The Best Coffee Shops in Dallas | Eater Dallas

"One of the greatest destinations for book lovers in Dallas now sports a spiffy coffee shop. La Casita, which is beloved for its pastries has opened a coffee shop and pastry counter inside this massive bookstore. The menu of coffee and non-coffee drinks is long and includes seasonal coffees." - Courtney E. Smith

This is my friend's go-to brunch spot, and it never disappoints! Their matcha is delicious, and they always keep the pastry menu interesting with new flavors each month. Although the space is small and easy to appear packed, they are decently fast with their service.

Google
I have enjoyed breakfast, brunch and afternoon coffee at the HPB La Casita location several times and it’s become my go-to meeting spot for friend time, working and my coffee-journal time! I love the ‘Turkish Spice’ that’s used in several drinks. They aren’t just a cafe. They have full delicious meals for brunch and lunch, plus an amazing menu of pastries. Unlike most book-adjacent-caffeine businesses there’s also a full bar. I recommend the Bloody Mary pre/post pancakes.

Half Price Books is one of my favorite spots in Dallas and I used to love the La Casita location in Richardson for delicious baked goods on weekends, so I was very happy to have them open up a cafe/bar/restaurant at HPB Dallas! I’ve gone here several times and love their coffee drinks and seasonal drink menu. For their spring menu, I got a ginger mint matcha latte, which was very unique and delicious. In the past, I’ve also enjoyed their cafe de olla, breakfast plate, and Nashville hot chicken sandwich, which are all delicious. Prices are definitely on the pricier side compared to most other cafes, but that’s okay. Ambience is great for meeting up with a friend or WFH. You can work inside the cafe, but that means you’d be “dining in” or have the option to get food and drinks to-go and sit in the HPB area. I’ve enjoyed both options. Loved having Meghan as our waiter and she is amazing! 🤍

Amazing. They serve inspired culinary treasures here. The bread just might steal the show. The fish tacos were delightful.

The atmosphere here is great! The service absolutely amazing, I’ve gone here a couple of times s as my daughter loves half price, so it’s a win win. I know Casita from the first location and I love it, but that location is always super busy and kind of loud, very different from this location, don’t get me wrong I love both, but prefer this one. It’s more lay back and calm, I guess because the bookstore vibe… IDK but I really love it. Today was special… same great service, but the young lady that took care of us (same as last time) was super nice! She went above and beyond and just made my day, sadly I didn’t get her name, but planning to go back soon as I need another key lime passion fruit pie and it’s only available to month!! Thanks again for your special treatment!!! It really made my day!

This is a small bar and coffee shop adjacent to the half price books. It opens directly into half price books and has similar hours I believe. They serve some small snacks and also have drinks, and coffee, and places to sit and relax. It also has an external door that opens the parking lot.

This little cafe was absolutely amazing! The service and vibe is top notch and the food was so delicious. I drank an iced caramel latte and it was the best I have had. I ate the crispy potato sandwich and it was so good. My kids just had an English muffin and eggs. Everything was fresh and the staff were so friendly. Can’t wait to go back. I even enjoyed going next door to half price books.

Google
Came to check out Half Price Books, but fell for La Casita! Super cute bar set up. Friendliest staff ever. So helpful and friendly. The pastries looked amazing, but only had room for tea. Loved the iced option. Perfect for a stroll around shopping for books. Such unique cups to minimize the need for plastic tops. And the tea was so tasty. This place is just wonderful!

Yelp
I had the exceptional opportunity to try the brand new dinner menu tonight. It was out of this world! The crew here really stepped it up. The Elote and fish taco were not only mouthwatering good, but also an experience in itself. From the fun plating to the top notch service, La Casita coffee leaves me wanting nothing but more of their company, food, and drink. The crew here seriously is outstanding - especially the night crew. They put so much thought and consideration into making my day, in the little ways. It's so charming. They each radiate kindness and cultivate an environment that people cant help but connect within and among. We need more places that serve with the intention and level la casita does.

