The 11 Best Croissants In Los Angeles, Ranked - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The true star at this French bakery on Melrose is something called a Mazou, a cross between a kouign amann and a croissant that looks like a cinnamon roll bun that went to finishing school. But the basic croissant is good, too, with glossy bands of browned dough bent into a tight, classic crescent. It looks like it could be a little burnt, but no—this croissant has great crunch, even layers, and a pillowy, moist interior. You’d be more than happy to find this on a breakfast table at an expensive hotel in Paris." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder, brant cox

La Chouquette - Review - Fairfax - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The true star at this French bakery on Melrose is something called a Mazou, a cross between a kouign amann and a croissant that looks like a cinnamon roll bun that went to finishing school. But La Chouquette's croissants are very good, too, with glossy bands of browned dough bent into a tight, classic crescent. They also do a variety of savory turnovers, tarts, and other Euro-tastic pastries, too. You’d be more than happy to find any of them on a breakfast table at an expensive hotel in Paris." - Garrett Snyder

Coming right at their last hour was surely my mistake. Yeah as you might have expected, I could barely see anything left. But being around the area just triggered me to try my luck in case I got some nice findings! It's interesting that the moment you entered the bakery, it felt like totally different vibes from the busy hectic street where it's located. Simple and gorgeous. As per my usual, my most go-to for first trial would be almond croissant. Call me lucky, I got the last one and it's even no more on the showcase so great that I asked! Despite surviving the day, which I could imagine the pastry had sit for hours there, it's still crispy and flaky. The almond paste inside was luscious and came in right proportion. Plenty of crunchy almond on top, which was surely the creme de la creme. Would probably give it a 5 star if only I had it reheated and enjoyed it warm.

Google
Flaky and buttery pastries! Raspberry and raisin swirls were amazing, nutella filled pastry was to die for. Almond croissant needs a little work it was not as flaky as the other pastries. Little on the pricier side but totally worth it.

Google
Cute little French bakery with delicious baguettes 🥖 and viennoiseries 🥐 and at very competitive prices for the quality that you get especially in LA! The pastries were almost all sold out when we got there but we be back to try more of those. Merci to the sweet staff & keep up the yummy work;)

Google
All the pastries looked delicious, and it was not too sweet, and the chocolate was chewy, making it enjoyable to eat. Recommend this shop if you love chocolate desserts.

We sat outside and enjoyed our pastries and desserts. They have a long cinnamon stick that is delicious. Croissant is delicious as well but the desserts were a little heavy. My preferences were the croissant cinnamon stick. Not a lot of seating and the seats are metal. I’m not very comfortable.

Google
This was totally unexpected, but, this place has the best vanilla latte I’ve ever had, hands down. Everything I’ve eaten has been phenomenal as well. I LOVED the almond croissant.

Google
This pastry shop transported me with their French deliciousness. Oozing with passion, from the presentation of their store to the kind and devoted workers, this place has left a mark. I will be back. The quality ingredients (many, if not all, I believe imported) under the masterful skill of their workers had me greedily wanting more (and I got two pastries, a baguette, and coffee). Selflessly I shared with my roommate and WOW, all of our senses were engaged and satisfied. We were still savoring the experience long after consuming these luxurious pleasures.

Google
Delicious pastries in an inviting setting. The service was welcoming. I definitely will come back here on my next visit to West Hollywood.

Yelp
It's been a minute since I came across another French bakery since so many just don't hit the spot in LA. Service was fantastic. I'm assuming Eden was the young woman helping me and she was so sweet and kind enough to name all the available pastries since I was a first timer. Everything honestly looked so good but I went with a croissant ($4.50), lemon tart ($7.50), and baguette ($4.50). They have a solid croissant. It's light and fluffy inside, although a bit softer on the outsdie than I like, it still had a good crisp bite to it. It also wasn't dry but also not greasy or overly buttered. The lemon tartlette though was my favorite of today and one of the best I've had. The filling is itself tart and refreshing, not too runny but very creamy. And the crust is flaky and soft. The baguette sadly I did not like as much as I hoped but it's still good. A nice crunch when squeezed but the inside was a bit too dense. Overall, everything was enjoyable and I will gladly return

Yelp
Quick service in the morning. They make the breads in front of you...fresh and handmade everday!!! They speak french...Authentic enough for u? Lol such a cute place to have a coffee and croissant. Street metered Parking and and parking-lot at the back.

