San Francisco’s Best Burritos | Eater SF

"Established in 1969, La Cumbre is a must-visit for burrito completionists, but isn’t the best day-to-day pick on this list. Still, as one of two credible contenders for the title of inventor of the Mission-style burrito, a burrito from La Cumbre can be a necessary nostalgia trip in a time when things feel all too unfamiliar." - Lauren Saria

Google
This ranks as the worst Mexican food joint I have ever been to. I ordered a super quesadilla, and I received a burrito and not even a full meal. The food was horrible, the cleanliness was terrible, and I am not sure what the hype is all about here. I will never return here ever again. However, people are free to make up their mind. I did not like, but that does not mean others will not. Please make your own judgement, but my judgement is clear. Good luck La Cumbre!

Courtney T.

Google
Been coming here ever since I was a kid and have always loved it! Even in college I look forward to coming back to have La Cumbre. Their burritos are always amazing and they have great service; it’s super fast and efficient. We usually order takeout because there aren’t that many spots to sit inside but their outdoor seating is cute!

Google
Wonderful Mexican food place in downtown San Mateo. Located next to the train station, it has a wide variety of burritos, tacos, salads, and other Mexican dishes to choose from. Delicious spicy sauce if you like spicy (green one). Plenty of parking in their own lot, on the street, or in the train station parking lot next door. Not a lot of seats for dining in, but perfect place for take out.

R J.

Google
I had high hopes for this place. It looks like it’s well known for the food and burritos but when I went in I saw flies just circling around the dining area around and the tacos I got were not too bad, just lacking in flavor. I feel like there could be improvements to make this place amazing. There’s potentially to obtain greatness and I think it’s possible.

Fulldistance G.

Google
What no tortilla chips? This place has been here for decades and decades. I first ate here in the Mid-eighties. The food is decent and the ambiance is casual. Right next to the train station on busy B street… great location.

Google
Bad service, no customer service oriented at all. $4.00 per taco, cold tortillas, full of beans and literally 7 small pcs of meet. You have the opción for the tip minimum 20% they don’t even give you and eye contact. I wasted 40.00 but learned not to give tip in advance and negotiate comeback to this place.

Google
***DONT COME HERE***This is probably honestly one of the worst restaurants in the area. THE PORTION SIZE IS PATHETIC! This is claimed to be a super shrimp burrito. I don’t know if I left the United States for 20 years or what but a super burrito should be the size that is twice the size of your hand. It should be enough to fill you stuffed and then have leftover the next day. This place is so stingy with their portion and is not at all worth $14. Go down the road to LA CORNETA in Burlingame and you get a way better deal for your money. Will never return and recommend that you don’t support this place. Don’t support places that give small portions, the more you support the smaller portions over the years they will give.

Google
Famous chicken burrito past it's prime. So little meat, almost no taste. Get tacos instead so you can taste the meat?

Yelp
The carne asada super burrito was hot and good. The beer was cold and the outside patio seating was convenient. The cashier was nice and the employees were friendly and smiled back. I've been going here for 20 years and it's still good.

Yelp
Haven't been year in over 8 years so was excited to try it again. The good: - Cashier was a young guy who spoke English which was so relieving as the language barrier at a lot of restaurants get my order wrong - food tasted pretty good, although I didn't want veggies in my burrito I still ate it and enjoyed it although there was an overload of them. - food came out extremely quick too The bad: - flys fly's fly's, I get it, it's hard not to get them in when your doors are constantly opening but they were pretty bothersome and kept randomly flying on my leg lol - lack of juice options, unfortunately no agua frescas and only horchata here - they didn't give me a bag of chips for my takeout order which most taquerias naturally do with your order Service is a 10/10, cashier was a great guy Food just didn't have that "WOW" factor and was just something I wanted to give a shot. Cool spot to stop by if you want to try something new but don't think I'd go out of my way to come back despite the great service.

Patricia Q.

