The Newest Restaurants In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"We love La Catrachita and their birria tacos. And now you can get the same meaty, cheesy haul on East Passyunk any time of the day. That’s right—the taqueria is open 24 hours a day. Think of the possibilities: tacos for breakfast, tortas for lunch, al pastor fries for dinner, nachos for a late-night pick-me-up, and tres leches at 4am, because why not?" - candis mclean, alison kessler

The 10 Best Birria Tacos in Philly, Ranked

"Sure, La Catrachita on Columbus Blvd. makes a few things besides birria. But like Rihanna once said, “baby, this (birria) is what you came for.” The thick-cut beef is incredibly flavorful thanks to its bath of peppers, onions, and cilantro, and it’s all pan-fried with so much queso Oaxaca that you end up with a side dish of chewy cheese crust. The tortillas are the perfect mid-point between crispy and chewy, even after soaking in that savory consomme. They also make a cheesy birria ramen using the consomme for broth if you prefer to eat with silverware." - alison kessler

La Catrachita Mexican Food Review - South Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Sure, La Catrachita on Columbus Blvd. makes a few things besides birria. But like Rihanna once said, “baby, this (birria) is what you came for.” The beef is incredibly flavorful thanks to its bath of peppers, onions, and cilantro, and it’s all pan-fried with so much mozzarella that you end up with a side dish of chewy cheese crust. They make a hefty quesabirria (a birria-packed quesadilla), but we find the tacos to be the better vehicle for all that savory meat. They also make a cheesy birria ramen using the rich consomme as broth, and if you’re not into birria, the al pastor tacos are a solid second choice. There are a few seats in the strip mall space, but your best bet is taking your spread to go. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Food Rundown photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Birria Tacos Incredibly tender shredded beef, a thick layer of deliciously salty mozzarella cheese, and a bowl of velvety, oniony consomme for dipping. Need we say more? No, but we will. Go get these tacos, pronto. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Al Pastor Tacos If you’re someone who can’t choose between sweet and savory, or, better yet, prefers your sweet with savory, the al pastor tacos are a good addition to your order. The pork can be on the tough side, but it has a mild adobo spice and is tossed with big hunks of juicy pineapple. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Shrimp Tacos The shrimp is well-cooked and there’s a smattering of cilantro on top, but even with a squeeze of lime, these tacos are bland. Skip ‘em." - Alison B. Kessler

Looking for someplace 24/7 eat?! This is your space for delectable food at good price for breakfast thru dinner. Yet, I came for one thing, BIRRIA!! I ordered the birria tacos & birria ramen combo, chicken tacos, & quesadilla from the kiosk. My wait was about 15 minutes and then I could dig in! While the food is flavored well many condiments come on the side. The staff was pleasant! The Columbus Blvd location may be busy but they get your order out efficiently. Ill be thru regularly now!

Google
This place is great. I was outside drunk sitting in the car waiting on my tacos I was so drunk. I think I left the phones on top of the car then drove off. I’m so happy and excited about the tacos. I didn’t even realize I lost my phone until I got home, but then it was too late. It was over. I called them to see if I left my phone on the counter but the workers didn’t speak English so they had to use a translator. Other than that I still give them 10/10 and they open 24 hours

Google
Tried this place last night, and they did not disappoint. The food was fresh and delicious. Love the Birria tacos and Birria ramen. The tacos are packed with beef. I can't wait to visit again.

Google
I can't comment on how this place looks because I've never been in the restaurant. I've had deliveries from this place on more than one occasion. I've always enjoyed their food. This place produces edible food. They put extra condiments and vegetables on the side of their dish. The restaurant even makes sure to put utensils in the bag. I don't have any negative critique of this place. I thought I would complain about the price, but they give enough food to be full, but if you do have a big appetite, order a side dish.

