La Chancla Mexican Grill Review - Long Beach - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"La Chancla is a Long Beach taqueria dedicated to rich, slow-cooked tacos de guisado. Located in a tiny strip mall, this Mexican restaurant serves a wide variety of stewed meats and veggies behind a glass counter. From birria and tinga de pollo to chile verde and pollo con mole, you’ll catch aromas of meat and simmering sauces as you enter La Chancla’s colorful dining room. All of their house-made corn tortillas are firm, but pliable blankets that catch all the juicy parts of the taco fillings. Drop by for the Tuesday special, which comes with three tacos de guisado and a large agua fresca for $10." - Nikko Duren

Incredible service. INCREDIBLE mango Fresca. INCREDIBLE homemade tortillas. Juicy meats, delicious shrimp but I wouldn’t call it spicy at all, amazing birria tacos. Cute restaurant, but what was so special is that the owner is present and enjoying his own restaurant, vibing to the music. I love places like this and can’t wait to bring my family back.

Google
I waited way too long to eat here. Their birria is out of this world! Tortillas are freshly made BY HAND and if you’re being ridiculous (like me) and are trying a keto or carnivore diet; they’ll go out of their way to help you out with that (cheese tortilla was awesome). Customer service is great. A delicious hidden gem. Must try! 10/10 would recommend.

Google
Tried it out and enjoyed my meal and experience. Had the quesadilla and the tacos. Horchata was tasty and the mango water was sweet. The server was very attentive and responsive. Really enjoyed having him. Place is small but spacious enough for a small group. Recommend.

Google
This is exceptionally delicious food! From traditional Mexican to Tex Mex favorites, your palate will explode from the intensely fresh, spicy flavors. The salsa was loaded with citrus notes along with fresh Serrano Chile heat. And the prices made it all feel like you found a secret spot that you hope more people hear about!

Google
The employee there were amazing and the food was delicious! I’d definitely recommend to try the birria Raman here!

Ordered food through DoorDash at 9pm. It was the best take out food I’ve gotten in a long time. They included every part of my order and got my modifications correct. Everything arrived hot and fresh, correctly seasoned and full of meat. The churros were also amazing. Next time I want to try the torta and drinks. Please go here!!

Google
The name made me come here but the Service and the quality of the food made me stay. Upon my arrival my self and and my colleagues were immediately acknowledge and greeted .first time here and Isabella made my experience seamless she recommended Great choices from the menu which is I took her advice and I do not regret it. As my food was getting prepared I took a sneak peek in the kitchen all the employees were wearing masks and gloves and the place looked very sanitary and clean. Everything is made in house from the sauces to the tortillas and you can feel The freshness as you eat. The flavors of the food were very balanced and the meat is high-quality and it melts in your mouth when you eat it. Prices are very fordable for a really big burrito and a large drink with light ice my total came to $13.50 totally worth it. If you have not been here yet what are you waiting for??

Google
We were greeted immediately upon entering and experienced consistently great service throughout our visit. The birria con consome had incredible fluffy tortillas, and the chanclazos were crispy and came with tasty salsa. The combo is a full meal with beans and rice. The chips and salsa as appetizer are the right choice, and you won't be disappointed with the salsa!! Good tunes as well!

Yelp
The moment my husband and I walked through the door, we were greeted like old friends. It was our first time dining at the restaurant, and the owner--warm, welcoming, and full of heart--made us feel right at home. I asked him about the name of the place, and if you're Hispanic, you'll instantly understand *la chancla* reference--oh yes, *that* chancla. His passion for preserving culture and honoring legacy shines through every corner of the restaurant. And the food? *¡Sabrosísimo!* Every bite was a delicious celebration of tradition and flavor. But as incredible as the dishes were, it's the owner's charm, sincerity, and genuine care that will bring us back. Food feeds the body, but that kind of hospitality feeds the soul.

