Jorge Guzman, of Surly’s Brewer’s Table Will Open La Crosse Distilling Co. Restaurant | Eater Twin Cities

"Having hired Jorge Guzman, a finalist for the James Beard Best Chef Midwest in 2017, as executive chef and partner, the under-construction Wisconsin distillery slated to open at 129 Vine Street in the coming weeks will be the city’s first distillery and will feature a tasting room serving Guzman’s style of Mexican street foods using ingredients from the abundant farms in the Driftless region. The 10,000 sq. ft., two-story distillery will be open for lunch and dinner and will offer free tours of the expansive space, and anxious drinkers can join the distillery’s free fan club on its website for a chance to win the first bottle the distillery produces." - Cinnamon Janzer

Google
Just going to list facts, no opinions. #1. Brussel sprouts, would not recommend. #2. Took an hour for the dinner course of our meal to reach the table #3. The burger was half cooked to medium and half raw, uncooked ground beef. #4. While waiting to re-fire the burger, my partners tacos sat under the heatlamp wilting the cilantro.

Just stopped in to support local businesses and I will say their Rye Whiskey is pretty close to Jack Daniel’s in my estimation but be careful…bit stronger than Jack so you may need some ice enhancement! Very brief but positive interaction with the staff and very good experience overall! Staying in a local hotel at the time but had to give them a whirl! Recommended!

Google
Stopped a couple times on our La Crosse weekend and had excellent and attentive service both times from Joseph. The Asian spiced Crispy Brussels Sprouts were terrific. The Rye Old Fashioned was in the top 5 all time for me and my wife liked her Nutty Blueberry just as much. Definitely will become a regular stop for us on future trips to La Crosse.

Google
Stopped by for a quick bite and was really surprised by the atmosphere and the short yet efficient menu. I recommend the wings

We did not eat but enjoyed the beverages. Addison can pour water with the best of them...as well as make fantastic drinks and recommend flights. Fun place with good drinks!

Had a great experience at La Crosse Distilling. Fast friendly service, a great beer and an awesome Bloody Mary started our visit. We got the ridiculously good brussel sprouts and a wonderful Nashville chicken sandy. I'd definitely come back next time I'm in town

Google
A great Sunday dinner and Rotary Christmas lights. My Rueben was delicious.

Google
1st time patron. We were waiting on 2 other people to arrive and sat at the bar. I had a whiskey old fashioned (Wisconsin) sour. I finished that and had a whiskey old fashioned (Wisconsin style) sweet! Both were awesome. My wife had a screwdriver and she liked the in house made vodka so much we brought a bottle home. The Brussel sprouts were case. I had the Nashville chicken sandwich on a Linda’s bakery bun with seasoned fries. She had the burger and fries. The food was excellent. The drinks were outstanding. FYI we were chatting with the bartender and she gave us recommendations for a local breakfast restaurant. All and all an outstanding little place in Downtown La crosse, Wisconsin. Great drinks, great food, excellent staff and the light display down the street.

Yelp
Came here after a farm tour event. Was really impressed with the cocktails, and experience here. Had an opportunity to tour the back as well and learn about the distilling process for the different types of spirits. I had the gazpacho-tini, first I tried it with tomato juice, the classic way. It was delicious! Almost reminded me of the amazing pickle martini at another favorite spot of mine, Driftless Glen. The second time I had it I opted for the carrot juice version. The tomato version was much better. My friend had the Livin-lav-ish. That was good as well. Gin heavy drink. I would visit this again if I was in town. The place is really nice.

Yelp
LCDC has a vibrant feel both inside and out, which means you're sure to have a good time. Our hotel was nearby and we walked everywhere, so we stopped in two days in a row. It's a no-brainer that as a distillery they are going to have talented mixologists serving delicious drinks (and I can assure you even the n/a "cocktails" displayed just as much creativity and flavor as their counterparts). The servers we had both days were great--cheery, had great thoughts and suggestions on the menus, and were attentive. The only stumble was with the food. While the Lettuce Boats were fantastic, and the Smoked Pork Sando with fries was good, the Fried Brussels Sprouts were over-fried to the point they were so dry that they were hard to swallow and the wagyu patty in my husband's LCDC Signature Burger was unseasoned and raw in the middle (but kudos to the server who saw this and adjusted our bill; it was unexpected as we weren't going to say anything). One plus we noted is the patio is pet-friendly, so we will be bringing our pup with us next time.

