14 Top Montreal Bakeries for Italian Zeppole - Eater Montreal

"Though perhaps best known for its wide selection of cronuts, cannoli, and bomboloni, come spring La Cornetteria is a necessary stop on any zeppole pilgrimage. Crisp, heavy with ricotta, and yet still airy — it’s a tricky equilibrium to master, yet La Cornetteria has done it again." - Valerie Silva

Red velvet cake : perfection. The cannoli (pistachio) are 6/5 stars. Make sure you eat whatever Cinzia recommends! lovely service, too

A couple of weeks ago my son and I were walking by and he actually stopped me to say, 'what is that scent? It smells so good!'. The aromas wafting from this little gem of a pastry shop compelled us to go in, even though we were supposed to be on our way elsewhere. So worth it! Those cronuts were unlike any other I had! Fresh, delicious, perfect texture and balance of sweetness. The latte was perfect too. I'm still thinking about that pistachio cronut, can't wait to go back! Also, the vibe is very authentic Italian and feels cozy. And the owner is so kind and welcoming, which is always appreciated. I really enjoy this kind of atmosphere than the big chain places. Thank you team, see you soon :)

Google
Some of the best cannoli, cronuts and bomboloni. Everything was fresh and delicious. The texture of the ricotta filling was perfect, not too dense and heavy, not too light, and not too sweet. Just perfect. I hope they never close down. I'm very picky with my Italian desserts and pastries, especially having visited Italy and growing up with a lot of Italians. In my opinion, hands down, the best Italian pastry shop in Montreal.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, this is a great place to unwind with a perfect Cornetti and Cappuccino. All the products here and made on site. The best ricotta cream filling in my opinion! Great Zepoles and Cronuts too. If you like Bombolone they are always fresh and tasty.

Google
Amazing Italian desserts with a touch of french fusion. The Macchiato was strong and amazing! Their in-store made donut/croissant is amazing. The price is a bit steep but it was worth it for sure. I would come back to try their other inventions. The service is amazing, she went above and beyond to describe each of their pastries.

Exceptional service! The girl that served us was so sweet & patient. We bought some fresh Zeppole & coffee. They were awesome! Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
STOGLIATELLE Best in Montreal. Fresh, fresh fresh and don`t forget to get an espresso or latté .. What a great place, stepped in as I was in the area and had to get coffees for my team. Thank you !!

Yelp
Came here to check out their cronuts since in NYC we are used to the ones made by the famous bakery that had made them popular. Unlike the NYC bakery, they have a few flavors as oppose to the flavor of the moment. We decided to get the chocolate and pistachio flavors. The cronuts have a basic croissant-donut base with a flavored creme filled in the hole in the center. The chocolate one was like a chocolate icing. The pistachio was a light flavored whipped creme with a sprinkle of the chopped nuts. The cronut itself has a light flavor and is airy in texture like a croissant. We also tried their cannoli. The cannoli is no way like the classic ones that we know. Their filling resembles more like whipped creme with the classic cannoli shell. Overall the pastries are pretty decent, but not the best I've had.

Yelp
Just got delivered by Uber Eats from them and wow their bakeries are delicious first time I ordered there but definitely not the last one the best of my order was clearly the awesome tiramisu that I ordered so Delicious OMG unbelievable

Yelp
With some absolutely decadent desserts including the apparent house special cronut; @lacornetteria loudly asks the question :"How dare you have the audacity to believe you're going to stick to that diet?" and we couldn't help but bow our heads in shame as we took another bite of these cripy outside, fluffy inside, fried little wonders topped with excellent cream flavours.

Yelp
Cute bakery in a nice neighborhood. Some coffee shops already offer La Cornetteria cronuts, but coming here for the fresh ones makes the experience so much better. Small seating area and WiFi available if you'd like to sit down, enjoy a cannoli or another baked good next to your coffee. People who work here are also very welcoming and friendly. As for the cronuts, both the ricotta and the Nutella were absolutely delicious. The creaminess of the ricotta cronut made it a favorite for me, but if you like your pastries on the sweeter end, go for the Nutella cronut. Cronuts are a bit overpriced, but you're partially paying for the experience.

Yelp
Our friends recommended this place and I couldn't thank them enough for doing so!! This place has absolutely great dessert! The best combination is a Canolli with some cold Coffee!! The place is cosy but has limited seating so it's best to takeaway! The service is excellent and the server is very friendly. We are now regulars at this spot! Would highly recommend it.