Yelp
I've come here over the years pretty much order the same thing, a regular carnitas burrito with refried beans and rice. The recession must be hitting hard. I was a third way through and no meat was insight. So I open the burrito and the pork was literally all the soft fat with a little bit of meat attached to it. So discussed, I just threw an $11 dollar burrito away. I won't be returning. Quality of food has gone down.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
My burrito was stone cold. Nothing in it appears to have been in a chaffing dish or reheated on the grill. Just awful.

Greg E.

Yelp
DO NOT EAT HERE. This used to be my go to in San Mateo for Mexican food but on my last two visits (ordering a burrito and nachos): Dirty restaurant with lots of bugs. Tasteless food with what seemed to be low quality ingredients and served at room temp or even colder.
google avatar

Denise W.

Yelp
We've come here for years. First from Alameda to San Mateo. Then again from Fremont to San Mateo. The food had been GREAT. I don't know what happened. New ownership? I don't know. We went there again tonight after about 10 months. It was all bad. We ordered 2 burritos with the spinach tortilla. 1 with extra chicken. We ordered 1 12 ounce cucumber salsa. They didn't give use that. The burrito was.....well, like a cheeseburger. Whoever rolled the burrito into the foil, did a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE job. We decided to try Taqueria La Cumberland again after eating here 8 months ago and the rice inside the burrito was like pebbles inside a fish tank. We will never ever travel outside of our city to come here again. So,done!

Yelp
$3.65 per taco. 3.38 Oz per. Flavors are off. Couldn't really put my finger on it. They also served their street tacos with beans which we declined and the tortillas were under cooked. For a place that has been in downtown San Mateo for so long, we expected better. Maybe it's the parking lot that keeps the around...? Two others and I decided to embark on a taco trot through downtown San Mateo's taquerias to uncover the pinnacle of street taco perfection. We only judged the tacos and not any other amenities of the taqueria. We ventured from one taqueria to the next, leaving no stone unturned to find the ultimate street-style taco. Each of us had a distinct mission: one to evaluate carne asada, myself al pastor, and the third pollo tacos. Our rating system spanned meat, salsa, tortilla, overall quality, and value. We sampled our way through all nine downtown taquerias (excluding food trucks, grocery stores, and pupuserias). After tallying the scores, we reached a unanimous consensus on the top four contenders. These taquerias stood out for their commitment to delivering unparalleled street tacos. These are the only places in downtown to which we'd return: Charlie's, Los Primos #1, Al Vapor Nueva Italia, and Pancho Villa.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
This place has declined quite a bit in recent years. Took forever to get my food even though there were only 2 other people in the restaurant. No more salsa bar; now they even charge for chips. With a handful of other taquerias downtown that charge the same prices and offer better service and better hospitality, it's no longer worth it to come here.

Yelp
I was excited to be get a burrito from California. I used to live here, and I'm very familiar with how good the Mexican food is. However, this place was not terrific. It looks better than it tastes. I had a very basic burrito and beer and it cost $16. You order at the counter and there are some tables available to eat in. The only thing extra you get is salsa. The chicken was dry and the burrito was mostly rice. The burrito is not grilled, but the tortilla is steamed. The spicy salsa was not very spicy at all. I think they very much cater to the gringo clientele and palate. Service is fine. You order and it is an assembly line. You are given a number and they shout it out in a couple of minutes. It is an open air restaurant so you would not be comfortable on a cold day. He ambience is pretty sterile. I didn't even hear any music playing. The staff wasn't particularly friendly, but not rude. They just make your food and pop it on the counter. There are so many excellent restaurants in this area that I would not return to this one.

Yelp
The best in the neighborhood. Great ambience, food and service are both exceptional.

Yelp
Lesson Learned: When ordering delivery, check Yelp FIRST! The delivery apps have very skewed reviews. Thinking that it's pretty hard to mess up carne asada fries, thought I'd give this place a try. Thank me for taking the bullet for you! First thing you wonder is: WHAT KIND OF MEAT IS THAT??? It's not a ground up as some places, but it's still questionable. The cheese is the liquid chemical nuclear fake nacho kind. Guac was dollopped ever so sparingly. Fries were the frozen variety...and not even cooked long enough for any sort of crisp. But the most glaring thing wrong was the container was the segmented one -- you know...the one for two sides and a main. When you pile on an order of carne asada fries on top of this thing, it's totally deceiving as the separators lift the dish up to make it look like much more than it is -- saving the restaurant at least 35% in volume. Sneaky!