Yelp
Stopped over an hour before close today (Saturday) & we were immediately let know that we couldn't get food because it had been a really busy day. No bueno

Yelp
Fantastic experience! Try the Robber's Rye Whiskey. It has a great medium profile and is not spicy. Mouthfeel was excellent and equaled the flavor. Service is incredible...staff are bright and appear to be happy to be here. That goes a long way, folks. The place is clean and patrons are having a great time...smiling, laughing, telling stories. Food looks very tasty. I'm on keto, but I'd really like one of their burgers and fries. I can smell and see them at the next table. Whoa!

Yelp
There's plenty of space outside and inside. All the drinks were so tasty and my favorite was the earl grey mule, so unique and subtle earl grey taste! We all tried a variety of foot and seriously it was so delicious, you can't go wrong. The potatoes were the best with the ricotta cheese and chives. It was so fun sitting outside on the patio and the service was so accommodating to our group!

Yelp
LCDC is where it's at! Plenty of street parking, super modern building- great space. Friendly waitress. Simple menu but lots of drink options! I had the Kiki melon freeze. Super tasty and boozy. I liked it! The little dried fruit- great little bit at the end once it was saturated in the drink. Win! BIRRIA BEEF TACOS! Delicious! All the components put together... crushed it. Highly suggest ordering them. I was like what is chihuahua cheese? You just need to know it was good! The kids were not as impressed with their kids meals. My son was not a huge fan of their mac and cheese. But all three adults were impressed.

Yelp
So good!!! They don't make Manhattans, but made one for me. No vermouth. I loved it. Service was stellar. Food was yum. The ceviche needed more shrimp, however. It was more of a glorified pico de gallo. Add more shrimp. Ambiance awesome.

Yelp
Located in a beautiful town on a main street, with easy street parking out front. It's a distillery, brewery and restaurant. I stopped in for lunch and to a sample a few beers. They can make a bunch of their dishes vegan upon request. I was just looking for something light, so I got their harvest salad ($14) without the feta to make it vegan. It came out in about 5 minute in a very generous portion. Very good quality ingredients, with farro, hazelmut, arugula and watercress, fennel, and rutabaga, served with a nice white balsamic dressing. Very nice. Good place for a vegan meal and spirits/beers in this charming small town.

Yelp
Always love visiting these guys for a good happy hour and friendly people who deliver great drinks.

Yelp
This has been one of my favorite restaraunts for years up until this most recent visit. I saw that they had a new chef and new menu starting so we went to check it out. For years the food had been amazing. I wouldn't have changed a single thing but this visit was such a disappointment. We always order the same thing- birria tacos with fries, an appetizer and drinks. Their fries have been the main reason we keep coming back. They used to have homemade shoe string fries that were delicious, and our plate came out with basic bland unseasoned frozen fries. This was very disappointing. Next, the tacos tasted the same but the birria dip/juice was different. It tasted like water--no flavor. Third, we decided to order one of the new menu items, the spicy crab dip, specifically because it was described as having "house-made chips". The chips that came out were obviously not house made and just came from some cheap bag. We won't be returning until hopefully things go back to the way they were! It's not a cheap place to eat at, so I was expecting the same delicious food quality food and that was just not delivered this time.

Yelp
I stopped in yesterday, Saturday, 22 August, early afternoon so the inside bar was rather quiet..... so it gave me a chance to chat up the friendly bartender Tannter while he made me a delicious Wisco Old Fashioned. This is only my third or fourth time in in as many years but La Crosse Distilling has consistently had the loveliest of staff and the most delicious cocktails! Bonus I also got to meet distiller Mitch.... thank him for the wonderful spirits he's putting out! Thank you for always proving you were a wise stop to make when I come to town.... until we imbibe again!
google avatar

Christine W.

Yelp
The service was good. The shrimp tacos were amazing. I would not do the carrot salad again. The dressing was great, but otherwise there wasn't any flavor to it. We will be back as there are other items on the menu we want to try. Not pictured were some drinks that were delicious as well!

