On the Grid : La Colombe

"La Colombe is doing everything right. Their high-quality beans are paired with high-quality milk from Kilgus Farms which makes for a very delicious cappuccino. My favorite in the city (heck, country!) Equally impressive is their Draft Latte, which, you guessed it, comes out of the tap. It is best up with no ice as it has this glorious foam a top a nutty, slightly sweet latte." - Linsey Rosen

La Colombe Fires West Loop Baristas as Unionized Workers Cry Foul | Eater Chicago

"Five baristas were fired from the West Loop cafe at 955 W. Randolph Street days before the Thanksgiving holiday, wiping out nearly half the staff; workers say the terminations came just after four out of five Chicago locations ratified their union contracts with United Food and Commercial Workers Local No. 881 on Tuesday, October 22, and allege the firings were retaliatory and intended to intimidate. "Given the proximity to the ratification of the contract, this feels retaliatory, it feels intimidating and it starts the relationship between this brand new bargaining until, this brand new union within this company on a really antagonistic foot," says a barista involved in the union campaign, who adds, "And of course, there’s concern that this kind of disciplinary approach could be repeated at other cafes who also voted to unionize and who had the contracts, namely the Andersonville, Armitage, and Gold Coast locations." Workers say that a week before the firings a Chicago-area manager and a human-resources representative from the chain's headquarters pulled baristas one by one into impromptu meetings in the basement; the meetings were described as "policy reviews," but employees say they turned disciplinary. Unionized workers are covered by federal Weingarten rights which allow union reps to attend meetings disciplinary in nature to offer support for employees. Violators could face unfair labor practice charges. During the meetings, staff were shown videos of them working — in the footage, baristas were giving away free drip coffee to regular patrons, other service-industry workers, and unhoused individuals — and company representatives questioned the baristas and took detailed notes; one worker says that when they were fired the following week the company cited the footage as the reason. "They were essentially interrogation sessions," a barista says. "We were misled to believe they were not disciplinary, in retrospect they were, there was no talking or discussing of the disciplinary process. They showed us camera footage of us giving away free drinks and dismissed us without info or context." Another barista says, "The representative incorrectly dictated back what I was saying." Several of the fired employees asked to remain anonymous for fear of further retaliation; one said they never received any disciplinary actions or write-ups in the three years they worked at the location, and a veteran employee noted that under the site's previous culture it was occasionally acceptable to give away free drinks as a way to "build a bond with our regulars so that they would keep coming back and we’d have a good customer service relationship," adding, "It’s very difficult to refuse homeless people or homeless children. And also sometimes it’s a de-escalation tactic because we’ve had very aggressive homeless people in the past." Workers also point to a culture shift after the chain’s acquisition by a Greek yogurt company in December 2023 and note that the acquiring company has a history of labor strife with dairy farm workers. A company spokesperson did not answer questions about the meetings or terminations but wrote in an email, "We cannot comment on confidential employee matters, however, we can say that we take our [company’s] values and policies including our Standards of Conduct seriously, and enforce them equally, holding all employees across all aspects of the company to the same established standards. All employee matters are investigated thoroughly prior to any action being taken." One fired barista says, "I think they specifically targeted our cafe because the people at our location were some of the more militant and more senior people. Our cafe was seen as a problem more so than the others." - Leigh Giangreco

The quality of their espresso has gotten worse over time. Try Drip Collective instead or stick to their mixed drinks. I loved coming here for espresso and their ceramics set them apart back in the day, but it’s just not what it use to be.

Google
Maybe I'm uneducated in the coffee field, but the selection they have is incredible. Their specials are what really sets this place apart in my eyes. The double shot marshmellow coffee and their pumpkin latte is to die for. Croissants are also delicious and are close enough to being authentically french for Chicago. Diego is an absolute treasure and will go out of their way to give you recommendations and explanations on all the different items on their menu.

The oak mill draft latte is such a great drink. One of my all time favorites. This is also my favorite brand of coffee. The take home cold brew gallon Is also nice and strong.

