The 13 Best Restaurants In Troy, New York - Troy - The Infatuation

"The birria tacos at La Capital, located in a former cab stand downtown, are some of the best you can have anywhere—and that includes Mexico and Los Angeles. The graffiti-covered interior is a nice place to sit and have a moment with a cup of consommé that will live rent-free in your brain forever. Don’t be afraid to branch out from birria, either. The vegetable calabacitas filling is great, and their chorizo quesadilla has a thick layer of oaxaca cheese." - carina finn koeppicus

Do not pass GO, do not collect $200, go directly to La Capital Tacos for the tastiest little street tacos you’ve had since, well, the last time you went to La Capital Tacos! Honestly, I had the chorizo burrito months ago and I was not in love at all. Spongy and bright red meat that did not have a good mouth feel or flavor. In fact, I swore off the place until someone at work mentioned their birria tacos. Me, generally being a giver of second chances, I went back for another chance and boy am I glad I did! The birria tacos were super tender and juicy, topped with that melty white squeaky Oaxaca cheese with crispy edges from all of that hot grill lovin’. Damn. The flavor of the consommé was right-on and ready for dipping, and dipping, and dipping again. Chopped onions and cilantro for the top. I got take-out and the three little birria soldiers were sort of unceremoniously piled into the container haphazardly - a testament to the fact that others have also discovered this place and orders were screaming out of the kitchen. Honestly, these may have been the tastiest tacos. Certainly the best birria. I will be going back for more.

Google
1st time trying…10/10 amazing!! I have now gone twice this week!! (40 minute drive) If that doesn’t tell you how great it is! Such a cute spot to sit and everyone was so nice. Great prices for the amazing quality food they put out.

If you haven't noticed yet, ya boy loves tacos and really anything Mexican!! So, of course I have been to La Capital tacos in Troy!! The casual atmosphere is really great, from the way you order, to the lounge and seating area outback... It's all really great before you take a bite of food, or sip on one of those amazing drinks 🍷!! The barria tacos and consumé really are delicious. I get really big boy status and I'll drink the consumé... If you aren't drinking it, you're not doing it right haha. Im not a huge fish taco fan, but between this and the ceviche (not pictured) I'm into ordering them here. Just ye freshness or everything and authenticity is what does it for me. This is simple, if you are in the Troy, NY area, drop by, grab a taco and drink and tell em Vin Vin sent you, I'm tryna see something!! Deuecs, Vin Vin

Google
La Capital Tacos is a hidden gem. They use fresh ingredients, and flavors are perfect. I got three traditional tacos without cilantro, two chicken and one chorizo with a Pineapple soda. My husband got three traditional tacos without the cilantro, one pork, one chorizo and one carnitas. The pile on the meat in these small street tacos making them very filling. The seasoning is delicious on the chicken, pork and steak. We have also had before the churros for dessert and the Tres Leche cake both were delicious. A must for taco lovers.

Google
Nice place for a quick bite! I got 3 chicken birria tacos for dine-in and service was quick and food tasted good. Tacos were a little too greasy and the AC wasn't strong enough so it was still hot inside, but they tasted good and were around $15 for 3 tacos.

Google
Good and drinks are great, nice outdoor seating on the street but man, the bees 🐝 were plentiful that day. I e not had one bad meal here, flavors on point but maybe a tad pricier than some- but again, the food is that good. Birria and fish tacos are the best. These margs were 🤌🏽

Torri VanNostrand

Google
One fish taco , one burrito, and salsa with chips $35. I am not impressed at all. The salsa was less than desirable. Large pieces of tomato, flavorless. The fish taco was 5/10. Very small street taco size that fell apart when I tried to pick it up . I ate this with a fork. The burrito was ok. Far better taco: Mexican establishments in the area.

Google
Upon sharing my desire for Mexican cuisine with my husband this evening, we selected La Capital Tacos, a decision well-taken. My chicken quesadilla was exceptionally delightful, truly the best! Appreciation is expressed to our waitress very happy to served us! We defenitely coming back❤️
google avatar

Alexandria O.