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing! From the minute you walk into the groovy, open loft space, to the minute the ultra friendly server seats you, to the amazing menu- this place has it all! The smoked wings are my favorite! Everything is very tasty and it's all great! The menu is small yet expansive. There's something for everybody. The place is pet friendly as well. Great space, great food, great drinks, great help! What else could you ask for?

Haley D.

Yelp
Such a great dinner place. Their food is amazing especially their wing appetizers. The drinks change pretty regularly and are high quality! Service is always great. I've never had a bad experience here. I love the ambiance here in the middle of summer when those big windows are open and there's a nice breeze coming in. Very lovely place.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place to grab a few drinks and their appetizers and menu looked great. The bartenders were awesome! I asked about sampling the different liquors and should I buy a flight or what. Our bartender said she would suggest I do the "cheap" route and just ask to sample some so I did. She let me try 4 and the barreled gin was pretty tasty! We ordered some drinks the honey dew I love you was refreshing and the shrimp tacos with the side of house made ranch was delicious! Friendly place and will actually be going back again tonight for some drinks and apps and to buy some gin.

Yelp
Great escape from the heat! Industrial/wood decor plus doors they can open to expand seating. Good food, great service!!

Yelp
We came here for drinks so I can only speak to the drinks, but boy can I speak to them! Or maybe they spoke to me! We had 8 people so I think we tried every single drink on the menu, but the one we were all fascinated with was the pinkity drinkity! Such a unique drink and really pretty to look at. I had a simple lemonade and vodka which was not simple! They made it fresh and it was the best "simple" drink I've probably ever had! The bartender (Tucker I think-I hope that's right) was so sweet. Answered all my dumb questions and was just so nice to talk to. Definitely made you want to come back again to just hang out at the bar. Great experience!

Mark O.

Yelp
I got takeout, two dishes: Blackened Brussel sprouts in a moderately spicy sauce and shrimp tacos. The tacos were bland -- the strongest taste for me was the corn of the taco. But the Brussel sprouts more than made up for it -- they were the best I've tested, rich deep flavor and just hot enough to be interesting. One out of two isn't normally that good, but this time I'd go back for the the sprouts.

Yelp
Food was just adequate. Our server was excellent. Nice environment with great indoor & outdoor dining options.

Yelp
Really nice distillery and brew pub in a very cute area of La Crosse. The interior is really open and they've got a small, uncovered, dog-friendly patio. The server and staff were super helpful and friendly; answering all our questions about the beer, liquor, and food. The salad was great. Very light and refreshing with richness from the beets, bite from the radish, and a nicely acidic cilantro dressing. The potatoes are the real star of the show: amazing. I'd made the 4 hour drive just for them, really. Beer and spirit flight were ok, but nothing to write home about. Their cocktails look pretty fun, though. I'll try some next time.

Terry B.

Yelp
Driving thorough on 90, stopped in to see town. Reviews were good so decided to stop in. Very glad we did. Food was great. Nashville Chicken and Tacos were excellent. Loved the patio for our dog. Will stop again.

Jay B.

Yelp
Very disappointing. We had high hopes for some good beer and food, but it wasn't to be. I have no idea why, but this was the third bar/restaurant in a row that was out of at least one beer on tap. I ordered their IPA and it was terrible. Truthfully, I think it was the worst IPA I've ever had, (certainly the worst I can remember) and left most of it in the glass. You should know I say that as someone who owns a minority interest in a craft brewery. The "vibe" wasn't good, and I did not want to risk further disappointment by ordering food. I'll also point out this is the first restaurant I've been to that charges a 3% fee if you want to pay with a credit card. It's not like the prices are any less than other businesses they compete with, so to me it's an annoyance for customers. Call me old school but I prefer to be treated as a valued customer not someone to extract every dollar they can from.

