boring frames unapologetically plastered the walls. I tried finding something interesting to look at, with no luck. I will not be back. There are too many other good restaurants in San Diego to waste one’s time and money here.

Google
We came here for San Diego Restaurant Week, and was glad we got to try a new place that was decent! The food was good. The steak was cooked perfectly. The duck confit was tender. The Crepes Suzette was interesting at first but ended up liking it. It's a tiny restaurant with only 20 seats inside. It's a very intimate setting. We didn't get to try too much of the wine because we went on a Monday and had work the next day. Maybe next time!

Yelp
We had dinner here last night for our last night here in Hillcrest. We started with the escargot, and it was absolutely delicious. So good, we ordered the French baguette, to sop up the remaining warm butter and garlic. The next course, we shared the salad and it was light and perfectly dressed. I ordered the grilled pork chop with scalloped potatoes and it tasted better than I imagined possible. Also the rainbow trout with grilled asparagus, was prepared to perfection. For dessert we shared the chocolate mousse. Rich Belgium chocolate and then it was time to walk back to the hotel. Everything from start to finish was a wonderful dining experience.

Yelp
Brought my girlfriend here in order to celebrate Valentine's Day (though it wasn't exactly on Valentine's Day, neither her nor I are fans of pre-set menus). It's a very small, but intimate restaurant with only a handful of tables. I would definitely recommend making reservations ahead of time. The intimate vibes are definitely heightened by the dim lighting, which as perfect for a Valentine's Day dinner. Overall the waitstaff was attentive but service was on the slower slide. With such a restricted table count one would hope that they would be a little more prompt getting food out. I didn't mind too much since I had the most wonderful company, but with the pace of service we were there for quite a while. It was a celebration so cocktails were in order. My girlfriend got a Kir Royale and I opted for The Saint. Both cocktails subscribed to the less is more philosophy of mixology and were thoroughly enjoyed. No smokes in mirrors needed, just crisp, refreshing and deliciously clean flavors. Now for the food. 1.) We decided on Escargot as our appetizer and they offered very balanced yet rich, garlicky, buttery flavors with some nice texture contrast provided by the puff pastry. This was definitely a 4/5 dish for me. Though it was delicious we did find ourselves wishing for a little more crisp coming from the pastry. 2.) I chose the Confit de Canard for my main. It was my favorite dish of the evening. The duck was perfectly cooked and full of that rich flavor one expects. The brussel sprouts were nicely cooked and made for a fine side dish. I did find that the mustard cream sauce its served with was unnecessary and in my opinion created a sort of disconnect in the dish. I think I would've preferred something a little more subtle to pair with duck so that it would supplement the dish. Instead I felt like the flavors were competing, which may be a positive to some, but I found I could've gone without it. 3.) My girlfriend went with the Cote de Porc and did not enjoy her dish as much as the rest of our meal. I tasted a bit of it and it seemed like the pork got a bit lost between the mushroom cream sauce and the potato gratin. The gratin itself was my favorite component from her dish. All in all we were treated to a good dinner here at La Bonne Table. It's a relatively small table and small restaurant so its something I'd be open to trying in another occasion, for another celebration, but it's not a place I think I would come to with a higher frequency. Overall it was a 4/5 dining experience.

Yelp
My wife chose this French restaurant, it's very small inside but cozy. Had dinner here with my Family, not hard to find the restaurant but it's hard to find a parking spot. We had our Appetizer, main course , and dessert but I'm just gonna review what we had for our main entree since my wife already did a full review of what we had here. So I had the Cassoulet, I always enjoyed this dish because it has Variety of meats on it, taste-wise it's the same as the other Cassoulets I had in French restaurants we've been to, just like ordering this because of the Duck, Sausage and Pork Belly. My Son had a Pork Chop and it's a big one, it has a delicious mushroom sauce. My wife had the Duck Confit, the duck has a nice crispy skin and juicy inside, with delicious creamy sauce. Nice French restaurants to come back to.

Yelp
What a lively little french bistro! Yes it's pricey but the ambiance is so cozy and romantic and the service is absolutely top notch! The menu is quite limited and I wish they had a chicks. dish but they prepare their menu items very well and portions are quite generous. We ordered the endive salad to share. This was a fresh and well dressed salad. For our main courses we ordered the steak frites and the mussels. We probably could have shared just one entree. The steak was perfectly cooked, the sauce was to die for and the fries were perfectly crisp and well seasoned. I had asparagus instead of fries and they were delicious as well. The mussels came in a delicious broth and there were plenty of fries to share. Hubby could not finish the mussels. He probably left at least ten mussels in the bowl. If you are looking for a romantic evening this is the place!!

