11 Affordable Takeout Restaurants in Houston | Eater

"This Northside hidden gem (formerly called Unos P’nches Tacos) is known for its exceptional handmade flour tortillas, delicious breakfast tacos, and fresh horchata — not to mention the eye-catching grackle art on the restaurant’s exterior. The picadillo tacos can’t be beat, but definitely add a bowl of menudo or tamales if it’s the weekend." - Vox Creative

I came here yesterday morning. It was right next to my veterinary clinic. Authentic Mexican cuisine, small hole in the wall restaurant. The service was impeccable ,wonderful workers. Lastly, the portion sizes were not as big as I hope they were, but the food is delicious.! Meal for one was less than $16.

Google
The drink was about $14.change and it was Small and not great.Salsa is spicy just spicy not much flavor. I got chilaquiles and I mean it's chilaquiles the only problem is the beef I guess it's a Hisp thing to overcook our beef idk. I got these pieces of birrote with my chilaquiles and idk what they add to them but it made it seem I was eating raw dough.

Google
Pretty good mexican food place. You will find a mix of authentic and more americanized Mexican food in a low-profile cafeteria style. They have a little bar offering cocktails. The portions are generous, service is good. I would come back for sure. The parking lot is big enough for the size of the place. Updated: for all of you that wonder about an authentic dish, they serve "carne de cerdo con verdolagas" not every restaurant offer that.

Sabrina Garcia

Google
Food was delicious. The beans are phenomenal 🔥the barbacoa tacos 💋🤌🏻 10/10 try this place you will not regret it.

Google
We were waited on by three different people. Finally, the lady who waited on us was always checking in on us to make sure we were good! The service, well, it stank but the food was good. I don’t know how many times I asked the servers if they would take my payment, but kept getting ignored. Long story short, would definitely come back but I think this time I’d like a lady server over a male server as they were either deaf or just hard at hearing.

Google
We've been here twice, and the food has been good. We got the tinga gordita, tinga empanada, and an order of quesabirria. The salsa was good, quite spicy. Will definitely go back.

Jorge Salazar

Google
Order pancakes meal, and they gave me beans instead of pancakes, I am 20 min from them, and Tatiana states they do not sell pancakes. I do not understand why this was not told to be when I ordered the kids' breakfast plate.

Sofía Vera

Google
The service was good as well as the food, the decoration inspired by Mexico City, I recommend this place if you like Mexican food

The Thumbs Critic ..

Yelp
Thumbs Up: The service is fantastic! I was greeted and seated immediately after opening the door. Thumbs Up: The waitstaff was friendly and attentive throughout my visit. Thumbs Up: The sauces are amazing! I can't decide which is spicier--the green or the orange sauce--but both are excellent. Thumbs Up: The table chips are served with a mild, runny salsa for those who can't handle the heat of the other sauces. Thumbs Up: The music was at a reasonable volume--not too loud. Thumbs Up: The plating was visually appealing, and my burrito was absolutely delicious.

Yelp
First time trying it for lunch. As soon as you walk in you're greeted so that's always nice. When we went we had to wait a bit since tables were being cleaned all at once which was odd. When we got seated one of 3-4 waitress came to see if we needed something to drink but we weren't ready as it was our first time trying the place. Speaking of the wait staff. It would be best if they're given sections vs all of them working the whole place and being asked about orders taken non stop by a diff waitress. It took a bit for them to bring our chips and salsa. Which the only green salsa you get wasn't that great. I will say they give you some frijoles refritos that weren't bad. When we finally decided on a drink which BTW they're not cheap. Me thinking oh this will be good for the price I mean. So I got something called Friday Khalo. When my drink came out it was a huge let down.It was also not that great tasting. I saw other tables getting bottles of salsa so I asked for them. I can eat a good salsa but these were just extremely spicy. I'm not a huge salsa verde person but it was the better one of both. I didn't get a good pic of the other person plate as you can see but it was some type of beef in some chile pasilla sauce. That beef was tough and the sauce spicy so they only took a few bites. I ordered the chilaquiles and idk if it's a Hispanic thing where we overcook our beef and being so thin it just made it extra tough. All in a all,for the prices and food it's a place I wish I'd love but not returning. Oh yeah! A fam sat next to us they came in maybe 5-10min after us. They sat their quite a long LONG...time. They ate more chips than anything. When we were done eating we saw the man in the group barely getting his food.