Yelp
We were visiting La Crosse for a work function. We checked out some reviews and decided that the ambience and drink selection here fit the bill. We both started with a cocktail and had a beer as our second drink. I ordered a salad with protein add-on and he ordered the tacos. The server was awesome and made sure that I was OK with spicy food (I was not) and offered dressing alternatives. The lemon vinaigrette turned out to be delicious and fit the salad well. The tacos were delicious, or so I was told, and he ate every bite. It was a bit loud, but that wasn't their fault. There was a party upstairs and we could have sat outside. We will definitely stop back here if we are back in town.
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
Outstanding beer and Wings! Friendly, attentive service at the bar. I wasn't able to have a second beer but they let me taste the "Feathered Drumline", a Stout so high in ABV I think it's actually a barley wine.

Jose Q.

Yelp
Wings are great, but drinks are on the weak side. The beer is decent. It looks like most drink mixes are pre mixed maybe leading to the problem.

Yelp
Was very excited to go there. I was here visiting for work, and I had walked the city and landed on what I thought would be a great place to eat. Unfortunately, there were storms that evening. Mainly rain, but threat of tornadoes. They announced that they would be shutting down early but we could stay and finish our meals. Around 6:30 we were ushered out. They did not offer me a safe spot to stay out of the rain and the potential tornadoes, instead they pushed me out into a downpour. I told them I was walking but they didn't seem to care. I have never heard of a restaurant doing this. Hell, even Home Depot keeps you in the store during event like this. As I walked back to the hotel in the pouring rain, the tornado sirens finally started but stopped within a few minutes. They had no regard to whether I would be caught up in a serious storm or not. The storm passed, no tornado, just a bunch of ticked off and wet, customers. Shame on the management for their decision.

Yelp
Birria, the Nashville chicken hot, and papas matchas are delicious. Smokehouse platter super mid, dry and chewy:( food is a hit or miss sometimes
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome craft drinks and delicious food! Ambiance was upscale and modern. Service was kind and attentive! One of the better spots in La Crosse
google avatar

Geoff P.

Yelp
To start, the cocktails and service were both very good. I love the layout of the space and the patio was lovely to sit on in the summer. We ordered several appetizers. Top of the list was easily the catfish bites--light, flaky batter and very tasty. We also enjoyed the potatoes quite a bit. The wings were overcooked and a bit on the dry side. We both agreed the least successful was the beer cheese dip. The dip itself was good, but it was served with a small pile of randomly-sized brats and nothing else. I'd suggest serving it with some toasted bread or pretzels to "bulk up" the plate and give the diner more sop up the dip. Would I come back? Yes, for the cocktails if nothing else. I would almost certainly try some additional food items as well--the catfish is the only one I would absolutely repeat.

Kurt O.

Yelp
Wonderful food. Always superb service and a great atmosphere. Willvbe back. I absolutely love this place

Yelp
Worked with La Crosse Distilling Co. to host my husband's 60th birthday celebration. Where do I start as everything was perfect! Cindy, the event coordinator handled everything superbly from start to finish. Leading up to the event she was spot on with all recommendations from food choices to amounts. Really appreciate that the question came up during the early decision process on special dietary requests, we had several and I probably wouldn't have thought of that if the question hadn't been asked. During the event she was on duty and kept everything on track. The social period with small bites (chips, homemade pico, classic deviled eggs) was perfect and Kept our guests engaged while we waited for the guest of honor. The entrees (Spring mix salad and Caesar salad with homemade dressings on the side, smokehouse bar - smoked pork ribs and chicken with Mac & Cheese and Chili Lime Shrimp fajita bar with black beans and cilantro rice) absolutely delicious. The Mac & Cheese was simply sublime, some of the best I've ever had. I could have made a meal of the Mac & Cheese with any of the added proteins. However, I had to save room to taste a little of everything. The smoked pork ribs (my husband's favorite item along with the Mac&Cheese) and chicken were done perfectly with a nice Smokey flavor. In fact, there was no Mac&Cheese, ribs or shrimp left at the end. The chili lime shrimp was cooked perfectly and so tasty, my favorite item along with the Mac&Cheese. I wanted to go back for more but restrained myself. There was plenty of food for everyone, many people went back for seconds. There was very little chicken and some of the fixings left at the end - Mac&Cheese, ribs and shrimp were gone. The bartender and servers were very attentive, friendly and efficient, nobonechad to wait very long to wet their whistle. Really have to give a shout out and say job well done by the executive chef! It was a very busy Saturday with two other events in the downtown area. Everything was on time, fresh, tasty and visually appealing. The relaxed atmosphere on the Mezanine gave our group of 50 an opportunity to gather, nosh and socialize while enjoying the city view or watch the inner workings of the distillery. If you're planning an event in La Crosse or just looking for tasty food I highly recommend La Crosse Distilling Co.
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
So, I'll start with the good. The drinks are very tasty and the fries were super good. That's where the good news stops. Our table of four shared the chips n salsa, papas machas, and smoked wings (very dry). Neither of these appetizers were anything special. Later we ordered the chicken and catfish sandwich's. Again, the food was nothing special. If I ever return it would be for drinks only...I won't get the food again.