Yelp
Visited this adorable little restaurant with the sweetest staff on a slow Sunday afternoon for lunch. The restaurant itself is so beautiful decorated and designed. The outdoor patio offers comfortable seating with a nice view of the buzzing community surrounding it. And the food!! Incredibly fresh, plenty of delicious menu options and each that I've tried has really knocked it out of the park. I would definitely recommend for a hidden gem lunch visit. I'll have to come back to try their dinner experience!

Yelp
We always take turns to choose which restaurant to dine at and it was my Son's turn and he chose to dine at this French Restaurant called "THE BONNE TABLE". There wasn't that much space inside, pretty small with an extra outdoor seating. All of the tables were full, so my first impression was that it must be good, and it was actually pretty good. Ordered the following: *PORK CHOP *CASSOULET *CONFIT DUCK *PATE MAISON *DAISY COCKTAIL *DESSERTS , CREME BRULEE & MOUSSE. We had our complimentary bread followed by this delicious appetizer, the PATE MAISON , its a Pork Pate with pistachios and this was delicious, I used my extra bread that I got on the PATE and it was very satisfying, like I felt full already and I hadn't gotten to my main meal yet. My DAISY cocktail was delicious. Our main course came all at the same time and I knew my Son would enjoy his PORK CHOP 'coz he loves pork chop, this PORK CHOP is a Bone-in Pork chop with Mushroom cream sauce, I got a slice of it right away from his plate to taste and it was so tender and juicy, it tasted perfect. My son enjoyed his Pork chop. I got the CONFIT DUCK, it has crispy and tender duck thighs, it's lightly seasoned, and has good portions. Whenever we eat at a French restaurant my husband always gets the CASSOULET, it's a french Casserole with Duck confit, sausage, and pork belly, and as always he liked this dish. For dessert I ordered the MOUSSE CHOCOLAT and CREME BRULEE, the Mousse au chocolat was pretty good and big, so I let my husband and son have it and I secure my favorite dessert, the Creme brulle, just for myself, it was delicious and had a nice crisp caramelized sugar on top. The service was great, I just don't know which one was actually our server, 3 servers were serving our table the whole time we were there ;) Parking is the only issue we encountered, and maybe for me the space was a little issue, it's too small inside, but the food was great!

Yelp
Finally remembered to visit La Bonne Table in Hillcrest! Traditional French vibes. From the size of the restaurant and the white table cloths, to the waiters dressed in white collar button down shirts to the various photos on the wall. Our waiter was great and patient as we took our time ordering our dinner. We were enjoying the ambiance too much. When we finally made up our minds we had: Cote de Pore- served with potato gratin; absolutely mouth watering. Potato heaven. Moules a la bisque de Homard- Mussels! served with lobster bisque broth and fries. Finger licking good. Both of these entrees were delicious. Our appetizer was the: Rillete de Crabe-shredded crab, lemon juice and creme fraiche. Very tasty and light. Such a great meal, such a beautiful establishment, and what great service!! Thank you La Bonne Table for a delicious dinner. Looking forward to our next visit!

Yelp
Be warned, service is extremely slow! Even though we put our order in fairly quickly, we were there for just under 2 hours and ended up missing the movie we had planned for after. My guy took me here for Valentine's Day and it is such a lovely, intimate little place. I loved looking at all the decor on the walls. There was plenty, but it wasn't overwhelming. I absolutely adored how simple their cocktails were. Most places nowadays pack in a million ingredients trying to be innovative and "insta-worthy," but it's not necessary. My guy got The Saint and I got Kir Royal. Both were refreshing, simple and delicious! We started with the Escargots (delicious! had a nice amount of garlic butter on each piece, but I wish the puff pastries were crispier). For dinner, my guy got the Confit de Canard (the duck itself was delicious! I didn't like the mustard cream sauce at all. The brussell sprouts were cooked nicely, but I would've preferred a different vegetable that's not as bitter) and I got the Cote de Pore (the best part was the potato gratin. The pork chop was dry and lacked any real flavor. I know you're supposed to use the mushroom cream sauce, but it wasn't good). I would honestly say everything except for my pork chop was good and I would get again. I enjoy the simplicity of the menu and would love to come back again!