Yelp
Authentic tacos with a heavy pour on the margs. 10/10 would go again. Quick ordering, easy seating, staff was professional.

Yelp
Ordered Al pastor Tacos, guacamole and chips, and a soda and margarita. The tacos were not warm, tortillas did not seem griddled, they were okay, highly edible. The guacamole was pretty disappointing, tasted maybe like there was some kinda preservatives in it. The salsa that came with the tacos was bland and for a authentic taco shop was more like something I would expect from a generic taco shop in NH. They claimed on the website, they have a small but curated tequila section, they had brand one on hand. Margarita was okay they use margarita mix, not the fresh lime juice stated on the website.... I really abhor sour mix. The Jaurito soda was as expected. Highly edible not something I'd seek out again Counter service Person at till said Birria are popular, we are not fans of that style as the can be soggy... But if you like that variety, I'd give that the green light

Yelp
You have to come try their birria tacos. They were so incredibly flavorful, well made and exactly what we were looking for during our short stay in the area. Although I only tried the beef, I imagine the chicken version is tasty as well. The indoor space is limited, but there's a lot of outdoor seating - complete with heated igloos for the cooler days. The service is friendly and if I lived in the area I would definitely, definitely go back.

Robert L.

Yelp
Staff was friendly and food was excellent. I had birria tacos and friend had pastor bowl with chips and guacamole (guacamole was fresh and tasty) The tacos were tender and well seasoned with caramelized cheese.and fresh toppings. If you like tacos this place is bomb!
google avatar

Corie Y.

Yelp
Just a shout out to this taco bowl. My coworker picked up lunch from here and I chose the Birria taco bowl. Oh man, this little container was packed to the brim with bright and fresh ingredients. Everything was so flavorful, I was honestly shocked how good this was. It was rice, a ton of birria meat, black beans, cheese, guac, pico, red onion, cilantro, and included cream and green salsa. The was enough for two lunch and I'm so happy I tried it. I will definitely be back for more of the menu. I need to try the birria tacos because the meat was killer.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Troy - hands down! If you're looking for fresh, authentic Mexican food, this is the place to go. I've rarely ever deviated from the "Tacos Con Todos" or tacos with cheese, lettuce, Pico De Gallo, and guacamole on them. I usually also order the chicken, carne asada, and carnitas. They're incredibly fresh and delicious! The meat is always so tender and juicy. Their margaritas are also fantastic as are the Guacamole and chips, and churros. You really can't go wrong with anything you order! Also, they only have a few indoor tables, but they have recently installed igloos on their outdoor patio with heaters in them. Their outdoor patio is also the best place to be when the weather is nice. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
The food here is delicious. I have enjoyed everything I've ever eaten here. The birria tacos are the best I've had in the area.
google avatar

Bill Z.

Yelp
You have several options for Tacos in downtown Troy - this is my favorite among them. The tacos are fresh, they're quickly prepared, and they're filled with ingredients as opposed to slathered with sauce. The margaritas are reasonably priced too. In nice weather, it's a great place to sit outside for your meal, savor your tacos, and perhaps people watch. Everyone who works here is just so friendly too. La Capital is never a bad choice when looking for a meal in the area.

Franshelis C.

Yelp
I've been to this place several times, every time has been phenomenal but I've always gotten their tacos. I wanted to try something new tonight so I went with the Carne Asado Taco Bowl, and it was delicious, great portion size and hefty on the meat and toppings. 10/10 every time!
google avatar

Andrena F.

Yelp
Best tacos I've had in the area! Fresh ingredients. Soft pliable corn tortillas (they don't fall apart) and lots of protein options. All at a very reasonable price.
google avatar

Kelly J.

