The 30 Best Restaurants in Guadalajara, Mexico - Eater

"Born in Mexico City and trained in Buenos Aires, chef Tomás Bermúdez brought an international flair to his popular seafood concept when he opened in 2012. La Docena — inspired by the brassy oyster bars of New Orleans — showcases oysters from Baja California and Nayarit as well as clams and shrimp from the Gulf of California. Alongside fresh Mexican shellfish, there are Peruvian-inspired ceviches, king crab, grilled oysters Rockefeller, smoky aguachiles tatemados, and shrimp po’boys, all of which go well with local craft beer or a house michelada festooned with cooked shrimp. [$$]" - Bill Esparza

Google
Hands down the best casual upscale seafood restaurant In Guadalajara both locations are great. I prefer the original location but both met my expectations, the only thing I did not like was the cannot accommodate classic cocktails other than that Wonderful experience always.

AO “Fine diner”

Google
Really slow service, the waiter got my order wrong and while we waited for the second course which took a long time, asked about the dish and he said that wasn’t what I ordered and he was really rude about it, I ended up paying for a steak when I wanted a Pepito and on top of that they charged me for the bread! Is really noisy and the wine by the glass is really a small portion. The desserts are overly sweet and extremely small.

First came here 2 years ago for a table of 4, but on this occasion was a table of 9 & wait time was 30 minutes on a Saturday later afternoon! Super busy & super noisey! As for the food 😋 was not disappointed 😋 Staff were efficient & friendly. Price per head worked out to about $58 pp.

Seafood, especially fresh shellfish, is really really good. The ambiance and atmosphere are great, seems like everyone it’s having a good time. The only thing that is preventing a 5 star rating is the organizing. Our main dishes came out late, the waiters and staff were confused about where to deliver the food, our appetizers were left at another table and it took us 2 hours to just get “quick” lunch. But, if you have the time, this place is a good choice. Just, be patient.

The restaurant is located in the business area of Guadalajara, Andares, they are priced to match the environment , the experience is superb and service excellent. That is why they are always busy and people prefer to eat here over other restaurants in the area. Recommend the location when you have an expense account or taking clients out for dinner. Excellent and fresh seafood as: red snappers, oysters, baby calamari, scallops, octopus, tuna. I recommend you the selection of 12 oysters where you can taste different varieties of it.

Best oysters I have ever had. Amazing bar Gets busy very fast. Had to wait 15 minutes for a table, but still worth the wait. Bear in mind it was a Saturday afternoon. Still best seafood and great drinks. Service was amazing.

Google
Fantastic food, and some of the best oysters you can get. The place was very busy, a lot of people were eating in the outdoor patio area. Even with how busy it was. the customer service was top notch. They were quick at attending you, taking your order, and delivering your meal. I highly recommend trying the dulce de leech volcano. Super tasty.

The service provided at this establishment is very poor when compared to the service provided at similar restaurants in the US. The waiters are slow and inattentive. I believe it is a cultural thing, Mexicans are not service oriented generally speaking, there are some places where service is great, but not here. The hostesses are rude with an entitled attitude, arrogant as if they are doing you a favor. They are very classist, they can deny you service if you don’t meet a certain appearance or look. You must look European or American (white) to get service. I am not sure why, but I am assuming if you look too Mexican, dark colored, they may think you have no money to pay, as the restaurant is expensive for Mexican standards, who knows. Other than that the drinks and the food are very good. Every time I go to Guadalajara, I like to eat there, the oysters, the fish, and the meats are high quality and delicious taste. I must say, the hostesses are all young and beautiful, they have the European look, that could explain their attitude, they may think their job is beneath them, other than that, the restaurant is great.

Yelp
Last-minute decision to visit Guadalajara for a few days. First time here. This restaurant was five minutes walking from the and was recommended by the woman that checked us in. Fantastic choice! Restaurant was full at lunchtime, although we were seated properly without a reservation. Not outside, but had an outdoor feel. Extensive seafood menu, heavily oriented toward fresh oysters, clams, and other amazing seafood, which was all presented in a fantastic manner and delicious. Anyone that thinks this place was pricey or not a winner must've had a bad experience that would've been out of the ordinary in my opinion. It's not cheap to be sure, but it was not expensive. In my opinion great quality and nice. Nice portions. We had two primary servers who are pictured in this review. Ignacio and Lalo - incredibly friendly and obviously wanted us to enjoy our meal. Made excellent recommendations definitely added to the wonderful late lunch experience. We travel a lot, and this is clearly some of the best seafood/oysters we've had in a long time.

Yelp
We came here in Andares for a "little snack". We ordered a few cocktails, one of the being with Jamaica (AMAZING!!), and some jamón serrano with pan con tomate...a staple in Spain. The vibe was definitely kool. They have an oyster bar as well so this spot is very popular amongst the locals in andares. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Awesome dinner with work associates, the calamari was excellent, the garspachio soup was superb the steaks were well prepared. Even with the language barrier the staff was very friendly and helpful. We sat at the oyster bar as the tables were packed, great spot for people watching.

