5 Meals For A Fiver: Finsbury Park - London - The Infatuation

"Often filled with locals inside, hovering and joking by the doorway, or outside moped helmet in one hand and a hefty baguette in the other, La Casbah is a little Mediterranean cafe that encapsulates Blackstock Road’s energy. The most popular menu choice is a beef mince baguette, fried within an inch of its life on the hot plate, with an egg cracked in, before being mixed together with chips and chunks of onion, all stuffed into a soft baguette liberally spread with Tunisian harissa paste and mayo. It’s a big boy. But it’s the merguez you want. The spicy sausage has a much better punch of flavour, plus sausage and chips in a sandwich is always, always, a winner." - jake missing

I had been looking forward to my reservation for a while, and so I suppose my expectations were a bit high. Overall, the place was… fine? The food was good but nothing I haven’t eaten or tasted before. The cocktails were mediocre too. Overall it was all okay, but certainly not worth such a high price or so much hype. And you are definitely not missing out. I was also disappointed about how impossible it is to contact the restaurant. They never pick up the phone, nor answer texts on instagram, but their reservation portal will definitely threaten you with charging full amount for any no-shows (its totally okay to do that, but you have to be reachable by phone/message etc.)

Great venue, beautiful vaulted ceilings with lots of space. Very tasty food, excellent bread, though portions are on the smaller side. Seating area full of lamps, a wall covered in maps; very busy on a Friday evening. After dinner you can head downstairs, where a DJ is playing. Many young people, though the dance floor is a bit inconvenient due to the many pillars. Cocktails are unreasonably overpriced (fixed at €14). On top of that, they don’t use fresh fruit but rely on pre-made syrups that completely ruin the taste. I tried a house-recommended mango creation, which-lacking fresh ingredients-was an extreme disappointment and unfortunately undrinkable. I asked for a replacement drink, which also fell far short of expectations. Instead of responding as a good host would, my complaint was brushed aside, and I ended up being charged twice for bad and undrinkable cocktails—almost €30 in total. With that money, I could nearly open my own bar. Perhaps it’s best to stick with wine/beer at this place.

The staff was so so nice. I came with a big group for my birthday. From the bouncer and hostess all the way to bartender and even the big boss…. Super super nice, the DJ was on absolute fire and we danced all night. Highly recommend! Thank you.