Yelp
Best birria in the area! We also love the fish taco and chorizo taco. Peach ring marg is a must!
google avatar

Yelp
I was really in the mood for some good Mexican food so I decided to give La Capital Tacos a try. With that known, I ordered the beef birria tacos and a chicken quesadilla. To start, the beef birria tacos were very good. To explain, the shells were crunchy and definitely homemade. In addition, the brisket was very flavorful, but a little chewy. Furthermore, the beef consommé was juicy and matched perfectly with the tacos. These were simply tasty tacos. After that, I tried the chicken quesadilla and it was decent. To enumerate, the chicken was tender and flavorful. However, the tortilla was really thick and I didn't love the taste of it. The quesadilla was fine, but I've had better. In summary, La Capital Tacos has excellent beef birria tacos, but mediocre quesadillas.
google avatar

Leslie V.

Yelp
Looked up this place on TikTok for some suggestions and we went to celebrate my friend's son graduation and I have to say the service food and ambiance was great. The food was very tasty. A place to try in Troy.

Yelp
Ordered a pickup meal from la capital taco for the first time, and I'm glad we did! Everything was super fresh and flavorful, I'm so happy to have found a taco spot in the Albany area. The quesadillas were delicious and cheesy with the perfect amount of lettuce and pico de gallo on the side. The tacos with the works were a little overwhelming (as you can see in the photo, there is a LOT of the works) and can be a little tricky to eat without it making a huge mess, but was nonetheless tasty. Order was timely and accurate. If you plan to eat in person, note the inside of the restaurant is very small, but they also have some outdoor seating (including the little igloo domes in the winter months). They had a parking lot but it looked like the outdoor seating was blocking it but we found street parking without issue.
google avatar

Yelp
La capital has some of the best tacos, if not the best tacos in the area. With meat of high quality and juicy, and tender as I ever had in a taco, these tacos are real eye-opener that keep la capital in my memory as the place to buy tacos in the area. Added with the tacos on the side were two sauces that came with it to kick it up a bit. Services is very friendly. Parking is sparse, as it is a corner lot. Well done La Capital!
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
The birria quesadilla is amazing! I could dip anything into that birria and it would be great! I sat outside on a rainy day once and they have these cool domes you can sit in. I closed the door to the dome and it flew up into the sky. I was a little nauseous at first because all of the spinning but once I adjusted the view was incredible. I could see all the stars and even Venus! I spilled a little of my birria upon descent and I think I left my wallet on the moon. But all in all a good experience!
google avatar

Bruce M.

Yelp
If you are craving a taco, this is one of the best places to go. Super flavorful and delicious. Not an average American taco joint. This is the real deal.
google avatar

Becky K.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice and both times we all had great tacos. There are a few spots to eat inside but the majority of the seating is outside. The outdoor seating area is nice, and even though it is right beside a busy road you hardly notice it. There is some parking in the lot but the people we watched seemed to have a tricky time backing out and getting out of the spot. We have parked on the road around the corner and haven't had any issue finding a spot. To order: go inside and order at the counter. They give you a number to put on your table and then bring you the order when it is ready. I think we have now tried all of the the tacos and everyone has their favorites. Mine might be the Calabacitas. This is our go-to for when we are craving good tacos. Definitely get "the works" on your order - it adds a lot and makes a difference.

Grace M.

Yelp
Great food and good value. Seating can be tight but the outdoor area is nice and service is super quick.
google avatar

Kent P.

Yelp
Good food for counter service! We got a good table and had perfect weather. Dining area is in parking lot. Bathroom is thru kitchen - which was strange - but it was one of the cleanest bathrooms I've been in.
google avatar

Asaf F.

Yelp
La Capital Tacos has a really great outdoor patio space for dining with parking adjacent. I really liked their 3 Birria Tacos ($13) which were made with Beef Brisket with melted Oaxaca Cheese and Consommé. The Consommé was particularly tasty and I could have had a bigger portion of that and been happy with my lunch. My partner was less thrilled with their vegetarian CALABACITAS ($11) which was a quesadilla made with Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Pico De Gallo. I think that if we'd had some hot sauce and other condiments at the table that may have made a difference. The order took a good while to be made. At least 20 minutes. Which for a lunch felt like a long time. Overall though, really liked this venue and would go again. Service was just a little slow and the lack of condiments made it hard to add kick to some of the meals.
google avatar

Nooshi B.

