On the Grid : La Choza

"A riot of colour and atmosphere that extends out into the street. The menu is small, yet considered, with the promise of vibrant South American flavours with each dish. The friendly welcome harmonizes with a playful interior. Day of the Dead and Lucha Libre are recurring themes, providing the backdrop to an intoxicating, vivid experience. This is affordable, informal dining that is guaranteed to be memorable. Photography by Violet Blythe" - Eighth Day

We had to wait half an hour for the food to be ready, but it was worth the wait! The best burrito and nachos we’ve had in a bit and the staff is very nice. Also, the coolers are delicious, so I would definitely recommend stopping by!

Google
We had a lovely early lunch here in rainy Brighton. Sharp and punchy margaritas; warming and spicy hot chocolate. Oozy nachos and smoky corn. Burritos were chunky and flavoursome; crisp coleslaw. The pickles were light and crunchy. The goat quesadillas were hot and hearty. Service was friendly and efficient and the interior is a delight full of colour and warmth. Everything you want in a restaurant.

Google
Best Mexican in the UK! I am an American who has been living in the UK for 5 years and have always struggled to find a Mexican restaurant that is spicy, authentic and delicious until I went here. Great portions, amazing service! They even had a selection of over 6 hot sauces in addition to there offerings on the menu, unlike some places who dont even carry hot sauce..

Google
Food amazing, drinks amazing. Looks small but they have space inside. Fast service and friendly staff. Really pretty and delish food with veggie and vegan options. Loads of different Margarita options, but tommys is the best. Great location in the laines definitely worth going to

I always eat here whenever I’m lucky enough to be in Brighton, and visited over the recent Pride weekend. The service fast and friendly (despite it being so busy), the food completely delicious and the portion size large. Honestly the best Mexican food I’ve had. Five stars all round, looking forward to returning.

Google
Lovely lunch spot, especially on a sunny day — the outdoor vibe was perfect. Great service and super kid-friendly with a proper kids menu. Our daughter loved her quesadilla, my husband said his chicken and chorizo burrito was one of the best he’s had, and my birria quesadillas were delicious. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Visited here on a day trip to Brighton. Really cute place and food tasted very fresh. One of the better Mexican restaurants in the UK. Staff were also really friendly and helpful. Would recommend going to!

Google
The food was amazing! We had the quesadillas with salsa verde and it was so worth it! The service was a bit meh but to be honest, we went in there quite late in a Monday so maybe they were just tired.

Yelp
I came with an open mind, but with my doubts, but I really enjoyed their food. I grew up in California, if that helps to give a frame of reference of what I think about when I crave Mexican food. The service was good, but we came during a time when it was not busy. It's definitely worth giving a try and compared to other places that I've been to in the UK, I would recommend this place.

Yelp
Best tacos! Nice place and service. I tried pulled pork tacos and they were great. I hope to return some day. Thank you!

Chuckie B.

Yelp
I'll start with the good. It's a cute restaurant. Save your money. I ordered the chicharrón with guacamole. I was shocked to get fried pork skins from a bag all for £5.00. The audacity to legit serve that, for that kind of money is insulting. I ate the smashed avocado (their idea of guacamole) out of anger. My partner ordered the spicy chicken wings with jalapeño sauce. He got 4 burnt, unseasoned chicken wings with sour cream. I did enjoy the mezcal margarita! But, not worth almost £10. Just save your money. It's not worth the disappointment.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place 10 stars!!!! The second I walked in through the curved blue door I knew I was going to like La Choza - there was a warm welcome from the staff and the decor was amazing. Full of colour, day of the dead memorabilia, skulls and more kitsch religious statues & paintings than you can shake a bottle of tequila at - I was in heaven! This is all before I even started on the food. We were in a large group so we ordered lots of dishes to share which worked brilliantly. We started with nachos topped with shredded beef, pulled pork, refried beans & guacamole. Next up were tortillas filled with salad, cheesy chillies, prawns, sweet potatoes & more beef. I thought I was going to burst until the churros with caramel dipping sauce were put in front of me, somehow I managed to squeeze two of these delights into my already happy tummy. Drinks wise we had a range of Mexican beers to choose from, tequila, lime margaritas and my favourite of all, the homemade blood orange & chilli margarita! This is a real gem in Brighton & I can see why it is so popular.