Bianca J.

Yelp
Worst burrito ever. We ordered delivery and my burrito didn't have any salsa even though we ordered it. My husband's burrito came with pico de gallo even though he specified that he did not want pico de gallo. Look at my burrito. When I opened it there were refried beans all over the foil paper it was disgusting. The burrito was loose from both ends and the tortilla was cracked and stale. It looked like there was a finger hole in my tortilla from someone wrapping it horribly. I had to use a fork to eat it and even then the beans were so salty and the rice was dry. We ordered chips and salsa and again specified no pico de gallo and received two cups full. Clearly no care to their customers preferences or to their food in general. I am so disappointed.

Yelp
This is a solid taqueria and I'm not just saying that because I've been eating their food my entire life. It's consistently tasty and the service is efficient. I love their salsas (especially the creamy orange salsa) and sitting on the patio on sunny days. My favorite lunch is a deluxe veggie taco with chips and salsa. The best part is that they put a little bit of cheese in between the two corn tortillas--it's like a taco on top of a mini quesadilla! Did I mention that La Cumbre's tacos come with free parking in downtown San Mateo? I miss their pre-Covid salsa bar but I have no complaints beyond that.

Alexis G.

Yelp
empty parking lot. tried to park there for only 5mins. I even offered to buy an item and they said I still couldn't park there. they literally had an empty parking lot and 1 consumer. I was doing them a favor but alright. I can see why you have no customers at lunch time. rude people.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
I used to go here on a regular basis 2-3 times a week for lunch. the last three times I've been here and I've ordered a burrito. the vegetarian. It sort of starts off with an aftertaste of fish. today I got one and the fish taste was so strong I could not finish the burrito. Two bites and I threw it away. I don't know if you're storing the ingredients in the same walk-in as the fish and not covering it. or maybe the refried beans are being cooked in the same pot that you cook fish in. but it's odd that a vegetarian burrito has a faint fishy taste to it. it's not a good combination. and they charge you for the chips and salsa, most places you get the chips for free.
google avatar

Josh J.

Yelp
Left feeling ripped off and unsatisfied. I paid $17.58 for a carne asada burrito (tip included) mostly filled with rice and beans. The place has three digital menus, with apparently incorrect pricing. After ordering, I realized my burrito came out to nearly $4 more than the price on the menu. I see a photo from a year ago here on Yelp which matched the prices I was seeing today. How hard is it to update a digital menu? Customers deserve to know what they are paying before ordering. Not to mention I was up charged $2 for Steak, with no mention of such on the menu. The burrito includes meat, so why is it more to choose steak, which didn't even taste premium. Anyway, I won't be back, and normally don't leave reviews but would rather save you a visit if you're reading this. Check out the receipt attached as proof

Scott M.

Yelp
Really good food, best burritos in town, Ed and his crew always do a great job. I don't get burritos anywhere else in San Mateo, and they also have a San Francisco location as well!
google avatar

Jess S.

Yelp
If I could give this place a 3.5 I would. This place, especially given its proximity to other taquerias, reads like the kind of place that I think of as more white washed, except this place felt like an El Torito/sit down Mexican on the outside and a cleaner taqueria on the inside. The carne asada was a solid 5 and I think in terms of burrito flavor - I got the steak fajita burrito and added on the super - it was pretty tasty. The veggies had a nice garlicky kick to them which is kind of what I'd come back for. But my burrito was super soggy and messy from the first bite to the last. Like, get a plate so you don't drip everywhere messy. You want real Mexican? Go a few doors down. Will I be back to try their enchiladas? Absolutely. Will definitely be back when I'm feeling healthy but still want a burrito - I don't think all the stuff with the fajita veggies makes it healthy but it at least makes me feel healthier lol.

Steve H.