Yelp
The tacos at La Capital are some of the most incredible tacos I've had in quite some time. Everything from their homemade tortillas to the quality proteins; our experience was fantastic. We went with their 3 taco tradicional which you can mix and match your proteins! (We did chicken, carne asada and pastor) We also did their salmon taco special which I highly recommend! The sauce and pineapple salsa was incredible and the salmon was juicy and well cooked. Their chips and guacamole is a must!! The chips are perfectly crispy and salty and we even asked for a bag to go because they were that good. Service was beyond wonderful! The kind gentleman there made sure we had everything we needed. They have some indoor tables as well as cute little heated igloos out in the parking lot where we sat. I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Lee S.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service- Save room for Churros for sure!! I cant wait to be back in Troy to stop in again!!
google avatar

Jordan R.

Yelp
Love their food! Delicious, and plenty to choose from, including super tasty meat-free options. The outdoor seating area is really nice, and I love that they have outdoor seating available year-round.
google avatar

Vincent K.

Yelp
These are literally the best tacos Al pastor I have had at any restaurant ever. Period. They are spicy and sweet and most of all, affordable! The horchata is an absolute MUST! the quesadillas are out of this world with a homemade tortilla it's unlike any other taqueria around. Would definitely go on a nice day where you can eat outside because there are hardly any seats in the in dodining room.

John R.

Yelp
Went there for the first time tonight. Food was good and I'd like to return but the bartender/cashier not friendly at all. After ordering our food and several apps plus drinks, I asked for a glass of water. Was told I had to buy a bottle of water and couldn't get tap water. Just very off-putting when you've spent $100 +

Yelp
This is a good find. On our drive home from Vermont, I always stop in Troy, NY, and look for good food. And I always find something good! My fav chinese resto was closed! Oh mon Dieu! They were on summer vacation and wont be open til Aug 18. Why didnt i check yelp first? Oy! Anyways, my husband flipped out and he is all ready to eat chinese food and he knew he wanted kung pao chicken already. Then i said what about some tacos. Let's try La Capital around the corner... aaaand we ordered. It was so good. No disappointments here. I had the 3play with the works - calabacitas, the al pastor, and chorizo. My husband had the 3play with tacos al pastor deluxe. DE LUJO, just kidding its just called the works, means they put more veggies and some guacamole. The food came out fast. I had a nice chat with the guy at the counter. There is a very small area for indoor seating but a big picnic area with several picnic tables in the parking lot. I will be back! I like this joint!
google avatar

Maeve M.

Yelp
So glad I found this gem at the farmer's market and that they have a restaurant now. Some of the best tacos in the area for sure. Can't go wrong, but the al pastor was my favorite! Love that you can mix and match too! Also got chips and salsa, which was unexpectadly a pico de gallo but delish
google avatar

Angela Y.

Yelp
Tacos we traditional, full of flavor-- I especially loved the Al pastor. I lived in Mexico in my 20s and they were legitimately delicious. Service was warm and place was spotless!
google avatar

AJ K.

Yelp
Stopped here as we needed gluten free food during our visit and found this gem. Great tasting tacos. We got the corn tacos so that we got the gluten free version. The tacos were loaded. They were loaded so much that the fillings were falling out....in a good way though. You would want that much filling as it makes the tacos extra special and also adds to the amazing taste! Totally worth it! I forgot to add, try their Horchata and the Jamaican water which is Hibiscus tea...it's just amazing!
google avatar

Nichelle W.

Yelp
So this was my breakfast for the day... The tacos were delicious along with the beans and rice. Great customer service, great staff.
google avatar

Marisa L.

