When I pulled up to La Cucharita, I found a parking spot with ease. The parking lot is located directly in front of the restaurant and is shared with surrounding businesses, and it's a good size. This restaurant is located in between a laundromat and a night club, and there's a Kroger right around the corner from it. My first thought walking into the restaurant was how popular this place was. The restaurant isn't huge, but the amount of customers inside was reassuring that their food would be sublime. We were immediately greeted and seated by an enthusiastic waitress. After trying Colombian food for the first time in San Diego, CA, my husband was eager to order some of his favorites here. We decided to order the Empanadas de maiz family special which was $11.25 for 6 empanadas. We chose to get 2 each of the following: Pollo, Carne, and Queso. To spice it up a bit, we also ordered 2 Viagra Empanadas de trigo which were filled with shrimp and crab for $6.50. Lastly we ordered the Bandeja Paisa Carne for $17.99! Considering how packed this restaurant was, the food arrived quickly and accurately. We dug into the empanadas and determined the ones filled with queso were our favorites! I wouldn't particularly order the Viagra empanadas again because they were a little fishy, but they weren't terrible. Next we moved on to the Bandeja Paisa Carne and punctured the egg with our forks and mixed the yolk with the rice and beans. We sliced the blood sausage and peeled the freshly cut avocado. Since this was my first time trying Colombian cuisine, I took the first bite and I was hooked. There are so many complementary flavors in this dish. The pork belly was fried but packed with flavor & the texture was soft. Our kids also enjoyed everything which is surprising because they can be picky at times! Our experience was good, so I recommend trying this place out if you're in the area or just in the mood for some Latin cuisine.