Yelp
Hmmm. It's very pretty, beautifully decorated, friendly and I like that people are starting to realise the viability of non tex-mex Mexican cooking in the UK - but man, that was a disappointing burrito. too much rice which had green bits that promised a cilantro tang that wasn't, in fact, there. Barely seasoned refried beans. Good Verde sauce, but nowhere near enough of it and pork, all in one end, that had as much unpalatable rind as meat. The good bits of the pork were almost lovely - you could tell from the smokey aftertaste that there had been love involved somewhere along the line but it had been left uncoaxed by salt or pepper and didn't stand a chance against the stodginess of it's bedfellows. The whole thing was unseasoned and bland - all very well if you eat in and have access to their service area with it's necessary salt and hot sauce, but no good as an in car takeaway - unless you have a full cruet set and a selection of aged pepper sauces in your car, in which case, well done: you rule. I'd go back to try the tacos - usually a menu item with less places to hide and scrimp beneath piles of cheap stodge - and the tortillas and dips looked worth eating - but you can literally get a better burrito in Victoria Station and that can't be right surely?

Yelp
As a Mexican American, I came to this restaurant with low expectations due to it being in England where I know Mexican authenticity is very rare, but I must admit that this place surprised me with how close they tried to appropriate Mexican culture. I ordered a quesadilla with beef and thought it was pretty good (not up to my standards, but good enough). My girlfriend is vegetarian which is why I was surprised to learn that they had vegetarian Mexican dishes that tasted good as well, which is very hard to do in a culture that usually uses some kind of animal product in every dish they make. Everything on the menu had it's original name in Spanish which adds a good feel to it's atmosphere. The only complaint I have is that the horchata was all watered down and not sweet. Horchata is a very popular drink in Mexico and I had never had an horchata disappoint me so much, but luckily I also ordered a michelada which saved my faith in the restaurant. It's very hard to get a michelada right so I was surprised to learn that a Mexican restaurant in England was able to get the drink as good as they did, when other authentic restaurants in Mexico and Los Angeles have a hard time making it right. I'm very impressed.

Yelp
Super colorful shop with a fun menu and quick service! We came on a Monday afternoon right when they opened. The restaurant was a bit nippy but maybe because we were the first guests. My husband and I ordered fried calamari to start, him a burrito and me a burrito bowl. The food came pretty fast. The calamari was good just a bit too salty. We did enjoy our mains though. The bowl and burrito were jam packed with ingredients! I would be surprised if someone left here hungry. The waitress was nice and with a full lunch rush, she was trying her best. This place gets five stars for good menu, fair prices, bright and lively decor, quick service and tasty/high quality food. It's also fairly easy to find and near many other shops!

Yelp
My friends and I decided to go for lunch here whilst in Brighton and I must say, the food was incredible. It was hot enough for us to sit outside and the waiter/waitresses made a point of ensuring we had everything we needed by making regular trips out to us. I have been in May establishments where the outside diners are neglected and so this was a big win for me. Overall a great meal a fantastic service. Would definitely return.

Yelp
This is probably the best Mexican food I've found in England. Coming from southern California, it's hard to find quality and authentic Mexican food. Although I was disappointed to see nachos on the menu and some flavor was lacking (a good burrito needs more pico de Gallo) this will definitely hold me over until I get back home

Yelp
I enjoy this Mexican Taco's in Brighton, we had Taco's and chips and with with Soda's with the best churros and Carmel Sauces. Try this place and see what you think ?

Yelp
La Choza certainly has some of the best Mexican food in Brighton. The portions are generous, the food is well presented and it is very tasty indeed. The decor is also fabulous! If I were to choose a Mexican restaurant within Brighton, I would definitely recommend La Choza. The one tiny downside for me is that they do not take reservations which can sometimes mean a bit of a long wait before you can get seated as the restaurant is not that big. It is worth the wait though once you finally get a seat! I would highly recommend getting a burrito here as they are very scrummy!

Yelp
Amazing Mexican food! The Nachos were to die for! I fully recommend this place to anyone who loves tasty food full of flavor of spice :)

Yelp
Where could I start? They told us it would be a 45 minute wait, and then we had another 20 when we arrived. They sat 3 people at a 2 person table ("two of you there on that bench, that's right") Forgot water until the fourth time we asked. Forgot one of our drinks. Food was pretty much flavourless, which was surprising. Except for the Sopa Azteca which was nice, but completely different from any sopa Azteca I've ever had. Lairy waiter who kept draping his hand around everyone as though we were all on his mate's stag do and then got shirty when we asked him not to touch anyone. Me, I don't get the love for this place. Maybe it was an off day, but I couldn't get out fast enough (oh, and £65 for 3 people to not be particularly full...)

Richard M.

