Family-run and widely loved, this West Valley destination draws crowds for tamales, birria, and a towering molcajete. Lauded by Axios and City Weekly readers, it’s worth the short hop from downtown.

One of the best Mexican restaurants I’ve been to in the U.S.! The food is incredibly delicious, with a truly homemade touch. The sauces are amazing — especially the flavorful beef broth for dipping the tacos. I also tried tamales here for the first time that I actually really enjoyed! The service was impeccable. The place is clean, well-decorated, and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. If I had to mention one small suggestion, it would be about the background music — it was a bit loud and made conversation slightly difficult at our table, but that may have just been because we were seated close to a speaker. Overall, the restaurant, its team, and the family behind it are doing an outstanding job. I’ll definitely be coming back and recommending it to friends!

Google
The food was amazing! 5/5. I wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars the service was not there for me. The waitress we had disappeared on us. She was the worst I ever had. I should have gotten her name. Never asked how the food was or anything. We needed more chips for the salsa and guac and never received any. I had to ask another waiter to bring the check. I may be back one day, but one waitress messed up the whole experience for us.

Google
We had a short wait before being seated at the bar. The waitress was attentive but not overbearing. The food was very good, full of flavor and body, and looked equally appetizing. Watching the rest of the staff, we noted how well everything was run, how quickly tables were turned, and how efficiently things as a whole were operated. I would absolutely go back and will recommend this establishment to others in the future!

Google
Really excellent Birria tacos! The food here is really yummy and the atmosphere is fun too. It's a popular restaurant so if you are going on a weekend make sure to get there early or reserve a spot. We put ourselves on a wait-list and only waited 15-20 minutes. It was worth the wait.

We came with a large group to celebrate a birthday and had the best time! Our waiter (I believe his name is Alex?) was perfectly attentive without being overbearing and made the dining experience so pleasant for us all. He brought out the cutest birthday desert (tres leches cake) for our birthday girl which made it extra special. They do not do call ahead, seating is first come first serve but we were able to get seated fairly quickly even with a large group! It was a weekday and it was very busy so I would imagine on weekends you can expect a bit of a wait depending on when you arrive. Also the food must be mentioned— DELICIOUS. So good. And very generous portions easily shared if you wanted to — even the kids meal was a large quesadilla and a giant portion of fries which was perfect for a very picky (but hungry ) teenager in our group. Our group got fajitas, a parillada, shrimp tacos, Birria tacos, a pork quesadilla kids meal, steak queso taco, chips and guacamole (SO GOOD) and a few drinks and desert to share! There was food leftover and everyone loved what they ordered! This place is worth the drive— BUT we are definitely excited that they are opening a salt lake location that will be a bit more accessible to us!

Google
We LOVE this place. If you haven’t been here yet, you’re missing out. Karen, our server this time, was so great. The food is always fresh and delicious, and you really can’t go wrong with the birria tacos and the house made guac! We will continue to go back again and again.

Nice new Mexican restaurant in West Valley. Our favorites were the tamales & the cucumber lime margarita. Tamales we're delicious & generous; we would have liked to have the complimentary sauces (Mole poblano & Verde de Pollo) served with it, on the side. The Aquachile had WAY too much lime in it! Inedible for me, hubby dipped the shrimp in his water glass to "rinse" them before consuming. The Huarache was LARGE & I'd call it a Mexican pizza; essentially a layer of reddish sauce, beans, mozzarella & diced beef on Naan bread which was tough to cut, so we scooped it up with the chips. The Tacos de Birrea con Consome' was interesting; mozzarella & beef inside a thick reddish tortilla, when you order just 1 you just get a splash of the "dipping sauce" on the plate. Mozzarella was on/in many items here which changed the flavor of dishes for me. An unusual Mexican restaurant.

Google
I came here by recommendation of a coworker and need to say the tamales are as delicious as they are large...which is large, I underestimate the size and ordered 3 (chicken, cheese, and pork) with a side of beans and rice and was provided chips with various sauces for the table. Authentic flavors in each tamale with the right masa to filling ratio, not to much and not to dry with the right hit of spicy that can be enjoyed. Beans and rice are reminiscent of tex-mex flavor and ingredients...great spice with blend of corn and peas in rice. I wanted to try the menudo but was to full. The chips with dipping sauces are the perfect appetizer and are addictive. Wonderful atmosphere with exceptional staff and service. Reasonably priced 👍

Yelp
Food and portion sizes are great! The space is small though if you're claustrophobic it won't be your cup of tea. Other than that it is awesome and the service is top tier. Also very authentic .