Yelp
Hate to say it but I was kinda disappointed. The service wasn't the greatest, felt awkward asking for help at the counter. My chocolate croissant came cold and I asked to reheat it - very kindly they replaced it and said they'd bring it out to our table bc we were in the book store. They didn't and apparently called out and said oh it's gonna be cold again bc you didn't come grab it...Sad! Coffee was too syrup-y and croissant barely had chocolate in it. Regards,

Yelp
Shut the front door - La Casita is OUTSTANDING we have been to their Richardson location and were so excited to see them open inside of Half Price Books. The renovated space is delightful. The food options were inventive and tasty. Love the drink options as well, not JUST coffee. Can't wait until they open the patio and serve dinner as will definitely be there.

Yelp
La Casita traditional menu included a Turkish latte. It was so spicy smooth and delicious. The flavors were not over powering. The team is proficient with answering questions and getting my order correct. I wish they had low fat or non fat dairy options. Alternate non dairy milks are available. Wait until you see the to-go cup for hot drinks!! It's like an adult sippee cup!

Yelp
I had been wanting to try La Casita ever since I heard they opened a location in the flagship Half Price Books. I got the ham & cheese croissant, a seasonal pear-shaped pastry (don't remember the name or ingredients), and a Turkish latte with rice milk. Everything was good but my expectations were high. The Turkish latte was delicious with a good balance of holiday spices. I had never tried rice milk before; it seemed to make a decent latte. The ham & cheese croissant was good but not very filling or remarkable. The seasonal pear-shaped pastry was interesting looking. I began eating it from the outside in but it was too dry and cakey. I quickly realized you have to eat the inner filling with the outer cake for it to really be edible. I liked it after I figured that out but I still didn't think it was amazing. Overall, I really enjoyed La Casita but it didn't quite meet my high expectations given its reputation, and I didn't feel like I quite got my money's worth. Nevertheless, I look forward to trying some of their other coffee drinks and pastries in the future. For those of you looking for a good place to study or work, there were a lot of parents with young kids running around and screaming around the cafe and Half Price Books, at least on the weekend.

Yelp
Live nearby Half Price Books and was so excited to see that La Casita was opening a location there! I've been a few times now, and each time the folks working have been super friendly and ready to talk you through the menu. The seasonal syrups are really great, and I appreciate that they use paper cups, limiting single use plastic! However, the paper cups don't hold coffee quite as well as plastic, and I found them to be a bit prone to spilling (especially on the go!). Bc of this I brought a clean travel cup and they were kind enough to fill that for me instead. The shop is adorable with lots of seating, WiFi, and some outlets. Drinks can take a while when the shop is busy, so don't come in a rush, but they're worth the wait!

Yelp
I ordered chilaquiles with pork. I wasn't aware that it was $15 plus $4 for the pork. You're telling $15 was just for chips, beans, avocado and two eggs, pricey. I'm aware inflation is high but not this high. Idk if I would be back. I was also under the impression that it was a coffee shop but it was more like a restaurant with a coffee bar.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Edit: to dine in, please see the host station. In restaurant seating is limited. Staff works quickly and efficiently to turn tables over. Also, there's plenty of seating just outside the venue and / or outside, when the weather is right. Love the Richardson location. Came back to try breakfast here. Sourdough had the perfectly crusted edges. Whipped butter and jam provided. Minimum 2 eggs per side order. I added a little hot sauce. We were in business! This made for the perfect egg sandwich. Only one star off as the water flavor has been off lately. Note the hours of operation. Enjoy!

Yelp
We came in with Ziggy our care dog and asked if it was we okay and the nice manager let us if it would be okay for us to come in and her agreed! The service and coffee were excellent. We will be back!!

Yelp
I love las casita! I was skeptical about tying it at first because I thought it would be like any other texmex brunch spot, but they prove same wrong! La casita has such delicious food and drinks, must go!!

Yelp
Cute bakery inside of the flagship Half Price Books. The pastries were all good and you can order everything online as well.

