I recently dined at La Familia in Abilene, and it was truly memorable. The pozole rojo was rich, flavorful, and easily the best I've had. The service was outstanding; the staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel like part of the family. Easily the best Mexican food I’ve had in Abilene.

Called in an order and the lady drive through was rude because the line was long. Barbacoa burrito was supper dry, tasted old like left overs and terribly seasoned tasted BLAND. I asked if they can add a bean and rice burrito for my 11 month old son, and she said no. Or at least a small side of beans and rice for my baby boy, and still said no. Would’ve took her 10 second to put it in a container, it’s already made!! Such ugly hospitality for a restaurant called “La Familia”. Looks like drive thru lady can’t handle orders. Said she can’t add a burrito because she’s too busy. Terrible customer service. And TERRIBLE DRY barbacoa. More upset about the customer service than the food. If you want good barbacoa, don’t come here. Go to La Mexicana. Menudo is bomb tho.

I always say, If you want to try tasty and family food, go to the tiny restaurants, those that since you open the door they treat you like one of their friends even if it's the first time walking in there. La Familia Restaurant is one of those places, it's a happy place, good service, great food, super clean and good deals.

Google
The food was good, but not great. Authentic and inexpensive. The quesadilla were pretty good while the chicken enchiladas were far from the best I have had. Good service that is fast and friendly. If you want a fast and inexpensive Mexican food option keep this one in mind. Two people was only $20 without tip for two meals and drinks.

Every time I go to this restaurant I am welcomed in the friendliest way! It is always busy and you are served quickly! NOW the food! I love it! Everything I have had is amazing I get breakfast burritos and posole every time! Also, the tamales are so good. I don’t live in Abilene anymore so it is a must when we visit and I bring it home! All the prices are fair.

I would not recommend this place for several reasons: The food is expensive if you consider that you are eating bag/ not fresh corn tortillas. The Nachos salsa is the same used for several dishes. I tried "Menudo," which tasted absolutely gross; I could see the fat floating on the plate. That is not menudo (they use the same broth for Pozole). Sad. I also tried a barbacoa "gordita". That was what saved my breakfast. Also tried eggs with cactus (Nopales con Huevo) and was not impressed. The coffee tasted as if it was made by the same dude who made the menudo. I usually give places two or three chances, but even the people with who I had breakfast agreed that their food was lame. I did not try the rice and beans; maybe they were the game changer, but they were not pleasing to the eye.

Google
Food was definitely good … the pozole de puerco was yummy , the menudo was tender and was Delish …the barbacoa tacos are the bomb …great friendly service … do recommend and will return if I’m in Abilene again

Yelp
What a treat! I had the fajitas quesadillas and my dad had the beef enchiladas. DELICIOUS!! If is a small place, the decor is cute, and the service was good. There were only two servers, the place was packed, and the service was slow. But it was well worth it wait. Be kind to the servers, they are trying their best!

Yelp
Service is always great ! Food is very delicious, I don't think that they have anything that is not good. It's a family atmosphere!

Yelp
Hands down, the best Mexican food in Abilene! The pozole rojo was the best I've had in Texas. The service was friendly - they definitely treat you like familia.

Yelp
Had a great meal at La Familia recently. I tried the Caldo de Rey soup and shrimp cocktail, which were flavorful and felt like genuine home cooking - like something from a grandma's recipe book. My brother enjoyed the posole just as much. The staff were friendly, and our waitress was really welcoming. For authentic Mexican food, this place is worth checking out!

Yelp
Again, eleven years since my last review. Shame on me! Since I had lunch here today, I feel it's my responsibility to inform you that this is the BEST hot sauce in town! It was my favorite 11 years ago, and the recipe has not changed. Glenda and I will buy a pint or quart to take home. It's that good! The same waitress always waits on me, and she told me she's been there 19 years. Wow! That's dedication! Anyway, great food and service. Throw a little business their way!

Yelp
All good. We liked it very much. The tamales are especially good!! Also love the rice & beans. Go at "off" times for best results finding a parking space and getting served.

Laynetta T.

Yelp
Food was so good!! Reminded me of my childhood! Grew up in imperial valley, ca so close to the border! No tex-mex! Very clean and smells great!