Yelp
Best Nutella croissant, love the crisp. Exceptional crisp actually, but I hate the parking in the area yuck

Yelp
Croissants and quiches and coffee oh my! This place is the real deal. I've never been able to try everything I've wanted to here because they tend to sell out pretty early and their hours are very limited, but the items I have tried (regular and almond croissants, pain au chocolat and various quiches) have been legit! You can also watch the baker at work through the windows at the back of the small café.

Yelp
charming French café exudes warmth and authenticity from the moment you step through its doors. With a focus on traditional craftsmanship and culinary artistry, it's no surprise that locals and visitors alike flock here for a taste of France. The star of the show? Undoubtedly, the freshly baked croissants, flaky delights from scratch. Pair your pastry with a perfectly brewed espresso or a velvety latte, and you have the recipe for a truly blissful morning ritual. Yet, it's not just the food that sets this café apart; it's the ambiance. With its cozy seating, and the gentle murmur of French chatter in the background Delish! Must try

Yelp
One of our favorite pastry shops in Los Angeles. They have incredible croissants and their cakes to order are amazing.

Yelp
Hmm maybe I just visited at the wrong time (a Friday at around 11 am) because it was slim pickings at that point. Still was able to try a few things. Blueberry tart had silky smooth light custard with plump & ripe blueberries on top. Wasn't a huge fan of the raspberry eclair because the cream cheese on it was a bit too overpowering. Quite underwhelmed on the croissants as they weren't flaky at all and instead were overly chewy. Bakery has communal small cafe vibes and I can see it being a place where locals might go for a low-key cafe outing.

Yelp
Another visit? Why not. I can't seem to move past the MAZOU and BAGUETTE. These are excellent and does not disappoint. Tried their PISTACHIO ECLAIR and it was awesome. This might have been a seasonal flavor? Pistachio Macaron was also very good. And you can't go wrong with Chocolate Macaron, right?

Yelp
Food: Just TRY to control yourself, I dare you! Okay, let's talk croissant...buttery, flaky, chocolatey perfection. I was mesmerized watching them being made, by hand, through the window to the kitchen. My oat latte was hot and delicious, perfect punch of espresso. Served to me in a, prepare thyself...NOT in a paper cup! Call me old school...but THIS is the way to enjoy your first cup of the day. Service: Knowledgeable, kind, efficient, and FRENCH! Don't get me wrong, I adore my eclectic city...but it was so cool to hear the language of love as I unwrapped another layer of my delight and licking the butter from my lips. Ambiance: Small but not crowded, a few tables inside, a few out. Folks aren't bringing office work here so you'll find a seat in a few minutes, if you wait at all. I might only recommend covering the beautiful pastries on the counter. This is Melrose Avenue after all...when the door opens, the occasional fly finds its way in.

Yelp
Really nice cafe. I got a hazelnut praline eclair and a chocolate croissant. The former was really nice and light with a very good amount of hazelnut flavor. I could eat 10. The croissant was not my type of croissant (not bad just not what I prefer). The croissant is insanely light probably one of the lightest I've had. Biting into it was like biting into a cloud. If you're into that you'll love this. I like my croissants a little more well done/bien cuit so you get a crisp shattery crust which this one didn't have so much. I think butter flavor was a little lower than I like it as well. Definitely not a bad croissant but didn't scratch my personal itch. If you want a lighter croissant tho maybe this is right up your alley

Yelp
Pastries are so delicious!! Made fresh and made so beautifully!!! The chefs are so friendly and happy to see you!!! That really made my day. Oh, I I think we chatted with some movie stars from France?

Yelp
Fresh and delicious pastries. The chocolate is rich and creamy. Berry tartlettes are light with fresh fruit. The kindest employees and cute place Mazou and Nutella Croissant are by far one of my favorites!

A D.