Yelp
Wow!!! Being a visitor in LaCrosse we wanted to find a healthy restaurant that serves vegan/vegetarian options. This place hit the mark! Highly recommend the smoked trout for an appetizer. The fried Brussels sprouts were amazing. A tiny spicy for me but not for my hubby. We split the grain bowl and it more than enough food. The picture of the grain bowl is a half portion. They were kind enough to split the bowl for us. My new favorite place in LaCrosse!
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Loved the food here! My party ordered the birria tacos delicious! not a huge fan of their consomé but I see effort. Brussel sprouts are to die for! And the smoked wings are perfectly smoked and tender, they definitely over exceeded my expectations. I'll definitely be back and probably order the same items (don't judge me). Love the vibe inside and outside this place. They also have a little shop at the entrance. Customer Service was great and the food came very fast, considering how busy they were that day. It's a yes for me!
google avatar

Cynthia S.

Yelp
What a great place with interesting food and drink. The small Menu has been finely honed, crafted with care. We had excellent salads and appetizers. Finding something new was refreshing and it was great to not see the same old menu found most places. We were outside and it was so good to have our dog dozing at our feet.
google avatar

Brianna M.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this LaCrosse dining option, the atmosphere, the food and location are perfect for your LaCrosse experience. We visited for the first time prior to Rotary lights with our friends and children. The kids menu and food was excellent, fresh, and quick. The ingredients on the menu are innovative for the LaCrosse food scene.
google avatar

Kedar D.

Yelp
This is probably the swankiest, coolest spot in La Crosse and makes artisanal vodka, gin and whiskey from local Driftless farms (the "Driftless" is an unusual geographic formation in the Upper Midwest consisting of rolling hills, bluffs and rivers and has a decidedly different political bent than the rest of rural America; La Crosse is right in the middle of it). It also has labeled, creative vegan dishes. We started with the chips & salsa ($4) which has nice homemade chips and decent red and green salsas. For the price, you can't go wrong. The papas machas ($10) can be made vegan and consists of fried baby potatoes in a chili sauce with green onions. I really liked this dish; it's spicy, savory and has nice crunch mixed with softness. The kale caesar salad ($12) is vegan by default and nicely done with fresh kale and a lovely tahini dressing. The enchiladas can be made vegan with house-made seitan chorizo ($15). I thought this dish was tasty on a whole, though the seitan got mushy and the pickled beets had an overwhelming quantity of vinegar. I also had a gin and soda ($5) which tasted great, but features far more herbal/botanical gin than what I'm used to from store-bought varieties. Unfortunately La Crosse Distilling doesn't have any vegan desserts. Definitely stop by for an unusual, delicious meal and great spirits.
google avatar

William L.

Yelp
So good! This is in an older section of LaCrosse that has been preserved and updated. They have seating both inside and outside on a patio. They are just a short walk from the Mississippi river. It's not a huge menu but everything we ordered was very good. They have their own bloody mary mix. We tried this with their house vodka, really tasty. You can buy their spirits at the restaurant too. We ordered some wings and potatoes to start. Both excellent. The potatoes are called Papas Machas. Fried and in a chili sauce with jalapenos and ricotta. You need to get these! Also, recommend the Cuban sandwich and the walleye tacos. This is a great place to have lunch or a drink in a beautiful location.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Great food, great service, great prices. I can't recommend it highly enough. The wings were amazing in particular, and having cans of old style available was a really nice touch. We sat on the dog friendly patio with our two pups and were very happy!
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
This the 2nd time here for us. This time we really wanted to explore the menu. Great locally sourced ingredients. I personally felt they could have gone a little bolder on flavor and a few items I felt it was missing something that could have made it over the top. That being said it was still very good and it was nice to have some unique options that makes this place different than a lot of the other local places. Also I almost forgot.... great drinks! We left with a bottle of the Robbers Rye and Toodeloo Whiskey. I know; we have issues....
google avatar

Derrick G.