Yelp
This one has been on my radar for a very long time. Great tacos and great customer service. Food: the Texas are huge. I mean 2 or 3 will fill you up. I got 5 to go to try a variety of 23.00. About 4.75 a taco but they ate huge so it makes sense. The barbacoa was so fresh and tasty. The sausage and egg was great. The fajita is okay. Needs more seasoning or a better cut of meat. I will definitely try more. Also the red and green sauces are phenomenal! Customer service is great too. I'll definitely come back again. Easy 5 stars.

Yelp
Nice Tex-mex place in an unassuming area. They give free chips and salsa when you sit down which is amazing. I ordered the queso birria tacos which tasted great. Melty cheese, nice bowl of consume, and onions cilantro and lime all made the tacos a good experience. Definitely would recommend as long you don't mind a food coma afterwards.

Yelp
The El Taco Man truck usually parked in a nearby lot adjacent to La Chingada seems to have disappeared, so I decided to check out the latter to try beef fajita tacos. The tacos here are huge and really, really good - the onion and cilantro, along with guacamole and salsa verde, made for some great tacos. However, I was not a fan of the horchata, which lacked cinnamon. It made me wish I had gone to Taqueria Arandas for horchata. (Haha) The service here was really good. If you're ever near The Heights, definitely check this place out.

Yelp
This place is a hidden treasure. This is far better than standard fare tex-mex. Everything was fresh and flavorful. I was astounded by the length of the menu considering it's a very small establishment. The chips are great with a green salsa, some black bean dip and also two hot sauces in squeeze bottles. All were really good. My frozen margarita was delicious. I got The Angel which is barbacoa beef tacos. So much flavor and so tender! I will definitely be back. They do have some pricey things on the menu but my dinner entree was only $15 which I think is very reasonable.

Yelp
Insanely delicious tacos de birria!!! Stuffed full, didn't expect the 3 to fill me up but I couldn't even finish them, and the consume is the most savory ever! Really cute interior, this is the small, authentic type of place I've been looking for in the area. Lotería and historically themed w/ friendly service :) Happy hour & lunch menu is great as well! Pictured is the beef fajita tacos with charro beans, pretty good too but will be back for the birria tacos and homemade salsas for sure!

Yelp
Ate here because the restaurant we were going to go to was unexpectedly closed. We enjoyed chilaquiles and the aguas Frescas. The food service was slow but the waitresses were very friendly. Husband had the tacos and enjoyed them. The pastor was good.

Yelp
Just ordered delivery from this spot an hour ago. I ran right to Yelp to write a review. Absolutely delicious food. I ordered a burrito and two tacos, and they were tremendous. The tacos were on a flour tortilla and the size was definitely larger than expected. The burrito was a TAD on the smaller side for the price, but the flavor was exceptional. Their salsas are excellent too. I will definitely be ordering from here again. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Reasonable prices in a quaint, clean café. Service was good with a large amount of food for the price.

Yelp
One of the few places that does breakfast tacos all day! As I scour places to do my taco Tuesday fix or just taco fix in general, I find myself calling this spot to place my order for breakfast tacos since they always have them available. And they are quite dope! They are large and filling with a good cheese pull, put some of that green salsa on it and you're good to go. Of course I've done other tacos here as well. They do a mean barbacoa and pastor. The fajita/steak is pretty tasty as well. To-go orders are made fairly quickly and they always give me extra salsa and napkins when I ask for it. I haven't tried their other items but I shall get myself to do it one of these days. Of course it's been difficult cause I can't stop with the tacos. And I don't know if I'm ever gonna stop!

Yelp
It was delicious definitely recommend this Place Family oriented restaurant will definitely go again.

Yelp
Down to earth and neighborhood feel at La Chingada. Came here for breakfast and opted for the chilaquiles. Massive portions and all the right toppings. Came topped with cream, queso fresco, and onions. Side of refried beans to go with your mountain of salsa tossed chips with over easy eggs. The beef was slightly tough and the salsa was a tad too salty. It's home cooking here, and there's no place like home sometimes. I'd come back to try to the tacos as it looks like they have different specials for each day of the week
google avatar

Yelp
Great Tacos !! Chicken enchilada was just as good and the service was awesome. Every time I have been to La Chingada it's was the best .. this one is on my list !
google avatar

Rose W.

Yelp
I went here tried they tacos. I ran across them.on my tmobile dinner rewards app. The one I never had before was A Tinga Taco, it's basically smokey and spicy flavored chicken (shredded). I also kept it simple and got Me a lime jarrito which I did not know they had because it was at the bottom. I came on Tuesday tacos are $3 each on this day. They defined was inspired by they ancestors and it shows in flavors and decoration! The decor was beautiful The service calm and easy!