Yelp
Everything was as great as I remember. Had been way too long since I had been back owing to moving back east.
google avatar

Lia K.

Yelp
The service is horrible. I don't know what happened to this place. We paid $1 for sour cream on the burrito, and there was no sour cream, so when we told them they said that the burrito had sour cream and we have to pay $5 for a 4oz container. Even though we already paid for the sour cream. Also, for another burrito we said beans on the side, but the beans were in the burrito. This happens 9/10 times now. I don't know if it's because of the pandemic or what, but I will no longer come here since my order is wrong almost every time, and when I ask them to fix it there is a problem. Sucks because this place used to be really good. Also they keep the doors open and it's freezing inside, so it doesn't matter if you sit inside or outside you'll freeze either way.
google avatar

Gene D.

Yelp
This location is very much different than the one on Valencia Street. If you have to come here, take your meal to go. While the outside is nice and inviting, the interior is a big disappointment. It is a bit run down and messy looking. With regard to the food, everything we ordered was just ok. My carnitas super burrito was supposed to contain their hot salsa. I could not discern any kind of "kick", etc. The meat was good tasting but all I could remember was the lettuce from a texture standpoint. In retrospect, I should have driven a bit closer to home and gone to my standby taqueria off Rengstorff Avenue.

Yelp
Yeah the service here is horrible. I arrived at 11am, which is the time they say they open. I was about to walk in to place an order and a lady stopped me to say "not open" while she was dragging out a table. I get it, they were still setting up the outdoor seating, but the food must be ready, right? I waited about 7 more min while I watched her drag out more chairs and tables. I said, what time do you open? She said "give me a sec" while she continued to drag out furniture. I gave her a couple more min and was ready to walk down the street to order from somewhere else when I saw an older lady inside waving at me from behind the counter. I placed my order. I ordered 3 burritos and the tortilla on mine was so dry and cold. The meat was so skimpy and the regular burrito looked about the same size as the super burritos. And the super burrito was $14! So overpriced, poor service, not tasty. This place used to be good but now it's like no one cares for their reputation or quality.

Susan F.

Yelp
I ordered a garlic shrimp and burrito with light refried beans and cheese. I got a garlic and shrimp burrito with black beans and lettuce. Omg! The burrito was lovely, with black beans, lettuce and cheese. My co-worker shared it, and loved it. I never thought I would love a black bean, but it was excellent! Mistakes make customers. Excellent. Thank you.

Oliver F.

Yelp
The quesadilla was shaped like a burrito, not flat triangles with cheese. They argued that it was correct.
google avatar

Michele C.

Yelp
when you get to San Mateo station this building stands out, with its historical look from the outside and the mural on it. It looks like a small mission, and even has a sign saying it's the birthplace of the mission style burrito. inside is a bit less impressive--almost like a storage closet, with a counter, menus and some seating, although the outdoor seating predominates., although it have some traditional Mexican paper cutouts.I ordered the steak and shrimp fajita burrito. they asked if I wanted mild or hot sauce, and I said hot. I guess they misheard me because my burrito only had steak--no shrimp. Oh well, both are the same price. there were lots of cooked vegetables like squash and onions in it. It most certainly was not "hot" even though that was correctly designated on my receipt. there was a choice of black beans, pinto beans or refried--I got pinto. there was also rice in it. the size of the burrito was quite ample, but I wouldn't call it spicy. good balanced meal though. '

Yelp
If I could give a zero review I would. This place is horrible, service and food no bueno. It's like the twilight zone with no fresh food at all. For Mexican food in this area look somewhere else. I told the lady after the first bite and she said sorry I can't do anything about it. The owners choice not yours. I left food and walked away to never return to this place.
google avatar

Sabrina C.