Yelp
I came here today out of luck. I do not live in this area but we were looking for some good home-like food. We stumbled across La Chancla and I am so happy we did. The food was delicious and tasted like something my Tia's would make for me. I tried the mole and the birria and it was amazing. I live in OC I will definitely return if I'm in the area.

Yelp
First time trying La Chancla after good words were heard from my friends. It is a very nice and cozy place when I arrived. With ample seating and bustling with people ordering. I ordered the 3 tacos with rice and beans. I got the La verde, shrimp, and chicharones tacos. The best taco for me was the shrimp taco because of the tangy/spicy sauce they have already on it. It gave the shrimp depth. I can't wait for the next time I am in Long Beach to go again.

Yelp
Fantastic mom and pop place. Excellent service and the food is amazing. Located next to hhe shopping center.

Yelp
Five stars for the flavor and quality of the meats and the handmade corn tortillas. The 3 taco platter definitely seems like the way to go here for the best experience. But the rest is a semi-cautionary tale: The carne asada fries were super basic and pretty underwhelming for the price, though the carne asada itself is absolutely delicious. My husband got a mole burrito and requested it wet, assuming it would be covered in mole or at least complementary-flavored sauce. It came slathered in their signature, super tangy green sauce which did not exactly go well with their rich and sweet mole. My husband was pretty put off by the flavor combination and just couldn't do it, and this man will eat anything. A heads up could have been nice. Mango agua with the chamoy/Tajin rim was fine. First few sips were bomb, but it kinda gets meh quickly. Smaller size would have definitely been the better call. --- You should still go try this establishment. Just do it for the tacos.

Yelp
This restaurant was so great. I really appreciate the hospitality from the staff, the beautiful and colorful decor, and the tasty food. I tried the chilaquiles w/ birria and my bf had the chicken enchiladas. The dishes are prepared with a green salsa, and were so delicious! The portion sizes are very generous for the price too. Omg I was so satisfied. We'll come again, thank you!
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
The lengua and asada were my favorite. The meat is cut in little squares and thats how i like it. It was clean thick cuts. I didnt like the beans but that was it. I left wanting to try the mole and the chicharron.

Yelp
I recently came here with my family after a day at MOLAA museum. We were craving some authentic Mexican food and happy we found this place because it was exactly that! The food smelled delicious as soon as you walk in. We were warmly greeted upon arriving. You order at the counter then the food is brought out to you. Do yourself a favor and get an agua fresca because it will come with chamoy rimmed cup. Messy and delicious! We had gobernador tacos ( shrimp tacos), quesadilla, soyrizo burrito, (2) 3 taco plate to try different proteins everything tasted authentic, fresh and delicious! There were Mexican party jams, good food and vibes at this spot. The name got my attention but I'm coming back because of the food.

Yelp
Fresh food. The drinks here are good. Good choice if you don't want soda! Feels like eating at home here. Happy tummy
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Service here was excellent but we got there just before the rush, which would have seriously impacted that. The food was only OK. It is a small hole-in-the-wall place, which I tend to prefer. The sauces were overly vinegary and taste of the cheese enchiladas was very bland. The taco trio we selected was OK with the carnitas being the best of three. I was hoping for more given the small location
google avatar

Jake D.

Yelp
Our first time at this hole in the wall Mexican place and we were happy we tried it out. Food was excellent, I had a chciken taco salad and it tasted very fresh. The chicken was tender, beans and rice were good. Great combination with the large horchate. Service was excellent and the place is clean and friendly. I will definitely come back again and try other items on the menu.

Yelp
My Dad and I stopped here after a kayaking trip in Redondo Beach on a Saturday night. Cute, buried at the end of strip mall. I had a wet burrito with rajas and soyrizo. So delicious. My dad three tacos, two with carnival and one I can't remember. The portions were huge. The service was fast. They were busy to go orders. I think the tortillas are made fresh. If I lived in the area I would definitely come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing!! Small hole in the wall place with friendly staff. Parking is kinda tight since there's a super market next door. Interesting menu with alot to choose from and can mix and match within reason.
google avatar

Genta G.