Yelp
Ive been coming here throughout the years. However this last weekend my friends said they've heard about people getting sick. I ordered the "ostiones roquefeller" and "aguachile tatemado". It wasn't even 30 minutes after eating the oysters that the only 2 people that ate oysters, myself and my friends got up and could not stop throwing up in their bathroom. Once the bill came we mentioned this to the captain of waiters of the restaurant and he just said "that's weird, everything is always fresh here". No empathy towards myself that could not leave their bathroom and got food poisoning from their food. I am never coming back and do not recommend anyone going there. After a small research with my close friends, this is common

Yelp
I'm not sure about you, but I love talking about my latest find. And if you're ever in GDL aka The Land of Tapatios, you gotta carve out some time to have a trendy, delicious meal among beautiful people. Because, after all, you are all of those things, especially DELICIOUS. Yep, I talked to your ex. Okay, now onto the restaurant. For one thing, if you're in a hurry, hit up a taco stand, cuz if you come here, you gon' hafta wait yo' turn. I'm talking ramen line out the dang door. But ain't no door here, but you can grab a seat and tiny table near the hostess stand and order drinks while you wait out the :30-60 min wait ya got comin', but believe me, it'll be worth it. As me and my party waited, I noticed the servers bringing some delicious looking grilled octopus over a bed of crispy yam chips on wooden boards. Oh yes, I'm not even sure my party wanted octopus, but I sure did. Noted. I sipped on my minty fresh mojito as my friends guzzled their buttery Chardonnay nays, and ice cold brewskis. We took in the nice weather and felt that this upscale place was definitely a breath of fresh air. As we were seated, we were sure to close out with our bar tab and settled into our table. I did the honors and ordered the following: 1. that bomb ass grilled octopus 2. grilled vegetables 3. cheese round with fresh tomato topping 4. some chicken or fish skewer 5. a dozen Kumamoto oysters 6. a dozen Chocolata clams It is rare that I can say we loved it all, but truly we did. The service was terrific, the ambiance was fabulous, my friends (of course), as you are too TOP NOTCH, and the food was fresh and delightful. The only thing I regret was NOT dressing up and NOT wearing dangerous high heels as I strutted through Andares in dark sunglasses and 3 coats of lip gloss.

Yelp
So delicious! I just have the best ostras so fresh and good! And drink is delicious too. I really recommend this place if you are looking for a nice and relaxing place to have a good meal!

Yelp
Bad service. Oyesters were good. Impossible to have a conversation there. Drinks were decent.

Yelp
One of the best oysters in Mexico! The food is so fresh and so delicious! Has tons of flavor! I haven't found a restaurant like this back in the states! The place is really clean and also has great customer service. The food came out quickly for how busy the restaurant was. If you happen to visit Guadalajara Mexico, you should try this place out. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This place is amazing, the food is the best. They serve the best fresh clams and oysters on a half shell and the fish is awesome...can't rave enough on hoe great, good quality the food is.
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
Mostly outdoor seatings at Andares so you would have to endure smokes if you're sitting in the area. The seafoods are so fresh and especially with the limitless options of oysters. Arrachera steak is also superb. Great for surf and turf meals.

Yelp
One of my favorite places that I have been to thus far in Guadalajara. The hour wait on a Wednesday night was absolutely worth it by getting the shrimp, penguinos (which is a sangria like spritzer brought to you in a penguin cup) [they have the options of red, white and blush], and ceviche. They started us off with some shrimp and salsa and crackers. They got us seconds as well, and then we ordered the shrimp and ceviche. The ceviche was an absolute delight as it's zesty flavor was to die for. While the shrimp was cooked to perfection and was very delicious. Lastly we ordered the rico volcán dulce de leche and it was basically a cake with caramel filling that exploded delicious caramel on its side the second you open it. Lastly I did notice the environment was very male dominated and perhaps business men as they were dressed super fancy. Some Played poker, Others smoked, and others were just drinking. If you can tolerate that then it's definitely worth a night out here.

David G.

Yelp
One of the best seafood joints in all of Mexico. Everything was perfect. We had the ceviche, aguachile and oysters. All were amazing

Yelp
I am start by saying what a great service we had. Three waiters were around us and changed our plates when needed. The food was phenomenal I liked the fish it was so juicy and top it with cilantro and onions. Aguachile was great and the 1/2 kilo of shrimp amazing. On another I found out they have another hidden Restaurant in the back that needs a reservation unfortunately we did not and too late to make one for us. Restaurant name is Juniko which is also dozen in Japanese and you eat what the chef prepare I will make sure to make reservation next time in town

Yelp
Great food. Long wait but worth it. The large grilled fish is worth it. Try the Agua Chile. Prawns as well. All the food was generally great!

Yelp
I stopped by La Docena for a small bite and a beer. I was craving some aguachiles de camarón and La Docena delivered! I have to say I found the service to be excellent and the manager Carlos was very attentive. The aguachile was the best I've had because the salsa was so fresh and made with herbs right from their indoor garden. The music was soothing and the ambience was great. I highly recommend La Docena for good food and drinks.