Yelp
La Cumbre is a San Mateo tradition. THE Go-to Place for delicious Mexican food. I love the burritos and tacos. The salsas are fresh and excellent. Highly recommend!
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
I always buy the refried beans from La Cumbre by the pint. These last few times I bought them I noticed little tiny black chard bits & the distinct burnt bean flavor. I have not complained about this, but this last batch we just could not tolerate the burnt taste. I'd like to suggest you toss the beans if they burn. I know they can easily burn if they left unattended or are not stirred often. It's cheaper to toss them than loose customers. My hope is that Carmen reads this and takes care of the issue because I really love to patronize La Cumbre!
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
Years ago La Cumbre had the best steak burritos . Today they are still pretty good but not as good as they were. The steak is funkier, all chopped up into tiny bits and they serve a lot smaller steak portions. The price on wall menu for the steak burrito today reads $9.75, but I was charged $11.50. I said, why $11.50? The price is clearly $9.75 on your menu. Response: We raised it. New price is 11.50. I said, well you should change the menu or charge the price you advertise. The girl didn't seem to understand or care that a business should honor their pricing. Avoid this place, better steak burritos elsewhere with honest pricing.
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
Eww! What happened to the quality of meat??? Next time you order your burrito, taco, nachos, or plate that includes carne asada, take notice of the abnormal color and texture of the steak because it's not the same as it used to be. I ordered a steak and prawn burrito with a side of steak (Carne Asada). Inside the burrito, it's harder to notice a difference because it's mixed in with other stuff, but when you order a side of the meat you can see that the meat color is a pale gray, very thin, and doesn't have a grain like a normal Carne Asada should have. Carne asada should never be that color, nor does it have that texture. With celebrities, especially Bill Gates, wanting to force his fake meat agenda and all the conspiracy theories that are circling around, I can't help but to wonder what if they've already started to swap the meat out? To further my suspicions, when I attempted to give my dog some of the carne asada from La Cumbre, he refused to eat it. What dog refuses to eat meat?! What kind of meat, if it's even real meat, are restaurants and suppliers feeding us?! Pay attention!!! I'm not joking about the quality of meat and I've already notified the health department and the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline, and you can too at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) or report the complaint online.

Yelp
This place used to be the best. We were regulars for years. But the quality, the help, and the place itself has gone drastically downhill. It looks like a dive and the help is unfriendly and incompetent. If I had a quarter for every time I've paid $1.50 for guacamole and not received it , I could retire in Hillsborough. Even when I've ordered items that come with guacamole and/or sour cream, when I get it home - they haven't added it! I shouldn't have to watch them like hawks while they prepare my order to make sure they've made it correctly. It is so disappointing to see this place decline so badly. I wish the management took pride in their establishment like they used to, but for some reason they have let it go down. Such a shame.
google avatar

Kiana C.

Yelp
Love coming here! got a deluxe chicken burrito because they were voted best chicken burrito, and it definitely was one of the best i've had! Brought my friend from out of town here and she also agreed :) Will definitely keep coming back whenever i can
google avatar

Rye S.

Yelp
Grossly overpriced. After all their years put into becoming one of downtown San Mateo's staple burrito places, an undeniable landmark. Today it was a personal upset. Lacking in quality with: menu items, flavors, spice levels, size of menu items. Including the absence of their salsa bar to accompany the chips you have to buy with everything else. Bummer.

Spencer C.

Yelp
I have not been to La Cumbre for quite awhile. Went last evening and was very disappointed in the taste and quality of my regular chicken burrito. Not good. Nothing like before. The chicken was so-so, hardly any salsa, the black beans were okay and the wrap was very poor. Maybe they have had a change of ownership.

karen o.

Yelp
Terrible place , - didn't fill my taco with meat -I asked for lengua and they gave me pastor -the tacos should be served in a plate -some of the employees had an attitude as if we were bothering them with our presence -
google avatar

Rocky R.

