La Casa de los Abuelos Review - Downtown - Cancun - The Infatuation

"La Casa de Los Abuelos means “the grandparent's house,” but this spot sort of feels a bit more like a Mexican diner with vintage photos and art on the walls. Head here before you hit the beach for a breakfast or lunch of flautas, sopes, and quesadillas. Get a gordita (or three), and explore the bakery menu of churros, cornbread, and tartlets." - Barbara Gutiérrez

Classic Mexican Dining with a Touch of Elegance This restaurant delivers a refined take on classic Mexican cuisine in a classy yet relaxed atmosphere. From the moment you step in, the inviting ambiance and tasteful decor set the tone for a pleasant dining experience. The food is a standout—authentic Mexican dishes crafted with care and fresh ingredients. Each plate is beautifully presented, with bold flavors that respect tradition while adding a modern twist. The freshly made pastries are a delightful bonus, clearly prepared on-site and perfect as a treat with coffee or as a sweet finish to your meal. Service is exceptional—prompt, professional, and attentive. The staff are clearly well-trained and go above and beyond to ensure guests feel welcome and well taken care of. Located in a convenient area, it’s easily accessible and ideal for both locals and visitors. With fair prices for the quality and experience provided, this restaurant is a great choice for anyone craving authentic flavors in a more upscale setting. Highly recommended.

Google
What a cute little place that has "abuelos" and "abuelas" to label the bathroom doors. They also just had photos of grandparents everywhere which was quite interesting. Waiters and waitresses very friendly and organized, I think they were a little persistent in offering us desserts, though we didn't really want any. But I think they were just meaning well--like grandparents offering their grandchildren food, ya know? I ordered some flautas, chocolate de agua, and a yogurt fruit cup. The flautas were pretty good and so was the chocolate, but the fruit cup was a little warm which was worrisome. It's okay though, I survived. Otherwise, the environment was very homey and I'd recommend it!

Google
Great for breakfast, not ideal for dinner La Casa de los Abuelos is a solid option if you’re looking for a quick, affordable breakfast. The menu is generous, the service is efficient, and the food hits the spot especially in the morning when you want something hearty and traditional. That said, for dinner, it really loses that cozy, homemade feeling. The place starts to feel more like a fast-food chain than a sit-down restaurant. It lacks warmth or personality. If you’re after a more homestyle dining experience, this might not be the place. But if you just want to eat something simple without spending too much, it definitely gets the job done. Respect to the team — they work hard and keep things moving. Just know what to expect before you go.

Google
Breakfast for dinner and it was so good, you can upgrade and get yogurt, fruit and coffee to go with it. They had a big menu anywhere from gorditas, chilaquiles, arrachera, sandwiches etc

I have been coming to Casa Los Abuelos for years. Food and service is great. The atmosphere very quiet. Love the place!

We had the pork pozole with all the trims. Absolutely delicious! Thursday night is 2 4 1! A steal. Recommended

Google
Went a bit experimental here. I liked the Chamoyada (spicy mango juice with ice shavings); quesadilla chicharron was not my thing; tacos are good as ever; nopales (cacti) was so so. But our server was wonderful; very friendly and helpful. The place is also nice (and huge). Also, there is the adjoining bakery with a great selection of breads. They were really nice too.

Yelp
Great food Service as well And excellent price, the veracruzanos eggs delicious, and the chocolate milk too

Yelp
The service was great, I think the issue is with the kitchen. Nothing looks like in the pictures and the taste it's too much of a can tomatoes sauce. The bread it's amazing The restaurant part could be much better. Our eggs called for fry plantains, it did not have them. Yesterday my sandwich had French fries, took them 15-20 minutes to get catchup. I was done. Taste it's not there. I think the kitchen has a lot of work to do to be as good as it can be.