The coffee here is OK for me. I am a big Blue Bottle fan, and the only thing I drink from Starbucks is the flat white, the flat white here is comparable but no size selections, basically a tall and not served very hot. The mocha tasted like water down hot chocolate, couldn't really taste the coffee last part whatsoever. Good service, there is free sparkling or flat water self serve.

I am not a coffee connoisseur so please don't rely on my coffee rating. I ordered a draft latte (my first time), it was good but I find most American coffee watery. But the barista was super sweet, she guided us through what to order, customised the coffee and also added some half and half when I wanted my coffee to be thicker! Thank you for your customer service!

Been to many coffee spots and always try to get something different. I had the draft latte with oat milk. Tastes great! Very creamy and smooth not overly sweet. Excellent service and if in the area again will try something else

Google
The draft latte was such a unique coffee! The texture of it was so frothy and just a cool change up.

Google
Been looking for a Columbia-style coffee spot since I left Salt Lake City and I finally found it. Dope setup here everyone was super friendly and had all my favorites plus the pastries. Got the Macchiato and it was excellent 9.2. Will be back they had my almond croissant I'm definitely need to hit up the next trip...overall 9.4.

Yelp
I got their autumn draft with vanilla syrup added and it was so good. It was not too sweet but really smooth. I really enjoyed how the staff there was so nice especially at 6:30AM in the morning. There was a little sample as well and I can say it was pretty good. The ambiance inside was great for a study place and it's in West Loop which is great. After a long day at a coffee shop you can walk around West Loop for dinner or catching up with a friend.

Yelp
Visited this location on a late weekend afternoon expecting not many people wanting caffeine that late in the day but there was a nonstop line of guests for the half hour that I sat in the cafe. It's a pretty big space inside with plenty of seating. I think it's a great coffee shop to meet up with a friend. They do sell a small selection of baked goods in addition to their coffee. I went with their seasonal item: the pumpkin spice draft latte. I loved it! Subtle pumpkin spice flavor, not overly sugary and the entire drink tasted so smooth. It was very enjoyable and I would order it again during the fall season.

Yelp
I got my order quickly on Saturday morning. Tried Matcha Strawberry - seasonal menu I guess.

Yelp
I am so sad to be writing a two star review for La Colombe after being a big fan of their products in store. I love that this coffee brand has been a local favorite that can mass produced for stores. This in a way felt to hurt them when visiting their West Loop cafe location. Upon arriving, the spot was packed! We barely got in the door to wait to order. The menu is straight forward with coffee and tea types. I first noticed that at least five of their drinks are on draft. This didn't sit well with me. When going up to order, I asked if they had any flavors: chocolate and vanilla. I'm shocked that a coffee shop wouldn't offer more than what they have in retail to draw customers in. Either way, I ordered a chocolate latte and my fiancé a chai latte. Our order was ready in minutes and they have items on the counter to self add to your drink: cane sugar syrup, cinnamon, etc. It was my fault I let my drink cool down with walking back to the car as there was no chocolate flavor added and VERY bitter. While I loved that the coffee was strong, I now know why I saw people dumping the sugar syrup into their drinks. The Chai Latte was also watered down tasting. Overall, I'm so disappointed in my visit. I wish their coffee shop displayed more expansive menu items to show a difference of what they can make of their products. However if you like a strong, straightforward coffee, this is the spot for you!

Yelp
A HUGE fan of their oat milk draft lattes. They're so creamy and frothy and don't require a lot of sweetness to enjoy (you can always add more) I loved the pumpkin spice one and just tried their seasonal oat nog! Perfect holiday drinks
google avatar

Shriya S.

Yelp
This experience really helped me appreciate La Colombe coffee! I usually buy their bottled cold brews at the store, but have not been as much of a fan of their canned options. The oat milk draft latte seemed to be a favorite - it was super creamy, not sweet and a definite treat! There seems to be a lot of variation but this location was great and the ambiance was really nice, just pretty busy when we went.
google avatar

Alyssa E.

Yelp
Went late morning and it was very calm and cozy once entering, with people chatting with their morning coffee. It was my first time and I did not know what to order but the seasonal oatchata latte draft caught my eye. It was very delicious and on the sweeter side. My partner had the cold brew and described it as a lighter kind of brew. Service was good and fast w/ it only being 2 workers. I would go back to try other drinks.
google avatar

Kate W.