Yelp
We came out here for a Mexican lunch fix in mid day on a weekday so no one was there. I have been here long ago and I must say the food was much better back then and not so much anymore. I ordered the steak tacos (2) $11.00 and a Grilled Chicken Plate/Pollo Asado- $14.75 and a Corona- $5.50. The steak tacos are more like boiled steak, not the traditional grilled steak that I love and are essential for a good carne asada taco. It came with pinto beans and pico de gallo on corn tortillas. Not great but not good either. Served with sour cream and guacamole. The Grilled Chicken Plate, chicken is cold, served with rice and tortillas. Really not so good. Not a fan and service is non existent. It's self service all the way. Recommend La Taqueria in San Francisco's Mission District, it is crowded there for a very good reason, the food is fantastic and the meat is grilled.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
My husband and I traveled down to the Bay Area for the weekend. Our first stop was this taqueria. We walked in to order something to eat the service was terrible. We needed to use the restroom and were there to eat the woman told us the bathroom was only for customers WELL WE WERE THERE TO EAT. WE ARE CUSTOMERS! Once the key was handed to my husband The 3 women that were there were speaking in Spanish not knowing we spoke Spanish speaking very badly about US. We said nothing and ordered. Upon receiving out food it was cold, thrown together and not edible. We ended up leaving still hungry and paid for food we did not consume. We will never return
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
The food was just ok. We ate at the restaurant and the food wasn't very warm. The nachos looked like cheese soup with toppings- not even real cheese! The burrito was lukewarm in the middle and the meat was dry. Won't be back for another "original mission burrito" anytime soon.
google avatar

Mariam T.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for years because of their grilled chicken burrito. Probably the best chicken burrito in the Bay. I'm giving a 1 star rating because the service is awful. It's so bad that even the burrito can't save this rating. I called in to order some burritos for pick up, and was greeted by a very rude worker. She took my order and had an attitude the entire time. As she was done, I asked if she would need my card info, so that I could pay beforehand. She replied with "Oh no we can't do that." I asked why not, and she didn't give a straight answer. That was whatever, it didn't bother me. What did though was when I asked her for my total. She said "I can't give you your total because I wrote it down." I replied, "Okay. I could wait for you to calculate it and provide it for me." She let out the BIGGEST SIGH and placed me on hold. She then came back and gave me my total. Totally dissatisfied with her service, I asked her for her name in case of any discrepancies with my order. She asked "Why do I need to give you my name?" I told her, "In case there's issues with my order, we'd know who took it." She then told me, "I don't need to give you my name." I was in disbelief. I never heard of a public restaurant where employees don't have name tags, or don't provide their name to their paying customer. I then asked for the manager. The manager came on the phone, and I explained the situation to him, and instead of him trying to compromise or apologize for his workers lack of common courtesy, he saw nothing wrong, and even agreed to her not providing me with her name. He then gave me his name, which is Albert or Alberto. He then brought up how he got a PhD from a university for some weird reason and then asked me for what degree I have. Like dude, I just want my burritos, I want the name of the girl that took my order, and I want to make sure she gets a proper warning/meeting/training with whoever is in charge for her crappy customer service. Definitely the worst experience ever the grilled chicken burritos are good though haha.

Fiona L.

Yelp
When I first was introduce to La Cumbre the burritos were amazing, flavorful and filled with meat. I was a frequent customer at the SF location. I went to San Mateo location a few times, the burritos were still amazing. I recently ordered the meat burrito last week and it barely had any meat in it. The taste was off and the burrito was bland. Couldn't taste the chicken since there was barely anything in the burrito. The quality of the burrito isn't the same.
google avatar

Shay I.