Yelp
The flavors were authentic and yummy, the service from the staff was incredibly kind and attentive (you felt like you were with family) and the ambiance was cozy and relaxed. I felt the essence of Mexico in every moment.

Bianca J.

Yelp
My order of torta and tacos were delicious and the quality was great and well worth the price. The service was good, made sure we had everything we needed and place place felt very much like home. Overall the atmosphere and the food deserves more than a 5 star if I could!

WS L.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious and service was great! The outdoor seating was under lots of shade which is great cause we brought our dog with us. Will definitely come back when we're in the area again!

Yelp
I was in the area and wanted a quick bite but nothing too heavy... pulled up the Yelp app and it lead me here. We arrived around 8:30 on Saturday night and there was only another family dining. Parking: 5/5 in a huge lot next to North Gate si parking is a non issue. Food: 5/5 We decided to try some tacos Baja shrimp, birria, spicy shrimp and gobernador and boy I'm glad we did. They are made with tortillas he has a mano and they're pretty big! It had some delicious tasty salsas and it's garnishments! No need for extra salsas. The shrimp gobernador came in threes $12 and the tortillas were a little fried with melted cheese really really tasty! I took some nachos home and ate them later on. Prices are less than regular so about 4 dollars per taco. We got our agua Fresca with our check in. Super refreshing. Ambiance: 5/5 it's not a full restaurant but more of a quick meal. No frills just straight to the point! It's a decorated with lots of cute indigenous curtains and has a picture of mom with the chancla. I was glad I stopped by. This will be a place I would definitely come back to if I'm in the area! Give it a try you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Staff was fine not great. The food was super disappointing. I'm a salt addict and the guac was SUPER salty. The chips seemed store bought. The tacos were so BAD and flavorless. Out of the 6 tacos bought only 1 was eaten:( Carne asada was chewy and seriously dry. The carnitas were not only dry but tasted awful. Chili verde was completely flavorless. Salsa was sour and also lacking flavor. The beans and Mexican Coke were good. Seriously save your money and go elsewhere where, even Del Taco. This is an honest review you can trust me.
google avatar

Deandre S.

Yelp
Dude was low key rude and made me a rice burrito very stingy with the meat , will with me he was ! took me five bites to be able to taste any asada.. and I noticed didn't have a hairnet on and kept swinging his hair to keep it out his face.. food nowadays is too expensive to be playing! My go to is normally the Boss burrito great customer service and the food is delicious off Anaheim! but they was close today so I seen the stars on this place and thought they must be good but no they need 2 1/2stars
google avatar

Ana E.

Yelp
Great food, great customer service and very clean!!!' Queso birrias were bomb!!! I didn't even take a pic because I was so anxious to eat it!!! The lengua meat was so tasty!! I would highly recommend it to everyone!!
google avatar

Charlyann M.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. The pictures and reviews were so good. The great: ample lot parking. The good: the service was friendly. The chips and guacamole were good. I love Mexican coke. The bad: The birra tacos were not my jam. The shell was thick. The meat was soft and juicy. But, even with the dip, it was flavorless. I was just overpowered by onion. It is tiny inside with 5 tables.
google avatar

Elle E.

Yelp
It's a hole in the wall that's just the kind we like. The food was delicious and we enjoyed every bit of it. Well seasoned meats and they were cooked perfectly. We ordered more than this but we were too hungry to take all pics. Just remember not to order when you are too hungry..... you tend to order more than what you can handle like we did.... So we had left overs.... They were eaten as soon as we got home tho....
google avatar

Nha T.