Yelp
Give them all your money. As a Latinx person, it's very important to support the community, and this restaurant is proudly Mexican owned. I have been going here literally since they opened their doors. I love watching them prepare my food and yew even the staff are Mexican. The food is fresh and delicious every time and they always have consistent quality!! I love the outdoor seating area. Our faves are the Birria, Agua De JamaicaAny 3-tacos Con TodosCarne Asada QuesadillaChips and Guacamole. We even get their Valentines Day special because the tacos are THAT GOOD. It's real authentic Mexican tacos in the heart of Troy. Viva la Raza. Get over there...Andale! Oh and you have got to try their igloos....

Tom M.

Yelp
When in Troy there is no doubt that I'll stop in for some delicious tacos, burritos or other delicious Mexican favorites. Always, fresh ingredients are used and the evidence is brought forth with every bite.
google avatar

Jeech N.

Yelp
Wow, this place had some of the best tacos that I've had outside of Mexico. Don't sleep on it. They also had tamarind jarritos which is bomb. Only weird thing is bathroom is in the kitchen. Otherwise, great. Don't be confused, $5 is worth it for these tacos.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
Order your tacos con todos - it's worth it! Quality ingredients and portion. It looks intimidating to eat at first- I just took a fork to some of the filling until it's manageable to eat as a taco and they're very delicious! A great combination of flavors.
google avatar

Skylar L.

Yelp
I've gotten take out from here twice and both times were really good. Birra tacos are absolutely amazing & their quesadilla shells are a bit thick, they seem like they may be homemade?? Either way, neither entrée disappointed. Would definitely recommend & go again
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
After a trip to New Mexico a couple years ago, I was forever spoiled when it came to Mexican food. Chipotle no longer cut it when I wanted a good taco and local Mexican places generally didn't either. Then La Capital Tacos opened a couple blocks from my apartment. I decided to give them a try today and holy bleep, it's dangerous that I live so close. La Capital Tacos is a small establishment in the former Capitaland Taxi building at 4th and Ferry in Troy. Inside, you have a counter and a couple tables. Mexican bottled soda is for sale, but a lot of people (myself included) just get takeout. 3 tacos cost $10, or you can get a deluxe version with additional toppings for a few dollars more. Regular tacos come with onion and cilantro and you have your choice of 6 meats. For my 3 tacos, I chose chicken, al pastor (marinated pork), and carne asada. 10-15 minutes after placing my order, I was walking out with fresh tacos. These tacos are legit, featuring a tortilla filled to the brim with meat and a light coating of onions and cilantro. No rice filler here. The chicken was excellent and juicy. The carne asada was good, but probably my least favorite of the 3 meats I sampled. My favorite, though, was the al pastor. Juicy pork with an excellent adobada marinate that added a nice kick was heaven on a tortilla and a taste of (New) Mexico in Troy. To heck with other places claiming to have good tacos. If you want legit tacos like you'd find on the streets of the Southwest, La Capital is your place. Sure, it's a tad expensive, but it's far cheaper than flying to New Mexico. I'll be back before I know it for another trio of al pastor tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely love this lunch spot Terrific tacos and outdoor dining available Authentic and Delicious

Mary S.

Yelp
The best Birria my son's ever had- and he's eaten a lot of Birria- and we are from SoCal, land of tacos. I tried the zucchini, the chicken and carnitas tacos "al todos" with everything on them. So delicious! The green salsa is limey and refreshing. 2 tables inside, but lots of seating outside when the weather is warm. Craving tacos? Get them here. SO GOOD!
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
Price is right: 3 for $10 tacos (mix and match permitted) and service was efficient. Order comes with small cups of spicy (red) and mild (green) salsas (cashier asked if we wanted spicy, mild, or both) and tacos are topped with red onion and cilantro. Cashier told us our two orders of 3 tacos would be ready in 8 minutes and that was pretty spot on. On a Saturday afternoon, though, it was basically impossible to distance from other customers as we were waiting to order our food because the space is so small. That made me pretty uncomfortable as not all were masked. We took our table number to a nice outside picnic table. Unfortunately, my husband's order was mixed up a bit as he was given al pastor taco instead of a chorizo. However, it was okay with us as we got to try more variety. Between the two of us, we had chorizo, chicken, al pastor, and carnitas. Although the tacos were all fine and happily eaten, every single option was pretty bland. I love Mexican chorizo, but this variety didn't really have the crispy bits or the kick usually found. The chicken (thigh) was cooked well so it kept its moisture, but it needed more seasoning. Same with the other pork options. The salsa roja had a real kick, so give that a try if you enjoy heat. The salsa verde was bland. I wanted for some kind of garlic or distinguishing flavor to come through. I thought everything could use a pinch of salt. The lime wedges served with the tacos helped with flavor. The corn tortillas were great, though. Absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, although these were A-OK tacos; these sadly weren't my dream tacos. Sitting outside on the little back lot was enjoyable, and the meal was quick and easy. Maybe we'll give it another go in the future, as those tortillas were pretty memorable.
google avatar