Yelp
Overall good place, I would recommend. Our family of 5 all ordered something different. I had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich and it was too spicy to finish. Really. It was "melt your face off" hot. Others enjoyed their burger, wings, mushroom cheese steak and walleye tacos. The old fashioned was really good, as was the witbier.

Yelp
Have been looking forward to giving this place a try since it opened and had all these wonderful social media posts. The building and interior are stunning. I can't wait to bring friends back here on a short trip from the cities. The drink list is fairly long, given they only had 6 spirits on the list. They also brew beer! There were so many drinks I wanted to try, but couldn't be tore up from the floor up. I settled on a seasonal drink called Snapdragon, which had a marshmallow rye Whiskey, vodka, Strawberry, snap pea and mint. Despite how strange it sounded, it was a great, refreshing spring drink. Hubs had one called This is the Whey with rye Whiskey, lemon, orange liqueur, peach tea and vanilla. I snagged a sip and it was also super spring like. The bar also had a list of standard cocktails, like Colorado bulldogs and margaritas. The current menu had a Spanish/Mexican flair. We ordered the patatas machas (basically, smashed potatoes) and some wings. The potatoes had a spicy peanut sauce with some ricotta; the wings came with a homemade ranch and jalapeño Buffalo sauce. Both were fantastic. The wings were also smoked amd dry rubbed, so just had this wonderful flavor on its own. The potatoes...mmmm...the peanut sauce definitely had a kick, but not overwhelming and the ricotta evened out the spice. It's definitely a bit of a drive, but I can't wait to come back.

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Burgers and fries are good, and so are the drinks. The issue is service. Ordered second drinks... sat and watched the waitresses stand around and talk. The place wasn't busy. Finished the food and stacked the trays, and were waiting still... and the drinks came. Sent them back. On our way out, the waitress, in her most obvious, monotone voice ever: "thank you have a great day." Imagine - there was still a tip. Bet that surprised her.

Carlene N.

Yelp
I will always recommend La Crosse Distillery. Food, drinks, and staff are phenomenal!

Yelp
Stopped in on a chilly Saturday afternoon for a beverage and lunch. We started with a Bloody Mary and Wisconsin Bulldog which were both tasty, but our favorites were the La Crosse Mule & Cucumber Lemonade (NA). For lunch we went with the grain bowl and Fried Chicken Sandwich. Both were delicious and would definitely get again. The grain bowl was light and fresh and the chicken sandwich was crispy and cooked to perfection. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Excellent drinks, tasty food, fun yet relaxing atmosphere. The food is unique and crafted by an expert chef that was brought in from the big city. The drinks harken back to a time several decades ago when experienced bartenders made fancy, unique drinks. Although these bartenders are younger, they craft the libations with expertise. Check this place out and be sure to get some of the cool merchandise.

Yelp
Food and service were wonderful. I like the Fieldnotes Gin and the Coffee Whiskey. Also enjoyed the stout. Service was wonderful. Food was lovely. Snippets of the Mississippi from the sidewalk seating where we ate.

Scot J.

Yelp
The service is the worst part about this place. The food is great. The atmosphere is great. But the service is absolute trash. It makes none of it worth your time. Skip the stupidly small menu, overpriced drinks, and rude incapable front of house staff. I have given this place more than a few chances and all have been disappointing experiences. The last being the most ridiculous. Ordered an appetizer and burger and waited over 2 hours. Never arrived. Paid for our drinks and left.. They suck here. PS - I'm a passive, non-confrontational human being who is extremely understanding. Case in point, This is my first review. I joined yelp just to write this review. All the result of this dump. Have a nice day.

Ethan B.

Yelp
Service sucks takes forever don't come with a group more than 8 or it will take an hour and a half. DONT COME HERE!!!!!