Yelp
French Onion Soup Salad Fresh Trout New York cut Steak The food was a culinary feast. Prepared by caring hands with pride. The French Onion soup amazing flavor, the salad fresh and plentiful, the fresh Trout delicate flavor with an amazing sauce. The Steak ooo la la. The service timely, polite and attentive . While my wife was savoring every morsel and I gobbling the steak. More clients arrived 4 young women gathered and the wine flowed the conversation delightfully boisterous. I could not help myself while leaving I decided to ask "Have you seen the TV show Emily in Paris" they all laughed and toasted me. Bottom line a must go with your loved one.

Yelp
Just to put it in context, wormwood is actually my favorite restaurant in San Diego. However after coming to La Bonne Table I think I have a new go-to. First, the ambiance is PERFECT. It's quiet, small, unassuming, dimly lit, so romantic. Service was kind and attentive, very warm. Mains are my favorite French mains I've ever had at a San Diego French restaurant !! Duck was phenomenal, partner loved his steak!! Appies were fantastic too -- best French onion soup in socal imo! I would say the desserts were pretty disappointing though -- the espresso martini had broken cream on top, crepe was too thick. Still, I would 100000% come again.

Yelp
The restaurant is a small little place that is a converted house with maybe 8 tables or so. Perfect for a quiet date night Service was very good. The server was friendly helpful and professional Food was good. Personally the prk pate has a strange aftertaste but I've never had it before so maybe that's normal Duck was very well cooked. Thought the sauce could have used more flavor and was overly buttery not enough mustard or whatever the flavor was supposed to be Chocolate hazelnut cake was very good. Dense moist and you could taste the hazelnut flavor

Yelp
Wow! What a gem! It is the coziest restaurant with great decor and a cute little bar in the back of the restaurant. The staff are super friendly. Our server was very nice and attentive. We went with our friends and decided to bring our own wine. Their corkage fee is very reasonable- I think $25. Their menu items are as well. I forgot to take a pic of our appetizers but remembered our entrees and desserts! Below is what we ordered. Frisée salad- fresh with a light vinaigrette. French onion soup- holy cow it was so good and such a generous portion. I was satisfied with just this! Pork chop- huge and so moist. Perfectly cooked and seasoned nicely. The mushroom sauce was a bit salty for me. The potatoes were to die for. So creamy and decadent. Everyone else ordered the cassoulet. It had duck and sausage in it with creamy white beans. They all raved about it. We will return soon! So worth it!

Yelp
Where have I been!? Went here with my wife and friends last night and was blown away by the ambiance, value and service of this place. We brought our own wine and paid the $25 corkage fee. We had the following: Salade Frisee French Onion Soup Cassoulet Cote de Porc Forestiere Crème Brûlée Chocolate Mousse We were blown away by the value (large dishes) and quality of the food - delicious! The location isn't big which adds to the charm. Service was great and Victor was so nice and efficient. We will be back very soon.

Yelp
This is the most romantic French restaurant in San Diego. I've had Duck Confit, Steak, their Pork Chop, Trout, Escargot, French Onion Soup, Pate, wine and my first ever Side Car beverage:-) if I haven't had everything on the menus, it's because I'm planning to go back - soon, very soon!

Mary H.

Yelp
Delicious and delightful. The restaurant is small and seating is very intimate. But the food is absolutely fantastic!!! After reading several mediocre reviews about the duck, I decided to go for it anyway. Am I glad I did! The canard de confit was so well prepared. The mustard sauce was light and luscious, and the brussels sprouts paired beautifully. And that cosmo was a nice stiff drink. Great dinner and I will definitely be back when I visit San Diego again!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my entire experience at La Bonne Table. I went early and got a seat at the bar no problem. I was promptly helped and when I said that I wasn't sure between the trout and the mussels I was told that a rainy evening might call for something hearty like mussels in a lobster bisque. The server helped me with the wine pairing too. Nice subtle jazz music played in the background in this 8 table restaurant. I highly recommend if you want to splurge a little on a wonderful dinner.

Yelp
I had dinner here last night with a friend, and I have to start by saying--this place is tiny but in the best way possible. The intimate, cozy atmosphere truly transports you to Paris. It's perfect for a date night, and I loved how warm and charming the space felt. We started with the bread and butter. As a baker, I tend to be very critical of baked goods, and while the bread had great flavor, it was a bit too tough for my liking--especially since no slicing knife was provided. Still, we enjoyed it, especially once we started dipping it in the sauce from our escargot. Speaking of which, the escargot was absolutely delicious! The sauce was so flavorful and vibrant, easily one of the highlights of the meal. For mains, I had the trout dinner, and my friend had the duck. We both loved our dishes--they were light yet satisfying. My fish was incredibly fresh, and the asparagus with almonds was cooked perfectly. The flavors were balanced and well-executed. To finish, we shared the crème brûlée. Personally, I didn't care for it, but I also don't think I'm a crème brûlée person in general. My friend, who has had it in Paris, enjoyed it but said she's had better. For drinks, I ordered a French 75, which was absolutely delicious--bright, refreshing, and well-made. Beyond the food, the experience itself was memorable, and the staff was incredibly attentive and sweet. I'll definitely be back for a date night!

