My wife and daughter and I had dinner last night in their outdoor dining tent, which was quite comfortable. We ordered our meals and then munched out on their delicious focaccia bread with red peppered oil (served complimentary).
My wife and I ordered the Chicken Frances (delicious: chicken is dredged in an egg batter) and when our meals arrived and I started cutting into the 'chicken' I noticed that it cut like veal, looked like veal and tasted like veal, so I assume... My wife had the same experience (though she just chowed it down). Both of our other pieces were chicken and were delicious.
I asked the waitress if she could please replace my one piece, which they did, quickly, and what I really liked is that they didn't just throw a new piece of chicken on a plate, but it came sauced, seasoned and with a slice of lemon, very appealing, and it was great!
All was good, a few minutes later I noticed a woman (I believe to be family) going table to table, asking everyone how they enjoyed their food and service. When she got to us, I didn't expect her being aware of our mishap, and I wasn't planning to mention since it was taken care of promptly and professionally, but she immediately and discreetly apologized and I said, no problem at all, everything was handled perfectly fine.
A few minutes later, the waitress arrived and said, as she cleared our plates, that they would like to buy us dessert for our troubles. Well, as I had said, there was no troubles, but, to be honest, I didn't mind the creme brulee served to us on the house!
So, the moral to this story, if you make a mistake, own it, and do what you can to turn it around. This minor mishap turned into a win/win/win, for us (let them eat creme brulee), for the restaurant (won us over, though we did already like the joint) and for our waitress, receiving a 34% tip!!