Yelp
Went specifically for the cronut! My husband surprised me because I fell in love with cronuts at the original place in NYC. This place did not disappoint. The staff was great and the cronut did not disappoint. A cronut is a donut and croissant combo. They are cheaper than in NY which is nice. Quality is still great. Not as good as the original makers but I would totally get it again because it was still great and cheaper lol. Cannoli was also fresh ! Also helps when the Atmosphere and service is nice. And did I mention free WiFi!

Yelp
Dropped by around 4 PM on a Saturday and there was nothing left to buy! Place closes at 6 PM and the young lady was more focused on cleaning up the shop to close up early. When asked if this was all they had for today, she shrugged and basically told me the place closes up soon. No sweetheart that's in 2 hours and it's Saturday! All is being offered are leftovers. Another client came in just after me, standing behind me.... we locked eyes, shrugged and left at the same time. Yeaaaaah, don't bother coming here if you're not here within the first couple of hours of operation. Went to another bakery that closes at 8 PM and they had lots of awesome stuff still available, pointing out which things were freshest. Might be back one day, if it's in the AM. If I do, I'll change my review, until then...

Yelp
Holy cronuts! This place usually offers the same type of cronut every day (custard when I went) and then another that varies from day-to-day. The specials of the day have included salted caramel, coffee, praline, and many more. These desserts were meant for me because they're cute and delicious. I loved the praline which which wasn't as sweet as the others, but so flaky when I bit into it. The sprinkling of sugar all around is also a nice addition of texture and sweetness. Also tried a Caprese panini from here which was good. However, the cronuts are definitely the hot item here. It's worth mentioning that the place has a wonderful owner. We had a great conversation with him the first time we came in and he was such a friendly guy.

Yelp
Zeppole and cennolli were both really delicious. The whipped cream had something special in there and made them strode out from all the other pastry shops. But the pecan tart was below average. The crust was really hard and tough and the pecan filling was tasteless. Also, I was quite disappointed in their cleanness. The spoons they gave us, one for the coffee and one for the pecan tart, both were dirty. I didn't bother going back to the counter and ask for another one, but they truly disgusted us.

Yelp
Location: Little Italy, on the Main. You've probably walked be in a hundred times without even noticing this place, unless of course, you happened to be walking by while they were baking. Then the smell probably pulled you in. The place: Small, nothing fancy. The goods: I stopped by to pick up some strawberry Cronettos to accompany my Olimpico coffee early Saturday morning. I'm generally not a fan of donuts and neither is my date, however we both got great enjoyment out of those Cronettos, let me tell you. I was worried they would be sickeningly sweet but was pleasantly surprised, as this wasn't the case. The strawberry cream was super light and while there was a little too much brown sugar (?) on the doughnut (it ended up in my lap of course), I didn't find this pastry to be heavy at all. Great flavor, though a little messy to eat! Make sure you've got some napkins! Service: OK. Price point: Honestly, at $4 a pop, they're expensive. I think a more reasonable cost would be $2 each.
google avatar

Eunice R.

Yelp
This review is ONLY for one cronut: the pistachio cream filled one! Oh my word! I could eat just the cream with a spoon! In fact I'm making sure I eat another one before I leave Montreal. Make sure you try this
google avatar

Romy C.

Yelp
This shop looks decent and small. The cronuts were not that great. They have this yellow sugary topping that completely clashes and over sweetens the cronut because of its vanilla filling. They're also pretty small. I tried an apricot tarte? It's nothing impressive. I guess overall both pastries have very typical Italian pastry tastes to them. Nothing for me to want to try again. The customer service was okay. Not the best but not the worst. Overall not something that my taste buds cared for.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute bakery that would be a great place to stop without the cronuts. With the cronut they are worth a trip if you're anywhere in Montreal. The neighborhood is a great place to start or finish a bike around the city. I don't remember how much my cronut set me back, but apparently it was $4 and I forgot after the delicious experience.

Yelp
Great little bakery based on what I took all I had was a coffee and one of their cornetti the cheese one had a nice conversation with who I believe was the owner . I really enjoyed my sweet little snack forgot to take a photo lol . It's not cheap just a bit pricey but no different if you to go to Starbucks but I find what I had here was way better. If your near by try it I'm defiantly coming back to try other things.

Yelp
Went on a tuesday around noon (so you'd think everything would be fresh), i picked up cronuts and cannolis. The cronuts which are 4$/each!!! were stale and disgusting...I've had cronuts many times so I know what they're supposed to taste like. To make matters worse, the cannolis were just as gross. The ricotta had a whipped cream texture, I honestly don't know if i can call it Ricotta...and the cookie shell was overcooked. Never been more disappointed by a said "Italian bakery" in my life, I felt like i was eating something from a depanneur owned by people who would never know the difference.

