Family-run and widely loved, this West Valley destination draws crowds for tamales, birria, and a towering molcajete. Lauded by Axios and City Weekly readers, it’s worth the short hop from downtown.

Incredible place. Wow. We drove across the valley to try it out, per my friend's recommendation and it did not disappoint. The best carne asada I've ever had. So tender and the seasoning incredible. Fun atmosphere. Unique food options. Chips and salsa delicious, guacamole amazing, and our server Maricela was a blast. She was so much fun and allowed us to speak our poor Spanish with her. Excited to return!

Google
Service- Amazing! Ambiance- Beautiful! Price-Reasonable Food- Authentic, with many flavors, everything cooked to perfection! Ordered- Tamales-cheese and chicken, Shrimp Tacos, and Parriyada. We are so happy we found this place! Cant wait to come back!

We knew it must be good because it was PACKED like sardines in there. Got our order to go and it was ready before we got our dessert in the next parking lot over! The rice was the best rice I've ever had at a restaurant and everything was fresh, fresh, fresh. Will be back next time we're in town!!! Also loved how they packed the to go order like they really cared. Awesome place 😎

Google
Honestly I was very impressed with our experience! The staff was very polite, and prompt. Every facet was well orchestrated. My wife and I ordered two cocktails that were absolutely beautiful. A few minutes later our main dishes arrived, no detail missed, with an amazing presentation. We're excited to come back. Thank you!

Google
The food was amazing! 5/5. I wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars the service was not there for me. The waitress we had disappeared on us. She was the worst I ever had. I should have gotten her name. Never asked how the food was or anything. We needed more chips for the salsa and guac and never received any. I had to ask another waiter to bring the check. I may be back one day, but one waitress messed up the whole experience for us.

Google
UNREAL! Best food I’ve eaten to this date. I get the big bowl they offer and cannot get enough! This family owned company has amazing food!

Google
Great atmosphere, beautiful food, so little flavor. Maybe I'm not the target audience because I like salt and seasoned meats. Without either of those the food fell flat for me. It looked amazing. Just didn't taste that way. The waiting area is very small, consider waiting on your car. Once inside it's delightful. Service was good even when it was very busy.

Google
A favorite amongst our friends. We’ve come here repeatedly and have a great experience every time. The service is top tier. The server we just had last night was very polite and kind. The surrounding staff are also very welcoming and helpful. This place was extremely busy around 6pm on a Friday, took about 30 minutes to get seated. My favorite here is definitely the Tacos de Birria con Consume. They are great flavor and very filling. I like being able to split it with my boyfriend and still feeling satisfied for the night. We love their house made horchata, salsa, and guac. I tried the tamales last night, which I thought were going to be fantastic because of the restaurant name. I found the tamales to be very disappointing and I stupidly ordered 12 of them because I adore everything else they serve. The tamales were very dry and crumbled apart. The Mole tamale wasn’t at all wet like expected. The Rojo con Puerco was okay in flavor but very little meat and also dry. I will still come back, but I will not order the tamales again. I like the ones the ladies in Walmart lots sell more since they have more meat, sauce and flavor. Their Birria Tacos are still a winner.

Yelp
I am just going to say it. This is the best Mexican food restaurant in Salt Lake City! I have many favorites and this one I have been meaning to try for awhile. Well shoot! Once the word get out this place will need a bigger location! The service was excellent and they provide 3 salsas for free with the most excellent chips as you decide on your dinner entre. We went all out and tried the tamales as an appetizer and then the tacos and signature molcajete. Wow so good, the meat and cheese sauce was so good I'm already craving another trip! Seriously, what are you waiting for? Go check this place out!

Yelp
Amazing! By far the best Mexican food I've had in the US. Guac is amazing, drinks great., homemade salsas great, queso fundido delicious, but the carne asada parrillada was incredible (different than the platter). Can't believe I didn't have a tamal! Next time.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite places for Mexican food. The ambiance is pretty authentic and the photo is right on point. The birra tacos is a must have. Service was great, very attentive. I recommend reservation if a group of more than 4 people.