Yelp
Amazing! By far the best Mexican food I've had in the US. Guac is amazing, drinks great., homemade salsas great, queso fundido delicious, but the carne asada parrillada was incredible (different than the platter). Can't believe I didn't have a tamal! Next time.
google avatar

Yelp
I've had this recommended to me several times but first time here. Patio seating. Love the decor. Shrimp Ceviche was so good! Only $9! I was shocked (see photo). The tamales are okay. I got the mole chicken one. The small individual taco (el pastor) was so yummy! Everyone raved about the food! Free chips & salsa. Very runny salsa (red, green, brown) and super spicy.

Yelp
I cannot believe I had not heard of this place! It was quite a delicious experience! The restaurant was packed but had nice vibes. The bar helps keep the attention focused on the important stuff: the food! The price is amazing and the flavor even better. Getting hungry while writing this!

Yelp
I went there last night--great food. Got back today--am visiting--ordered take out. Excited to pick up my beans and tamales. When I got my order asked for chips. Was told, sorry, only do that if you eat in. Very lame. Why ruin good food with such poor standards? You had me as a returning customer-- now you lost me.

Yelp
My amazing server Juan was right when he said "you're going to love this place." I absolutely did. Every bite had me thinking over and over "this is the best thing I've ever had" I love that they bring you chips and 3 salsas when you first sit down. I think the prices were really great, and I love that they give options on the menu for single items. I took advantage of this as I wanted to try as many different things as possible. This place is full at 3pm and for a reason. It is just so good. The music is fun but not too loud, and the decor is modern and minimal. I will be rushing back so my husband gets to try this place soon too.

Yelp
If you haven't tried La Casa Del Tamale you should. The food, the service, everything (but the parking) is amazing.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible food!! Nice atmosphere, good service - I highly recommend! The shrimp ceviche is the best I've ever had! Tamales and shrimp tacos are delicious!

Yelp
Coming here was an adventure... 15 to West something and my GPS felt unreliable. In a panic I got off the 80 West 5 miles too soon! I turned into the strip mall too soon so had to drive through a couple parking lots but then, there it was! ... and look at those lines!!! Saturday night dinner... I just drove 25 miles to get here I will not be deterred. The place is packed, I walk up to the reception and the two people weathering the waft of humanity grazing on the beautiful looking food turned to me with the most genuine smiles asking if they can be of help. I told them this is my first time and I'm trying to get this n the list. Since I was solo I got to sit right away at the bar! Boom! Two minutes, if that, chips and three different salsas! They were not an afterthought! They were just as elevated as I expected. I ordered a chicken mole poblano con pollo tamale and a Rojos de puerco tamale. Best I've ever had. The depth of the chocolate flavor in the mole is sincere and light. The texture is fresh. I fell in love. Pure authenticity. The pork tamale was very good too. But now, for the pieste de resistance ... the Birra Shredded Beef Tacos. This is my first time ever having Birra consume with anything... I've heard great things!!! One taco of four down and I can confirm the accolades are definitely true! Corn tortilla soaked in the Birra and grilled on the flat top, stuffed with shredded beef, onion, cilantro and melted cheese. The Birra is mild like it's the remnants of the beef from the cooking process. Perfect match.

Yelp
I've eaten at many Mexican restaurants in my day... a lot. Best Fajitas I have ever had! I was blown away! They were spiced exceptionally well, the meat was sliced so the seasoning was better distributed across the surface, and the killer was the cheese and sauce below the meat, melted and crispy on the skillet. Next level!!! So delicious. I've never had anything like it in Utah or Texas. Absolutely amazing. Rice and beans were the best I've ever had and I never comment on rice and beans. Food, out of this world! Service was fine, but we had to wait forever for our food. Ambiance was okay, restaurant is too small. Outside seating is better than inside.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Unfortunately I only photograph the Hibiscus margarita my food was just as good. Atmosphere was delightful with fine dining experience you forget your in West Valley.
google avatar

Marilyn C.

Yelp
We ordered food to go and it was ALL absolutely delicious! We had the flautas with rice and beans which was amazing. We also ordered a dozen tamales all different and all good! This will be my new GO TO! I'm lucky because this place is right in my own backyard!
google avatar

Greg L.

Yelp
The birria tacos and quesadillas are amazing! The staff is attentive and the restaurant is clean. Definitely worth trying if you love Mexican food.