Yelp
Wow!! This place is great. Saw the viral Crookie online and had to try. The pastry is flaky and buttery, and the cookie is gooey and rich! Absolute winner. The ham and cheese croissant was also delicious, although a bit small. The staff were super helpful and friendly, and the shop itself was colorful and inviting. Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
My co-worker( who is French, btw) and I were very impressed! From the baguette to the variety of croissants( both savory and sweet) and the desserts, everything was delicious and transports me back to my trip to Paris! I will be coming back here for sure!!!

Yelp
Their specialty mazou was amazing!! All the layers and the lamination was excellent. Don't skip out on this. To heat up the quiche, they used a microwave. Would've been better if they had a toaster function. The crust sadly became soggy after it was served. Flavor of the ham quiche was great tho. The pistachio cream puff tasted like uncooked hard dough. Something was off.. don't know if it was a bad batch or if it's always like that. I'd avoid at all costs. For their coffee, they don't have a proper espresso machine, it's a nespresso type machine where you push a button. It didn't bother me and my americano still had a great taste but I'm not sure how a true coffee snob would feel! Overall, a great spot that has a nice parisian vibe and a great specialty pastry but there's some room for improvement. Not my fav french bakery in the area but I would return.

Alexis D.

Yelp
I came here for the almond croissant which was quite a let down .... I was expecting a burst of rich almond flavor from the inside filling which had none at all. I enjoyed the chocolate almond croissant more. Also, I walked in with a warm smile which was not returned by whichever female pastry chef was there. Not a nice vibe
google avatar

Shahrzad Z.

Yelp
The pastries here are out of this world delicious!! Let's talk about the croissants, oh my goodness! They're like fluffy buttery clouds of perfection! This place is absolutely a hidden gem that stole my heart! The pastries are beyond incredible and the friendly service adds that extra special touch. You gotta go there and try!!

Key M.

Yelp
Love their pastry but not the vibe inside the store when I walk in with a smile it's never returned my a girl at the register Makes me feel like I owe her something...

Yelp
Ok so here goes my review... First of all I want to say that this is a LEGIT french place, everybody who works there seems to speak french and pastries taste like paris. I totally recommend the gruyere turn over (ham & cheese croissant) and the original croissants are to die for!!!! Everything seems to be made in the day so don't be weird out if it's 10 am and they already are out of stock of something, as I said, this is a true french experience. The service is good and quick, employees are good looking, LA needs more places like these and I hope they open a second location or expand the one they currently have cause the quality of the pâte feuilletée never seen in a place in the west side The ambiance is nice, the place is small so I would recommend a weekday to have breakfast cause I can imagine it so crowded and could get uncomfortable but every time I go it's empty or maybe someone doing a take away order.
google avatar

Yelp
I got the chocolate almond croissant and it was pretty good. Nice crispy on the outside and chewy and flavorful on the inside with bits of chocolate inside as well as slices of almond and powdered sugar on top. I rarely get French pastries so I don't know if the price was standard, but seemed a bit pricy: about $6 for one. Definitely will come back again and try the other pastries!

Yelp
I ordered the fraisier classic cake and some of the mini desserts for my tea party birthday, and they turned out amazing! For the mini desserts, I got the raspberry tartlettes, chocolate ganache choux, and pistachio dome. They looked so beautiful! The cake was delicious too.

Yelp
I have to say, gréât viennoiserie at La Chouquette. bread was good as well. Nice little boulangerie on Melrose. perfect for early pickup thank you

Yelp
This used to be my 5 stars place to go until recently when I ordered a birthday cake: Placed a request online and never get an answer, eventually called them to place a 8 people pistachio mousse cake with dark chocolate ganache and croquant bottom more than 72h before I would need it for pick up, I also asked to have a "Happy Birthday" writing on the top. The person I talked to first refused to take my order because it wasn't sufficient time, I pushed back explaining that they are advertising that cake order shall be placed at least 72h before pick-up. Eventually they agreed to take the order but said that they don't do pistachio mousse, again had to pint them to their menu and insist that not only it there but I also already ordered exact same cake 4 times in the past... long story short they said yes to everything but refused to add a writing on top of the cake!! What?!?! What high end pastry place does not provide such final touch?!?! Eventually pickup the cake and once I arrived home I realized that there was no croquant at the base as I asked and used to be, but the pistachio mousse was falling apart and was impossible to serve proper slices. Last but not least, beside the green color it was hard to taste any pistachio. Sad to see that obviously this place went down in terms of quality and customer service, not sure how long this will remain an acceptable situation from the other customers.

