La Casa de Iris Is the Hottest Puerto Rican Street Food Spot in Long Beach | Eater LA

"Operating from a colorful red, blue, and white tent decked with Puerto Rican flags at 3170 Cherry Avenue in Long Beach, the family-run Puerto Rican-style street stand La Casa de Iris opened in 2023 when Maria and her son Eddie set out to fulfill matriarch Iris Negron’s dream of selling her food. I observed that all dishes are made to order, so there’s often a wait, and that the menu honors the family’s timeless recipes—fragrant pollo guisado served with arroz con gandules; garlicky mofongo (sold as a side or stuffed with pernil, beef, or chicken); airy, spongy rellenos de papa (potato balls) that some feel may outshine bakery legends; pastelitos and pastelillos, and island pasteles made from yucca, plantain, and pumpkin wrapped in banana leaves; vasos Boricuas (skewer cups) built with mayo-ketchup, arroz con gandules, crumbled chicharrón, mofongo balls and a skewer of meat; and jibaritos, pernil, and pollo guisado showcasing Iris’s sazón. The operation is clearly a multigenerational effort—Maria teaches recipes she learned over decades, Cristina runs the register, Alexis cooks, Edwin greets customers—and despite the pressures of each service the food comes out bold and faithful to Iris’s seasoning. They relocated from a crowded vendor corner at Pacific Coast Highway and Figueroa to a parking lot behind a dispensary in April 2024, and in the two months since the move loyal customers (especially Puerto Ricans) begin lining up each Saturday until they sell out." - Bill Esparza

As someone who grew up in Boston eating Caribbean food, this place is delicious! 10/10! So hard to come by in LA. I highly recommend and will be coming back! The restaurant is so aesthetically beautiful, colorful and tropical just like PR. It’s also very small, with only about 6 tables and they get snatched up pretty quickly! Plan to order take out and eat elsewhere (which wasn’t an issue for my friend and I!) Found parking easily! It was about 1:30pm on Saturday so it was definitely busy. Took about 30-40 min for our food. Service was great!

Google
Best Puerto Rican food in town! I took it to go, but I couldn’t resist the wait. I ate it in the car. It was amazing 🥹

There is no bathroom but there are tables to sit at, which struck me as weird for a restaurant. Our table ordered a couple of mofongos (large portion), two pasteles, a papa rellena, ground beef empanadas and an order of tostones. The tostones were really good! However, the mofongos were over seasoned and the rest of the food was under seasoned. The chicken pastel was edible but too wet. The pork pastel was not edible. The pork tasted rancid. The papa rellena was too soft - it fell apart when we cut into it. I will say the dough for the empanada was great but the filling left much to be desired. I’ll add that I’m Puerto Rican and grew up in Chicago where there are more options. I guess the search for good Puerto Rican food in California continues. Of note, parking is difficult near the location. You’re going to have to walk a bit.

Google
This was my first time trying Puertorican food. The food was amazingly wonderfully delicious finger lickin good. I got the Pollo Gisado with tostones arrow con abechullas and macaroni salad. I will be going back and trying more food. If your looking to try something new go here you won't be disappointed. Shout out to the cook you making your ancestors proud. Service was good very welcoming and the atmosphere is a vibe . 100 out 10

Yelp
Ever since I moved to Long Beach from Chicago I was so sad without having an authentic Puerto Rican place to eat, but finally my prayers were heard. The restaurant is so beautiful, it gives all the island vibes. Service is a 10/10 and the overall experience 20/10. The food has amazingly great taste and each plate is served sooo aesthetically. I will be back soon, next time with friends so they taste our cultural cuisine because La Casa de Iris tastes just like wela's cooking. Que dios les bendigan!

Yelp
Pros: Foods are flavorful with that authentic Puerto Rican flavors that we admire. It's conveniently located by the train stop. Foods came out really hot and portions are rather big. Nice ambiance in there. Cons There is a young girl at the counter who looks like she is 15 so don't expect great customer service. While the flavor was there, the bistec encebollado consistency felt like a meat pureed so was the rice (moro con grandules). There's no parking unless you park at the nail salon's parking spot and risk of getting your vehicle towed away. Tables were on top of each other.