Yelp
We came and they were not busy. We ordered and they brought us chips. 25 minutes later they checked in with us to see if we were "good"... as in can I get your check and some to go boxes.... I don't know about you but I usually expect to eat food when I go out to eat. When I mentioned that we haven't gotten any food yet she told me that they are out of salsa. Now I'm more confused as to why they brought us chips. Eventually they got around to getting us our food. The couple to the left of us came in ordered received their food and had a nice chat with the waitress long before our food came. Our waitress came back to ask us if we needed our water refilled as they were all empty. We said that we did especially since we still had not eaten yet. Our food finally came, it also came with salsa.... My wife did not like her food. It essentially fajitas with whole jalapeños. It was as if they got bored half way through preparing the meal and just threw the half way processed food in to the pan and served it without chopping everything up. I ordered the verde enchiladas. They were traditional and good. I also ordered an order of the tacos. They did a great job with the tacos too. The restaurant was loud and the torta that came to the table next to ours looked amazing.

Yelp
The reviews speak for themselves. This is my favorite SLC Mexican restaurant by a long shot. My wife and I have been here enough times to know that you can get anything off the menu and it will be great. The service is always extremely welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Can't go wrong with free chips and salsa for the table too. The restaurant itself is also very nicely decorated in an unexpectedly elegant way. There's absolutely nothing I can complain about other than there needs to be another location closer to Salt Lake!

Yelp
Delicious Mexican food. Everything we've had here is amazing and we drive from sandy to eat here.

Yelp
BEST BIRRIA TACOS IN UTAH?? Quite possibly! These tacos are larger than they look and are stuffed with deliciously seasoned meat and gooey cheese. The consume is so flavorful and the tortillas are perfectly pan-fried. This might be my new guilty pleasure dish. The flatuas were delicious! They are crispy-shell flautas, not soft. We definitely prefer soft, but the flavor was so good we didn't mind. I always appreciate complimentary chips and salsa and La Casa Del Tamal takes it to the next level with THREE salsa options. Each one delicious for different reasons. The service was fantastic. Our waitress was so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We were definitely in good hands. Every positive thing you've heard about La Casa Del Tamal is correct. It's as good as they say!
google avatar

Vanessa W.

Yelp
I get it, everyone comes for the Birria. It is good but everything on the menu is good! Branch out and try something else. I enjoy their tacos, tamales (honestly one of my favorites ever), Sopes and Flautas. The service is always good and efficient and the prices can't be beat! The downside, it gets busy so plan accordingly. It can be pretty loud inside. Also the front entrance is blocked by their hostess stand making it not passable by a wheelchair. I have to ask them to move it every time.

Yelp
My wife and I had planned just a short night out and were going to go somewhere like Panda Express to eat. However our neighbor mentioned La Casa Del Tamal, so we thought we would give it a shot . And WOW! I had no idea there was a legitimately good Mexican food restaurant in west valley. We started off with a couple tómales . The absolute best one was the sweet strawberry one. It tasted exactly like a strawberry shortcake. We then got the birria tacos, and carne asada with nopales. Everything tasted so great, though I think the birria tacos were better than the steak. To drink, we got horchata and their strawberry aguas. What was different about the strawberry is that they had milk mixed in it. So again, the best comparison I have is strawberry shortcake taste. So that, combined with the strawberry tamale was to die for. I would come back here for the sweet tamales alone. One thing to note however, is that it's actually kind of a pricey restaurant, but well worth it

Yelp
We just love this place! Today we needed to order for take out and were concerned about quality. No worries here. Perfect! Delicious as always!
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
Regularly a great experience I am a huge fan of their margarita with the tajin straw and I love their birria tacos! Make sure if you have a small appetite to order less. They fill you up so much! The ambiance is fun and a little loud which is perfect for a lovely Mexican restaurant. I am a huge fan also of their tamales!
google avatar

Kyle Joseph S.

Yelp
I've been here at least 5 times. Service is quick and efficient. It is clean and lively inside. Food is *excellent*. It is worth a drive to come here. Tacos de birria are amazing. Enchiladas are great. Authentic tamales.
google avatar

P J.

Yelp
Absolutely live this place. Food is delicious, service is great. Facility is always clean. Music choice is amazing. Must try.
google avatar

Yelp
I come here at least twice per month. Love the tamales and birria tacos! The service is amazing and their variety of salsa is fantastic. Highly recommend and I guarantee you'll love it! Gracias amigos!
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Came to dine here with one of my best friends for a quick dinner. Our waiter was very tentative, and the inside vibes of the restaurant was very nice! We started off with the aguachile, oh man it was spicy! But it was an addicting spicy and we enjoyed that dish as an appetizer. It was so yummy! I got the carne asada plate, wow the meat was tender and juicy and with the rice and frijoles was perfect. Sometimes when you go to other restaurants and order carne asada plates they can come out dry, but not this place! Very yummy and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Sharlene J.