Yelp
Located off 45 and calvacade you'll find this authentic Mexican restaurant! They have lunch specials for about $10 and we ordered the fajita beef tacos on flour and the chicken enchiladas which both were too good! The amount of food given is def worth the price and the charro Bean's are to die for! Caution the orange colored salsa is great sweet but will def burn a hole in your stomach lol jk. We tried the two house margaritas which on Thursday is two for 1 at $7 which were ok. I've had better and also ordered a coffee which was great up until I had a second cup refill to go and was charged for a second cup... -____- but overall 4 out 5 stars. Food is great, fresh, and most importantly authentic!
google avatar

Jordan M.

Yelp
I order mini tacos with shredded chicken, chips and salsa and my friend got the Birria tacos. The shredded chicken came in a red marinade. It was pretty average. Definitely could've used some more flavor. The chips are salsa were pretty good. It comes with a Verde salsa and some of the chips were definitely over seasoned/salted. The star of the show was the Birria tacos. OMG. Best I've had in my life. They were so flavorful and packed with delicious cheese. Grilled onions and cilantro on the side with a perfect consommé. Definitely worth it. Without that I'd give this place a 3 but those birria tacos took it over the edge. Will definitely be back for them.

Yelp
Could've sworn I've written a review for this place before. But in any event.... GO GET THESE TACOS!! Stop questioning yourself. Believe the reviews. La Chingada is legit. I've mostly come for breakfast but all menu items are tasty. Chorizo, the green salsa, tortillas, carne asada, tortas & even the beans are just delish. And what makes this place even better is their service! I've always been welcomed with a smile. Once made a quick drop in for lunch & it was blazing hot. The young lady gave me a free lemonade because my order was taking a little longer than usual. The decor is nice & they keep the area clean. The parking is a little tight but it's worth it. They also have good lunch deals. Check it out if you're in the area. Yelp on my friends!

Yelp
Everything was too salty- beans, pastor, rice Torta was interesting with queso fresco and without avocado Gordita was good but was thin only slightly thicker than a regular tortilla Agua fresca de pepino y limón was good. Horchata was good too but was really sweet Service was quick and everybody was nice. Food was just not good

Yelp
Almost went with a 4 and had to upgrade to a 5 because I couldn't think of anything this place could do better---great food, great prices, great service, great drinks. It's not fancy or anything so if you want a fine dining experience you may want to pick another place (plenty to choose from it seems), but for an easy dinner or great lunch this place hit the spot. Being that it was walking distance from our hotel it was super convenient for us. I really liked the gordita, the tacos pastor, and the salsas. I ate way too much. My brother wanted to come back for one final meal here before we left town and we did, too bad I was too full from an earlier lunch elsewhere to partake much that time! He tried the torta that time and really bragged about it.

Edwin P.

Yelp
If you ready to pay 30 dollars for 3 quesadillas then go right ahead! That place esta pa la chingada!! Super disappointed
google avatar

Olga S.

Yelp
I can't believe this place is not the number one in Houston!!! I can't wait to come back the food is incredible delicious hot and the staff is attentive but not pushy. Best food ever!!!
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
I went here because I was in the area after shopping at the market and the reviews were good. I wanted breakfast tacos so that's why I came. I regret it now because my bill was $127 and we mainly only got tacos! This place does some serious price gouging, they want to charge $7 for orange juice ! I could see if it was like top of line fresh squeezed but it was not. Also we paid $8 for a small cup of store bought queso. The tacos were decently priced but they were nothing amazing at all (I could make better at home) . Next time I'll go somewhere else or just eat at home . It was not worth the price we paid. Also make sure ask for the receipt before you pay! I did not get a receipt until after I paid and I ended up paying double tip! They include gratuity already . Service was very very slow .

Yelp
Been many times but i guess today showing up at 810 when they close at 9 was rude to them. They called us rude as we were leaving. They didn't tend to us the whole time so i guess us having to ask for things when we're at a restaurant was rude. (we asked for water, sour cream and a to go box). My teenage son and his friend were saying please and thank you the whole time. Not one time was anyone at our table disrespectful until we went to pay when the waitress called us rude. The waitress was rude and disrespectful. When i asked for someone's information she told us she was the owner but wouldn't give us a card to talk to someone who might care if a company is treating people like that during operating hours. I could understand if we showed up late and they were closing but it was 810 on a Friday night. we had time to eat and be paying by 900 when they closed. The whole thing was ridiculous and out of line. If they didn't want customers we would have been fine had they just said that when we walked up.
google avatar

Elena V.