Yelp
I've been here several times and my experiences have been average. I had the baja shrimp tacos and the shrimp tasted dry and overcooked. Also the salsa that came with it was very sour so it didn't pair well together. The guacamole was ok, a bit mushy and flavorless. When you check in, you can redeem a free aqua fresca so I chose the mango flavor. It was watered down and did not have much mango flavor. One of the downsides here is that there isn't much seating available and they don't turn on the AC so it feels like sitting in a sauna. Since this restaurant is located in a large plaza, there is a good amount of parking available.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood and decided to try this restaurant with the catchy name. I ordered the tinga taquito plate with rice and beans. The presentation was very authentic to a restaurant in Mexico with the food plated in a traditional Mexican barro plate . The food was ready quickly and very delicious. The taquitos were nice and crunchy with great flavor . The beans and the rice were fresh and tasted home made. The restaurant was nice and clean. The owner was very welcoming, attentive and friendly. I would definitely recommend if you're looking for authentic Mexican food.

Yelp
You know that when its a little hole in the wall, it is going to be goooood!! 10/10!! To the welcoming customer service! My kids and I got one different thing from the menu. To start off your food is done like not even 10 minutes after seating. Got the bean, rice and cheese burrito, so yummy. 10/10. The chicken Tostada bowl.... THE CHICKEN, al carbon flavor!! Chefs kiss! Carne asada green wet burritos... from the meat, same flavor as the chicken one! The sauce not too spicy and so flavorful. The cheese birria tacos‍. The ambient is peaceful, no trouble with finding parking and so worth the 25-30 minute drive for us! 100% recommended! The price is affordable for the amount you get.

Yelp
I really hate writing this review because I have loved this place since it opened. The owner was super nice and always had a smile and happy greeting for every customer. Like he never met a stranger. I had not been I awhile and was happy to see them still there. I also want to try to support businesses who rent space and employ people. As I drove up I was no less than 3 taco joints on the sidewalk so I can understand how difficult it must be to operate under these circumstances. You must also make adjustments to make sure every guest who made the decision to choose you when there are so many options you must bring your A game. Be polite, be accommodating, help people have what they want, have excellent product. good is no longer competitive. Well lets just say La Changla failed me last nite. From the time we and yes I brought a friend, entered it was strange. no hello no greeting, no smiles and I thought ok they must be busy. One other couple in there than us. So I got over the greeting part and the no smiles part and the its not so comfortable in this small space the vibe was off. so I ordered a carne asada burrito. I asked for no rice so they kept the rice off, and so I asked to have some cheese on the burrito. the young woman said, It will be $3 dollars to add cheese. I looked at her and repeated $3 dollars? and she said, yes. and that was it. So I said, you know there are people selling tacos and burritos right outside your door. And she said nothing. I thought perhaps she might then say, ok, 1.50 for.a small side of cheese on a burrito. she said nothing. So I got the burrito and did not add the cheese and just thought, what a missed opportunity. One for her to be nice, two for her to make happy a paying customer who choose them for dinner tonight, and 3 she had a chance to make a customer who could come in a couple times a week if the food was right. She was not into me having it my way unless I forked over 3 bucks for a small side of cheese. Not to mention, the environment for me was not good. so whatever. I just won't come back. and the asada well lets just say some spices go a long way, even a little salt would help. it was bland. very bland. So not only was the food not great, the experience was bad too. so unfortunately I can find other places to get a burrito and yes, will put cheese on it the way I want and won't charge me 3 dollars for it. I walked into Northgate, and bought a pack of shredded Mexican cheese for 2.50 for the whole back and put it on the dang burrito myself. So I got my cheese and some bland asada. So in the end I got what I needed, and you did not get a returning customer. The options are to good out there to have bad food and bad service.

Yelp
It's Taco Tuesday, my husband and I wanted to try a new to us place. So here we are. Seems like a fast food type of place with food on the warming trays. The atmosphere very casual with Mexican music videos playing in the background adds to the place atmosphere. The service was good very polite and welcomed us as first time customers. I had the three taco with side of beans and rice. One asada taco, two chicken tacos. All three were well seasoned, moist not dry. The guacamole seemed like it was freshly made. The soft taco shells might have been made there. That's how soft the tacos shells were. If I am in the area I would eat there again.
google avatar

Willy T.