Yelp
The best croissants in the US and one of the best in the world. (Better croissants than majority of bakeries in Paris and competes with the best) Keep it up!

Yelp
C'est Parfait...C'est magnifique! This bakery is my favorite place in LA. The owners and staff are great. Enjoy.
google avatar

Yelp
The loveliest little bakery that could be easily overlooked if you don't know what you're missing! All the pastries were exquisite and lovely. They're appropriately priced so, but so worth it. We came in for a look and bought a dark chocolate torte, which had the dreamiest chocolate crust. Thick and tender and heavenly. The torte itself was very thick and heavy, delicious if you like dark chocolate, which we did. The crust was our favorite part. Definitely will stop by again when we're in the area!

Yelp
Theee best fresh flaky croissant in melrose district spot!!! Everyone is authentically "Cé c'wa, le magnifique

Yelp
Stopped by La Chouquette when they opened this morning. This is my go to bakery when I want real French breads and pastries. I typically love their savory pastries made with puff pastry (spinach-goat cheese, ham-cheese, tomato-mozzarella). However, today they had a somewhat limited selection as the Coronavirus situation has forced them to make less. Hence I settled for 2 piping hot amazing croissants which had just come out of the oven at 914 AM. Brought them home and we were immediately transported to France. Also picked up two 5 star pastries. The first was a lemon meringue. The lemon filling was tart bursting with the taste of fresh lemon. It was fantastic. The crust was a French variation of what we're accustomed to in the USA. The crust was more of a classic pate brisee. I assure you that whenever I see them here I will snatch up whatever is in the case. The second pastry was a tart a l'abricot . It was a very classic French apricot tart. The filling was an apricot/fruit puree while atop one found glace apricot pieces. This was fantastic, the type of tart I rarely see in the USA. I will definitely look for this tart again (and again). Elodie and Daniel are the owners. They are incredibly nice and most hospitable. No surprise their bakery is a success. However (and a huge however) business is tough for any independent bakery right now. None have the foot traffic they had pre-Coronavirus. I urge anyone reading this to stop by La Chouquette and pick up some amazing pastries, baguettes, croissants - and the list goes on. I remain a loyal customer and love every product sold here.

Yelp
This isnt so much a review, it's more of a question. Does this place sell Fraisier cake? Has anyone bought it and was it good? Can I buy a single slice for one person or would I have to buy for like 6 people. I ask because the website says they sell it but then on yelp, I don't see it in the menu. Please help, I would like to buy fraisier as I haven't had this in over 2 years.

Yelp
We're ordering quite a bit on Postmates as we shelter at home due to the pandemic. Yesterday, I ordered a selection of pastries and baked goods from La Chouquette. Their Mazou (croissant/Kouign-amann) was the quality and taste I would get a patisserie in NYC. I haven't had anything in Los Angeles come close to how tasty this was. I wish I lived closer to them. Maybe not. I'd have to ration myself from going in every morning for a delicate and scrumptious Mazou. Their Pain Aux Raisin was delicious as well but the Mazou has stolen my heart. I wanted to try their chocolate chip cookies with a hint of flower sea salt so I ordered three. They're good but again the Mazou took the cake. I added three coffee eclairs to my order. I love a good eclair. They were okay. I would have liked to have had the coffee boosted up a bit as it was ever so slight. And the icing on top of the eclair has a gritty, sugary texture. Their packaging is nice. A staff member wrote in their own penmanship a "merci" on the outside of my order. They included my name. I thought it was a nice touch and I appreciated the extra customer service. I'm excited to order some more Mazous in the very near future!

Yelp
Love this place! Items are gone fast so you've gotta get here early in the day to have your picks. We loved the croissants and pain au chocolat here so much that we got them every morning while staying here. The staff was always super nice and seemed really loving her job, she was knowledgeable with all the pastries displayed and made great suggestion based on your taste preference. The salmon and veggies quiche were well baked, crust flaky and buttery, filling fluffy. When you dine in the pastries are arranged in the mini basket for you to enjoy while people watching. Another point for visual artistry. The chefs were speaking french and there were french-speaking customers visiting daily. Never hesitate to visit the Chouquette!