Yelp
La Colombe, I will dream of your draft oatmilk latte forever and ever. It is literally one of my favorite drinks ever. I don't stop in here often, but I do try to make a point to come by when I'm in the area. I think the pricing is a little high, so I save it for special occasions. The coffee options are great and the staff are mostly friendly. It gets really busy and crowded here, so it's not a place that I recommend for hanging around or studying/working in. I prefer to get in, grab my coffee, and then browse around the other shops on Randolph.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
La Colombe takes coffee seriously without the hipster attitude. Food / Drink - 4 Décor - 4 Service - 4
google avatar

Yelp
Good morning, West Loop! Welcome to one of the friendliest chains in Chicago! The staff is not only friendly to their customers, but to each other. It really amps up the environment to see the baristas interacting with each other- you can tell they really value teamwork and community here. I have to admit, I am NOT a coffee drinker. When I visit this cafe, it is as a plus one to my cortado-loving partner. A hard drink to find, and an even harder one to serve well- Colombe does a good job. I enjoy trying the treats here! The Canelé is a new favorite (picture included). Cheers, La Colombe!
google avatar

Yelp
Cereal-ously having an oat draft latte with cereal milk Tried out @lacolombecoffee newest lined addition to their menu using cereal milk as part of their oat latte and honestly it was delicious! It wasn't as sweet as @cassidyeatscarbs and I thought it would be, we would say it was very refreshing as a coffee! It didn't need any additions it was perfect as it was and we're going to be sad when it goes away from their menu! The service was awesome everyone was so helpful since it was our first time going into the cafe and the ambiance was very peaceful I have to say! If you're around one just stop by and try it!
google avatar

Vincent S.

Yelp
Talk about a nice coffee shop in Chicago! I've always loved this brand and I can say I still do! The flavor of the espresso was so smooth. The pastries were fresh and tasty. The customer service and selection went hand in hand. They are knowledgeable of their products and the pastry case caught my eye while ordering. I'm definitely coming back!!!
google avatar

Charleene R.

Yelp
Don't be afraid of the line!! Walked in and got in the long line to the door. I thought it would take a while but it actually moved fairly quick! Ordered a latte and it was actually good! The coffee didn't seem bitter and went down smooth! I also ordered a gingerbread pastry that was good, but it would have been better warmed up. The area where you pick up your coffee order is a counter where you can stand and enjoy your coffee if you'd like, or you can grab it and have a seat to enjoy it. Either way there was a good amount of seating inside to not feel so crowded. I will definitely be back for the coffee.
google avatar

Erika O.

Yelp
This was my first time trying La Colombe and it was so good! I got the cereal milk oat draft latte and it was so creamy. The perfect amount of sweetness. Drinks came out quick and service was great! A cute coffee shop with decent amount of seating. Wish I had one where I lived!
google avatar

Talena H.

Yelp
This is the only coffee shop i go to where the line is long and the service is actually quick! Love their lattes I always forgot about going to this location. Since i was in the area I went in got my latte it was kinda crowded but it was a holiday so most people was out and about. Wish it was more locations around the city
google avatar

Isra A.

Yelp
Got a basic latte from here, although they are well known for their oat milk draft lattes which are really good too. The service is nice and efficient and there are a decent amount of seating options. The big con is a lack of wifi and outlets making it not a good option for working from. I'd consider it more of a spot to take ur coffee to go or take a break from shopping in the area.
google avatar

Zeina E.

Yelp
How have I just discovered this place? I was looking for some coffee after a nail appointment down the block, and recognized the brand from the La Colombe canned coffee they sell at the grocery store. This place only serves coffee and tea drinks, along with some variety of baked goods. If you're looking for breakfast/lunch sandwiches, this isn't the place for you. Decor is minimal, but a great ambiance to work from "home" or study. Service was great! The baristas are sweet, kind and helpful. I was in between choices and the barista was more than happy to recommend her favorite drink. I went with the cappuccino. Even though it was a to-go cup, it still came out with the adorable coffee art. If you're not into coffee and tea, they have a few more options (chai, matcha etc..) for you to choose from. This is one of a few other locations around the city, but a great stop while exploring or hanging around the West Loop. ~Till next time!