Yelp
Terrible service. One nice waiter but front of house was appalling, really unfair and rude service: have never experienced anything quite like it. Thank god we found another delicious Mexican nearby. Spent the day in Brighton only to be insulted by this outrageously rude waitress, as a returning customer I was shocked, will never be returning. Offended my partner and friends over tasting the salsa's with chips (doubtful they were even homemade)- even said they were 'shovelling it in' - even though it looked like a basket of sad, leftover Doritos - the worst introduction I've had to a restaurant and left before even ordering a drink

Yelp
La choza was recommended to me by three people independent of each other so I knew I had to check it out. I visited back in late October and gutted I haven't had a chance to go back. One thing to note is that they don't take reservations, you have to go in and put your name on the list, and this place gets busy. My partner and I had originally tried to go in on a Tuesday evening, and they told us it was going to be a 45 min wait, we were too hungry for that so opted to go somewhere else. A couple weeks later we went on a Saturday night, factoring in time for the inevitable wait so that we wouldn't be starving while waiting, it was an hour and 15 wait, which was fine as we had planned for that. It's in a great location in the North Laine area, so we just went for a drink elsewhere and they gave us a call when our table was available. We were there near Halloween and all the staff were dressed up, faces painted with sugar skulls and the like which was nice. We ordered drinks, a passion fruit margarita and a hibiscus margarita if I remember correctly, which were lovely. We shared a salad with chorizo crumbled on top on a recommendation from one of my friends who had insisted that I must order it when I went. It was the best thing on the table - this is quite something for me to say as I'm not usually one for ordering a salad. I had a quasedilla, chorizo and chicken, it was lovely but didn't trump the salad. Boyfriend had a burrito which he also enjoyed. We were far too full to eat it all so they packed up our leftovers for us to takeaway and we had those for lunch the next day! Will definitely be going back when I can find the time!

Yelp
La choza has fast become Brighton's hot spot for mexican street food. It's a nightmare trying to get a table (so book ahead) but they do take out which is even better (especially as it's round the corner from my house!). Whatever you order will be tasty and full of flavour and theres a tonne of different variations you can pick from so the choice is yours! My top tip is the prawn tacos..delicious. Its buzzing inside lots of bright colours and the staff are good fun so make sure you head down for a mexican feast asap!
google avatar

Marion S.

Yelp
I have been there several times and the food is really good considering the prices. The burritos and the nacho platter are my favourites.
google avatar

Stephen B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food. They use wonderfully cooked shredded beef which gives a really rich flavour and feels very authentic. Although it could get away with being a bit spicier. The place is colourfully decorated and has a great atmosphere. But it's a total nightmare to get a table though - There isn't booking system and the place is always full at peak times. Order takeaway to avoid disappointment.

Yelp
La Choza actually is something to see. It's full of Mexican skull parerfanalia, candles, loud colours and almost disturbing collections of well.... Mexican stuff. Walking in you really feel quite excited as it offers great atmosphere for a little restaurant and you have that feeling that maybe just maybe you've found a hidden gem... Wrong... To be honest, besides the brilliant decorating that has to be seen... Everything else falls flat. I visited La Choza with one other person and we both found the service to be slow and when we finally received the menu we were disappointed that it read as uninspiring and didn't match the funky feel of the restaurant..... but potentially surprising.... After ordering the only two interesting entrees and being told they had sold out, we opted for some tortilla chips and dips.... Awful... Out of a bottle... Bland... But cheap. Main course we both went for a borritto, my girl friends was filled with prawn and mine was smoked pulled pork. I asked for the salsa on the side. After say.... 30mins...we received our borrittos and tucked in.... One word.... Terrible. Firstly the salsa wasn't on the side, secondly the borritto was barely warm and thirdly.... Tasted like well.... A bunch of mush.... We decided to avoid the last course and not to my surprise I could hear the couple next to me complaining about the very bland churros. So that was a good decision on our part. The very not busy service staff took ages to bring the bill and take payment.... A very drawn out experience... I recommend visit La Choza and have a look at this place, go in the afternoon, eat minimal, have a Mexican beer, enjoy the crazy look of the place and split to somewhere that serves food worth eating.