Yelp
I had a wonderful date night here the staff were friendly and attentive, they filled our drinks in a timely manner and seemed genuinely happy to be at work , the tacos were amazing ! Perfectly cooked meat , evenly spread topping and the house made salsa was sooo good
google avatar

Holly A.

Yelp
Really good food. I highly recommend the birria tacos and flautas. The ingredients they use are so fresh and vibrant.

Yelp
I've had this recommended to me several times but first time here. Patio seating. Love the decor. Shrimp Ceviche was so good! Only $9! I was shocked (see photo). The tamales are okay. I got the mole chicken one. The small individual taco (el pastor) was so yummy! Everyone raved about the food! Free chips & salsa. Very runny salsa (red, green, brown) and super spicy.
google avatar

Jason N.

Yelp
Maybe my current favorite Mexican restaurant. I love that right off the bat they bring you chips and three salsas. All of the salsas are great and unique! I've had the carne asada plate and the Huarache. Both were super delicious and large quantities. I left stuffed. Service has always been quick and friendly. The environment is welcoming and I dig that they use cloth napkins. I can't wait to come back and try more of the menu.
google avatar

Ivey G.

Yelp
My amazing server Juan was right when he said "you're going to love this place." I absolutely did. Every bite had me thinking over and over "this is the best thing I've ever had" I love that they bring you chips and 3 salsas when you first sit down. I think the prices were really great, and I love that they give options on the menu for single items. I took advantage of this as I wanted to try as many different things as possible. This place is full at 3pm and for a reason. It is just so good. The music is fun but not too loud, and the decor is modern and minimal. I will be rushing back so my husband gets to try this place soon too.

Yelp
Placed my order yesterday & paid in advance the day before, Take-out order pickup w/ date & time. On the day of pick I called-in to confirm my order. But when I arrived on time, my order food is not ready. I waited more than 40mins. No apologies & no explanation. 3rd time on very bad experience take-out food ordering in advance. Other customers have the same experience. Unsatisfactory order take-out service. Definitely needs improvement.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best Mexican food you will have. Started with a great grapefruit Paloma and chips and salsa. Excellent chips with 3 salsa. Ordered a small quac and boy was that good. Fish tacos were perfect and the rice and beans were the best I have ever had. Was alone so sat at the counter. Service was quick and very good. I will come back next trip to SLC.

Yelp
Coming here was an adventure... 15 to West something and my GPS felt unreliable. In a panic I got off the 80 West 5 miles too soon! I turned into the strip mall too soon so had to drive through a couple parking lots but then, there it was! ... and look at those lines!!! Saturday night dinner... I just drove 25 miles to get here I will not be deterred. The place is packed, I walk up to the reception and the two people weathering the waft of humanity grazing on the beautiful looking food turned to me with the most genuine smiles asking if they can be of help. I told them this is my first time and I'm trying to get this n the list. Since I was solo I got to sit right away at the bar! Boom! Two minutes, if that, chips and three different salsas! They were not an afterthought! They were just as elevated as I expected. I ordered a chicken mole poblano con pollo tamale and a Rojos de puerco tamale. Best I've ever had. The depth of the chocolate flavor in the mole is sincere and light. The texture is fresh. I fell in love. Pure authenticity. The pork tamale was very good too. But now, for the pieste de resistance ... the Birra Shredded Beef Tacos. This is my first time ever having Birra consume with anything... I've heard great things!!! One taco of four down and I can confirm the accolades are definitely true! Corn tortilla soaked in the Birra and grilled on the flat top, stuffed with shredded beef, onion, cilantro and melted cheese. The Birra is mild like it's the remnants of the beef from the cooking process. Perfect match.

Yelp
I cannot believe I had not heard of this place! It was quite a delicious experience! The restaurant was packed but had nice vibes. The bar helps keep the attention focused on the important stuff: the food! The price is amazing and the flavor even better. Getting hungry while writing this!

Yelp
Food was great, service was great, the ambiance was packed and pleasant. Somehow we were there when 3 groups had happy birthday sang to them, and no wonder why! La casa del Tamal does it all right
google avatar

Loren H.