Yelp
Great coffee and people. But their hours have just dramatically changed. Inexplicably Closing super early. See attached
google avatar

Leslie S.

Yelp
I have been waiting years to try La Columbe Coffee at their actual cafe. I have been drinking their canned draft lattes for years and have been a huge fan of these canned draft lattes. I finally made it to this La Columbe Coffee cafe while visiting Chicago. I ordered their famous draft latte. I had their original version with whole milk. It was creamy and sweet. I enjoyed it, but I would have enjoyed it if it was less sweet and more coffee. They have a less sweet version called the half tan, which is half draft latte and half cold brew. The employees working were very nice and seemed happy to be at work!
google avatar

Annie K.

Yelp
When we arrived, there was a line out the door, but impressively it moved pretty fast! Got a cappuccino, flat white, and 2 pastries - one was a chocolate/cinnamon pastry and one was a cheese and tomato savory pastry. I liked that they give you the option to drink your coffee "to stay", from real ceramic and glass drinkware, and the bar tables were cool for standing and drinking your coffee, quasi-Italian style. The coffee was good and service was fine but the pastries were terrible! The sign on the pastry case said that they're made fresh daily and come from The Publican but it seemed like they'd been sitting in the fridge for about 3 days. Not flaky and the layers of pastry were so hard and stuck together that I could barely take a bite with my front teeth; I had to tear it apart with my hands! Based on my enjoyment of La Colombe coffee which I brew at home, I had high expectations. Sadly this is not a good look for La Colombe. They'd be better off not offering any pastries whatsoever because now I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth (literally and figuratively). I should've known better when I noticed that most of the people there had brought in donuts from the Voodoo Donut nextdoor instead of having La Colombe's pastries lol.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Very small shop not enough room for many people to work. Only reviewing because I was not a fan of the coffee. I'm from Seattle so I prefer like a heavier body coffee definitely not a French roast but something that actually tastes like coffee. This tastes like water so you may be into that and you may not.. I don't have anything else to say.
google avatar

Simran S.

Yelp
This definitely would be my go to coffee place in Chicago. Anytime I visit a new city I love to try the different coffee shops the place has to offer. From its bold taste to its strong and flavorful aroma, this coffee truly stood out from the rest. What sets this coffee apart from the rest is its unique and distinct flavor. It possesses a depth that is hard to find elsewhere, making it a standout among the vast array of coffee options in Chicago. Whether you're a coffee connoisseur or simply someone who appreciates a good cup of coffee, I highly recommend giving this coffee a try. It's worth the wait!
google avatar

Blue A.

Yelp
This has become by Friday treat! Oat Draft Latte, add vanilla, and an extra shot of espresso if you're in need of that extra boost. The large oat lattes come with the equivalent of two shots of espresso. It's smooth, and creamy. Adding vanilla makes it perfect, a nice dose of sweetness that just takes it to another level. The staff is always friendly. Even if the line is out the door, it moves fast. Worth the wait.
google avatar

Jannet L.

Yelp
Walked in here after lunch at avec to grab some coffee. Loved their branded cups and saucers although not the largest volume, fun to sit and sip and chat with a friend. The seating indoors up front is a little tight so gotta squeeze between people and a little concerned about spilling our coffee on them should anyone make any sudden movement as you're passing them. It was a good blend of oat milk and espresso - it was cold for me (60s is too cold for iced coffee) so I couldn't try their draft. What I really liked were the large paper cups and sparkling water on tap in the back. What a nice special touch! Clean bathrooms especially for a coffee shop!
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
La Colombe is one of my favorite places to get coffee after my workout in the city. The coffee is always smooth and rich in flavor. I have had their vanilla latte served both hot and cold, always with oat milk and I must say, they have one of the best in the city. The latte comes with two shots of espresso, and the vanilla flavor is never artificial tasting. It has just the right amount of sweetness and richness. On my last visit, I ordered the gingerbread latte made with oat milk. This seasonal drink topped any seasonal drink chain coffee shops offer. The gingerbread flavor reminded me of an old fashion gingerbread cookie, rich in spices and molasses but not overpowering. The space has a decent amount of seating, and the vibes are very welcoming. The staff is very friendly and helpful, always ready to recommend something delicious.