I was so excited and ready to get these tacos. I was not even welcomed correctly. I tried to initiate my order because although the energy is bad I really wanna try the food. I began to tell the young gentleman in glasses my order. I don’t even think he hears me or want to hear me right in front of him. He was approached by a woman speaking Spanish and begins having a whole conversation….remind you I’m at the counter. I said again I’m ready to order. Normal tone because I don’t wanna be rude although now I’m very upset. They’re talking she gives him money…all while this continues to happen I just walked out. I don’t know if the customer service is bad or if it’s because I’m black or maybe I’m Casper and don’t know it but it was a horrible experience and I never got to try the food. I did sit in the parking lot a moment and the have a Spanish clientele so maybe they didn’t speak English either way VERY UPSETTING. At least the Car Wash their next to whom I’m a patron Off which is how I noticed the place is great.

Google
My friends absolutely loved the food! It was our first time visiting the restaurant and we decided on the Birria Tacos, which were absolutely delicious! The portion size was great, especially for the price. The customer service was excellent; the staff brought our food promptly. The menu offers a wide variety, and everything was delicious! Prices are reasonable for the high quality. Definitely recommend trying this place out!

Google
The burrito was a flavorless catastrophe. It was sloppy and not put together very well. I hated the deli paper they put in the packaging as I have never seen this from a Mexican restaurant. Burritos are normally wrapped in foil so it’s kept warm. I will never eat at this place again. Waste of money

Google
We saw this place on Instagram, we drove from nj to philly to try it out. We ordered and planned to dine in. We got our food and sat down to eat and literally saw a baby roach crawling up the wall under the TV. My fiance was so grossed out we packed up and ate in the car. The guacamole was OK. Not very flavorful. The birria tacos were good but the sauce was a little runny and also not too flavorful. We got wings that were good and jalapeño poppers. Overall we were satisfied, could have been better. I don't wanna fault them for the roach it's philly, and I get it, it happens. I hope they address it because I'm sure that's not the only one...there's never just one roach.

Yelp
AMAZING late night eats. Everything is always fresh made to order. Very fulfilling, the line may be a little long but it's well worth the wait. You can take it to go or eat inside. They never mess up my order and I always go very late at night and it always tastes the same. Amazing!!! Overall 9/10

Yelp
I've been a few times and enjoyed it. I recommend you order ahead. They cook to order and it takes a few minutes. It's mainly a to-go spot with just a few stools. Tacos are good. Quesadillas were good. The menu is pretty big. Reliable, tasty Mexican food on the go.

Yelp
Got the flour tacos with a killer bogo coupon the other day. LUVVED it. The 3 saucces with the lime to put on the three tacos was exceptional. Just the perfect amount of spice it was a nice burn on the palette. Didnt know they were 24/7 but there ya go thats gr8

Yelp
I came here for a light night snack after a long night, and I was happily surprised by how good their birria quesadillas was. The tortilla was super flaky and crispy which was paired with the tender and flavorful birria. While I have had better birria, where else can you say that you can get good birria past 12am.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is completely professional the customer was service amazing. The place was nice and clean inside and out. Definitely come here if you are looking for food on a late night they are open 24 HOURS. The food is made fresh right in front of you and they even have fresh fruit and cake.

Yelp
Drive from jersey every week just to get sum of that shrimp birria. Me and the cashier are on a first name basis they might as well sponsor me at this point

Yelp
The items in my delivery order from LaCatrachita Food Truck wasn't what was included in my delivery. Don't let the words "food truck" lead you to believe you might find a diamond in the rough. At $14.99 for three (3) tacos, the poor quality doesn't justify the price. Instead of a positive experience, and pleasant surprise of a gem, what I received was closer to coal- some type of meat that was dry, overcooked, and tasteless. I ordered, Al Pastor Paisa Tacos, but that's not what I received. With the receipt stapled onto the tied plastic bag, with two orders of tacos in styrofoam containers, with 3 varieties of taco sauce included, it's hard to believe someone could not see that the order was wrong, especially when the tacos are served open-faced. With many good to exceptional Mexican restaurants in a 5 mile radius, there's no need to give this truck a test drive.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed with this place. Most of Mexican restaurants in South Philly are usually very good and authentic, but this one is a little different. Meats are dry and bland. I feel like I ate Taco Bell version here. On the service side, everyone is nice, but took a bit too long for the food to be ready. This place was a food truck before it moved next door to the Little Sicily Pizza 2 at Christopher Columbus Blvd. The atmosphere is not fancy, but has a good amount of seating inside and parking is available.