Yelp
I had found this restaurant while doing a search online, and it seemed popular with the locals, so we decided to come here for lunch. The restaurant is centrally located in Insurgentes, and it's close two several main avenues. We arrived and we immediate seated at a large booth in the lower main dining room. The restaurant is quite expansive, and they have an entire section dedicated to cakes and pastry items. The cool part is the dining area on the second level which hassome dining tables situated on the balconies that overlook the lower dining room. I ordered chilaquiles de pollo platter that included a side order of frijoles, a cheese slice, and an avacado slice. My boyfriend ordered regular hotcakes and an order of chorros with chocolate sauce. For drinks, I got a horchata drink and he went for the Jamaica fruit drink. Our Server was on point, and brought out our orders in no time at all. The food was delicious, and the whole experience was great!

Yelp
Cute chain; it has that family style diner atmosphere. Clearly that's what they're aiming for. The food is alright but not spectacular. Servers are extremely attentive though, even during the weekend rush (note: La Casa de Los Abuelos locations are extremely popular for breakfast/brunch!)

Yelp
I rarely give a 1 as a rating but this place unfortunately deserved it today. I've been here before and have had good service but after today I'll never come back. First we killed two roaches on the table. Then after a long wait they messed up and put chicken in my enchilada-after saying more than once I only wanted cheese (I'm vegetarian). The food took long and they still forgot items.

Yelp
We were hungry and lazy and this was near our apartment, so... our server was nice, but the overall experience here was underwhelming. First, they serve no water, then they had no flautas, then they were out of something else. Food that was available was underwhelming, both the consommé de pollo and the enchiladas suiza. This place feels like it has seen better days, with an older decor, vibe, and clientele. In a city with so many great food options, you need not settle for mediocrity: head elsewhere.

Yelp
Worst service ever servers took about 25 min to come to our table after being seated! They portray to be a like home dining experience nothing Fargo that ! The Manager Cesar was rude and with an attitude and the employees was worse. I will not recommend this place !

Yelp
Worst treatment ever, none of the waiters would acknowledge us. It seems they only cater to people in suit and ties. I said F this place and go somewhere else. The staff bluntly refuse to provide us any attention or service....maldigo a la abuela.

Yelp
Food was terrible. I ordered the shrimp fettuccine they make it with a sweet sauce. My wife ordered a club sandwich with fries. The fries were extremely crispy and the sandwich didn't have any flavor. This was honestly the worst meal we had in Mexico, and we have been here for a month.

Carla C.

Yelp
Horrific service. Extremely long wait time, food is extremely mediocre. Simply go elsewhere.

Yelp
We just had our first disappointing food experience in over three weeks in Mexico City, in the location just across from the Museo de San Carlos. The waiters were inattentive even though we speak Spanish and we ordered two of the more expensive plates. My food arrived first and it was cold. I sent it back to be heated and they weren't clever enough to take the pork joint off and heat it separately, so it was still only lukewarm in the middle, and soon cold again. My chicken breast was dry. My wife's food took another five minutes after mine to arrive, and her chicken, shrimp and potatoes were also just lukewarm, barely warmer than her salad. We had to wave for attention to get knives and spoons. No-one ever asked us how we were doing and how the meal was, and we were ignored when we finished until we finally went to the cash register ourselves to pay the bill. No tip, obviously. The staff seemed to treat us with disdain and the cooks appeared to be incompetent. I'm sure my meal was pre-made and left sitting around until I got there to ask for it, and I'm still burping from it two hours after I got home. I hope I don't have food poisoning overnight.

Yelp
If you want pozole this is not the place to come. The pozole looks like a tomato soup with chicken. It's thick and not pozole consistency at all. its not a bad soup it's just not pozole. This is suppose to be a specialty as stated in their menu.

Yelp
This place has some of the best pan in Mexico City. If in Reforma, stop by and have some authentic pan.

Yelp
Delicious place for breakfast! Had the chocolate waffles. Would say that this is a staple of Mexico City. Highly recommend to anyone visiting!

Yelp
Ask for the Chile en Nogada..... Yummy and some pan dulce... Here on vacay... My sister had the chilakiles something good too and some coffee...

Yelp
Our first meal in DF paled compared to what came next. Just a local place with acceptable, though bland, food. Try La Casa del Toño instead.