Melany M.

Yelp
3/5 - I ordered a matcha latte, hot. I got it luke warm and in a to go cup... I wasn't asked if it was to stay. I then asked for it in a mug and for it to be warmer than it was served to which the barista agreed to but the other two were intently and obviously watching making me feel uncomfortable for even asking my matcha latte to be remade so that it was actually hot! The remade matcha latte was very good but I did not appreciate feeling like I was a nuisance for asking something that I paid for to be made correctly. Then I got a comment from one of the baristas saying that hopefully "my drink was hot enough for me" ?? I thought the comment was unnecessary or just worded wrong if it came from good intentions and I just did not appreciate the customer service here. Truly an example of customer service making or breaking a business. Could've been higher in ratings without the customer service experience I had!
google avatar

Shervani P.

Yelp
Love my neighborhood La Colombe! They always have the best coffee and lattes and service is pretty quick. The almond croissant is delicious and their season Strawberry Oatmilk Draft Latte is so good! Definitely recommend!

Joshua Y.

Yelp
Unfortunately had probably one of the worst experiences with a barista I've had in my life here. I ordered an espresso during peak hours when there were a lot of folks in the place, so many conversations and overall noise. Apparently my order was called out in a timely fashion, but after only one attempt to call it out again the barista then abruptly yells that she is giving it up to whoever wants it, much to the surprise of everyone in the shop. I thought that they must've messed up the order as I assumed there was no way they would just be giving away the drink I paid for, but after waiting for around 10 more minutes I realized that people who ordered after me were getting their drinks at this point. Even when going up to inquire about my drink, I was instantly met with a rude attitude, assuming my intent and saying something along the lines of "Stop pestering me our wifi is not public and bathrooms are not accessible" (can't remember the exact words bc I was so thrown off). Just overall a crazy experience for a paying, polite customer when we're all out here freezing in the dead of winter: was so mind blowing had to share on Yelp.
google avatar

KELLY M.

Yelp
Came here last Wednesday with my sister to grab an afternoon coffee, let me tell you the strawberry oatmilk latte is so delicious. The strawberry flavor does not taste artificial plus the oatmilk makes it so smooth. Correct amount of sweetness. I would definitely order that again. Employee are friendly and there is indoor seating for you to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. There is also pastry to order and grab to go coffee in a can. Would recommend and come back here!
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Yikes. No WiFi. Didn't know until after I ordered and was about to have a business meeting. Not helpful. What does La Colombe think people use cafes for? ( Barista Heidi was very kind and offered a refund if I needed to leave and go elsewhere. I feel bad: I bet she has to apologize for this all the time. Design and vibe here is warm wood and bright. Service was very friendly.
google avatar

Eli T.

Yelp
This the second location I have been to and it delivered once again. The draft latte is probably my favorite iced coffee drink out there, I love the canned drinks but straight from the tap is 10x better. I added a lil Demerara simple syrup to sweeten mine just a tad more. Staff was friendly and quick, there's also always free water which is great! Very cool vibe quiet enough you can have a conversation but not too quiet.

Abigail H.

Yelp
Coffee was good, but made me physically sick. Never had that happen so not sure what's up with that. Place was cute though and the workers were nice. Unfortunate.
google avatar

Shwe N.

Yelp
Very aesthetic and efficient café to try, to loiter at, to work at. Good location and affordable for drinks that can be adjusted to your liking!
google avatar

Deanna H.