Yelp
The extended hours are superb! (Please note the hours differ from what Yelp has as of 12/18/23). See my picture for current hours or current as of 12/9/23. Hard working people. I like the computer kiosks when you go to order in-person. Best late night food to have that isn't Wawa and accessible by car. Walkable if you walk and know you are going. The shrimp entree I have tasted great with flavor and good temperature with a mix of sauteed veggies. I tried a fries combo and while it was nice to see a Latino style on fries, I didn't feel it went as well as your more traditional marinara or ranch with, mozzarella cheese and bacon. I think maybe they could consider leaving the cheese out with their fries- still would be tasty but then healthier too: I had a jello combo dessert which is aesthetically nice but sub par. I wanted to try this place because I did a delivery from here one time and it was also good for late nights. Was feeling to try this place on a late night after a show. I see the location is different than what is on Yelp as of 12/18/23. Passyunk is more walkable overall but I actually personally like their current location more because it is a bit drivable and relatively walkable if you understand the geography. The food overall was 3 stars for me but their excellent customer service and hours easily make me add a star.

Yelp
I came in to order my tacos , yk it's taco Tuesday or w.e I came here before I had no issue , this time I come and i waited over 35 min for my food then when received my food my corn was cold like I waited all this time for cold ass food

Yelp
The best birria in Philly! Come get them! They're open 24/7 and our go to spot for tacos after concerts!
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
This food truck stays open late, we ordered through DoorDash. The drinks were good and the tiramisu. My shrimp quesadilla was very cheesy, I feel like it could have had more shrimp to even things out some.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
Hands down, best Mexican in Philly. Haven't had a bad meal after several different orders. Can't go wrong here. Major plus being open late too.
google avatar

Jenni G.

Yelp
The best birria taco I've ever had in my life. It's life changing actually. So much flavor on each bite. I know that as I head back home I'll be dreaming about those tacos that I had while on vacation.

Yelp
First time ever going here and I'm super disappointed. Just Terrible!!! First I wanted authentic Honduran food, they only have a couple items, everything else is Mexican food. Nothing wrong with that but I def was looking for more of a Honduran cuisine. Second, the cashiers don't even bother greeting you or anything. The vibe felt so weird walking in, I had to say hi to them first , whatever .. Third, they don't even check your food when they hand it to you. What's the point of having a cashier if they're not doing their job right honestly. Not to mention you take/place your own order at the KIOSK . I ended up ordering shrimp tacos, I get to my car to eat the food. There's literally no cilantro, onions, pearled, onions, or side of sauces like it states on the menu. Literally , nothing at all!! just the tacos with the shrimp and that's it. So obviously I went back in because I can't eat my tacos without salsas and so I asked the cashier " isn't this supposed to come with all of this?" Either that cashier was new or just didn't care; cuz he just weirdly starred at me ( mind you I speak fluent Spanish ) but he didn't even say anything. He just took the food back to kitchen, 4 mins go by he brought it back and said that "that's all they had left". No apology nothing! Unbelievable forreal.. Which is not understandable at all, i've worked in the food industry for years and you're most likely supposed to have all that alrdy prepped back there . My pearl onions were cold!!! Just straight up cold, they took 4 mins for nothing because they didn't even bother grilling them.. anyways if you're drunk or want sh!tty food this is your go to spot . But def not an authentic Honduran restaurant!! idk why they even call themselves " catrachita " they literally only have 2 Honduran items on their menu,no kidding . Also it's def not good Mexican food either. So If you know you lack Honduran items on the menu , at least learn to make Mexican food right!!! so other ppl can come back lol . Definitely my last time coming here .