Yelp
If you are looking for terrible customer service (three women behind the counter were rude, busy eating their own food and talking without even attempting to make mine) then this is the place for you! If that doesn't sell it, they are also really good at putting chicken in your burrito still connected to its cartilage. See the great pic below. It was disgusting. Go anywhere else.
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
So, I need to update my previous review , and maybe apologize to La Cumbre. I was really bummed about some of the changes, when we first returned to La Cumbre after not having been there for a while. But, 6 of my friends have called me out for having given them a 3 star "complaint fllled" review, and how it conflicts with the fact that I'm constantly checking in on Facebook and bragging about how good my burrito is. Here's the thing, their prices have gone up, but so has the price of EVERYTHING. Gas, movies, babysitters, water, electricity. It's not 1998 anymore, so I guess I forgive them for raising their prices. I'm definitely paying for high quality, and I'm cool with it. I still hate that the chips aren't as good as they used to be, and that they charge us 50 cents for a bag of chips when our order was over 90.00. Cmon! Throw in a bag of chips to humor me. But here's why I'm back to say why they're still my favorite: They have the best meat! Seasoned and grilled to perfection. Always fresh, always delicious. I love tacos and burritos almost as much as I love my family, and many places are serving up beef flavored rubber or fatty chicken extras. My picky little underweight mouse of a kid always asks for a large side of grilled chicken to devour with a fork because it is that good! We've tried so many places and La Cumbre still comes in as our favorite. I'm there at least twice a month (despite the fact that we moved to Pleasanton 13 years ago) and they definitely deserve 4 stars. Lastly, I will say that I've never had a diet go sideways, or felt disgusting after a trek to my favorite burrito spot. The food is fresh, delicious, and healthy. But- if you are indulging, I highly recommend some cool, sweet, horchata. Muchas Gracias La Cumbre. Hasta!

Yelp
This may look like a grungy spot from the outside, but wait until you sample the flavors that Taqueria La Cumbre has to offer! You've got all your classic meat options, but a bunch of vegan options as well. La Cumbre claims to be the "Birthplace of the Mission Burrito," and though I'm not sure how valid that statement is, their burritos are definitely good! The "deluxe" comes with rice, beans, salsa, melted cheese (quesadilla style), guacamole, and sour cream, and I ordered one with chicken in salsa, which was tender and moist. Every bite was simply enveloped with layers of flavor--ooey, gooey, salty, sweet, and sour! We also got the garlic butter shrimp taco salad, a bright mixture of lettuce topped with sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes, jicama, cucumbers, and more. Everything was dressed nicely and was served in a flaky, crispy taco bowl! Oh, did I mention the salsa bar? You can help yourself to all manners of pickled veggies, cilantro, onion, corn, and freshly-made salsas, including a unique tropical pineapple salsa. This place can get popular during meal times, and for good reason, given the value you get for the menu prices--my only gripe is that on my visit, they actually didn't have available a few items I wanted to order, but what we did get was simply delicious!

Yelp
This was our go-to spot when we used to live in San Mateo. The carnitas burrito is awesome. Staff is attentive and quick, and they even recognized us after a while. One of our favorite burritos on the peninsula (not pictured because we eat them too fast).

Yelp
The food really was lacking any flavor. Steak tasted like zero seasoning was used. Super burrito had barely any cheese. Asked for extra salsa and could barely taste any. No onions or cilantro. Just a very odd tasting burrito.

Yelp
I lived in the mission in SF and grew up in TX If I want a burrito in San Mateo, this is the spot. It's great and close to the Caltrain stop. Fair price for really good food.

Yelp
NOT Vegan friendly. I have been eating here almost every weekend for 20+ years. I had a lot of loyalty to La Cumbre. And as I started to shift to a more vegan diet, I was delighted that they offered vegan options. However, the staff have been confused for years about what "vegan" means. At least 4-5 times in the last two years I've received a vegan burrito that had cheese or sour cream in it. The staff is always nice about replacing the burrito when I point it out, but it is a bit of a crapshoot. And then today I ordered a vegan petite burrito. It was even labeled "vegan" on the foil. But it was a chicken burrito. Not just one or two pieces either - grilled chicken pieces were mixed into it throughout. I'm sorry but this is too much. I liked you, La Cumbre, but you've let me down too many times. I will not be ordering from you any more.

Yelp
Don't waste your time, appetite and money here. The single $ is a lie. This was the most expensive burrito I've ever ordered. It was small and dry too. Prawn with garlic Carne asada, no guacamole... Dry AF. DID I MENTION EXPENSIVE AF? It's just nice on the outside. Service was slow even though it wasn't busy. So amped about my disappointment and dissatisfaction that I had to post this review ASAP.

Yelp
Service sucks. Food is terrible. No flavor and $5 for a small taco! Cheap meat! The cashier no gloves! Why? The food prepare no gloves! The cashier was making food and handling money. You want us to support small business, how about being courteous to your customers!