Yelp
A little coffee and desert go a long way. We had finished dinner across the street and were actually going elsewhere for a sweet and an espresso when we happened on La Bonne Table. I had not been here in years and my dining partner had never been here, so in we went. We ordered the house made crepe auzette and the chocolate mouse. My dining partner had espresso. The crepes were a 9 out of 10 and the mouse was a 10 out of 10. Both were a delight, reasonably priced for the quality and the serving size was also spot on. Our server was great. He kept us plied with cold water and made sure we were taken care of. The six-top next to us had all manner of dinners brought and every one of them looked marvelous. It seems they all enjoyed every bite. If there was one qualm, the espresso was not served in a warm cup which brought the temp of thee drink down to tepid. A small detail, but a warm cup for any coffee drink makes the drink so much better. We both loves this place and will be back for a proper meal soon. It is small, quaint, and you feel truly transported to another country. Really nice, indeed.

Yelp
Cute little place, attentive staff, decent food, but they charge for bread and butter, and that for me is just so offputting. They can easily roll those expenses into the main courses. It's petty and it sets the wrong tone for the meal. The endive and frisée salad was excellent, the duck was pretty bland, and the chocolate mousse was delicious.

Yelp
I came here years ago for restaurant week with my parents and husband and had a good experience. I remember it being very intimate wirh excellent French fare. I wanted to come back and share the experience with our child, and did not review the "not good for kids" feature. We have taken her to some places like Huntress and Steak 48 and I had thought it would be ok, but I felt like we ended up causing so much trouble we should have just not bothered. First, I could only book for 4 through opentable. I figured it would be good to hold the spot and call to see if they could change it to 5, but it turns out they were booked solid and didn't have the space. They, impressively, said they called the other patrons to see if they would be willing to accommodate/change to somehow help accommodate which I thought was excessively hospitable, but no one was willing. We were fine leaving my husband home but when we actually got there my child refused to sit in her own chair and proceeded to...act like a child. I had him come join us after all since there was an open seat now and I thought he could help wrangle the kid, but I'm sure we were annoying other patrons and the staff. There was one staff member who was very kind and brought out some books and crayons that he said he always carries around for his own daughter. That was so thoughtful, and we were grateful. But it was clear to me early on I had made a mistake and we just kind of had to power through.... That said the restaurant week menu is great and a good value. The crab rillettes and lobster bisque were probably my favorite part of the meal. I got the steak frites and the frites were excellent, but the flavor of the steak and sauce weren't my cup of tea. The duck confit was more up my alley and the Brussels sprouts were divine. I must say the portions were very generous, especially the pork shank! The crepes Suzette were appropriately boozy and not overly sweet. The chocolate mousse was a large portion and extremely dark and decadent. My kid loved the food and ate a bit of everything, so at least she had a good time..? That said, do NOT bring your kid(s). Big mistake. Most of the clientele were older, but maybe that's because we were there for early dinner as we were dining with my parents who are seniors. As my daughter said "dinner?? It's not even dark yet!" Or something to that effect. Thank you, La Bonne Table for doing your best to accommodate us. Great food and fine ambience, surprisingly not bad parking. Recommend!

Yelp
This is our go-to place for celebrating special occasions. It never fails. Last night we celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. Yo remembered what we drank even though it's been a while since we've dined there. Service, food, ambiance all outstanding. Champagne, lobster and crab appetizer, mussels in lobster bisque, pork chop and crepe Suzette made for another amazing experience.
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
I attended during restaurant week and enjoyed a reasonably-priced prix fixe dinner. My crab appetizer and main-course pork shank were delicious and generously-portioned. The crepes suzette was just ok, with the sauce nice but the actual crepes a bit thick. My chair got uncomfortable by the end. The seating was close and I would not recommend for children. Others in my party were happy with a lobster bisque, steak, and chocolate mousse.