Don F.

Yelp
Great, creative, hand crafted, tantalizing choices of French pastries and coffee. Great bread pudding, chocolate croissant, and Nutella cookie. Plus so much more! Clean place, friendly service and fun. Can't wait to go there again. Went on my way to a late morning screening of "Ferrari" at the DGA. La Chouquette is a place I will often return to!

Yelp
as a french mam i can assert to things, they must be from Paris, the welcome is worth than at the DMV, and the quality is JUST OK

Yelp
You may not think you're into pastries. Probably then you will never read this review. You won't be looking for this place to begin with. It's a shame. People think they're not into pastries, because most of the shit sold in America is made with nasty ingredients and sits out for hours before they buy them. And then it's just to fill a hole in their schedules or a hole in their lives. This place is not that. This is how you make pastries. They import many of their ingredients, because they couldn't find quality local sources. That makes their offerings more expensive than the chewy cardboard you'd find at Starbucks or Whole Foods. But you should definitely try this place, so you know what to look for, for the rest of your life. You need to have a standard against which you compare good food, so you can demand higher quality from the places you end up shopping at. --Or pass up poor quality, because why bother with it? These pastries are so good, I suspect they are healthy. That's my standard: good food is good for you. You make meals of them. They also have great quiche, which seems less like you're treating yourself; but you'll be treating yourself nonetheless. The only criticism I have for this place is that Melrose isn't good enough for them. They need a gorgeous seating area, where I can chill, and eat, and drink coffee, and read or write or chat. Maybe some day LA will make Melrose a pedestrian strip, like 3rd Street in Santa Monica. Then this place will have a worthy venue in which to share its work.

Yelp
Delicious French desserts! I tried this cute little bakery last Sunday and the desserts were delicious! I tried the chocolate and hazelnut tart and the dessert was super delicious and not too sweet. This bakery is located in Beverly Hills and parking seems somewhat limited. The service is great and the sitting area is intimate. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We stopped to get a cake on the way to brunch at a friend house looking for pastries. The bakery didn't have anything left but I instead of tuning us down they prepared a small delicious Napoleon cake on the spot! Great cake! Super service! Highly recommanded

Syvannah M.

Yelp
To say this was delicious is an understatement. Super cute French-style bakery. Smelled amazing like fresh French bread inside. We tried the chocolate and raspberry tartlettes and they were so freaking amazing! The service was great and the owner was very nice.
google avatar

Nancy D.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for cute bakeries and this place didn't disappoint! A little gem on Melrose, upon walking in you feel like you're in a cute bakery in Europe. I got an eclair and I loved it. Flaky and not overwhelmingly sweet! Not to mention how beautiful the presentation was! LOVE!

Yelp
Their galette transported me back to my youth in France. Absolutely delicious. Merci pour les souvenirs! At first glance, the galette itself was huge and festive! And it only got better. The pastry was flakey and buttery, not too sweet. A true Millefeuille. The almond filling was silky and creamy. The person who took my phone order was pleasant and funny. A bientot!

Yelp
If I could give zero stars, I would... the tall lady working the counter was very uninviting and downright snooty. Gives the place a bad vibe.

Yelp
Pissed. I found this bakery MONTHS ago, like early February because I was surprising a friend for her birthday this month. She's from France and this is her favorite cake in the world. She thought it didn't exist in America, but I had them make it custom for her. I asked them SPECIFICALLY to make the cake exactly like the picture. The lady said ok. This is what I asked for, this is what I got. -____- PISSED. I went to the store to pick it up and opened the box and not only did I tell them I wanted it to be 10 inches, but I told them I wanted it to be decorated exactly like the picture. Lol I told the lady the cake isn't 10 inches when she showed it to me (she also didn't seem pleased to show me a preview of the cake I purchased before I left the store, because they taped it up before I got there.) She then proceeds to tell me that they don't go by "inches" they go by how many people need to be served. I'm like oh, that's cute, that's not what your rep said that was anxious to run my credit card and pay for it. GREAT. I wanted the cake to look classy and pretty, not like it was for a little kid. And when you tell a customer that you can make something EXACTLY like the picture they send, you should do just that. Now I'm pissed all over again thinking about it. Smh

