3 Truly Untrodden South of France Getaways for Summer

"La Chassagnette, a hyper-seasonal fine dining but easy-going restaurant where you can work your way through a six course tasting menu featuring bright cabbage with caviar and smoked beetroot with bouillabaisse."

La Chassagnette

"Bulls grazing, pink flamingos haloed by sunlight, canals, rice fields and the Rhône delta: welcome to Camargue and more specifically to la Chassagnette, a former sheepfold refurbished in the shape of a modern mas. Chef gardener Armand Arnal has firmly dug his fork into the soil of the organic vegetable garden and orchard around the property. In addition to plants, the chef has no taboos from meat from the wild bulls, lamb from the neighbouring shepherd and fish from Grau-du-Roi fish auction… Armand crafts creative, often surprising and sometimes even disconcerting recipes, mingling acidic notes and home-made vinegars. Three hectares of flower and vegetable gardens, greenhouses, hives and orchards, together with a magnificent leafy patio – heavenly!" - Michelin Inspector

One of the most memorable meals we’ve had in a long time in an absolutely gorgeous setting. Every plate is like a poem. The ingredients are so simple yet so tastefully and creatively interpreted, the service was absolutely impeccable and we will carry the memories of an afternoon. spent there visiting the gardens and eating a delicious meal for a very long time. Our favorite moment was the pastry Chef coming out with a lemon pie and cutting us all a little slice and it tasted like heaven.

What a great meal. We were greeted with the most beautiful sunflower and lavendar fields. Once you walk past the estate you get to the restaurant with a beautiful outdoor and indoor seating. Out of the two available menus, We chose the carnivor menu so to say. The menu is broken down into weeks of Harvest based on what’s available and fresh in the estate. We dined their at week 29 Harvest, so the aubergine was fresh fresh fresh! A 6 course meal, with a palate cleanser, pre dessert, dessert, and post dessert! We commuted an hour for this meal and definitely worth every bite.

Service, garden and atmosphere were great. Delicious desserts. The vegetable tasting menu was good but did not surprise me.

Fabulous. Incredible food served directly from the restaurant’s gardens. Beautiful setting and attentive but calm service.

I think there's too much focus on complexity and technique, rather than making delicious food. The desserts were tasty!

One of the most wonderful dining experiences I’ve had. You are handed a tea upon arrival and invited to take a tour of the gardens where they grow some of the food you’re about to have. The outside table setting is dreamy, under a canopy of branches and you’re not seating too close to other parties. You’ve a choice of veg or omnivore menu and believe me, either or is just as good as the other one! The price range of the wines is ample and suits all pockets. The only remark would be they served an almond desert which wasn’t too flavourful…it was either missing honey or a pinch of salt.

Was really looking forward to our visit here. The garden is enormous and pretty much all of it is edible! 2 tasting menus available... one purely from the garden with no meat or fish and one with. We went for the one with and it was excellent. Inventive and creative use of garden edibles to complement the meat and cleanse the palate between courses. All in all an excellent 3 hour lunchtime spent. Loads of variety in the courses and definitely one to check out. The chef makes great use of what's around him.

Had the six course meal with the wine pairing and it was delicious. Great service and also an amazing garden outside. Pro tip: use the mosquito spray that they provide!

Yelp
This a very late review. We were there in Summer 2016 touring Camargue for a day. What can I say? The grounds were intimate, elegant and simple. Of course, we had lunch outside under a pergola. The food was cooked and presented in an Alice Water approach. Every course was simple with an accent on the ingredients - from the tomatoes in a salad, to the small leg of lamb (imagine! We asked for a doggy bag.) and the meringue with peaches (to die for). The perfection was the combination of a great chef and the quality of all ingredients growing in the vegetable garden and orchard directly adjacent to the restaurant (yes I stole a couple of tomatoes and strawberries!!!). The staff was attentive and the chef super friendly. An afternoon I will remember for years to come...

Yelp
The 2 stars are for the amazing decor and the menu. The missing 3 stars are due to the detestable "directeur de salle" and the awful service we received. The staff seemed nice but never provided the help requested. We are still waiting for the water bowl for the dog (requested 4 times, a service granted to the table behind us, but not one we were worthy of). Our moving around to get out of the sun (noon, 30*C) was met rudely. Anyway, we will never return. Not that we were asked to our even told "good bye". So much potential, all of it wasted!