Yelp
Food - Incredible!! Service - Exceptional Beer - Cold So we ate here for lunch and nothing was bad. Servers swapped out dirty plates for clean ones every few minutes. The shrimp, mollejas, oysters, sandwiches, Aguachiles and everything else that hit the table was exceptional.

Yelp
Wow, wow & WOW.. visiting from California and saw pictures but boy was I glad we walked in.. Ordered the grilled prawns, agua Chile which they muddled grilled Chile peppers and tomatoes into the sauce, Peruvian Ceviche, hamburger wiand to finish off our meal, we ordered the lava banana cake. AMAZING.. I highly recommend this place

Danny H.

Yelp
Worst restaurant experience ever. I ordered po boy sandwich with shrimp they proceeded to tel me that they didn't have shrimp after they served others at my table. So I ordered a oyster salad that took another 20mins that came out with disgusting burnt oyster which I didn't eat and still got charged. By far the worst restaurant I been to.
google avatar

Travis P.

Yelp
I've been here twice now... both times we needed up eating nothing but the apps.... oyster after oyster and these tostada apps are amazing. Andares has the best restaurants and this one doesn't underperform... I highly recommend La Docena.. location, food, and drinks!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food at a great price. The area is safe and there is plenty to do. Great octopus over rissoto..highly recommended...

Yelp
I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. While being in town my friend raved about these so called "penguin" drinks which is basically a red or white wine-vodka concoction with sprite. I ordered the red wine and after one liter I was done. We shared two appetizers which was fried calamari that was accompanied by a delicious spicy chipotle dip and my favorite provolone pesto with grilled tomatoes with a side of fresh bread. La docena is definitely one of the best restaurants in Andares.

Yelp
I was here with family for dinner on April 1st 2017. Great setting, polite staff and somewhat tasty food. I ordered grilled shrimp and were served dry and glued on to their shells. I told two servers and neither seemed to care. The Poboy (sandwich) was tasty but tough on the pallet. I didn't want to cause a scene, but an explanation or sorry would have been nice. Tulio from San Francisco.

Yelp
-1 star because of the service. we were constantly chasing down our waitress after we had established that she was our waiter. we had about 3 different waiters at one point. this caused our table of 8 to be confused on if their order had already been taken or not. -1 star for the lack of creativity with the drinks. I ordered a mezcal Jamaica and it indeed was just mezcal and Jamaica. that should not be on the menu as a house cocktail- it's a lazy drink.

Yelp
Pretty happening place, and if you're into seafood one to try on the Andares shopping area. Raw oysters seemed fresh and sweet, though, I would stay away from the cooked Rockefeller oysters. The grilled octopus is popular for a reason- it's pretty awesome.

Yelp
Perfect spot for our last dinner in Mexico! Love this place because it's hip, food is fresh, people are sweet, wine is cold! Get the grilled oysters, Po boy made on special Guadalajara style bread and ribeye burger. Yum!

Crystal R.

Yelp
Waited over 2 hours and never got seated even though there was empty tables because they were for "bigger parties." It was just 2 of us and we kept getting told we were next and they just left us waiting so we just ended up leaving. Worse possible service. We wanted to try this place out for the first time because the food looked good but we will never be coming back to try it due to the service. My boyfriend works in the restaurant industry and he was beyond upset at how incompetent the employees were. We ended up going to Bariachi after we left and we were so happy we did, we had such an amazing experience there. If I could give zero stars for this place I would.

Yelp
Excellent for seafood lovers! Fresh, high quality food with great ambiance and friendly service. Must haves are the raw oysters, grilled oysters and ceviche Peruano!

Yelp
The best grilled octopus I had in Mexico. The place is trendy and open concept with delicious seafood and great drinks!

Yelp
I recently dined at this restaurant while traveling on business. It came as a recommendation by a client of mine. The reason he recommended it was because it was in a fun, vibrant part of town and it was casual and also known for it's great seafood. There are two sides to restaurant, one is the smoking side which looks onto the street and the other side is the non-smoking. It's fun to sit on either side although I prefer the non-smoking and you can people watch as you dine. The service was very good but at times a little frustrating since their interpretations of a salad are different than those in the US. They served a few pieces of kale with dressing and nothing else on it. They served a side dish of grilled beets and onions calling it a salad. It tasted good but if you have a green salad in mind you may want to check before ordering. The food was very good. I ordered the grilled octopus appetizer for the table and it was delicious. The gazpacho soup had great flavor but was unique in the way that it was a puree and not a chunky gazpacho. Even though the restaurant is known for it's seafood I was in the mood for steak and I ordered the Arrechera. It was cooked perfectly and tasted great. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who is in Guadalajara. It's a "happening" area of town and there are other restaurants and bars nearby.

David D.

Yelp
Great seafood option for a distinguished palate. Quality of the food was exceptional.