Yelp
I went here for lunch today with friends and had the coctel mix which has shrimp and squid and it was so delicious! The service was excellent. We all really enjoyed our food. My friends shared the guacamole appetizer and said it was really good also. I'll definitely go back for the coctel mix again! It was clean even though it was busy.
google avatar

Doug M.

Yelp
I still love their birria tacos the best. I also love ordering their tamales for family events. Got a torta once and it was also good. The only thing I don't like here is their complementary table salsa which comes with the chips - it's not great. We always ask for their two additional salsas which they normally don't mention unless you know to ask.
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
Food is great and nice restaurant! Service is good! The Mocajate was yummy! Will go again.
google avatar

Jose T.

Yelp
Always coming here, delicious food options. Probably my favorite Mexican restaurant. I typically get the quesabirria. The fajitas are so good though and I highly recommend. Go to Azucar next door after for a coffee too ‍
google avatar

Yelp
Holy cow.. that was seriously the best Mexican dining experience I've ever had! We came on a Sat night around 7:30 and waited about 30 mins for a table. The place was hopping and doing a robust carry out business as well. They brought out chips and salsa....and the salsa had a kick to it which I like. No local, craft or IPA's here....just pure Mexican cervezas. We ordered the guacamole as a starter (family size by accident)....and it was really good. My bride ordered the Quesa Tacos with chicken and she loved it! I went with the Tacos de Birria con Consome and it was outstanding! Service from Juan was super friendly and prompt. We wished we lived in SLC area to come here often :)
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
We went to this restaurant for our anniversary. We ordered a side of guacamole to go with the chips. The waitress was very helpful explaining the menu. I thought I knew Mexican food! I got shrimp tacos. They were so good. I recommend this place.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
Dining alone, I tried a single birria taco, a chicken mole tamale, and the shrimp tostada. I was so disappointed that the birria did not come with consommé and that the taco itself had no flavor even though the birria was quite tender. The chicken mole was good--tender tamale, though the chicken was a tad dry and the mole was tasty and a little black pudding-like. The shrimp tostada was fresh with red onion, avocado, and cucumber, and a tad zingy. The shrimp was pretty good and well-marinated. The chips and salsa were great. The salsa trio came with one spicy green chile, one tomato salsa without any spice, and a very smoky third tomato-based sauce.

Cynthia L.

Yelp
We loved all the food here in this clean, modern Mexican restaurant in West Valley. We started with their delicious fresh tortilla chips with traditional margaritas. Tim chose a lamb taco that he said was the best of everything we ordered. I ordered one green chile chicken tamale as I wanted to find a tamale I liked because I haven't before. It was delicious with the perfect amount of corn meal wrapping the flavorful chicken and green chile filling. We finished with beef birria tacos with rice and beans which we had to take home because it was all so filling. Thanks for the recommendation Em!
google avatar

Aaron O.

Yelp
Awesome place for authentic Mexican food. Family and I walked in and noticed the seating appeared a bit more upscale then expected. The background music plays Mexican music which is the first good sign. We are quickly seated and the service is friendly and fast--what more could you ask for? They make the tortillas fresh which always a great sign. Salsas are versatile and spicy. Meats are well seasoned and rice is cooked to perfection. This place is a home run. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
google avatar

Cindy R.

Yelp
The service was excellent today. The mole was pretty tasty. Portions were good and temps were excellent. The lamb tacos were tasty. The kids loved their quesadillas. This visit was definitely much improved!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this place. I've been going ever since they started off with their food truck! Yes, I am biased about their birria tacos. I think they're delicious, but they are starting to follow inflation and get more pricey. Fair warning, they are super messy but worth it! I've tried their tamales, chips and salsa, along with a few other things and they don't disappoint! The ambiance and service is nice. I've personally never had a bad service experience. They've always been super kind, personable and attentive. Overall, highly recommend this place! I've already introduced many others here.

Julia A.

Yelp
Came to Utah for vacation and came across this restaurant. My expectations were completely blown away. The staff, food, and look of the place is just wow! I would highly recommend this place to anyone living in or visiting Salt Lake.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Great flavor, definitely worth the money. It's hard to find good Mexican and this was impressive. Chicken tamale was flavorful, not dry, and the beef tacos were very good. Even the guacamole was fresh and delicious. You need to try this place!

Paul L.

