La Pozontlería – Oaxaca, Mexico - Gastro Obscura

"Pozontle is a ceremonial drink hailing from the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca, particularly the town of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag. It is a refreshing, lightly sweet blend of cacao, corn, the cocolmecatl vine, water, and panela. While you can find plenty of stands selling its frothier, more popular relative—tejate—throughout Oaxaca de Juárez, the city boasts few spots that serve pozontle. One of these rare vendors lies within a small, quiet farmers market that’s tucked away from the bustle of the city’s larger mercados. La Pozontlería is one of a dozen food stands lining La Cosecha market. It can be easy to miss: From the street, it’s just an open doorway. But once you walk through to the back, you’ll find a small, colorful outdoor space with vendors selling traditional Mexican and specifically Oaxacan fare. Founded in 2016, the market promotes organic and homemade offerings. While you won’t find any soda inside, you will find traditional beverages such as tejate, pulque, and pozontle. Women traditionally prepare pozontle. At La Pozontlería, the female vendor first combines the ingredients in a jícara, a cup made from a hollowed-out gourd, then takes out a long, wooden tool known as a molinillo. She places it between her hands and rubs them fiercely together, building up a mocha-tinted foam. When the foam coats the top of the drink, it’s ready. Jícara in hand, take your pozontle to one of the market’s communal picnic tables. There, in the shade of a tent beneath a rainbow of dangling papeles picados, take a sip. Its flavor should resemble a light chocolate milk. If the ingredients start to settle, just give it a quick stir with the accompanying wooden spoon. Pair your beverage with one of the market’s fine offerings—its garnachas, memelas, and tlayudas are particularly stellar—for a delicious taste of traditional Oaxaca. None" - Sam OBrien

Good Mercado in Oaxaca. Good Choice of food. I had a Falafel Bowl and a vegetarian omlette, horchata and tepache. All was delicious. For vegans and vegetarians perfect, the prices are good and fair aswell.

Great place to buy local organic produce, eat and enjoy a delicious meal. Try to omelet de chayote, very good.

Google
What a lovely place. I made two trips and ordered from 4 stalls and all were top notch quality. The mole tamal, memelas, tejate and an agua fresca where all 5/5! The place is nice and quiet and the vendors aren’t hounding you. It’s an open market though they provide cover throughout. Cheaper than most sit down restaurants but only a little more expensive than the typical stall or cart in Oaxaca while knowing you are getting legit great food

This market is a hidden gem within the city of Oaxaca. The atmosphere is very different than the larger markets. It is quiet and calm and out of the elements, but still outside. We were able to try a little bit from most stands there and I can honestly say every bite of food and sip of drink was delicious! Don’t hesitate to give it a try, you’ll probably want to return again and again.

This was my favorite market to visit. It’s peaceful and has a beautiful shaded area to eat. The food I had was delicious.

Came here twice and was an especially perfect location to kill time before going to ADO bus station nearby and getting our last fix of local, natural, iconic Oaxacan foods and drinks. Fun to sample many things at once at very fair prices. Well shaded and comfortable space to eat and hang out or read a book.

One of my favorite places in Oaxaca. I don’t remember how many times I’ve been here in the last two weeks for the wonderful juices, tamales, breakfast or lunch. It has a lot of choices and it’s reasonably priced. A bit on the gringo side, but all the vendors appear to be local. Highly recommend.

Google
It's basically a food market such as what you find in a traditional market, but much more relaxing since there is no traffic or hecklers selling you stuff. Don't forget to leave a tip in the weaved baskets though if you think the service is good. Prices are very reasonable.

Yelp
Cute little mercado that feels miles away from everything once you're inside. In a relatively nondescript doorway, you end up in a lovely courtyard with maybe about 12-15 vendors with their own stalls and a handful of picnic style benches and seats to enjoy your food and drink. We ended up here twice on two different tours, so we also got the chance to try some memelitas, some green juice, and some mezcal. It's definitely a place I'd stop by if I were in the area.

Yelp
12/19/22 Inside La Cosecha Oaxaca there are maybe 15 stalls, mostly for delicious food and drink. When ever I come here the very first thing I do is buy a medium Tejate. This is a deceivingly filling drink, being a mixture of maíz, chocolateé, organic simple syrup, and flor de Rosita. Which in told is the flower of the cacao tree. Delicious! 12/20/22 Today I'm trying a Tlayuda, which is a large blue corn tortilla bean cheese and squash blossoms! It could have used more salt but that's probably just me. Well constructed and enough for two! Delicious

Yelp
Lovely little market. Somewhat hidden from the street but once you enter, you end up in a large courtyard, surrounded by various vendors. There are tables in the middle to sit and enjoy your comida/bebida. They don't have a massive selection but it's calm, unlike the central markets. Yet you're paying market prices and everything is really cheap. I saw a couple organic produce vendors, a few spots offering traditional fare (memelas, tlayudas, etc.), juice and agua fresca, indigenous beverages (tejate and pozontle), and some vegan/vegetarian options. I tried both tejate and pozontle and enjoyed both. I prefer the tejate. Great spot for a quick snack/drink or for grabbing some organic ingredients.

Yelp
La Cosecha is a fun place to eat. Several small stands selling lots of great organic food including the Oaxacan specialty "chapulines" or grasshoppers. Had a great meal. We went there for breakfast.

Yelp
Fantastic organic traditional food at beyond reasonable prices! One of my absolute favorite places to take lunch in Oaxaca. Try the memelas (20 pesos ) and a nice shot of mezcal (50 pesos) . Lots of vegan and vegetarian options. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
My friend recommended this place to me and I thought it was gonna be a big outdoor farmers market. It's a bit smaller than that but there were a number of organic stands selling amazing food at good prices. I still dream of the blue corn flavor in the memelas I ordered. No Maseca used here!