Yelp
Today was my second time eating at this establishment. I only come here for the savory pastries as I do not have a sweet tooth. However, that being said, I am sure someday I will sample their sweet offerings and will update my review. I will say that if you are looking for Grade A French pastry, this is the place! This is the real deal folks. I was told by the owner and staff the this place uses real French butter which they import from France. Those of us who know what real French butter is, know that this is a key part of French cooking and baking. I tried the savory goat cheese and spinach puff pastry today for the second time. The dough was perfectly seasoned and flaky and the filling was just fabulous. It takes true skill to do French pastry and it takes mastery to do it right. This place seems to have mastered the technique. The savory pastries cost about $6 and though somewhat pricey, it is well worth it and when I bite into it, I am instantly reminded of Paris and I remember walking along the river seine and eating fabulous French pastry. This place is the real deal folks. Friendly staff, clean shop and quick service.

Yelp
A wonderful relief from the busy-ness of Melrose Avenue... a magical step into France. The shop is small, and there are only a few seats inside. However, the interior decor is clean, modern, and brightly lit, so you can appreciate the colors and variety of their pastries. I haven't seen eclairs like these anywhere else, and they really are works of art. Each has pops of bright colors from fruit garnishes or elegantly piped cream. They are Instagram-worthy, so get your phones ready. Service has always been friendly. It's a pastry shop more than a coffee shop, so their coffee drinks and espressos aren't anything to write home about, but it's definitely worth a visit to see their breathtaking eclairs. Their other pastries are worth a try as well, so might as well a bunch while you're at it. Parking: street/metered These eclairs make beautiful gifts.

Yelp
Very authentic French bakery, with cute Parisian decorations and those beautiful desserts. The lady owner was there when we came and she was nice enough to explain all their available items one by one and answer all of my annoying questions. She also helped me choose which ones to buy. Be careful, all of the pastries on display are very pretty and you will not be able to avert your eyes away from the glass display. Before you know it, you have ordered all of the items. Well, luckily for me, my boyfriend was there to control my eagerness to just buy the whole shop. We finally only got 2 eclairs: lychee/rose/raspberry and chocolate and 12 original chouquettes (they're small so don't make me feel guilty). The prices of the desserts are super expensive, typical French bakeries, I think it was around $5-6 per eclair (and the eclair is so small) I personally thought that eclairs are just pretty, they didn't taste as good as they look because all I could think about was that every bite of the eclairs is worth $2. But, the chouquettes were pretty good, especially if you eat them with hot tea or hot coffee in the morning. I might not be back to this shop because I do not want to eat $2/bite of eclair with a so-so taste

Yelp
La Cho-licious!! Family dinner brought me here. My share for our dinner was dessert and I wanted something new to bring to our table. I came across La Chouquette via a yelp search. Although, a bit pricey (for its size); we were all impressed on how delicious these little things were. We all agreed the the rose tasting one (forgot the name) was the best out the four we tried. The small pastry like (La Chouquette) were delicious as well.

Yelp
A croissant from La Chouquette and jam from La Chamber Aux is the perfect combination to dream of being in Paris during the lock down.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I happened to pass by this place after having brunch on Melrose, and WOW PLEASE DON'T JUST WALK BY!! It's a quaint little bakery that takes pride in the meticulous details that they put in each pastry. All of them are super unique! We got a rose eclair (which smells great and floral and all but honestly it felt like we were just eating a flower) and also a nutella dune. The nutella dune was so good!!! It was like a dream puff but a bit stiffer and the filling with a type of nutella cream. The lady up front (I assume the owner) was very helpful in explaining in detail about all of the individual pastries before we picked any out! There's some seating out front but none inside, and prices are very very reasonable for the quality and effort out behind each one. This place is an authentic French owned with authentic French desserts. Please come try it, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Best croissants in town! Great pastries. Friendly service. We'll be back. ! Highly recommend.
