Malaga: Where to Eat on Holiday

"A few steps away from Malaga Cathedral, in the historic city center, is the restaurant La Cosmo , a relaxed, modern place where you can let yourself be swept up in Andalusian flavors, especially those from the coast. At the helm is Chef Dani Carnero, who wanted to present the most traditional Malaga cuisine prepared using local ingredients, with an avant garde slant." - The MICHELIN Guide

La Cosmo

"If you’re looking for a modern and informal restaurant which also boasts a central location in the city, then look no further than La Cosmo, situated just a few steps behind the cathedral. Boasting an open kitchen and white-inspired colour scheme, the focus here is on the transparency and quality of all its ingredients and bringing added value to the locally sourced produce it uses. At La Cosmo, chef Dani Carnero, who is also at the helm of two other restaurants in the city (La Cosmopolita and Kaleja), is aiming for a more direct and fluid cooking concept that revives the traditions of Málaga’s cuisine and its maritime-inspired flavours." - Michelin Inspector

We came on a Thursday evening and didn't make a booking, so we were seated outside. It wasn't too cold so it was ok, but would have definitely preferred to be inside. We ordered the red prawns as a starter, the prawns themselves were very nice but i did wish the heads were cooked a little longer as the juice inside was still brown instead of red, and I'm never sure if it's saved to eat the head if the juice inside is still brown. We went with three moan dishes, the grilled squid was really good, and then the pork, the sauce was incredible and finally the duck, which was cooked very nicely with a very tasty sauce. We had the chocolate cake as a dessert and it was nice, wouldn't say it was spectacular though. This was the most expensive meal we had in Málaga, whole the food was good, I did feel like we could get really nice food with a cheaper price in Malaga. But if you are looking for a fine dinning experience, this could be a good option.

Top notch food. The steak tartare was probably the best version of the dish I had; granted, it's unconventional, but the sandwich style with fixings is so so good. Get a bar seat for the best view, the crew is energetic and watching them do their thing is a delight. The leek carbonara and the squid also stood out.

We had dinner here and sat inside at a table. Very nice smart restaurant, the service was generally good. All of the dishes we ordered were of excellent quality. One comment I have, is that we ordered the duck as our main course. The quality was excellent and cooked to perfection, but it looked very uninteresting as it was just a sliced duck breast with a brush of sauce on quite a large plate, served with a green salad which consisted of a small bowl of chopped lettuce. I personally would expect a far better presentation at this price point and quality of restaurant. However we did not let it spoil our evening. The quality of the wine was excellent and well priced,. it was Friday night it was very busy and the atmosphere was very good.

La Cosmo is a true hidden gem in the heart of Málaga, created by Chef Dani Carnero. The focus on seafood and fish is exceptional. We had the best oysters and scallops we've had in a long time. The menu features highly creative dishes, like a flan beautifully contrasted with the flavor of salty popcorn. The atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant, with attentive and friendly service. I would honestly return to Málaga just to dine here again – an absolute must-visit.

We visited La Cosmo in Málaga (Bib Gourmand 2025) for lunch, but unfortunately the experience left us rather disappointed. The food was flavorful and well presented, yet the portions were ridiculously small — €7 for a single tiny anchovy with a dot of burrata, or €24 for just a few slices of duck and a spoonful of sauce. The service, however, was the real letdown. Our waitress seemed completely disinterested — no smile, no engagement, and we waited ages just to have our order taken. We even had to ask twice for the wine we had already ordered. Olive oil for the bread was offered only after we had finished eating it. I had mentioned in the reservation that we were celebrating my mother’s birthday — a special occasion that went completely unnoticed. It also felt like the staff preferred to focus on local guests, and speaking English seemed to be an inconvenience for them. While the kitchen clearly has skill, the overall experience lacked warmth, care, and the sense of hospitality you would expect from a Bib Gourmand restaurant.

Had dinner for two at La Cosmo after recommendations by waiter at sister restaurant La Cosmopolita. And the food was amazing!!! We started with a delicious cocktail, and delicious bread (🤤). For dinner, we went for: 1) tomato with basil oil and cottage cheese sauce 2) Leek a la carbonara 3) duck with homemade barbecue sauce and 4) octopus with piparra sauce. All dishes were, for us, a 10/10! 1) tomato with basil: we drank the sauce - and the tomatoes were firm and tasty 2) leek a la carbonara: WOW! If it's on the menu, and you love onion and carbonara, then this one is made for you. The soft leek that brings out the sweet, onion flavour, in combination with the egg yolk and saltiness of the parmisian... So delicious, and perfect to share as it is really rich in flavour. 3) Duck with homemade barbecue sauce: duck was cooked to perfection, and the sauce...... Incredible! One of is isn't a fan of the typical, cheap barbecue sauce, so was sceptic at first. But this one had the perfect balance of smokiness, salt and sweet! A real surprise, with a nice fresh salad (could personalle have a bit less vinegar for one of us). 4) Ultimately, we had the squid. Two little squids with piparra emulsion. So tasty, as we love a whole squid and cooked to perfection. Overall, for us a great experience. Personally regarding service & atmosphere: we like a bit more warmth & atmosphere from staff when going dinner. However, we do understand that when a restaurant like this wants to achieve a certain level of experience, this type of service fits. I think you do experience a different vibe when you are seated at the bar, and get to talk to the chefs a bit. For two people, we spent 115eu and had 4 dishes, 3 glasses of wine and 2 cocktails. Thank you La Cosmo, see you soon!

I recently had lunch at La Cosmo in Málaga and had a fantastic experience. The food was delicious and arrived quickly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. What really stood out was my waiter, Emilio he was positive, attentive, and made me feel very welcome. Thanks to his recommendation, I tried the flan for dessert and did not regret it! So far, this is the best restaurant I’ve tried in Málaga. Highly recommended for both the food and the excellent service.