Yelp
So glad I tried this coffee house. I appreciate the Half Price Books location since there is plenty of parking on site. I came on a Friday for an early lunch. One lines up to order at the Tiki bar. There they take "to go" or dine in orders. Tables are inside and outside the cafe area in the air conditioned space of the bookstore. Menu is a bit more limited (for now) compared to the Richardson location. They close at 3pm daily. I ordered a large Turkish latte, a butter croissant, and a chicken tikka masala sandwich to eat in. My order was completed quickly from the kitchen and brought to my table by a cheerful and friendly server. My large Turkish latte had a beautiful kitty embellished on the foam. It demonstrates the pride and artistry of the resident barista. The taste was extremely satisfying. My butter croissant was absolute perfection. The best I've tried in the Dallas area. The outside was extremely thin layers of crispy, flaky pastry. Pulling it apart, wonderful shards of that exterior fell into my plate. The interior was also light layers of the most delicate, perfectly baked croissant. No wonder this bakery has a James Beard nomination. They know how to bake a perfect croissant. My tikka masala chicken sandwich was also a winner. It came on a freshly baked ciabatta bun, which was also a winner. The fried chicken breast was large, boneless, and crispy without a hint of greasiness. The aïoli was spicy and tasty. My lunch cost me $25 but it was worth every penny. I would definitely come here again. Definitely found "the" bakery to get outstanding croissants. The coffee is extremely good and the baked goods I tried are simply perfect. Service is courteous, friendly and attentive.

Yelp
La Casita just opened inside the Half Price Books on Northwest Highway and Shady Brook. I used to spend a lot of time at the old coffee shop, Black Forest, in the same spot. Back then, it was all bottomless coffee from pump carafes. La Casita keeps the old bones but feels more polished, like a fast-casual restaurant. I arrived at 8 a.m. on the first Monday after their grand opening. Only two people were there, but it filled up slowly by 10:30 a.m. It seats at least 40 to 50 people comfortably inside and another 10-12 inside the bookstore. Lots of folks were sitting at the bar, which surprised me, since it seems the traffic to the register is destined to be clogged. The baristas were sharp and excellent. The gluten-free banana muffin was creamy, more than I deserved on a Monday. The cortado was strong, tasted like it came from Italy. I miss the old Black Forest and its rough, cheap charm, but La Casita is a big improvement. A real upgrade for this community.

Yelp
Love the Richardson location and excited to see one open where Half Price Books is. The interior is a cute space. Wish there was a bit more light on the side that's along the HPB interior but we were there before the store opened. It was about a quarter full on a Thurs morning around 8a. Ordered drip coffee (regular mug if eating there) and also a ham and cheese croissant. I ordered it to be heated but it definitely was not. The ham was even a bit on the cold side but hopefully that was just a one time miss. Service was great and our server regularly filled up our coffee over the time we were there. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I wasn't too impressed with the coffee, as it tasted a bit watered down. However, the place itself has a lovely atmosphere.

Yelp
Everything is amazing here! Food/pastries/drinks are so good. My personal fav is their cruffin and avocado toast. I'm so Happy there is finally one near me and it's right down the street (lake highlands) woohoo!!!

Yelp
Hours on the weekend are ridiculous. All the tables were reserved and the reserved signs all came off when they were closing, which implies they were trying to make sure nobody stayed. There is no menu on the wall - the fastest way to get a menu is to scan the code and look on your phone. I also didn't see an obvious display of pastries and it is supposed to be a bakeshop. The indoor patio is filled with free-WiFi laptop users who are too cool to go to McDonald's. The cold brew was good but it's not worth dealing with the pretentiousness.

Yelp
My stomach hurts so bad after eating here Wanted to try this place because it's brand new and in half price books. The service was great all the workers are super nice. The ambiance was also nice with the decor. I went and got an iced latte with sugar free syrup to go and a warmed up cinnamon bun. The coffee was so sweet it was insane. Felt like I was just drinking sugar. Also the to go cups suck. I was trying to carry mine out and it was spilling everywhere. The cinnamon roll was just hard even though it was warmed up. It was just ok. The good thing is a drink and pastry was less than $10. The bad thing is the coffee wasn't good, spilled everywhere, and now my stomach hurts so bad. I know this place recently opened so maybe they're still working out the kinks but yeah I'll wait a bit before trying it again.

