No-Waste Pub La Cale Opens on Montreal’s St-Hubert Plaza | Eater Montreal

"I'm heading to a new no-waste bar opening this Saturday in St-Hubert Plaza that aims to generate no waste: beers will be strictly on tap (20 total — 10 from upstart craft breweries and 10 from established Quebec brewers such as St-Ambroise and Belle Gueule), there will be no paper napkins, products will come almost entirely from within the province, and all food waste will be composted. The long, narrow venue holds around 125 people and combines a friendly, unpretentious neighbourhood-bar vibe with a large rear stage for regular arts and culture events (Thursday comedy nights are already on the schedule), music shows, poetry nights, and other community programming led by four owners from arts and music backgrounds who are open to proposals. Drinks follow a no-waste approach too: two kombucha taps, work underway to put a non-alcoholic beer on tap, cocktails made with in-house syrups and mixers (some incorporating beer or kombucha), and spirits sourced from Quebec with only a couple of imported whiskeys. Under chef Justin Gallant, bar snacks will focus on local, organic produce and bulk items to reduce packaging — the menu will be predominantly vegetarian with vegan options, any meat will be ethically sourced and used nose-to-tail to minimize waste, and fish and chips could appear if a sustainable supply is found. Hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily." - Tim Forster

The Montreal Restaurant Openings to Know About in Fall 2019 | Eater Montreal

"On St-Hubert in Petite-Patrie a group of north-side locals with arts and culture backgrounds is opening Montreal’s first no-waste pub: it will avoid paper napkins and plastic straws, use only edible garnishes, offer takeout in mason jars, aim for only compostable organic waste, and vary portion sizes to cut food waste; social media says it's opening soon." - Tim Forster

A friend from work suggested this spot for our recent visit to Montréal. It was extra appealing for their accommodations for dietary restrictions, since we’re traveling with someone who can’t have lactose or gluten. We were initially seated at a high, very small table. When we asked to switch to a booth, we were accommodated as soon as it was possible. The waitress was very attentive and helpful. Our friend was very happy with having “low gluten” options, which he is okay with. The options and transparency on the menu makes it perfect for the dietary restrictions. The vegan poutine was good, as was the Eggplant-Ricalstta alla Cannelloni. My cauliflower wings were fantastic. (And we might just be traveling with someone who doesn’t appreciate poutine. We will forgive him). Loved the drink options for cocktails and beers, ultimately went with the original cider which was perfect. The dècor and atmosphere was great, nice lighting, cool posters, and live music was starting as we were leaving. Very cool scene, good food and great service!

Great atmosphere! Great for a big bunch of us, perfect for all dietary requirements. We loved the maple syrup cola :)

The good: Great and effective service. The less good: The couch is terrible and the table is not the best to eat on, at least the one we were sitting at. The bad: I didn't like what I ate. It was this pulled duck pancake for brunch. I couldn't tell if it was duck, or not. It was very sweet. A balance of sweet and salty would have went a long way. The pancakes were buckwheat but the texture was... weird. I'm used to that more in the form of a crepe, not a pancake. Their latte was was very expensive for what it was, and not out of this world either. The lemonade was really nice, though! I wouldn't go back, even if I love their concept. It's unfortunate.

Quitte a unique and wondeful expérience! The vegan poutine is truly better than a real one. Beautiful place ans very friendly staff. Highly recommend it!

We ordered the vegan Michigan poutine and the chef's pizza. I was able to finish my poutine just because I love fries but the tomatoe sauce they threw on top was bitter and I don't even remember tasting any cheese. They used a tortilla for the pizza and it was dry and super thin (definitely store bought). The toppings (vegan cheese, pesto, and veggies) were decent but a little oily than I would have liked. The waiter had to be asked twice to bring us water. It was not busy and the waitress was on the phone the whole time. We we told her we didn't like the pizza and she stood there for a few seconds without saying anything, making the situation unnecessarily awkward. She said she couldnt remove the tortilla pizza off the bill but because "half" of it was eaten. She gave a $11 discount. Anyways I was not happy with anything here.

Had the MTL à Table Table hôte special and it was really good :). The loukoumade however had zero flavour. The batter could be altered with some milk or sugar so that it tastes something. Apart from that, very good food.

Yelp
I came to see my cousin after a couple of years and we decided to go to this bar . For a Monday there was a couple of ppl . Most places were empty and the ambiance look good. Amazing cocktails. I tried a couple my favorite was dark and stormy. Spicy and strong ! My cousin got different types of beer and whiskey . We love the place . We ordered food . He is vegetarian and they had lots of options. Price was good . Cocktails 7 10. Shots depending what you pick. The waitress was super nice .