Yelp
Visited on 2/17. Long line just right out the door and we were out in less than 15 minutes! I ordered the oat milk draft latte with vanilla (add vanilla). Loved the location, cleanliness and most importantly the coffeeeeeee! If you're big on strong strong coffee, add an extra shot on top!
google avatar

Alaina S.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in Chicago I make it a point to come here at least once if I can. Love the oat milk draft latte. So smooth and creamy with barely a hint of sweetness from the oatmilk. They have sweetener on the counter so you can sweeten it if you like but I think it's perfect as is. I get my husband the chai latte and he really likes the spiciness of the chai. Every time I come it has been consistently good so I know this will continue to be a regular stop for me
google avatar

Eunice C.

Yelp
Friendly workers + delicious pumpkin spice oatmilk draft latte! Drinks came out quickly and the line moved fast too.
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
Great espresso. Noise isn't too bad, you could do work here. We took home some espresso glasses they had for sale as well.
google avatar

Teanna T.

Yelp
I have always enjoyed coming to La Colombe in the West Loop. Fast , knowledgeable and efficient. My go-to drink: Draft Oat Milk Ice Latte Decaf Mocha Oat Milk Latte
google avatar

Kimmie R.

Yelp
Awesome! Wide variety of pastries, coffees and teas. Go ahead and order in and enjoy it in a ceramic mug, I sure did. It is a good place to chat with friends and people watch. The cookies are good and taste homemade. The place is relatively clean and the noise is at a volume that gives you privacy even if it's an open room. Street parking is available but considering walking a block down because there's no parking in front of the cafe. I love there there is no extra fee for oat milk. It's on the counter and you can add it as you see fit. The chairs are uncomfortable. Baby butt pain here we go! This is the best way to ensure patrons don't overstay their welcome because there's no way you could ever sit on that little stool for too long.
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
Correcting the rating for my previous review from years ago since La Colombe is honestly SO good. This location oddly still doesn't have wifi.... BUT get the Oat Draft Latte or the Oat Black and Tan. The oat drinks here on tap are so good and creamy. There are a good number of seats in this West Loop La Colombe and there's free water (both still and sparkling). If this location had wifi like some of the other locations do, it would instantly be a 5 stars for me.
google avatar

Sam N.

Yelp
Coffee-so many choices and we still have the same time we had yesterday maybe 2 more minutes if you know where your sox are. But seriously coffee is coffee. I have long been a fan of the La Colombe brand since it is quite strong.
google avatar

Maria F.

Yelp
This is a cozy place. The staff is friendly. Happy they had hot chocolate on the menu. It was served in a pretty cup and saucer. My husband ordered a regular coffee. He enjoyed it. I didn't try it.They offered free sparkling or still water on tap. The menu is next to the register.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
I have e visited here multiple times these past few months because my bank is located just yards away so it's always fun to make a pit stop here to unwind, gather my thoughts and soak up great vibes. This particular La Colombe is my favorite though not only because of the cheerful layout, bright open space and comfy beaches but the staff here are outstanding! They love being here--- it's obvious and I'm extremely sensitive to energies so I feel like my energies are being amplified here---not drained. Here's a huge thank you to all these wonderful barristas who make it fun--Veronica, Maxwell, Sam, Elle, Juno, Sarah, Kyle, Leah, Shannon, Danny, Daniel, Natalie, Theresa, Giulz and Sophia. On a side note Juno remembered me when I once visited their Lincoln Park location on Armitage! Can't believe it! That speaks volumes and I appreciate when people remember me. I'm not a coffee drinker so when I come here to relax I always get hot cocoa and a tomato savory Danish which hits the spot for me.

Yelp
First time here and the coffee is amazing. The "Oat Latte" is on tap with nitrous, so it come out with a foam on top and is absolutely delicious!!! We also had a Chai Tea Latte, very yummy!
google avatar

Joyee T.

Yelp
Great safe place to get a good cup of coffee/latte. The workers here are always so nice and make you feel welcome!! Their coffee on tap is always my favorite and the oatmeal draft latte is so yummy especially if you are a milk coffee type of person. It is fluffy without being overpowering. There is seating inside to be able to study or talk with friends but can be a little bit noisy. Otherwise great place to stop!

Yelp
Good coffee spot for a pitstop. Good amount of seating. Bathrooms. Coffee as good as you'd expect from a La Colombe.