Yelp
Parking is limited so please arrive with patience. However, once we found parking and went inside we were seated immediately. No chips and salsa were offered until just before the food came out. Once the food arrived it was absolutely worth the wait. The food did not disappoint. Do yourself a favor and get there!

Yelp
Meh. Not bad. Good drinks and agua frescas. Food was +/- Service was well-meaning however they were understaffed because they didn't expect to be so busy. I won't fault them too much for that.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
While visiting Houston we stayed just a block over from this small Mexican restaurant and was drawn in by their name which basically means (in a vulgar way in Spanish) to brush off or be casual about something. It's more of an attitude rather than a feeling. We came in for breakfast and it was a safe bet with the tacos. Tortillas were fresh so no complaints there and the chorizo and egg taco we got was pretty good. Since it was breakfast we opted to have some coffee. The coffee had a flavoring that I could not pin down - it almost tastes like there is chocolate added to it? If you are in to that then the coffee will be your jam. Service was a bit slow but could have been that it was a weekday morning and the crowd inside was light. I could have done with being checked on a little more but eh our meal was easy and fast to get down before we continued to explore more of Houston.

ReyCar B.

Yelp
This place has been over talked about the location by cavalcade us too expensive the staff does not seem to care about you until someone tells them hey someone is here the food ok lacking some flavor they sure do take their time on taking your order and bringing the food out to you it is over priced it was a 3 of us and we paid over $100 and did not order much 3 tacos flautas sope a michelada agua Fresca and margarita small over priced we were asked once if we need anything I think we would of paid less at ninfas or el tiempo and been treated better
google avatar

Marlan F.

Yelp
Friendly service! Great food! Hadn't had food this good since we came from the valley.
google avatar

Larry J.

Yelp
Hard to find great Migas, they are by far the best in the area I've found so far. For a quick breakfast served by quick/attentive staff with a good vibe, this place is hard to beat.

Stephen B.

Yelp
Don't waste your money. All the Mexican and taco places around this area stay away from this one. I've been in the neighborhood for 30+ years and this food is trash. I had enchiladas, she had fish tacos. Nope. Pick any place in the vicinity other than this and you will be happy. Save your money and disappointment.

Brian B.

Yelp
I just had an empanada, and it was easily the best I've ever had. You couldn't find anything better from a French bakery. Light, fluffy, crispy, perfect consistency

John M.

Yelp
Food used to be amazing but has really gone downhill, especially their breakfast tacos. We've ordered take-out here several times and found items missing nearly every time as well. For the issues, it doesn't make sense that their menu prices are what they are. Staff are very nice though.
google avatar

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when you drive up to it, in fact the sign in front says Vet Clinic. Weird, huh? Well, we decided to try it based on the good Yelp reviews and I'm glad we did, Just look at my picture. My carne asada tacos were delish! Really well seasoned good cut of beef with little to no fat. Yum Tacos were made without cilantro, but plenty provided once we asked for it. I only giving 4 stars instead of 5, because while the sauce was fresh and tasty, it was way, way, way too hot to enjoy. I will definitely return! Yummo!

Karina M.

Yelp
Amazing service! Food is delicious, hot and fresh! Decor / ambiance is related to the Mexican Bingo. Space is small inside but not very crowed about 15 tables. "Huevos Al gusto" - ordered them sunny side up and that's exactly what I got. Beans are seasoned perfectly not too salty or unflavored. Received 3 good size bacon strips that were cooked perfectly crisp. "Mexican Hamburger" - order your egg to your liking. Delicious fluffy and soft bun. Lettuce, tomato and ham included. "2 tacos de pastor" - They ask if you want pineapple and onion. The pineapple was not overpowering. Gave it a great flavor.
google avatar

Ruben A.

Yelp
Service was amazing, waitress was constantly checking on us. The mole tasted as if it was made from scratch. The tortillas were a little cold/ and had a almost hard texture though. The Chapultepec taco was great other than the tortilla. Overall would try again, might have just been an off day.
google avatar

Yelp
QuesoBirria Tacos= Heaven on Earth! Stopped by for lunch on our way to El Bolillo, and so glad we did. Lively, clean, comfortable spot, with nice staff. Ordered the sope and queso birria tacos. While I did like my freshly made, tasty sope, the quesobirria tacos became the main focus, very quickly! It may take a moment for your food to arrive, and it is worth the wait, as everything was just cooked, and delicious. Good portions, and go well with a maragarita or a canned Coke. Breakfast is served all day, too, which is great. I'll be back soon for a margarita and some potato, egg and bean breakfast tacos! Don't Miss This Place!
google avatar

Yanira G.