Yelp
I've been dreaming of the day Long Beach would finally have a Puerto Rican restaurant serving food that tastes just like home, and La Casa de Iris answered my prayer! Since their soft opening, I've already been there three times (and counting), because every bite transports me right back to growing up in Puerto Rico. The flavors are soul-satisfying, the portions generous, and the entire experience feels like you're visiting family- which makes sense, since it's family owned and operated. And let me tell you about the decor: it's beautifully authentic, full of vibrant touches that remind me of the island, from the art on the walls to the little details that make you feel like you've stepped right into a cozy spot in San Juan. It truly adds to the experience and makes you linger a little longer, soaking it all in. Now, let's talk about what I've tried (because you know I couldn't stop at one dish, not in the same visit either!): Arroz con gandules - fluffy, perfectly seasoned, just like abuela's. Carne frita - crispy, tender, mouthwatering. Mofongo - both plain and stuffed with chicken, absolutely spot on. Empanadas - golden and flaky, bursting with flavor. The sampler platters too, which let you sample a bit of everything. Each dish has been a 10 out of 10. Honestly, if you've ever longed for that comforting Puerto Rican taste- or want to see why we brag so much about our food- this is where you'll find it. There is one little heads up: it's a cozy spot and always full, so chances are you'll have to wait. But trust me: it's entirely worth it. And something tells me with how quickly they're winning over Long Beach, I hope a bigger location opens soon!! I can't wait to come back and bring more friends to taste a piece of my Puerto Rico. If you're reading this and wondering if you should go: just do it. Treat yourself. Let your taste buds take a mini vacation!

Yelp
After going to Long Beach Port's Green Port Celebration Harbor Tour, we took the Metro en route to a different place for lunch, but when we got off at Anaheim St. station we noticed La Casa de Iris. I originally just took a photo to send to my friend Iris, but then we decided to change our plans and try it out for lunch since we like Puerto Rican food. The interior is quite small for dining in with only a few tables, but service was very friendly and the interior was colorfully decorated. The menu was fairly large with dishes I have not seen at other Puerto Rican restaurants. Prices were reasonable (most dishes a little under $20), and great value too once we saw how massive the portions are. There really are not too many places offering Puerto Rican food in the area so I feel like the demand definitely exists. We ordered mofongo relleno con pernil, and it came with A LOT of meat. I did wish the chicharrones were crunchier in the mofongo but it was tasty overall. The sancocho (only served on weekends) beef stew was flavorful with a ton of ingredients, though only a few pieces of meat. Finally, the jibarito beef sandwich was super unique with flattened plantains instead of bread forming the top and bottom. Street parking only but as mentioned above La Casa de Iris is accesible via public transit as well. FYI, there is no customer restroom inside. Would definitely like to come back to try more off the menu, the Bori-Cups in particular look very interesting!