Yelp
I am kicking myself for not coming here sooner. 5/5! We loved everything about this seemingly old house turned restaurant. The food, the drinks, the service, all wonderful. Located on a hot little food corner on 5th Ave in Banker's Hill, across from the likes of Cocina de Barrio, Nola on 5th, and Huapongos, lies the quaint and cozy La Bonne Table. I've heard this is an excellent spot for restaurant week, however we just missed SDRW by a few days. However, I was not going to let that stop from trying out the French fair at LBT. We started out with the cheese of the day, $15, which included a nice sheep's milk cheese (I could not get the actual name of it for the life of me), poached pear, bread, and a balsamic vinaigrette or reduction. The cheese was a perfect starter for what was to come. We also had several cocktails, the Kir Royale, $13, and the Sidecar, $15, and both were strong, yet perfectly balanced. My lady doesn't even drink but she finished her Kir Royale before I finished my beverage, so I know she enjoyed it. We followed up with the Steak Frites, $44, and the Cote de Porc (16 oz. double cut Duroc pork chop), $36,- YES PLEASE! Both dishes were fantastic, well-seasoned, and perfectly prepared. The steak was incredibly tender, and the pork chop was juicy, both being benchmarks for their particular proteins. For dessert we had the Crepes Suzette and the Dessert of the Day, hazelnut cake, both $9 each. I expected a bit more from the Suzette, fresh fruit perhaps, and the hazelnut cake was rather small; however, both were tasty, and we really only needed one dessert to begin with- but hey Víva right!?!? And might I say, you could have paid quite a bit more for a meal of this caliber, so the $150 for two, including drinks and desserts wasn't bad at all. Parking can be challenging, but that's to be said about any place in this area; be aware that you may have to walk a bit, but I can promise you it will be well worth it. I can't wait to return, and knowing me, we'll probably just run it back with what we got last time. The restaurant is nice and open allowing for proper ventilation, and an abundance of fresh air. This also allows for a little people watching if you're into that sort of thing. Thanks to the wonderful team at LBT. We'll be back! Enjoy!

Yelp
Visited during restaurant week. Great menu, great service and nice food. The texture of the crème brûlée is amazing, a nice surprise at the end of the meal.

Yelp
Great experience. The place is small & charming. Our server, Victor was attentive & knowledgeable. They acknowledged the birthday with a complementary class of aged port & a delicious chocolate mousse.

Yelp
Normally I don't splurge on fancy French dinners, but it was the 15 year wedding anniversary AND it was Restaurant Week in which La Bonne had a nice three course dinner for $50...so yes! I've been to France twice, and La Bonne really feels like French neighborhood restaurant...small but elegant, quaint, and cozy! Service was friendly all around from the staff, and our waiter even brought out complimentary champagne for our anniversary! C'est Bon! Course 1(me): Pate...delicious! I love this stuff! And it was a huge portion for 1 person, but I ate it all. Definitely shareable Course 1(wife): Lobster Bisque...sweet, buttery, creamy, deliciousness! Course 1(me): Braised Pork Shank...amazing! This huge chunk of meat was so rich, juicy, and flavorful. Fall off the bone tender! The tomato sauce added a nice zest and robust flavor. The accompanying mashed potatoes were a perfect match. Course 2(wife): Trout Almondine...amazing! A generous whole trout full of moist, flaky, citrus infused white meat. Course 2(me): Crepes Suzette...love! The orange liquor sauce was delightful! Course 3(wife) Hazelnut Chocolate...EPIC! So rich, so decadent, so chocolately! Better than my Crepes Suzutte! The wife and I will definitely be back...probably in September for the next Restaurant week. Or I just might have to back for that cake...

Yelp
We came back for restaurant week and I felt like I fell in love with them again. Gone for couple times over the years and I really appreciate the update to the menu. For starters we got the lobster bisque and the crab rillettes which were both new to us, and WOW they were both so so good. Steak frites (the fries are amazing) and the duck confit (also a favorite of ours) for entree. And for desert we got the dark chocolate hazelnut (I think) cake along with the crepe. I don't personally care for the crepe but the chocolate cake was probably one of the best I've had - and within one piece of cake you can taste so many variations of chocolate. Another highlight was the butter that came with their bread. We had such a good time and we're so full afterwards. Definitely a must try during restaurant week but we will be back much sooner than the next restaurant week! Service is always lovely and the atmosphere is very intimate. We opted for sitting outside which was less stuffy.

Yelp
I was so excited when La Bonne Table opened up after the Pandemic eased up. It was so cute and charming on the outside and the reviews we spectacular. I must say, it didn't disappoint. The dining room is extremely small (some would say cozy), but they do have a little outside seating. All the dishes we have had here have been fantastic. The pate, escargot, trout have been well-prepared and appropriately seasoned. I ordered the cassoulet yesterday and it was absolutely delicious and even better the next day. I have had this dish at another restaurant where it was salty and unenjoyable. This was not the case. The cocktails are also good. The reservations fill up fast but you can do a walk-in and sit at the bar and meet some interesting locals. Wonderful neighborhood spot.