Yelp
I've been going to this place for almost 2 years now when it wasn't popular yet. I even post TikTok's of them before they even had a TikTok! I loved the crap out of their food so much I'll go every other day but NOW I'm not so sure about that anymore. I feel like ever since they have got the audience and clout finally for their good food they've started to go down hill. For the past couple months I've been ordering there it's like something isn't right every time different stuff. The taste isn't the same like before or the little thing like they didn't give cucumbers in the order but did the next lol. I feel like the fame has gotten to them and I want my old taco spot back
google avatar

Jamie R.

Yelp
I got the breakfast tacos, they were soooooo delicious and a great price. Can't wait to go back.

Michelle K.

Yelp
Great food!! We ordered the Birria tacos and carne asada tacos. Both were delicious, especially their consommé. They also have the cutest salsa packets, that was tasty and packing my kinda heat.

Jayda W.

Yelp
Order: Asada paisa tacos (3 pcs) The tacos were pretty good. I enjoyed all the toppings provided but the meat was a little difficult to chew and didn't have much flavor. It could just be the time of night I ordered them. Otherwise, no complaints.

Yelp
I went here when they first opened, and the food is legit. A bit pricey, I will admit, but worth it. They have Veracruzana beat, hands down, which is amazing, because Veracruzana has gotten Best of Philly multiple times. The service is great, everyone from the counter person, to the cook, right down to the customers. And the environment is relaxed. When I walked in, Spanish hip hop was playing, there was friendly chatter from all the customers (the majority of which were Mexican/Latino(a), which to me speaks to the authenticity of the food) and there was just a happy, friendly vibe. I felt more like I was walking into a friend's house for dinner, instead of a small restaurant. There is a Chipotle right across the street, so if you're looking for a quick meal, go there. But if you want authentic Mexican food and to maybe make a few friends, this is your place.

Yelp
La Catrachita Food Truck is one of my go to spots for ordering food while I'm working night shift. They are one of the few places still open on DoorDash when I'm starving at 2 am on a weeknight and they have yet to disappoint me - I always order the Chicken Tinga Burrito and honestly, it's still pretty good even when I can't get to it right away.
google avatar

Dave P.

Yelp
I got some birria tacos delivered from their new brick and mortar spot and WOW they are amazing. So far, they're the best I've had in PHL. Very generous portions, nice crispy/crunchy shells, tasty beef with an outstanding consome. I believe they're open 24 hrs, so it makes for a great late night meal after some drinking. Give this place a shot if you're on the Birria bandwagon. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Shanique M.

Yelp
The only thing that kept me from giving them 5 stars was the lack of seasoning in the steak. This was definitely a great late night taco spot. Pretty good street tacos and a very popular spot in Philadelphia.
google avatar

Jeary S.

Yelp
Randomly ordered from this place via ubereats late night. And honestly it was a great decision bc I really enjoyed every bite of it! I got the birria tacos. Loved how they gave veges on the side. I know there's some low reviews for this place but I've had a good experience. I had my fair share of birria from many restaurants and trucks but thought my order was solid. One con is that it was quite far away so it took about 45 minutes to get my food but it was still good.
google avatar

Glam S.

Yelp
Omg I'm soooooo happy I have found this LATE NIGHT truck with my favorite cuisine. This truck is a hidden gem amongst all the "tourist spots" off passyunk. The food, THE FOOD (had to repeat it) is soooooo good and fresh. I had the shrimp tacos and they were tender FRESH shrimp with all the toppings. The sauces they offer compliment the tacos well. My hubby had the steak burrito. Boy!!!! It was seasoned to perfection and soooooo delicious. The only thing I would suggest is to make a hotter sauce. I like spicy SPICY!!! However, The people were friendly and welcoming. I will be back very very soon!!!! I have no pictures this time because I ate the food to fast lol. Next time!!!
google avatar

Shaji K.