Yelp
Came to Abilene for a dr visit. Found La Familia on Apple Maps. When we walked in we weren't immediately greeted but after we found a table the waitress did acknowledge us and then came took our drink order. She did tell us breakfast was over at 11am and it was 10:50am. It's a little quaint restaurant. Seems like one waitress working. Really busy with customers coming in for lunch. Drive thru is busy and the phone rings a lot. I had a half sweet and half unsweetened tea in a to go cup( no refills on to go cups it's a new charge). I had the Huevos Rancheros with over medium eggs bacon and sausage. My wife had Chicharrón plate with a scrambled egg. Food came out really quick and very warm. I wouldn't say it was hot hot but it was really good. They do have their regulars whom they know by name which to me is a plus for the business. I would eat here again when in town.

Yelp
Came in and sat down for 15 minutes, no one came to take my order, not even to ask me what I wanted to drink, there's definitely no family vibe here. People that came after me got serviced, I guess because I am not a local. Got up and left, I don't think they even noticed.

Yelp
Everything is Moy Bueno here. Very good food. Staff treats you like famia. Authentic vibes all around. Menudo available daily. It's amazing.

Yelp
The breakfast tacos and burritos are excellent and I go here every time I visit Abilene!

Yelp
I've been going here forever and I must say they have some of the best Mexican food here in Abilene. We're not talking about Tex mex we are talking about true authentic Mexican food.

Johnny L.

Yelp
Ordered 2 types of breakfast burritos (chorizo and egg; and egg + beans + cheese). Not sure which one gave me the runs but I crapxxx my pants all the way to El Paso. The chorizo is like hamburger meat ...not much chorizo taste. It's important to know they charge you $.50 for tiny small container of the hot salsa. Not used to being charged for salsa. Won't be back ...my britches won't take it.
google avatar

Yelp
Had breakfast here for first time. Had a chorizo w egg burrito and tamales. The chorizo and egg burrito was not that good. Its not hard to make a good chorizo w egg burrito. The tamales were good made up for the burrito.

Yelp
I am torn on how to rate this... the service sucked but the food is amazing! So we got there and this is a seat yourself... but we stood there because we didnt know... we waited close to 5 minutes to recieve a waitress who came and got our drink orders then it was a 15 minute wait to give our food order. There was no service... we did not receive a ticket at the end of the meal you have to go to the cashier with the number that's on top of the napkin holder.

Yelp
Good food with a great price. Service is fast. Building needs a little TLC. But most of the time a restaurant that is a little mom and pop restaurant is good.

Paul D.

Yelp
Family run making real Mexican dishes family style! Courteous servers and staff. Definitely not new but very clean! Prices very competitive! Drive through, call in, inside sit down! Always busy! Open for breakfast and lun

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food, great prices, & wonderful service. We have been stopping through the drive thru for breakfast for 2+ years and are always greeted with a smile and great service. However, we went on a family lunch date here and I left in tears... tears of JOY! The people here treat you like family. I think every person working came over to our table to say hello to our two kiddos and make sure we were taken care of.. they even asked to hold my baby so I could eat baby free! It was so refreshing to be treated like family rather than a hassle cause we were a table with small children. This place is a huge blessing to our family and community!

Yelp
The food, service and prices were amazing! Will go back if the opportunity arises. Everyone was very hospitable and eager to provide input on food recommendations.

Yelp
got the lunch beef fajita plate. The meat was fantastic. The pick and guacamole were great compliments. Rice ok and the beans had a nice spice, but a bit too salty. They have lots of different dishes from breakfast , lunch, and dinner

Yelp
Great spot, we had a breakfast here while visiting town. It's busy on the weekend so be prepared for that. The menudo was thebomb.com

Yelp
Absolute the best Mexican food in town! It's authentic, and not Tex-Mex. Everything on the menu is great, but my favorites are the tacos de bistec, enchiladas, caldo, and posole. If you like Mexican food, this place is a must!!!
google avatar

NotAtDaTableLos ..

Yelp
Always great spot for authentic Mexican food, don't let the looks fool you the food is great. How many Mexican restaurants serve Menudo and Caldo daily. Come here regularly for the Menudo and my wife loves the Caldo, especially on those cold days.