Yelp
Cute little pastry shop with very nice staff, a pretty good choice for a lazy afternoon to catch up with friends. Their pastry is good but not outstanding
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Cronetto? Yes, please! I got to try two variations of this Italian "cronut" - original custard and then Nutella which was flavor of the week (I think). These were my first cronuts, but they were amazing....everything I imagine a cronut should be - sweet, flaky, light yet indulgent. I could eat one every day! We also tried custard donuts and macarons. The donut was filled to the brim with custard - a perfect (if naughty) breakfast. The macarons were delicate and crumbly when bitten. I'm not a macaron expert, but they would good - the only quibble would be that they were inconsistent size-wise.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh cornetti daily, and they deliver! We rubbernecked this place a bunch of times before trying it but once we finally did, my date said "well, I'm probably going to get one of those every time I walk by from now on forever." Like a brioche-y croissant filled with whipped ricotta cream (or custard, or pistachio or strawberry cream) a cornetta is a little poof of just right. This small café is on a relatively under-developed and condo-stacked section of St Laurent, but there are bright spots throughout and La Cornetteria is among them.
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
After reading that La Cornetteria had their own version of the cronut, the cronetto, I couldn't resist swinging by to try one while in the area. It's a tiny cafe that has been nicely decorated and there are some very nice aromas that greet you when you enter. The cronetto costs $4 so it is a little on the pricey side but if you try it once it is definitely worth it. It's filled with custard, flaky and sweet. I enjoyed it quite a bit although it was kind of messy to eat. They also make a really good capuccino which totally beats out chains like Starbucks or Second Cup. I definitely need to go back to this place to try more of their pastries but the next time I'd go for their cornetti which also looked really good.

Yelp
Hard to take a walk in Little Italy and not stop by. The staff here are all super friendly and they let Hibou come in no problem (they also have a French Bulldog.) I love all of the yummy pastries and they range from light and fluffy croissants, to full on custardy heavy like their famous cronut. Their coffee is also delicious, but they really need to stop making their lattes the same temperature of the sun, seriously scorching hot!
google avatar

Sadia H.

Yelp
Okay pastry shop for the cornettis (mini cronuts). They have zeppoles too year round (not only in March) if you call and order ahead of time. The mango cronuts were the best cronuts there but very sweet nonetheless. The filling and the flaky exterior are really good.

Yelp
At my first viait to this italian pastry shop, it comes the choice of the sweet pastry you are going to eat or dip in your cappuccino: I come closer to the counter and I start pointing out the various croissants. Which kind of croissant is that? apricot jam. That one? wholemeal and honey. That over there? chocolate. There instead? custard and apple. Then I understand by the impatient tone of the waitress that I have asked too many questions, so I begin by saying with little certainty: then I'll take a croissant with... moment of reflection during which I mentally try all the combinations... nothing inside. Is there a plain croissant? And I grab with an apologetic smile the delicate croissant, often still warm, that the waitress hands me wrapped in a paper towel. Then it comes the time to order coffee. Usually in the bar at breakfast time there is a large crowding all around the coffee counter: the usual, macchiato, ristretto, corto, a cappuccino, a latte macchiato, a long coffee. Requests are made in a tone that ranges from brisk to pleading, this being me when trying for the fourth time to order a coffee and someone else next to me gets his order before me.Took a caffe latte as my favorite choice.
google avatar

Kit L.

Yelp
I really try few times here and each time I feel like they don't want my business. Their pastries are dried. This time they crossed the line. I ask for a "espresso glace" and instead she gave me an expresso. When I clarify what i ordered, she insist it was my mistake and then went to grab 1 ice cube under the counter with her hand and threw it in my expresso...at least respect the expresso u made!

Yelp
When visiting Montreal, I knew I had to try this place for the cronuts. I stopped in while on my way home from Montreal and picked up 2. They were a bit smaller than I imagined, but given the sweetness once I got into them, the size is good. They really are as tasty as I had hoped, though *really* oily and greasy. I would have a hard time paying $8 for 2 again, but I definitely enjoyed them.
google avatar

Stephen R.