Yelp
The Tamales here is the bomb. It is flavored well, masa is so moist it almost just melts in your mouth. Not spicy at all for those that don't eat spicy food like myself. The Jamaica drink was also Ono. Our waitress was very attentive and gave us good service. I recommend this place for a good Mexicano food. Aloha
google avatar

Curtis O.

Yelp
Their food is so good. We travel from the south end of the valley to go here. The beans are great, I'm confused by the peas and carrots in the rice though. The tacos are amazing make sure to get the consume on the side.

Brent J.

Yelp
I cannot rate this restaurant. I went there, but it was a hour wait So went across the street to another restaurant

Jerry O.

Yelp
Good find. This place was busy and we enjoyed it. We were planning our next visit before we even finished the meal.

Yelp
I've eaten at many Mexican restaurants in my day... a lot. Best Fajitas I have ever had! I was blown away! They were spiced exceptionally well, the meat was sliced so the seasoning was better distributed across the surface, and the killer was the cheese and sauce below the meat, melted and crispy on the skillet. Next level!!! So delicious. I've never had anything like it in Utah or Texas. Absolutely amazing. Rice and beans were the best I've ever had and I never comment on rice and beans. Food, out of this world! Service was fine, but we had to wait forever for our food. Ambiance was okay, restaurant is too small. Outside seating is better than inside.

Anne M.

Yelp
Very nice busy restaurant. We were greeted warmly and the hostess took our name and telephone number for recall when a table was ready. We were seated immediately upon being called and our waiter came right over. The entire staff works like a well oiled machine, helping each other moving swiftly about. The food was amazing and authentic. I had Caldo de Res and it was just like my grandma used to make. My husband had shrimp fajitas and there were so many (I mean a lot) of large shrimp he said it was so delicious. A great overall experience
google avatar

Bekah C.

Yelp
BEST BIRRIA TACOS IN UTAH?? Quite possibly! These tacos are larger than they look and are stuffed with deliciously seasoned meat and gooey cheese. The consume is so flavorful and the tortillas are perfectly pan-fried. This might be my new guilty pleasure dish. The flatuas were delicious! They are crispy-shell flautas, not soft. We definitely prefer soft, but the flavor was so good we didn't mind. I always appreciate complimentary chips and salsa and La Casa Del Tamal takes it to the next level with THREE salsa options. Each one delicious for different reasons. The service was fantastic. Our waitress was so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We were definitely in good hands. Every positive thing you've heard about La Casa Del Tamal is correct. It's as good as they say!

Yelp
We came and they were not busy. We ordered and they brought us chips. 25 minutes later they checked in with us to see if we were "good"... as in can I get your check and some to go boxes.... I don't know about you but I usually expect to eat food when I go out to eat. When I mentioned that we haven't gotten any food yet she told me that they are out of salsa. Now I'm more confused as to why they brought us chips. Eventually they got around to getting us our food. The couple to the left of us came in ordered received their food and had a nice chat with the waitress long before our food came. Our waitress came back to ask us if we needed our water refilled as they were all empty. We said that we did especially since we still had not eaten yet. Our food finally came, it also came with salsa.... My wife did not like her food. It essentially fajitas with whole jalapeños. It was as if they got bored half way through preparing the meal and just threw the half way processed food in to the pan and served it without chopping everything up. I ordered the verde enchiladas. They were traditional and good. I also ordered an order of the tacos. They did a great job with the tacos too. The restaurant was loud and the torta that came to the table next to ours looked amazing.

Jeff J.

Yelp
I went there last night--great food. Got back today--am visiting--ordered take out. Excited to pick up my beans and tamales. When I got my order asked for chips. Was told, sorry, only do that if you eat in. Very lame. Why ruin good food with such poor standards? You had me as a returning customer-- now you lost me.