Yelp
Seeing the monster lines at both the cheesesteak places on the corner of the street, decided to hit this nearby food truck instead. Seemingly open late and a single table outside if you want to eat then and there. Decided on the Salt Pepper Chicken Burrito ($10), which comes with some tortilla chips and hot sauces to the side. Tortilla wrap is crisped on the outside, stuffed with marinated chicken, sticky rice, beans, tomatoes, avocado, and pico de gallo. Interesting texture combination, as the rice sticks around the ingredients sushi-style. Chicken is seasoned well, and the side hot sauce adds the necessary kick. Also tried the Veggie Tacos ($8) as well - three to an order but not as flavorful as their meat counterparts. Solid option when super hungry in the area. If no seating available, there are a couple bars nearby that allow food to be brought in.

Yelp
OMFG!!!! Me and my boyfriend was on a late night search for Mexican food and when I say IMMACULATE I mean it!! I got the Asada Gabacho Tacos and if you're looking for flavor thats the one to go with, it was so juicy and flavorful its unexplainable my taste buds were definitely surprised with this one! My boyfriend got the Marinated chicken burrito and loved it so much he said "Mexicans invented marinating" and I 100% agree we definitely will be ordering again or going there ourselves because wow!!

Insun Y.

Yelp
Was ravenous after a conference at the inconvenient and ungodly time of 2am. Everything was closed, but this shop carries birria tacos (which I've come to love, thanks to New York) so I went for it. The birria is pretty good, but it's a lot more watery than I expected. It tastes like perhaps it wasn't cooked for long enough, or it was thinned out by adding water in equal parts to the broth. Nevertheless, I was hungry and it was hot, so it was still a good experience. Also, their tiramisu is to die for. I don't know where they source it from, but I would love to know.
google avatar

Blair D.

Yelp
Delicious food and fast service. You have to try the birria ramen with the tacos - cheesy, beefy, soupy!
google avatar

Sami S.

Yelp
The quality and flavor is terrible. Plus, when I ordered food from this stinky truck, I found a nail in my taco. Unbelievable, they should name it TACO NAIL. Not to mention, the meat tasted like rubber. DON'T EAT AT THIS PLACE.
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
I ordered Uber eats and the lengua was almost flavorless. I'll give it props since it was tender and juicy. The Al pastor was chewy and dry. Would not recommend.

Alyssa H.

Yelp
We landed in Philly and when we got to our hotel we ordered food at 3am & it was super fast & everything was finominal. We got a burrito, birria tacos, fries and wings & everything was spot on. 100% recommend

Paul G.

Yelp
Love this place. Best in the city hands down for Mexican food during the late night hours.

J R.

Yelp
Happy to find pollo con tajadas on the avenue!!! (seasoned fried chicken on top of plantains, pickled onions and slaw -- ask for the sauce on the side if you want it a little less messy or aren't eating right away). Theirs is so so good I'm usually scarfing it before I can sit down. They also sell honduran baleadas which are not easy to come by. Last but not least, there is a solid taco menu - the garlic steak tacos were delicious! Added oaxaca cheese to mine which was on point.

John K.

Yelp
Prices went up 4 dollars for three chicken tacos. They must have a new cook or someone managing the truck. The chicken tacos were completely different than the ones I have gotten weekly since august. They were over cooked and not as aesthetically pleasing or tasty as previously received. Honestly I would prefer Genos or pats over what I received for 12.99. At least they are cheaper and consistent

Guillermo A.

Yelp
The food looks and taste awesome I will suggest and recommend this food for anyone or also my wife is a very picky eater and she loves the food

Ryan M.

Yelp
Great tastes, but they serve marinara(wtf?) with their burritos? Came with sour cream as well so it was very confusing. Hoping this was a fluke.