Yelp
This place tastes good if not grate at times. I have been coming here for some time for breakfast tacos. And I'm starting to notice something with there tacos. There getting smaller. Much much smaller. The early I come in the smaller they are. I come in around 6:30 and there so small I can finish them in 3 bites. Where as before it was a full taco taking 4-6 bits. Topped off with all my ingredients. Talked with management about the problem and after a few days the sizes have returned to normal. A good response time in my eyes.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place during a drive between Dallas and Odessa, it was the closest place walking distance to where our car was getting a flat fixed. This is definitely a hole in the wall, modest place, this is good Mexican food. The reason for 5 stars is that the lady cleaning the tables, isn't just wiping them down, no this was a cleaning, chairs, tables, condiments all cleaned. This was definitely reassuring during the pandemic. They also had tables marked unavailable to comply with social distancing and capacity rates. We received good service and our family of three are for under $20. Again, this is no frills but good Mexican food. Def worth a lunch stop and a place to get drive through during the road trip.

Yelp
Homely family run mom and pop place. Authentic! Salsa is good! But even better ask for the Picosa sauce. Hot hot and v good. We loved their Carne Guisada plate as well as their Chilli Rilleno. My son ordered the Carne Asada plate. Think Mexican Alice marinated flat steak. Yum!

Yelp
I've eaten here several times. I try to stop when going through Abilene during breakfast time. Great burritos and sweets, fast service and inexpensive. A+ Stop here...you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

William L.

Yelp
It's good traditional Mexican food. It's a good alternative to the typical Tex-Mex that is served at most places.
google avatar

Amy R.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for breakfast tacos! I always order papas, chorizo, and cheese. Very yummy & inexpensive! They're quick and friendly. And the salsa is great!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Love this place! Good authentic Mexican food in a small whole in the wall. Good to go to for lunch as the service is quick too. The tamale plate is my fave. Good chips and salsa.
google avatar

T P.

Yelp
Definitely a family style restaurant. It takes a minute to get the food through the drive through, but that's how you know it's authentic and they are cooking as you order. The place is always pact but it the wait for food isn't so long that you dread going. It's still quick enough to get in and get out.
google avatar

Yelp
La Familia is sort of like the tent the Weasley's took to the Quidditch World Championships - much bigger inside than it looks outside. Family-style, everything seems to be homemade (I only asked specifically about the salsa, which was excellent!) I had cheese enchilada plate and it was very good. Chips were also great. If you haven't tried this place, you should. My only quibble - no queso :-(
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
The salsa is really fantastic! You can actually buy some to take home! They can make it hotter for you if you ask. The rest of the food is very good..get the Caldo De rey! It cures any hangover!
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
La Familia is one place I love to eat. They treat me special there. I always get an extra egg on my burrito, well not really, but its really good and everybody treats me like family. The prices are reasonable too.

Sarah M.

Yelp
Read a lot of glowing reviews, so thought we would give it a try on Wed. the 22nd. It appears to be quite clean and the staff were attentive and friendly. We both got #5 with one getting two beef and one cheese enchilada with rice and beans and the other getting one each of beef, chicken and cheese with no beans but requesting double rice instead. We also shared 6 tamales and one got guacamole. The cheese enchiladas had hardly anything in them, the beef were just okay and the chicken was pretty bad, tasting very off. The tamales were good and the guacamole was excellent and they give you a lot. We have never, ever, had so little sauce on enchiladas. Most places here have that stingy problem, except Miguel's. Even when you ask them to charge you for extra sauce, they won't put it on. Enchiladas need sauce and not just on the top and barely touching the plate, but enough for the food, even the skimpy way most enchiladas are made around here, including this place. Also, the one that asked for no beans but extra rice, not only didn't get the extra rice, but didn't even have as much as the one that got beans and rice. There was very little cheese on top either. Maybe we will try again in a month or so to see if anything changes, then we'll see from there.

Sammy S.

Yelp
This is a small family owned place. The building is old but dont let that fool you. The food is authentic and wonderful. I would say they need to invest in a neon open sign that passer bys can see that they are open.