Yelp
The reviews speak for themselves. This is my favorite SLC Mexican restaurant by a long shot. My wife and I have been here enough times to know that you can get anything off the menu and it will be great. The service is always extremely welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Can't go wrong with free chips and salsa for the table too. The restaurant itself is also very nicely decorated in an unexpectedly elegant way. There's absolutely nothing I can complain about other than there needs to be another location closer to Salt Lake!
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Unfortunately I only photograph the Hibiscus margarita my food was just as good. Atmosphere was delightful with fine dining experience you forget your in West Valley.
google avatar

Vanessa W.

Yelp
I get it, everyone comes for the Birria. It is good but everything on the menu is good! Branch out and try something else. I enjoy their tacos, tamales (honestly one of my favorites ever), Sopes and Flautas. The service is always good and efficient and the prices can't be beat! The downside, it gets busy so plan accordingly. It can be pretty loud inside. Also the front entrance is blocked by their hostess stand making it not passable by a wheelchair. I have to ask them to move it every time.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
My wife and I had planned just a short night out and were going to go somewhere like Panda Express to eat. However our neighbor mentioned La Casa Del Tamal, so we thought we would give it a shot . And WOW! I had no idea there was a legitimately good Mexican food restaurant in west valley. We started off with a couple tómales . The absolute best one was the sweet strawberry one. It tasted exactly like a strawberry shortcake. We then got the birria tacos, and carne asada with nopales. Everything tasted so great, though I think the birria tacos were better than the steak. To drink, we got horchata and their strawberry aguas. What was different about the strawberry is that they had milk mixed in it. So again, the best comparison I have is strawberry shortcake taste. So that, combined with the strawberry tamale was to die for. I would come back here for the sweet tamales alone. One thing to note however, is that it's actually kind of a pricey restaurant, but well worth it
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
Regularly a great experience I am a huge fan of their margarita with the tajin straw and I love their birria tacos! Make sure if you have a small appetite to order less. They fill you up so much! The ambiance is fun and a little loud which is perfect for a lovely Mexican restaurant. I am a huge fan also of their tamales!
google avatar

Jon C.

Yelp
We just love this place! Today we needed to order for take out and were concerned about quality. No worries here. Perfect! Delicious as always!
google avatar

Joyce C.

Yelp
If you haven't tried La Casa Del Tamale you should. The food, the service, everything (but the parking) is amazing.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Came to dine here with one of my best friends for a quick dinner. Our waiter was very tentative, and the inside vibes of the restaurant was very nice! We started off with the aguachile, oh man it was spicy! But it was an addicting spicy and we enjoyed that dish as an appetizer. It was so yummy! I got the carne asada plate, wow the meat was tender and juicy and with the rice and frijoles was perfect. Sometimes when you go to other restaurants and order carne asada plates they can come out dry, but not this place! Very yummy and I will definitely be back!

Maddie K.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! The Piña Tamal is incredible, and their quesadillas are always perfectly made. Definitely a must-try!
google avatar

Gil

Yelp
A good place to enjoy some variety and tasting food. A fine selection of food on their menu.
google avatar

Doug M.

Yelp
I still love their birria tacos the best. I also love ordering their tamales for family events. Got a torta once and it was also good. The only thing I don't like here is their complementary table salsa which comes with the chips - it's not great. We always ask for their two additional salsas which they normally don't mention unless you know to ask.
google avatar

Michele T.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible food!! Nice atmosphere, good service - I highly recommend! The shrimp ceviche is the best I've ever had! Tamales and shrimp tacos are delicious!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Holy cow.. that was seriously the best Mexican dining experience I've ever had! We came on a Sat night around 7:30 and waited about 30 mins for a table. The place was hopping and doing a robust carry out business as well. They brought out chips and salsa....and the salsa had a kick to it which I like. No local, craft or IPA's here....just pure Mexican cervezas. We ordered the guacamole as a starter (family size by accident)....and it was really good. My bride ordered the Quesa Tacos with chicken and she loved it! I went with the Tacos de Birria con Consome and it was outstanding! Service from Juan was super friendly and prompt. We wished we lived in SLC area to come here often :)

Jeff M.