Yelp
The cronuts are alright, though were a little dry. I arrived early on a Friday morning to pick up two cronuts, and was dismayed that I did not see any in the case. When I asked if they were available, the person at the register called to the back, and out came the owner carrying two full trays of freshly made cronuts. Despair turned into joy. Not only did they have cronuts, but I would be the first one to have a taste. I eagerly ordered two cronuts - one for me and one for my boyfriend - as well as an espresso macchiato (they use Lavazza espresso, so the coffee is pretty decent!). The cronuts, however, could use some improvement. They were a tad dry for my liking, even though they were fresh. I tried the custard flavor. The custard was piped on top of the cronut, rather than inside the cronut, like the original version found in New York. Perhaps the cronuts would be less dry if the custard were piped inside the cronut and the cronut were topped with an additional glaze. Overall, the cronut experience here was ok. I don't think they were worth $4 a piece though.
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
LOVED the cronuts! Also had great coffee & cornettis. Definitely go between 8am and 2pm if you want cronuts - they sell out super quick!
google avatar

Magdalena O.

Yelp
Was so excited to try the custard cronut and was so disappointed. The cronut tasted artificial and had a mushy cardboard texture. Did not taste fresh like so many other pastries from bakeries around town. So much hype for nothing.
google avatar

Sabrina L.

Yelp
The best cannolis you can find in the city! Located in the little Italy, La Cornetteria offers indulgence typical Italian desserts along with amazing coffee! Do try out their cornetti freshly baked every day. These croissant-like pastries are much more similar to brioche in texture with a subtle orange blossom flavor and are filled with yummy creamy fillings such as nutella, ricotta, pistachio, etc. Their cannolis have a fluffy and light ricotta filling along with a crisp and amazing shell! And in addition to all these delicious goodies, La Cornetteria delivers as well!!! I love love love that place!
google avatar

Valentina D.

Yelp
The cornetti bring back memories of Italian summers spent stumbling out of clubs in the wee hours searching for a sugar fix. The pastries are as authentic as the very sweet and friendly owner.

Thao N.

Yelp
I was passing by and I stopped in when I remembered reading the reviews here. I have to say, my cousin and I walked in not expecting much and we were very pleasantly surprised! The cornetti reminded me of trips to Italy sipping coffee with a cornetto standing at the counter! I only had the whipped ricotta cornetto and it was absolutely divine! It is a little out of the way for me but I would definitely make the detour!
google avatar

Sabrina N.

Yelp
Oh. My. God. Perfection in a cronut!! Definitely worth the a*s expansion.... The taste, the flakiness, the sugarness... A must try!!!
google avatar

Jessi J.

Yelp
The pastries and coffee were really delicious. The owner is very sweet and friendly. He gave us lots of great recommendations of things to do during our stay in Montreal. Plus they have free Wifi. Overall a wonderful experience!

Lily P.

Yelp
I tried the iconic cronut in the pistachio flavour. First of all it is tiny for the price (4$), the taste was okay, certainly not amazing. There was a good amount of pistachios but it remained quite bland.
google avatar

Helene C.

Yelp
I haven't been to the original cronut bakery, the long lines are too intimidating. But thanks to La Cornetteria, I've got a taste of the famous croissant/donut. :)
google avatar

Albert H.

Yelp
Sorry but the cronetto doesn't make justice to the original cronut, still good though. In the other hand, I had a delicious gluten free lemon pie which was to die for!
google avatar

Krista K.

Yelp
Finally got around to trying the famous Cronetto and yes its as good as everyone is saying. Very quaint little place but not cheap. I wasn't blown away by anything including the coffee but it was yummy .

yala f.

Yelp
Amazing Cornetti!!! Having this stuffed italian style croissant brought me back to Italy instantly!!
google avatar

Yelp
absolutement fantastique! i loved that this little shop was so cute, the proprietors attentive and the cronuts just divine! this was actually my first taste of a cronut and i thoroughly enjoyed it. they also have free wifi and for a traveling tourist, this provided me with a great opportunity to sit down, relax, enjoy some snacks, and catch up on social media :)

Max P.

Yelp
Wife and I split the two varieties of croissant doughnut they had that day (custard and nutella). Haven't had a cronut elsewhere so can't really compare, but this was probably the best pastry I've ever had. I'd strongly recommend a trip here on your way to Marche Jean Talon (it's just a few blocks away).

Mari S.

Yelp
I just couldn't fathom spending $4.00 on a cronetto again when everything else in the display looked very good and was cheaper, I might come back to try a cornetto or a cannoli. The counter person was very nice and even gave us a free gluten-free cookie to try. So we might be back, just not for the cronetto as the combination of a croissant and a donut is not something I would want to eat again, it was extremely sweet and greasy.