Yelp
The tamales and enchiladas were delicious and the masa for the tamales is the best I have ever had. It was pretty busy but our waiter Sebastian was great and took great care of us. The Hibiscus water was sweet and delicious too. Multiple kinds of salsa that were great with just the right amount of kick. If you don't like spicy I am sure they have options but I wasn't interested. We will be back soon!
google avatar

Connie G.

Yelp
This place is consistent with their food and service. My go to is a huarache because I know I'll have food for days! Their micheladas as yummy! My husband usually orders the camarones a la Diabla and their spicy and flavorful and of course the hand made tortillas are a must. Went on Friday decided to try their hibiscus margarita and it was yummy! The place was pretty busy and there was plenty of people celebrating their bday and they seem to give a cute slice of cake and a cool candle. This always a safe choice!
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Wow! This was such a find! The inside is decorated so cute and is so welcoming. We sat at the bar area (which looks/felt like it was an old sushi bar) and ate there. Their drinks were really well done and had great flavor. We didn't see a traditional margarita on the menu but I'm sure it can be ordered. Chips and salsa were great - always love a good appetizer. The Tacos de Birria con Consome - just wow wow! Absolutely delicious. 4 tacos was kind of a lot for 1 person because of how big they are but I devoured them.
google avatar

Connor A.

Yelp
AMAZING! Everything about this place was fantastic. Possibly the best Mexican birria tacos in all the land. The tamales were good but were definitely outshined by those incredible tacos. Seriously so good. The service was also incredible. Our waiter was awesome and super friendly. He answered all our questions with haste and a smile. The ambiance was very fun and lively. Expect a short wait on a weekend night, but WORTH IT. The atmosphere was overall just energizing. Don't miss this place!

Gins T.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, food was good and reasonably priced. I didn't like any of the salsas, they tasted like dirty dishwater. I would go back and enjoyed the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent fajitas. I fully recommend. The service was very quick for the lunch hours.
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch, and the place was packed! So I knew we were probably in for a decent meal. We had to wait about 10 minutes but once seated the service was great. Our server promptly came to take our order and brought us table chips and salsa. We ordered guac, which was great. I was pleased to find huitlacoche on the menu, and ordered it as filling in a quesadilla. The quesadilla was great, and big, but the tortilla was a little hard to cut through/chew (maybe a little thick). Someone in my party ordered tacos and they looked a little dry as well. Given how busy the kitchen was, I expected fast, convenient, and generally tasty food -- which is exactly what we got. My only deduction is that the menu didn't feature a lot of plant-based options, and only 4 entrees available (all meat) came with rice and beans. They also only had soda, cocktails, and water to drink (e.g., no iced tea, no bubbly water). Thankful for the huitlacoche option on the menu.
google avatar

Melanie V.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended by a coworker and it did not disappoint! Super fun space with a kind wait staff in addition to the delish food. Unfortunately I don't like cilantro so I was a bit limited from the waitresses favorite but the floutas were awesome. Crispy, juicy, and very filling for a good price. I'm a sucker for refried beans so that was a must and they were great. Had to try the tamale and got the poblano with mole which was solid. They are very large tamales and could have used some salsa but very good. Lastly the Margarita had fresh mango and was very refreshing. I dropped a star because there were several open seats however we had to wait a bit... then when we got seated it took a while for the server to approach. I think because we were in the corner... anyway, the tables remained empty throughout the dinner which was odd and our waitress came to take our order, deliver the food, and check. Would have liked another check in for some hot sauce but I powered through. I look forward to returning in the future to try other dishes!

Aranza M.

Yelp
I have came to dine since they first open and it's still such an amazing place to be at every single time. They have amazing service, they are very patient and make you feel right at home with amazing mini conversations the whole time. The food is delicious i've tried various food and each time it's very flavorful and well presented. It is a little pricey but the experience definitely makes up for it. After become a bit more popular they did have some renovations making it a little more modern definitely liked it a little more before but it's still has a warm feeling especially dining closer to the sunset, very nice place!!

Katie W.

Yelp
Tacos were so good! Got their signature birria tacos and they were delicious. Also got a pork and steak taco, all were very good and would recommend.
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Service is nice, quick. We came before a concert and were seated immediately. Salsa and chips are awesome. Very tasty and with a nice kick that isn't overpowering. Nice selection of signature drinks- mango margarita and the Cucumber lime was delicious. They were kinda thick but super yummy! Bummed there isn't Shredded beef Enchiladas on the menu but the Birria Tacos made up for it. The 4 Birria Tacos is a lot of food. On our second visit I got one with some rice and beans and it was perfect. Highly recommend this place. The food and servic is delicious!