Yelp
Great place for a cup of coffee and some pastries. If you go on a weekend, beware that there might be a bit of a wait for a table because seating is limited. They have a seasonal/weekend menu that we loved. Unfortunately we went a bit later in the day and some of what we wanted. We went on a day where it was pouring and they were inundated with customers. The staff kept their cool, was friendly/professional.

Yelp
From the first Sunday to today WOW! We even took home the multi grain sour dough loaf. So good. Trying the new FALL hot coffee drink SWEET POTATO WITH PECAN MAPLE FOAM. Watch out hot chocolate! So good and not too sweet either just right. Staff is amazing they actually speak and not phone centric Can't wait till they are open for dinner!!

Jessica Z.

Yelp
First time here and loved it! The food, coffee, and the atmosphere was amazing! Will definitely come back and try everything else they have. Henri was our server and was very nice.

Yelp
This place was super cute and very aesthetically pleasing to the eye! The music was good not too loud so it allowed for you to study or crack open a freshly purchased book from next store. Service was welcoming, friendly, and light hearted. Will definitely be back !! And it is a definite must try !! Ps: I tried the crispy potato sandwich and it was delicious !!

Yelp
This is the most disgusting gross tasting coffee in dallas. The to go cups are dysfunctional chinese food containers being used as a "cup". Who thought of such of dumb idea? Pastries are dried out tasteless stale wastes of calories. The pastries make costco's "bakery" look and taste like an authentic speciality french pastry shop. You are better off eating the pages of a used up old book you just purchased from half price books which will have more flavor, texture, and better quality ingredients than anything from the la casita counter. The shop was very filthy with trash, used cups, and junk everywhere. The staff was very lazy and not very friendly service wise. This business will not last long and will hopefully go out of business to be replaced with some place that has higher quality products and standards.

Yelp
Vibe is cute and food is decent but the girl who took our order was was very rude. It's a confusing layout and she was super condescending when we asked questions. Basically even though it's a coffee shop in a literal book store, you have to be seated by a host but there was no host in sight.... so when asked at the cash register if we wanted to dine in or dine out, it was confusing. Won't be returning, only because she was really rude to us, super bummed bc we go to half price frequently. Iced latte was not good. They forgot the syrup so when I went back, they did admit their mistake but instead of a making a new drink correctly, she just told me to open the lid (which I couldn't ever close again) and she threw some in there.... I mean I even had to stir it and it was way too much syrup.

Yelp
Outstanding Experience at La Casita: This was our first time visiting La Casita, and it exceeded all expectations. Although the seating is small, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The servers were incredibly attentive, making sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. The food was absolutely delicious! The smoked London Fog tea latte was exceptional, and the Eggs Benedict was perfectly prepared. My husband had the breakfast plate--simple and classic but done to perfection. The bottomless coffee was rich and flavorful, a great complement to the meal. We will definitely be back. This little gem is not to be missed! Suggested menu addition would be Oaxacan Irish Coffee: Irish whiskey, coffee infused with Mexican chocolate, a touch of mezcal for smokiness, and cream whipped with orange blossom and cinnamon.

Abbie G.

Yelp
Wait staff is amazing. So attentive & fast! All hands on deck on a Sunday morning. I got the horchata cold brew and it was very flavorful & cinnamon-y 8/10. A little too sweet for my liking but great! Husband got the vanilla cold brew & he loved it. 10/10 recommend the almond croissant!! Chilaquiles were flavorful & were tossed in the sauce like AUTHENTIC chilaquiles should be. The sauce has a chile guajillo taste to it. Personally I prefer my chilaquiles with a bit of a kick to them. These were a 1 on a scale of 1-10 in spice level. Still yummy! Hubs got the breakfast plate & was not a fan of the potato and veggies he said they lacked season. Everything else was great def will be back!