Jackie W.

Yelp
Carne asada is the best. Then the veggie taco. Chicken was probably my beast favorite of the 3 but still good. The guac is probably a 3/5 because it's very runny. The ceviche is surprisingly quite good.

Chase C.

Yelp
Tacos are killer. Best I've had in the region. Margaritas are damn good. Cute little spot with friendly staff. Will 100% be back.
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
I will drive out of my way and find any excuse to eat here. Parking is pretty easy in their lot or in the street. Love their outdoor eating area. There is a wood fence between the sidewalk and eating areas which makes it feel both secluded and part of the street vibe at the same time. They had individually heated clear tents in winter. Love their street tacos and recently tried their birria tacos - in love. The dipping sauce is so tasty, I ate it like a soup. The employees are also always friendly, which tops off an already great experience every visit.
google avatar

Juliet V.

Yelp
Very good tacos! We ordered takeout and each tried the three taco plate. I had the pollo asado, carne asada and al pastor. My husband had chorizo, carne and al pastor and my son had a similar combination. All were flavorful and fresh tasting. The corn tortillas held up well to the fillings. The al pastor was my favorite by far. The marinated pork was delicious and so flavorful. The biggest problem was telling them apart! It would be very helpful to label each takeout order. With all the vegetables and sauces they all looked alike! Overall, the quality is good and very affordable. I look forward to trying the fish tacos, ceviche and of course getting more al pastor next time.
google avatar

Caitlin W.

Yelp
Swung in here during a little toddle around downtown Troy yesterday. The space is a delight: a former taxi stand that looks like a dive bar in Brooklyn that only serves house-infused soju, but instead it's a taco shop. I decided to try my first ever birria tacos, which they had on special. I can't say how they compare to other birria tacos, but I CAN say that getting an order of them was one of the better twelve bucks I've spent lately. Also, the Agua de Jamaica is delicious and not too sweet. 10/10 would cram tacos down my neck here again.
google avatar

Sanjay N.

Yelp
Great little street taco place in downtown Troy! Very big flavors, very large helpings, fresh and delicious! Definitely one of the more authentic taco spots in the capital region, and right down the street from some awesome bars and restaurants, and very walkable to downtown Troy. The service was excellent, we actually were going to make margaritas at home and they actually gave us some limes to take home with us which was huge and saved us a trip!
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
A fantastic go to for lunch. Burrata tacos are amazing. Ask for an extra side of lime crème, this is to die for. Great atmosphere sitting outside!
google avatar

Raya V.

Yelp
It was good. Cute outdoor seating. No wait. Our food was out ASAP as well. I had the Calabacitas Tacos and they were decent. Someone else tried the Birria Tacos and said they were good. I personally think it was overpriced for tacos so I probably won't go back, but not mad that I tried them.
google avatar

Kate R.

Yelp
Small place with outdoor seating. Good tacos for a good price. I got the birria tacos for $13 which is a great price for three good tacos! I do wish the birria was traditional lamb but I know that's hard to find. It was good anyway! Will definitely return especially because of the low prices.