Yelp
Like this place so much. Tried their restaurant week menu. Everything was so delicious! It is a hidden gem. Price was reasonable as well.

Yelp
Celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary at La Bonne Table and it was such a great experience. I don't think we've ever had French cuisine before but after this meal, I can't wait to come back for more. They even gave us a complimentary glass of champagne each to celebrate our love! For starters we had the French Onion soup which was the best I've tasted! Then we had a slice of Formage with bread, followed by escargo. It was my first time I tried escargot and this was so good. It was flavored with garlic butter and a puff pastry hat on top. We ended up getting one more appetizer which was the Pate and that was one of the best I've had as well! For the main dish, my wife had some mussels in lobster sauce that included chunks of lobster and I had the pork chop with a creamy mushroom sauce and over Gratin potato's. We ended the night with a chocolate hazelnut cake and a shot of coffee

Yelp
I was really expecting to like this place based on the reviews and have been wanting to try this place out for a long time. We finally made a reservation to eat during SDRW and tried the rillette de crab, lobster bisque, the steak frites, and duck leg confit, creme brûlée and chocolate cake. I've eaten plenty of duck confit at different French restaurants in SoCal and in Paris and it's safe to say I think this was the worst duck confit I've had. I was really disappointed since I love duck confit and I always get it anywhere it's served. The duck was bland, the cream sauce was boring and filled with brussel sprouts. I barely finished my meal and had to take home the leftovers since I was dispassionate about my duck confit. The rillette de crab was very bland and it tasted just like tuna salad sandwich without the bread and crab instead. The saving grace was the lobster bisque that had great flavor. The steak frites were better but the steak was cooked very rare when we ordered medium rare. The frites were great and were probably the best part of the meal unfortunately. The pepper sauce had an incredibly odd taste to it and had a flavor reminiscent of soap. I think the peppercorns they used had an odd flavor. I figured dessert couldn't be any worse, but the creme brûlée also fell under my expectations. It was very liquidy and didn't have much hold and the sugar on top was scorched to show black burnt spots. I know creme brûlée means burnt cream but they really BURNT it . The result was a very unsatisfying liquidy and carcinogenic flavor. However, my husband's chocolate cake was to die for and they gave us champagne to celebrate our anniversary. Overall, I would definitely not recommend this place.

Yelp
Overall, place was excellent! It definitely feels like a fine dining in an intimate space. Food was great and presented well. I loved their french onion soup and the pork chop the best. Trout had bones and flavored mildly. It would have been nice to creamy sauce or some kind of dressing. This is an ideal place for a special celebration or a date. Id love to try their other dish as well! Merci!!!!

Yelp
Perfect cozy little date night bistro. I love LBT so much. Try the Duck Confit; won't order it anywhere else. Pork chop-perfection! I'm spoiled. Of course creme brûlée and chocolate mousse are wonderful. Did I mention French Onion Soup? Divine. Now I'm making myself hungry! Service is great, ambience is romantic and casually elegant. Guests are never rushed; reservations mandatory.

Yelp
This place was fantastic. The food was wonderful and the service was sublime. Walking into the restaurant transported me to France itself. I look forward to returning!

Yelp
Hands down one of the best French restaurants in San Diego. Tucked in the outskirts of Hillcrest, la bonne table serves authentic French cuisine but with American sizes. Everything is absolutely delicious, beautifully seasoned, and the experience took me back to Paris. You must call in for reservation or make a reservation online. The restaurant it self is small and the space was converted from a private home to a restaurant. Which in itself offers a very unique, intimate, and cozy dining experience. The servers were wonderful. Expect to spend around $60-70 per person for a full experience but I promise you will walk out super full and satisfied! This is an intimate dining experience so unless you plan to rent the whole space out, this is not a place for big parties. Parking can be tricky with street parking (meter parking).

Yelp
We tried La Bonne Table for the first time during San Diego restaurant week. We had a great time and really commend the restaurant and staff efforts for making sure all their guests have a wonderful time while dining! We brought our baby with us during dinner. She was in a stroller and I checked with the restaurant ahead of time to see if the stroller would fit at the table. The staff checked in with me and made sure the accommodations they could provide were fitting - they didn't have a high chair but could accommodate our stroller. We were immediately sat down when we entered and immediately waited on upon sitting down. Best service ever. We ordered: 1.) Starters: Salad d Endives and Rilletes de Saumon 3.) Entree: Steak Frites and Confit de Canard 5.) Dessert: Crepes Suzette and Chocolate Mousse The food was delicious! Our favorites were the salad and confit de canard (duck). If you are looking for a boozy dessert, crepes suzette is your pick. Also, the drinks here looked amazing! Pretty much every customer ordered a cocktail. I would definitely come back here again.