Yelp
Honestly the outside is a bit sketchy, but once you go inside, the atmosphere is very welcoming. The servers were all very friendly and the food was delicious!! Will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Solid authentic affordable Mexican food experience! Decided to try this place - which is tucked away in the heights. I dined in on a Saturday night and it was pretty empty at the time. Waitress was super attentive and kind, she even threw in a free margarita for us! * food quality - was honestly just okay, it tasted a bit bland. I ordered the quesadilla and it just was meh - not enough flavor. The enchiladas were also relatively flavorless. * drink quality - margs were pretty good! Super cheap and relatively strong (only $5 for the house marg)! Overall - food and drinks are average but they are CHEAP! If you are looking for a new authentic Mexican place near the heights I'd definitely give this a go. Even though the food was average I really loved the experience of eating here. It had an authentic "hidden gem" feel that really makes you happy. They also have a TON of options so I'd definitely give this a shot.
google avatar

El Rauncho Grande G.

Yelp
OK, I'll admit it: We came here because we were curious about the naughty name, but having tried the great food, and enjoyed the friendly service and funky fun decor and horn-heavy música Mexicano, estamos encantada! It will take a few return trips to try all the things on the menu that appeal, but the tacos that your humble yet infallible reviewer and his companion tried this time were excellent, and nicely accented by house-made salsas (the verde nicely picoso). We nearly passed it by, laughing at the street sign (which reads P'nches Tacos), but then realized that that actually that *was* our destination. The staff wore T-shirts with both names on them, so apparently La Chingada is the home of P'nches Tacos...or whatever. Who cares. Just keep bringing them! You'll be served at your table but then you pay at the counter in your way out. Enjoy! El Rauncho Grande
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
Waitress was awesome! That salsa was FIRE... if you like Hot Salsa give them a try. Chips were warm & tasty.

Teresa R.

Yelp
The food was great, portions were good. The hostess and our server not so great. The hostess said it would be about a 45 minute wait and asked for my phone number. My husband and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary and wanted to make the most of our evening so since there was a wait, we went next door to the pool hall. Surprisingly we were called back to the restaurant in 20 minutes, which was a good thing but as we walked in 3-5 minutes later the hostess made a very sarcastic remark saying that she was about to give our table away when there was literally no one waiting. Then our server was probably the slowest person ever!! And very inattentive. I wish we would've had the server from the table next to us. Now he was awesome! And he had a party of 8! Our server kept disappearing. It literally took FOREVER to get our food and then our check! When we were finished, and the server next to us even noticed how impatient we were getting, he ended up helping us. There is so much more that our server did not do ~vs~ what she did do. I appreciate the sever next to us who helped us out more. Needless to say she really messed up because I am in the service industry myself and usually tip 30-40%. So if that is why she was so inattentive to us because she "thought " we would not tip, well she got what we wanted . She really messed up on a good tip. Like I said I wish we had the other guy serve us. Luckily the food was awesome! I'm willing to try again but I'll be trying the other location and see what happens.

Yelp
Stopped by for some breakfast and do some light work and I will say that the food and service was great here. Definitely recommend stopping by and trying it if on the area.

Yelp
I love this place!! The food is so authentic. I hadn't been able to find a place that serves Mexican breakfast as good as they do back home (in the 956) until I found La Chingada. The coffee could probably use some help but we got chilaquiles that were just delicious. I love that the ambiance is cool enough but also genuine enough that I see my people enjoying our food there. I also love that it's small, homely, and located in a non-gentrified neighborhood but close enough to The Heights.
google avatar

Mooshi B.

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast tacos, had the chicken fajita and egg w/chorizo plus these guys make all their tortillas handmade, so when you come here expect a bit longer wait because they will cook up your wonderful meal and make sure you are getting the very best food experience. It's a bit far for me to come here but Wow!! I can certainly say that this place just blew me away with their authentic food. thank you!
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
Unassuming storefront near I45 inside the loop. Not a fantastic area but going into the store, definitely a feel that if it survived this long, the food must be decent. We got the recommended items here; empanada plate ($10 big fried dough item and rice and beans) along with all pastor, barbacoa, and beef fajita tacos ($3.5/each). The food tastes authentic and solid; the tacos had what tasted like homemade tortillas. The meat was pretty tasty. Overall, somewhere we could go back to but we've have much better and much worse tacos.

Yelp
Hole in the wall and divey. I love these places, and it didn't disappoint. The consommé for the birria tacos is just as delicious as the Quesa tacos themselves