Yelp
This restaurant has good vibes! I really enjoyed the vibes and the music. I ordered a queso torta asada with everything for 11.99. It arrived it 5 minutes and came with a tomatillo salsa. It was freshly made and pretty hot - too hot to hold. I didn't get any utensils, but then again I am eating a sandwich... The cashier came to check in and I asked for and received a spoon, so the service is good. The bread is very thin and the salsa has a medium level of spiciness in my opinion. The queso is mostly on the outside of the bread. It has a really good texture but is pretty salty. Honestly there isn't a whole lot to write home about, but it's still pretty decent
google avatar

Krist S.

Yelp
Ordered with sour cream on burrito. No sour cream. The burrito is dry and sour cream could have saved it. Also called to add carne asada nachos. Dude answered and rudely said "hello." I asked "Is this a restaurant?" Said yeah. Asked to add nachos to my order. He was rude , didn't ask what name or order, just said yeah. Of course no nachos came with the food. Getting refund from grub hub and going somewhere else I can trust.
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
Service was good! The food was delicious! I got the 3 queso birria especial and they were bomb. The horchata was good too.

Yelp
Omg. Best wet burrito I have ever have. Fire. Great staff. Israel is fabulous as a person. Carne asada and wet burrito is all I can speak to now, but I will be coming back and back and back for more. Rice is light beans are flavorful meat is tender and delicious. 111/10

Yelp
I had heard the food was delicious so I had to try it. Love the name, La Chancla Ismael made today extra special. He provided us with delicious food and excellent service. When he found out it was my birthday you could hear Las Mañanitas in the background and he walked out with some flan. I would highly recommend this place for both the food and the service.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME. I'm always looking for great tacos, and this PROVIDED. the pollo asado has this amazing char, grilled almost cook to it. I loved LOVED it. I can have a whole bowl of the chicken. It's not greasy, wasn't salty, and was the perfect amount of meat in a taco. The plate itself was about 15$(ish). The rice is awesome. Beans--awesome. Thank you for your amazing food, La Chancla!

Yelp
CATERING ORDER REVIEW ONLY Company I work for has ordered from here at least twice - so far. Company-wide luncheon. And I gotta say, it is some bland, over cooked meat (asada/chicken) with a lot of fat and tendon in the cuts. Basic "Build Your Own Taco" Catering service at most. And the salsas provided - like they came from Baja Fresh or the likes of those "Mexican" places. Sin sazón, sin algún sabor realmente picante. Esta Mexicana esta decepcionada.
google avatar

Katrina C.

Yelp
Came here a couple months ago on a Sunday. The decor was nice. The restaurant was so empty though. My friends and I were a little concerned. Once we ordered and sat down a few customers joined us. Something quite surprising was that they had a food display kind of like your chinese restaurant type. I ordered the birria tacos which were alright. The consomme was delicious. One friend had the torta de asada (meat was fatty), and another friend ordered a few tacos (lackluster). The tortilla chips and salsa were good. The guacamole was great. If I'm in the area I would come back, but wouldn't go out of my way to return otherwise.
google avatar

Yelp
A hidden gem! Passed this place too many times and never noticed this hole in the wall. It wasn't until last week's ride to Taco Tuesday that I saw it. I brought it up and everyone decided to give it a try. From the road, it is another unassuming taqueria. Once inside, you get a better flavor for this place. The simple menu focuses their strengths into a handful of delicious dishes. Everyone in the group ordered something different and everyone was more than happy with their choice. The small things make the dishes their best. From the spicy salsa that comes with the homemade tortilla chips to the perfectly cooked rice & beans. It is an authentic Mexican meal.
google avatar

Daisy M.

