First time coming here while spending the day in the area and after looking at their sign all day, we thought we had to try it. I guess this area is changing a lot and is part of the Heights and as such is catering to a more let's just say affluent clientele than it used to. So let's get that out of the way that their prices are a little steep and are in line with the Heights hipster pricing model vs. going to a mom and pop taco shop a few blocks north.
The restaurant itself is very clean with cool décor and the staff is very friendly and patient explaining the menu.
With the food, they use fresh ingredients where nothing is frozen or microwaved. A couple of us ordered the street tacos that are 5 small ones served on corn tortillas while the other had the Gringo tacos which come in 3 flour tortillas. I went with steak and one beef. Then you can go to the condiment table and put what you want on the tacos and they have everything you need from shredded lettuce to cilantro and salsa. All good and fresh stuff.
Now on to a few things I wasn't a fan of. I felt that the beef was way too greasy and both the steak and the beef were too salty, but then I'm kind of watching what I eat and this was my cheat day so take this opinion with a grain of salt (Yeah I know...sorry). The cuts of the meat were nice and lean but I think they kind of overdid it with the seasoning and grease...sometimes less is more. Again, I'm not claiming to ben expert on Mexican cooking and honestly I have yet to meet two people who can agree on what's authentic or not on any culture's food, but that's just my opinion. The other guys loved theirs for what it's worth.
The tacos also came with a cup of some other greasy / salty broth? I wasn't sure what that was and probably should have asked but apparently it's consumme. I did not care for that...seemed like heartburn in a cup to me but again, don't take my word for it. I think next time I'll just get the tacos and nothing else.
Last, the whole drink situation is a little weird. I saw boxes and boxes of Mexican bottled Coke, Fanta, Jarritos, and other diabetes inducing stuff along with beer (they apparently have a very sweet happy hour) and by the register they have the big plastic jugs of aguas frescas that they pour with a ladle but I didn't see any non-sugary non-carbonated drinks liked just plain old iced tea. I know, iced tea isn't traditional but this IS Texas so it's weird that they wouldn't have it.