Yelp
Did I really not review this charming restaurant with French bistro food so good you'll think the chef fly over from Paris in the morning? The place is tiny, in what must have been the front parlor of an actual house. Service was warm, welcoming yet unobtrusive. Every single thing we ordered was perfect, from the bread -crusty , chewy and warm; pate (country style with pistachios); endive-frisée salad that had a memorable vinaigrette - we cleaned that bowl right out; the duck confit on Brussels with mustard cream sauce. The confit skin was crispy, the meat tender with the fat rendered out. I would never have thought to pair duck confit with a savory sauce but it worked beautifully. We finished with crepes Suzette which were freshly made with the perfect orange sauce. Yum. The only drawback might be that if there is a big group (more than 4 people in this place), it can get loud. The evening we went in, all the tables of two and four tops were conversing with each other using their "inside voices " as my mom used to say. All good. But the party of 6 was so loud I thought they had 10 people over there. Minor quibble and one the restaurant can't control. I am still thinking of the entire meal with great appreciation. And figuring out when I can go back!

Yelp
Sooo good. Went for my birthday, again, and we were all "Wow!" amazed by the beautiful and succulent pork chops we ordered. Always a special treat.

Yelp
Last night was a blast! We did a Table of 8 at La Bonne Table, Hillcrest, a what a good table it is! First off let me say that walking into this place it's like walking into someone's cozy dining room. When you look at the windows, Kathe says: "You can almost picture (because of the type of windows they are, and because of what the inside feels like) the Eiffel Tower". I must say at that if you are going to eat authentic French food this my friend is the place to go. We start our meal with their French Onion Soup. "Delicious" says Sheri. Kathe says: "Very savory". TaraRachelle adds: " Rich and deep flavor". It's crusted with cheese on the outside of the bowl that you can peel off. The two chefs at the table say: "That's my favorite part"! We also add lobster and crab cakes they call Gillette's de Homard et Crabe. Steven says: "Very good". Kimberly says: "It's seasoned just right". Kathe agrees:"The crab is great". I think to myself: "How can you miss with lobster and crab"? The white wine we pair is a simple chablis. Last time, we had a Joseph Droughin Chardonnay. We love that one. Try it off of any menu. It will not disappoint! We alert Victor our waiter, (who is always more than helpful in helping us pick our food and wine) to uncork our Red Cabernet as we follow the fish with Cote de Pore, a bone in pork chop. Kimberly loves the pork chop. Kathe says: "I don't usually like pork chops, but the pork chop with caramelized onions and a mushroom sauce is moist and delicious". She adds as an afterthought: "With a touch of mustard". Obviously she has a very good palate to detect a hint of mustard. TaraRachelle chimes in: "Really, really good". Actually everyone enjoys both pork dishes. And I just can't figure it out. A French restaurant with two amazing pork dishes, one better than the next. Merci beaucoup Chef! We enjoy our Confit de Canard (duck). Sheri loves the duck with Brussel sprouts, and so do I.  I mostly a pork and fish girl when I eat protein that isn't vegetables. And they do an amazing job with it. Kimberly (our other chef at the table) agrees. Sheri says: "The Brussel sprouts melt in my mouth". Moules Frites, although they don't call it that, is unusual to be steamed in a quality Lobster Bisque. That's up next. Kathe says: "I like all the chefs' little surprises, like the tiny shrimp stuffed into the Mussels". So many people enjoy the Mussels. Jarett de pore, the other pork dish covers the most amazing whipped potatoes. Kathe says: "I'm gonna grab me some of those mashed potatoes", and she's right to do so because they go quickly. So delish. This is our last but not leastI notice that we still have some red in our glasses, so as a surprise, I order two different chocolate dishes that everyone enjoys: a mousse in a tall sundae glass and a chocolate cake, to pair with the wine. Elizabeth is vegetarian. Now where or when could or would you order vegetarian food at a French restaurant? La Bonne Table, of course! She loves the salad and the Potato Gratin (Gratin Dauphinois). She says: "The delicious cheese mix on the potatoes is beautiful". Everyone loves the cheese plate with pears. Apparently, the line that runs down the middle is ash, not blue cheese, (which we all think it is). Either way, it's a beautiful cheese. Elizabeth likes the cheese with bread and the Legumes Du Jour (Brussel Sprouts).  She adds: "And especially the bread" (we know both the bread and butter are imported from Los Angeles and I took both home with me). Yes! It is that good. We will probably go again before the year ends, to see what's new on the menu. I will say once again, this chef does not disappoint. It's good, everything is good, EVERY time. Consistency. I think that's the key to running a great restaurant. Don't miss this one! You can check in on San Diego Foodies or our Carlsbad Foodies (depending on where you live) to be a guest at our table! The only thing that is better than the food is ..... the company. You will love our members!  Best, Chef Marian