Yelp
Heh, I'm sad I missed my chance to be the first review - I was also at the grand opening, and yes, it did take like 2 hours to get my food, a fact that I wouldn't ding them for at all, since it seemed like a quarter of Long Beach showed up for the grand opening. It is very true that Long Beach, and really SoCal in general, has long been starved for Puerto Rican food, and it is just *so* good. I hadn't had mofongo in an *eternity*, and it really is one of the best dishes any culture has ever come up with (so obviously that's what I was there to get and to judge them on, mainly.) You order at the front, which presumably when it's not their first official day open, would be quite quick - then they have just a few tables inside, so obviously I got my order to-go. I do, however, want to point out a *very* convenient quirk of their location: Trademark Brewing is *just* across the street. Trademark has *tons* of seating and is byo food. I live in the area, but La Casa de Iris also has a very tiny parking lot - Trademark has a larger one. Iris's drink menu is also a small handful of cans of soft drinks, whereas Trademark obviously has a much larger and more interesting menu of drinks to choose from (i.e. beer). So obviously I got it to-go - and will probably continue to. Craft beer went *great* with mofongo, as you'd expect. So: great choice of location! Anyway, I did also try one of their potato balls, which I thought was just decent. Don't get me wrong - if you put down a big tray of them at a party, I'd absolutely *house* them. But for $4, they weren't quite as big as I was expecting, nor quite as crispy as the ones from Porto's. Not gonna ding them for that at all either, though, that not being what I was primarily here for. What I *was* primarily here for, the mofongo: sooo good. Other than not being quite as pretty for being stuffed into a to-go container (not their fault: it's what I asked for) - absolutely as good as the best mofongo I'd had when I was in San Juan once, years ago. (A trip in which I just went around trying mofongo from as many restaurants as I could.) Great mofongo, *excellent* pernil. I look forward to trying all four meat options at some point, but the pernil was seriously excellent. Strongly recommended. Only real complaint about it - they also had a large container of pepper water, that appeared to be made in-house, by the register, also very good, if you like that sort of thing, which obviously I do. I doused the top of the mofongo with it on the way out the door, so obviously, when I ate it a few minutes later, the mofongo on top was clearly one micro-step tastier than the mofongo on the bottom. They should really have small to-go containers ready for people to take some pepper water for their to-go orders. (It's very good pepper water.) Super friendly people, too, so I'm glad there's such an immediate buzz! I definitely look forward to coming back when it *isn't* a madhouse.

Yelp
The food was great the service was great. I definitely think this place is perfection and gives the Boricua feeling of the island. We also got the Bacalaito but didn't get a photo of that before we started digging in. This place is a must try if you have been looking for delicious Puerto Rican cuisine.

Yelp
Really cute looking inside (5 tables only). So today was grand opening and from the time we got into line til the time we received our food it was over 2 hours. So be prepared...we waited in direct sun and should have brought water with us. I got the jibarito with pork- the pork was super tasty, but the bottom tostone completely soggy.(next time i will eat there not to go). Very nice people and we will definitely be back.

Yelp
The food and ambience is perfect. It's such a warm and nice place to walk in. I felt like was taken to the Island. The food was amazing! Service was great and the food nice and hot! If you are a foodie person like me and you want the flavors of Puertorican food! You must come!

Yelp
Coming from a Puerto Rican, this restaurant had delicious and authentic Puerto Rican food. There was a little bit of the wait but the food was fresh and delicious and definitely worth the wait. They feed you great portions and service was excellent! It a small casual mom and pop style restaurant. It's often crowded because the food is just that good, but we were able to have our large party seated and served.

Yelp
This was the most authentic/good tasting Puerto Rican food I've ever tasted in SoCal. The mofongo was delicious along w the arroz con gandules. I also had a pastel and it was good as well. I went during lunch with coworkers, and it was a little busy but not awful. Friendly staff, Puerto Rican music playing, and prices are reasonable for the quality/quantity that's provided. My only complaint is that there is no restroom.

Josh R.

Yelp
Authentic Puerto Rican food is hard to come by around here, but this place absolutely nails it. The flavors are rich, comforting, and taste just like something abuela would make. Every dish is clearly made with love and tradition. The carne frita was crispy, flavorful, and cooked just right. The arroz con gandules had that classic, well-seasoned taste that brought everything together. This is the kind of spot that deserves to be known. If you're craving real Puerto Rican food, this place delivers. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Driving from Riverside, this spot did not disappoint!! Food is delicious, had the pollo guisado and it was great. My wife enjoyed the Pincho cup. This was also great. I will definitely be back. The owner Iris was very nice and came out and introduced herself. Great job Iris and team.

Yelp
Great food . They are still a little bit slow with the service because they just started but the sazon is worth it. I can't wait to see this business blossom.

Yelp
Cute little small restaurant with amazing food. The food exceeded expectations and the service was great. Haven't been able to find anything comparable to Puerto Rican restaurants in NY and this is it!!

