La Chiva Loca Review - Downey - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"La Chiva Loca in Downey specializes in Guadalajara staples like pozole, goat birria, and, of course, tortas ahogadas. These tortas are made with an extra firm birote salado that gets nicely chewy after taking a cannonball dive into hot tomato salsa. The red sauce is deceivingly spicy and manages to seep into every bit of your torta as the bread absorbs the salsa like a sponge. The pickled red onions on top also add a nice acidic bite to La Chiva’s tender, slow-cooked carnitas and beef. Most torta ahogada shops in town will stick to meat fillings, but another Jalisco classic that loves taking a swim in salsa de tomate is milky panela cheese. La Chiva’s panela torta ahogada comes with thick slabs of white cheese that serve as yet another porous vehicle for spicy salsa (yes, it’s a spongy cheese in some spongy bread). The final result is a perfect bite of bread, queso, and salsa that will have you forgetting all about that 9 a.m. conference call you powered through this morning. photo credit: Matt Gendal" - Sylvio Martins

This was my favorite Chiva Loca, compared to the others, until this past visit. I asked for tacos dorados de papa con carne and to my disappointment, the tacos weren't fresh. The potato was cold and hard. It seemed to me they had refried old tacos. I don't think I'll be going back to that particular spot 🫤

The ambiance is warm and inviting, striking the perfect balance between elegant and cozy. The staff was incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the food they were serving.

I googled best birria tacos near by because I was craving some birria tacos & these quesabirria tacos here were freaking amazing if you in the area of South Gate is a must try!

Waitress somewhat friendly, but not quite. Fast service. Disgusting food. The bread in my torta ahogada was the hardest I have ever been served and taste weird. It was definitely not a fresh piece bread. And it was more of swimming in juice torta (or torta soup) then an actually torta ahogada. Will not be coming back and do not recommend.

Heard their jericallas were pretty authentic. Purchased 3. Very similar to the ones in Guadalajara. Thankfully they were the right amoof sweet. Will be going again for sure!!!!!

This place is horrible. Tortas are stale and salsa is bland with no Flavor. Hard tacos are soked in old oil as you can taste it. Service stinks as the ladies are rude and take orders wrong. When informing them to repeat your order they say they do it their way. Horrible! And cherry on top, they do not inform they only take CASH! they wait till they bring your bill and with a smart remark let you know they have a an ATM and I was told I should be prepared with cash. Older lady really has no education. NEVER COMING BACK....

Very tasty food. Low key but food was worth the drive.

Paid for some fried tacos with meat and only got bean tacos with no meat. They sprinkled pieces of meat only. I guess their saving money by not putting meat on the tacos. Needless to say I won't be buying food here anymore.