Yelp
This is my kind of place. Located within a historic house in Hillcrest, La Bonne exudes a timeless vibe that invites romance, intimate conversation and of course appetite. From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed, like visiting a dear friend you haven't seen in a long time. Within moments we were enjoying perfectly made cocktails while browsing La Bonne's small yet enticing menu. Menu highlights: - Pâté Maison. Creamy and luscious this is gold standard paté. Spread onto warm baguette, with a smear of dijon and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt; just perfect. - Steak Frites. My steak was cooked to perfectly medium rare. Deeply flavored with just the right amount of salt, this steak was satisfying. I substituted gratin for fries, I couldn't have been happier. - Cremé Brulee. The top was shatteringly crispy with such a delightful custard hiding underneath. Another good standard. We arrived via Lyft but there appeared to be on street parking. Tho with so many tempting cocktails and well curated wine list, we will stick with Lyft. We simply had the best time at La Bonne. What an amazing find.

Yelp
I always come to French restaurants to try their French onion soup which lead me to here. The restaurant is super quaint, with only about 12 or so tables so you'll want to ensure you make a reservation! The service was phenomenal, the waiter never missed filling up our water and wine! The French onion soup was good, a tad salty though. The mussels were great though, such good quality! Another thing we ordered was the escargot, tasted amazing and I love the puff pastry top! Very nice restaurant and would definitely come back to try more!

Yelp
I highly recommend this place!! We went for restaurant week and we're so glad we chose this place. This place has an intimate, cozy vibe. The place is small, so definitely recommend a reservation. We didn't have to wait at all when we got there. The service is impeccable. The waiter is very attentive and professional. Our water is always filled and they cleared all the dishes and utensils before our next course. The menu consists of 3 courses. We tried the lobster bisque and the rillette de crabe. The lobster bisque was light and had a nice nutty flavor. The crab was also light and tasty. A bit like a crab mayo salad. They gave bread along with our appetizers, and both the soup and crab paired well with the bread. The stars of the show were the entrees. We got the pork shank and the duck confit. They were generous with the portion sizes. When we saw the pork, it looked like a little meat fortress. Both the pork and duck had super soft meat. It was literally falling off the bones. We didn't even really need to use the knives. The flavor of the sauces was amazing and really enhanced the meat. Really recommend trying either. For dessert, we all tried something different. We got the crepe with orange sauce, the chocolate hazelnut cake, and the creme brulee. The orange flavor really enhanced the crepe and was nice and light, not overwhelming. The chocolate hazelnut was delectable with a nice crunch that kind of reminded me of ferrero rocher. We liked the creme brulee the least since it was a bit thinner and not as rich as we are used to for creme brulee. Overall, we had an amazing experience at this restaurant. Service and food were both very good.

Yelp
Atmosphere is cozy and serves is great, however food was underwhelming. I got the 'Moules a la Bisque de Homard' and my friend got the 'Cote de Porc Forestiere 36'. While both were fine, nothing to praise, it was not outstanding. My lobster bisque was lost in a sea of muscles making it very difficult to eat and overall rather flavourless. The duck was dry and overcooked and was beyond under seasoned.

Yelp
Restaurant week was an outstanding value. We had reservations for an early dinner at 5 pm and the place was full. It's a small and quaint restaurant on a busy street corner in Hillcrest. I had the crab rillette, truite amandine, crepes suzette and Kir Royale. My meal was flavorful and light, but I felt very satisfied. The crab was fresh and I used it as a spread on the complementary and freshly made French bread. The trout was a generous serving. It was delicate and well balanced with butter and lemon and topped with asparagus and almonds. The crepes weren't overly sweet and a nice way to end a meal. The Kir Royale was slightly fruity and bubbly and the perfect French cocktail. Service was friendly and attentive. There are other menu items, such as the lobster bisque and pate, that I would like to try.