Yelp
After reading the reviews we were very optimistic. We were staying close by and it was raining hard. So we wanted to stay close, but many dinner options here. Walking in we were pleased to see it was fairly busy for an early dinner on a Tuesday night. Decor is unique and cool. A very large main dining room with high ceilings. Play room upstairs for the kids with video screens so parents can watch while dining was a cool concept. Music videos played but tasteful and not too loud for good conversation. I ordered the pazole and green chicken enchiladas verde, my wife the chicken taquitos. Pazole was tasty, but arrived lukewarm, but was still OK. Waited and waited and then had to remind my server about my chicken enchiladas verse, after my wife had completed her meal. Chicken enchiladas were barely lukewarm and sauce was not very good at all, bland really. I wanted to like this place a lot, but the food and the service let us down.

Yelp
FOOD POISONING. My son ordered the chicken fajitas. He spent the whole night throwing up, with a fever. This restaurant chain does not value cleanliness. They share salsa bowls between tables. They share uneaten bread rolls between tables. The food was bland too. I ordered the pozole -- mostly tomato colored water with some soggy rice and chicken. No flavor. My other son ordered the breaded chicken tortas. He got a soggy sandwich with shredded chicken on it. I took a bite and had to spit it out. Disgusting.

Yelp
Definitely one of the BEST restaurants in the city! I love their food, I have tried their tacos de cochinita pibil, the pozole, the enchiladas verdes, their cafe lechero and their delicious desserts such as the tiramisu & cappuccino mini cake. On the second floor, they have a play room for the kids and a bakery that makes fresh desserts at all times.

Yelp
The food was good, nothing to special, But it was good enough. Where this restaurant truly shines is in the ambience, it feels so authentic, it is authentic. The place is big and well spaced, you'll feel very comfortable. The waitresses are polite and fast, I have no complaints, the eating experience was pleasant, when I'm hungry and just need a place to eat and chill, I'll defiantly come here. Just don't Order coffee, it's horrible, the most badly prepared and stale I have ever tasted

Yelp
We had pozole here along with another tlayuda. La Casa de Tonos was much better for the pozole. And regarding the tlayuda, I think I prefer mine off the street at the local markets. Each time I order them in restaurants they just don't taste as good!!

Webe B.

Yelp
This place sucks! Our food was serve cold. We ordered the chilaquiles with the meat was chewy and cold. The pancakes were stale like if they reheated them. The service starts very good but when we told our waitress about our food she said, it was too late for us to bring it up. She then tells next time we come to let them know sooner. We're tourist and was recommended this place but I would stay away. The place inside is really nice but the food is gross!

Yelp
Great food at a low price good pastries and coffee. Very friendly and clean been there two times in the last week!

Yelp
Im inlove with this classic mexican restaurant. The best waiter here is PATRICIA. She gave us awesome attention, she works like serving customers is rly her passion. Meanwhile food is great, try milanesa de abuela, arroz a la mexicana con platano and flan for dessert! i wish i live in df, meanwhile i will keep coming back here whenever i can!

Yelp
Solid restaurant offering basic Mexican fare at decent prices in Juarez. It's a big operation, but they offered efficient service and good food, would recommend.

Yelp
FOOD POISONING. My wife and son ordered the same plate and are suffering 36 hours of vomiting and diarrhea. BEWARE!!!

Gabe C.

Yelp
I have to question whether the food here is Mexican. The pozole was mostly broth, hardly any hominy or meat. The fajitas were pale they looked like they were steamed in the microwave. They had no seasoning at all. The quesadilla wasn't a quesadilla. It hardly had any cheese but the chorizo on it was tasty. They don't serve any alcohol, not even beer. I was very disappointed eating here.

Sandra D.

Yelp
Below average service and food. We were never greeted by server, just straight out asked what we wanted to order. No hello or drink order to start. No alcoholic beverages. Food was ok. I would not go back or recommend.

Yelp
this is the best restaurant in mexico city. because it has a beautiful ambiance for any type of seating. it is in a metropolitan area, so many professionals eat lunch here. but you can also come for a casual breakfast. the conchas and the cafe con leche are super fab. and everything on the menu is good. the spinach salad, the sopa de pollo, the eggs, and they make food to go. so if you are hungry and want to pick up great food for a great price, you can get it to go. i love casa de abuelos.