Yelp
As a Puerto Rican living in LA for 20 plus years, it's hard finding authentic, delicious Boricua food. Some favorites to try out are the mofongo con pernil and the bacalaito. The portions are generous and the flavors remind me of my household. The service was impeccable.

Alexis H.

Yelp
the restaurant has a wonderful ambiance and has a homey feeling. The food is authentic and delicious. I witnessed every single worker provide excellent service and care to each customer. The food was a bit of wait but that's because everything it fresh and cooked in house. We got our food faster than quoted and the interior is gorgeous. My smallest critique would be the food was a bit lukewarm instead of hot and the food was a tad bit too salty.

Shanelle J.

Yelp
1000/10 loved my pollo Guisado y bacalaitos! Taste just like it came from my grandmas house! Great customer service.

Paola H.

Yelp
My boyfriend is Puerto Rican and he's been feeling a little homesick so I was trying to find a place that can bring him a little piece of home. He said the food here is a 10/10 and I agree! It was my first time having Puerto Rican food and it did not disappoint. The place is small but it feels like your family living room vibes. The decor is sooooo cute with PR flags all around and gorgeous murals. It's a family business which makes this so much better. Prices aren't so bad since you get big portions (either way the food is totally worth the price)! This is a spot I'll most definitely come back to. Parking is a bit tough since it's on the Main Street but we just parked at the hospital lol I really wish them all the best and all the success so they can expand their restaurant haha

Yelp
I decided to try La Casa De Iris in Long Beach today so I ventured 45 minutes from home to try a taste of PR. Here is my take on the restaurant. The location is near a busy intersection of Long Beach Blvd with no viable parking although parking is available a short walk away. It is very small place with a nice tropical decor. It has about 6 tables. I managed to get a table with a couple of minutes after my arrival. The staff was pleasant and the waiting time was short. Now for the food: I ordered the mofongo filled with pollo guisado and a pastel. The chicken had a good taste but I bit into 3 pieces of cartilage. The mofongo was plentiful but was a little too dry for my taste. It needed some caldo or mojo de ajo. The pastel was good but needed a little bit more salt and definitely a lot more "savor criollo " (sofrito con mucho recao). I will try the restaurant again given that there are so few Puerto Rican restaurants in SoCal.

Matthew P.

Yelp
So glad to have a great Puerto Rican spot here in Long Beach. Its well decorated and the food was amazing. I had the Sancocho and it was one of the best Ive ever had. It reminded me a lot of back home in New York. The Iris Sampler was well prepared and the empanadas were bomb. 5/5, definitely coming back here!

Alexandra A.

Yelp
The food 10/10 the service 10/10 drove an hour to get there and it was worth it !! So happy with how everything turned out

Joel L.

Yelp
Loved the food, loved the service and loved the hospitality and ambience! Will definitely recommend!

Yelp
Came to eat here for the first time and I was very impressed with food, atmosphere and friendly people. I had the chicaron de pollo and I absolutely loved it. I'll be back for sure!

Kylie B.

Yelp
As a Puerto Rican I miss our food while on the west coast this brings me back to a taste of home. The vibe is so homey and welcoming and everyone is so nice a friendly. The food was really good and packed with those Caribbean flavors we love. They are small so be prepared and patient because the food is worth the wait! Will definitely be coming back!

Jewelussa A.

Yelp
My family and I have been following this place for awhile excited to try it! First off the Presentation alone was such a vibe! Definitely brought me back to my roots! The food looks amazing! You can tell this is an authentic place to eat! The service is very warm and welcoming!

Jazlynn H.

Yelp
Waited about an hour and a half in line to order my food and another two hours to receive the food. The food was good although the bistec encebollado was a little too vinegary.. The place had nice vibes. Staff looked annoyed whole time I was there but other than that it was ok

Nelson C.

Yelp
Best Authentic Puerto Rican food! Very tasty and made with lots of love! The service was amazing. They are very attentive. The place is very nice. You have to get there early, because the line is out the door. Definitely coming back!!