Yelp
There have been a flurry of burrito joints opening in Brighton in the last six months...La Choza was one of the earlier ones but still relatively new. The decor is fab...I had a strong urge to fill my home with Mexican trinkets, mini shrines and skulls when I was there (I did come to my senses thankfully). I have had mixed dining experiences but mainly positive. My first time was amazing and i had a special which was a prawn dish and came recommended by the waitor. I dreamt about that dish for months after. The staff are good at making recommendations, but a little lost when it comes to actually taking your order and delivering in good time. If you're interested in a relaxed, fun dining experience then it's fine and you just go with it. If you are expecting high class waiting and service, this is not your place. The food in my experience makes it worth the occassional bumps elsewhere. My tip would be go for an early lunch and get there at opening time. This means you are guaranteed a seat, plus they won't have run out of the specials. If you go in the evening you risk the seat waiting game. They don't take bookings, but if you go in they take your number and will call you when a seat becomes available. Once it was only 15 minutes...another is was 1 hour 30 minutes...by which time we'd gone elsewhere. This is still a place I want to come so I'll be back again and again I'm sure...

Yelp
I was a tourist on a lovely summer day in Brighton, wandering the Laines looking to stop for something to eat. The delicious smell from this restaurant and the lively decor caught my eye so I decided to check it out. I come from a neighborhood in New York with a lot of authentic Mexican and Colombian street food and while this wasn't exactly that, it was very tasty nonetheless. I got three chicken tacos with a habanero salsa that was the perfect amount of spicy. I was a little more than "three tacos"-hungry but I knew what I was getting into with the portion size. Would really like to try the sweet potato and feta if I ever get back down to Brighton on my next London adventure. Affordability, friendly staff, and beautiful decor with optional outside dining make this place a win!

Jennifer B.

Yelp
me and my partner visited this restaurant for lunch before checking into out hotel for my birthday. We had an HOUR AND A HALF WAIT for some topped nachos and the burrito bowl. During our wait we weren't checked on by any of the staff and no apologies were given for why the food was taking so long. We sat and saw at least 4 different groups who came in 20/ 30 mins after us get served before we both did. this time cannot even be justified as the meals we ordered where simple and shouldn't have taken more than 30 mins. I would've been a lot happier if the food we got was delicious but the only barely hot thing on my plate was the cheese. I was given bland and cold pulled pork. They're lucky my partner keeps me grounded otherwise i would've walked out and taken their cactus plant with me!!!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
If I could give half stars this would be an absolute 3 and a half. I think I'm being very kind giving it 4. Had a tasty meal with friends here. Got nachos which were good, and a chicken and chorizo quesadilla which was very yum. I'll be back again for sure and the next time I will definitely be getting a bowl, they look amazing. Busy spot, had to sit outside as there was a 45 minute wait for an inside table. The food took a while to come which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Quite pricey for A lunch though and for what you get, Dublin has millions of burrito places and none of them are this expensive. I will be back For round two.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
The chicken and chorizo burrito had to be sent back twice as it was cold. The chicken had been precooked and so it was a bit dangerous to be only warmed rather than cooked all the way through. When I did get a hot burrito I found that the flavours had been muddled together and I was eating a bland mushy mix of food. There was no chorizo inside that I could taste or find. We had a better desert with Nutella stuffed Mexican doughnuts. The doughnuts were dry and overcooked but the orange ice cream that went with it was great. The star here is for the staff who were really lovely and apologetic. They also gave us 20% off the bill as we sent back the burrito twice. I'm not feeling very well this morning too. Maybe this was a bit of an off day, as other reviews are quite good. I was looking forward to eating here so feel a bit disappointed with the experience. Don't think I will go back.
google avatar

Charlotte L.

Yelp
Anywhere with sugar skulls and mexican wrestling masks on the wall is always going to be a winner with me but this place also has the food and service to back up my love for this place. The food is brilliant (especially the chicken burrito) and affordable. You can easily have a meal and a drink here for under a tenner. With this in mind, it is understandable that sometimes you might have to wait a while for a table. But even that process is painless as the hostess will take you number and call you when a table is available leaving you to leisurely wonder around The Lanes safe in the knowledge you haven't lost you place in the queue. I would strongly recommend visiting during the Day of the Dead celebrations to get your facepainted as a sugar skull. You can never be too old for bright colours and face paint.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with this Mexican bunting I really want to steal but won't. Also the staff are super friendly and the food is incredible and it's really quick service! Get there early though, it fills up at lunch ridiculously quickly.

Sophie P.

Yelp
I'm going to go back here when I'm less hungover and do another review. Another Pride purchase, I went here with a couple of friends for some sustenance to get us through the Sunday evening. My friend ordered the calamari to start (I don't usually eat it, not being a fan of seafood) - all I can say is WOW! I could have just eaten that for starter and main! I ordered the Chicken and Chorizo Burrito with a medium spicy salsa. After hearing all the good reviews from friends, I was so excited to eat it, but so gutted that I just wasn't that blown away. To be honest it tasted pretty bland and generic, and for a medium hot salsa it tasted very mild indeed. I was disappointed. The staff were friendly, although the table next to us were kicking off about having to wait over an hour for their starters (ours came out before theirs!) so that made the atmosphere a bit awkward. I'd still go there again just to give it another try...everyone has off days right?