Yelp
If you are from Los Angeles - think "Panchos" in Manhattan Beach for downstairs ambiance and customer service. Three types of salsas appear to be custom made and each a very distinct taste (guac, slightly fruity, and mild chili - yum - and the salt on the chips is amount the perfect amount). I had carne asada with a rich tasty queso and beans and rice. My only "beef" (lol) is that the corn tortillas did seem a bit off the shelf (not like Old Town Mexican Cafe in San Diego) but the service, lighting, kid-friendly, family friendly, fun date at the bar - or a boring business dinner with your co-workers seems great for a weeknight, plenty of parking and no perceived long wait. I would call to see wait time if any. Highly recommended!
google avatar

P J.

Yelp
Absolutely live this place. Food is delicious, service is great. Facility is always clean. Music choice is amazing. Must try.
google avatar

Aaron O.

Yelp
Awesome place for authentic Mexican food. Family and I walked in and noticed the seating appeared a bit more upscale then expected. The background music plays Mexican music which is the first good sign. We are quickly seated and the service is friendly and fast--what more could you ask for? They make the tortillas fresh which always a great sign. Salsas are versatile and spicy. Meats are well seasoned and rice is cooked to perfection. This place is a home run. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
google avatar

Marilyn C.

Yelp
We ordered food to go and it was ALL absolutely delicious! We had the flautas with rice and beans which was amazing. We also ordered a dozen tamales all different and all good! This will be my new GO TO! I'm lucky because this place is right in my own backyard!
google avatar

Greg L.

Yelp
The birria tacos and quesadillas are amazing! The staff is attentive and the restaurant is clean. Definitely worth trying if you love Mexican food.
google avatar

Jose T.

Yelp
Always coming here, delicious food options. Probably my favorite Mexican restaurant. I typically get the quesabirria. The fajitas are so good though and I highly recommend. Go to Azucar next door after for a coffee too ‍
google avatar

Deidra R.

Yelp
Delicious Mexican food. Everything we've had here is amazing and we drive from sandy to eat here.
google avatar

Kyle Joseph S.

Yelp
I've been here at least 5 times. Service is quick and efficient. It is clean and lively inside. Food is *excellent*. It is worth a drive to come here. Tacos de birria are amazing. Enchiladas are great. Authentic tamales.
google avatar

G A.

Yelp
I come here at least twice per month. Love the tamales and birria tacos! The service is amazing and their variety of salsa is fantastic. Highly recommend and I guarantee you'll love it! Gracias amigos!
google avatar

Cindy R.

Yelp
The service was excellent today. The mole was pretty tasty. Portions were good and temps were excellent. The lamb tacos were tasty. The kids loved their quesadillas. This visit was definitely much improved!
google avatar

Connie G.

Yelp
This place is consistent with their food and service. My go to is a huarache because I know I'll have food for days! Their micheladas as yummy! My husband usually orders the camarones a la Diabla and their spicy and flavorful and of course the hand made tortillas are a must. Went on Friday decided to try their hibiscus margarita and it was yummy! The place was pretty busy and there was plenty of people celebrating their bday and they seem to give a cute slice of cake and a cool candle. This always a safe choice!

Terri L.

Yelp
Four of us - three of us felt the food was bland. I ordered the quesadilla. It was luke warm when served and the cheese hadn't melted. And it was rather bland. My husband ordered shrimp tacos and he felt those were the best he had ever had. Chips and salsa was good, service was great. Food balnd - I will not go back.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
We went to this restaurant for our anniversary. We ordered a side of guacamole to go with the chips. The waitress was very helpful explaining the menu. I thought I knew Mexican food! I got shrimp tacos. They were so good. I recommend this place.
google avatar

Connor A.

Yelp
AMAZING! Everything about this place was fantastic. Possibly the best Mexican birria tacos in all the land. The tamales were good but were definitely outshined by those incredible tacos. Seriously so good. The service was also incredible. Our waiter was awesome and super friendly. He answered all our questions with haste and a smile. The ambiance was very fun and lively. Expect a short wait on a weekend night, but WORTH IT. The atmosphere was overall just energizing. Don't miss this place!