Denise V.

Yelp
This is the cutest coffee place ever, all the workers look cool and friendly. I absolutely love the Hispanic culture and the ambiance of the place.

Yelp
I'm trying really hard to like this place -- I was so excited for it to open in HPB! Unfortunately it's just missed the mark every time. It can't seem to decide if it wants to be a coffee shop, a restaurant, or a bar... you order at the counter, but there's a hostess at the front asking if you'd like to dine in or order to go, and there's silverware at every table. Every drink I've had has been far too sweet, and the music is on way too loud for a restaurant or a coffee shop. I leave with headaches after trying to work there, and it's kindof ruining the vibes of HPB since you can hear it through half the store. Some places have found ways to merge different concepts, but this one needs to work out some kinks. Plus side, the pastries are heavenly! This is what they're known for, and I'd love to see them lean into that instead of trying to do so many different things at the same time.

Yelp
My fourth time at the Half Price Books location. I love the well-prepared food, specifically the quiche and matcha latte. Maybe I'm not very picky, but I am amazed how the employees seem to genuinely make an effort to provide good service. If there's any room for improvement, it would be that wait times can be long, but even at that point I was provided a water then a free drink of my choosing while waiting since they didn't ask whether I wanted to-go vs indoor service. So, yeah, that's almost two issues on this visit but I think the proactive resolution was a welcome freebie well worthy of my forgiveness. Don't expect it to be quiet and laid back in the bar, but step into the book area for that.

Shawn H.

Yelp
I love La Casita! After having breakfast at the original location in Richardson, I was so excited to see this location open up so close to where I live! The horchata cold brew is my favorite coffee drink, and the croissants are incredible. I love how you are surrounded by books. I have already visited 3 times since it's opening and I will continue!

Yelp
This coffee shop recently opened in the old Black Forest Bakery space inside the Half Price Books store on Northwest Highway. A friend and I had lunch there today. We shared a club sandwich and a slice of pumpkin bread - which I didn't see on the menu, just on the counter, so maybe it's a seasonal item. Those two items with two cold lattes came to $31 before tax and tip, so it's certainly not an inexpensive meal. It all tasted good and the service was good.

Alek G.

Yelp
So what the deal with Togo cups. It's stupid. I want regular cups .... I don't wanna sip my drink

Charity Y.

Yelp
The coffee here is AMAZING! And the pastries and food are really good too! The vanilla cappuccino is and almond croissant my fave!
google avatar

Tori C.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop! I visited this location on a Saturday around 10, it was busy but there were places to sit which was nice & it is attached to half price books, so we went next door after. Their vanilla Latte is so good, they use La Columbe which is my favorite & I got a cinnamon roll & tried the cosmic brownie which was also very good. Fresh pastries & they also seemed to have a full service menu, but i didn't try anything on there. overall 10/10

Angela M.

Yelp
Service was amazing, we were able to get good info on the menu! The food was very good. We had chilaquiles and a side of their hash. So very yummy!! The chips stayed crunchy until the very end, great ratio of sauce and cheese. The veggies in the hash was a great combo, grilled to perfection. We ordered coffee and pastries on our way out. We had the almond croissants as so delicious, buttery flakes, full of flavor. Daughter gave it a 1000 out of 10!!!

Kayti B.

Yelp
Cutest little coffee shop! And I love that it is attached to a book store. Makes for a nice slow Saturday destination.

Maya H.

Yelp
The ambiance is great and the servers are nice. It is a great place to have a bite to eat or sit down to study. Their menu is extensive and the food is great from previous experiences at the establishment. The hostess for this particular visit, however, was not inviting nor hospitable.

Victor G.

Yelp
Coffee is really good. And thirst croissants area amazing. Big line to order, but service was very quick and everyone was really friendly. Plenty of seating available.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Dallas has been waiting for La Casita! She has arrived and doesn't disappoint. Highly recommended.