Eleanor V.

Yelp
la choza is a great burrito spot. considering how many times i've got food from here i haven't tried much off the menu, but their black bean and roast veg (vegan) burrito is sooo good. the staff have always been very friendly when i've been in (you can eat in, take away, or order from various delivery apps), and the atmosphere is great. from what i know it's an independent business local to brighton which i always prefer over bigger chains, i was gutted when their second location closed ! as long as i'm living in brighton i will continue to come here and HIGHLY recommend it.
google avatar

Roger M.

Yelp
Had a terrible time at this Mexican street food restaurant. It took the kitchen 25 minutes, on a Sunday lunchtime in October, to bring up a corn flour tortilla filed with some chopped onion and red cabbage, and some smoked pulled pork. Assuming that all the ingredients are pre prepped, this should have taken as long to bring up as writing this review. They got our order wrong, served up a disgusting chemical tasting concoction as fresh lime juice, and offered us a 20% discount for our trouble. Portions can be surprisingly variable. Go for a burrito, get a massive meal, the tortillas are tiny and cost just as much. Not recommended. Could be good if the chef woke up, and the wait staff listened to customers.

Janie B.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service, cosy atmosphere and in fantastic location. One of my top recommendations for locals and visitors to Brighton. Thanks to Yelp and everyone for a great night last week.

Al K.

Yelp
A tricky one. I've had three good visits here but my last one was disappointing. Having looooooved the fish tacos here I had to order them on my latest visit. The soft taco shells had been changed and disintegrated so you could not pick them up to eat. The order came incomplete and the whole dish was like it had come from a completely different restaurant from previous visits. Bland and quite uninteresting. Very disappointed- I thought this was going to be one of my faves.
google avatar

Krupa K.

Yelp
The decor in here is great! So much going on, loads of colours and quirky little things everywhere. The staff were really good and the food was good too- not amazing, but good basic mexican. It's hard to get a table and gets busy as it;s so popular so I would book ahead for sure- definitely worth a visit or two.
google avatar

Kilgore T.

Yelp
What can I say. Three times I went to try this place, three times the staff was rude. So rude. I've worked in the service industry plenty and it just isn't hard to be friendly, even when it's really busy.
google avatar

Andreas J.

Yelp
Great flavours to great prices. Probably one of the places with best value-for-money in Brighton. The nacho platters are lovely...

Celina H.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food, very friendly staff, good atmosphere and colorfully decorated. Perfect for lunch or a casual dinner as meals are served in baskets
google avatar

Juliana R.

Yelp
A cosy Mexican restaurant to go when in Brighton. I think it is definitely the best Mexican option there. Hare and Hounds in London Road also serves food from la Choza. Vegetarian options available.
google avatar

Ben J.

Yelp
Colourful place to sit and enjoy some Mexican food, especially Taco Tuesdays. The staff are very friendly but if you are looking for a genuine Mexican food fix then it will leave you disappointed.
google avatar

Eleanor C.

Yelp
I am only able to comment on the takeaway food at La Choza as we did not sit in the restaurant. I had the fish habenaro burrito and as an American who knows her texmex, I can safely say the burrito was divine! I was not expecting anything too much from La Choza but boy was I wrong. The fish tasted fresh and it was packed to the max with Mexican delights like refried beans and sour cream. To accompany the burritos we had chips, guac as well as nachos-- greedy, I know! The nachos were loaded and I love that they carefully made sure there was cheese on all the different layers. They were generous with the toppings on the nachos and that made me happy. The chips were slightly seasoned and really complimented the gauc. I thought their chipotle sour cream was also a great side addition to all of the orders. As far as texmax food La Choza is a solid contender in the market and I would be happy to eat from there again.

Jimbo C.

Yelp
nestled within the north lanes of Brighton is the best Mexican joint this side of the Atlantic. you can't go wrong with a pulled pork burrito with smoky chipotle sauce. the tortilla is grilled, the beans and rice spiced, with the softest pork that slowly melts in your mouth.

Peter K.

Yelp
Great little place, slightly off the beaten track. Great food, nice staff. The margaritas are delicious and definitely worth ordering. The sauces are quite hot so if you're sensitive to heat have a think about that one! The only bad thing about this place is that it's not open enough!! So worth calling ahead and seeing if they are. Perhaps if the customer numbers pick up they will open more often so get down there!! Highly recommend.