Yelp
I ordered 4 tacos: birria, baja shrimp, chicarron, mole. I got 2 baja shrimp, mole, and carne asada taco. The mole was way too sweet and the baja shrimp was soggy. I basically threw it away. There was no wait and food came on time. With that said, never coming back here.

Yelp
Excellent service seems to be rare these days - but not at La Chancla! The young lady behind the counter was so extremely welcoming and friendly. She was happy to give me a rundown of the menu and all of the choices of meats. She even gave me a sample of the Tinga (I'm a wimp and can't do spicy anymore). Despite all of the wonderful choices I settled on the 3 Birria taco plate with consommé. I highly highly recommended it. I was blown away when I heard her say fresh tortillas were MADE TO ORDER so it would be a few minutes. So I ordered chips and guacamole. I even got a free Agua Fresca with my Yelp checkin! Here's the rundown : (1) the Birria tacos (con queso) were otherworldly delicious. The fresh made tortillas took them to another level. (2) Guac was creamy and fresh - a bargain at $5.99 (3) Mango Lime Agua Fresca was delicious and refreshing. My overall experience - amazing customer service AND delicious food! I'd give them 10 stars if I could. When I left, the hostess remembered and thanked me by NAME! Wow! I will happily go back again next time I'm in the area. My only regret is that I don't live closer!

Nicole D.

Yelp
Amazing food! We also ordered their churros and they were the freshest I have ever had and were very tasty! I highly recommend eating at La Chanclas!

Yukari K.

Yelp
We always order 2 or 3 a la cartes, beans, rice, and tortillas for friends' gatherings at my house at their request. Everybody loves them.
google avatar

Dietmar F.

Yelp
La Chancla offers up some good Mexican food. They make their own taco tortillas so I should have gone that way, but is was in the mood for a big carne asada burrito with the cheese melted on top. It was very good and very big but too much tomatillo sauce for me. Had a big Modelo, too bad no Negritas. My wife had the shrimp tacos, very tasty on their house made taco shells. Only bummer was no free chips and salsa. Still a good meal, reasonably priced, easy to park. We'll come again!
google avatar

Sharita F.

Yelp
I've lived across the drawer from La chancha for two years and i barely tried the food two weeks ago and fell in love. I was happy to see that if you bigger a burrito , they have one to the firefighters that were putting out the fires. Great food , beautiful restaurant and amazing service.

Yelp
Was ok, drinks was ok, food ok nothing special to go Bach to this restaurant I guess.....
google avatar

Yelp
This place is always clean, and provides fast service with a great ambiance. I love all the food, but I am a big fan of their rice and beans. I'm Mexican, so I take that very serious. I highly recommend this place. Delicious guisados. My favorite is the chicken tinga!
google avatar

Andre A.

Yelp
Very wonderful and kind staff. The serving size is pretty great but I wish it was a little tastier.

Yelp
Delicious! Their food was amazing and their staff was very friendly. Definitely recommended. Havent been to a restaurant in a minute and the ambiance was so refreshing!

Yelp
Amazing food quality and good service! We tried various tacos and they had a good selection!

Yelp
My boyfriend & I went here after he had found it on yelp today. We wanted to go out for a little date night & get some good Mexican food. It was our first time here & everything was freakin amazing !! From the warm & friendly service, awesome music, lovely ambiance to the incredible food!! We got chips & salsa to start, I got the 3 Queso Birria tacos with all the fixings & bomb consomé on the side. My bf got the Lengua burrito & absolutely loved it. Everything was so wonderful & we both can't wait to be back!
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
First time trying this place and the food did not disappoint. Ordered the Birria tacos they had a nice crispiness to the tortillas and flavorful Birria and dipping it into the consome made it that much tastier. Ordered a side of rice and beans which tasted authentic with a good portion size. The service was friendly and courteous I was greeted upon arriving and assisted pretty quickly. The ambiance is cozy with both indoor and outdoor seating. Check them out if you're in the area.
