Kansas City Tacos: A History of the Parmesan-Covered Fried Taco | Eater

"Opened as a post-retirement venture in 1972 and later relocated to larger Westside quarters, this family-run diner is known for menu riffs on Mexican favorites—most notably enduringly popular carnitas—and for keeping the local fried, Parmesan-finished taco tradition alive across generations now led by the founders’ daughters." - José R. Was in for a company team lunch: filled up closer to noon. Seems to be locally popular. Menu was compact but had all the essentials (and they were tasty) Chips are fried in-house. For those particular to salsa: 'Spicy' salsa was relatively spicy however very liquid when it comes to consistency. Friendly and receptive staff.

Tried this spot yesterday for lunch and it was pretty good. I ordered the fried taco platter and my friend had the same with some chili on the side. It was pretty darn tasty. Nice quiet place with some delicious food. They aren't able to serve alcohol at the moment but I had a strawberry fanta, it was sooo good. I will for sure be back!

I've wanted to try La Fonda El Taquito for quite some time, should've tried them long ago. What a wonderful local KC gem! Family owned charm and the aroma of authentic homestyle recipes greet you immediately when entering the door of this charming Cantina style restaurant. From fresh fried chips and homemade salsa as well as guacamole, to the pork chili, fried tacos, al pastor street tacos, cheese and onion enchiladas, chorizo and eggs...it was all outstanding. Each of the above mentioned dishes are outstanding in their own ways, among the best in KC for our tastes. Super friendly service and wondeful owners as well as reasonably priced make La Fonda El Taquito a new family favorite.

Google
Our server ruined the experience, she cared more about standing in the front talking to her coworkers then serving my family of small children. 25 minutes to get a drink after ordering it is kind of long. After our server mixed up our orders and did not bring us the special, the manager said we should of known better. Make sure to explain in detail a simple order so that you don't get over charged.

Google
Always my favorite spot when craving some authentic Mexican food. Their menudo is supreme. Their fried tacos are the best in the city and exactly like my abuela used to make them. Something feels like home when you’re here. Be nice to the service and they’re treat you like family 💛

Google
Best Mexican restaurant in the city in my opinion. Definitely worth the effort. I come here every time I get a chance.

Google
First time here and definitely won’t be the last! If you’re near the Blvd this is a don’t miss food experience!! We tried a little bit of everything and it was all incredible! Very clean and the staff was friendly and happy!

Google
Losing a star because I'd like to see combo meals for a sit down mexican restaurant. Overall the food was really good and had tons of flavor

Yelp
Best fried tacos and rice! I feel like I'm home here. The wait staff feel more like family and everyone seems to know each other. It's definitely a neighborhood spot. My friends get the el pastor tacos and after their first bite - it's a head nod, a "uh huh, yep". Enchiladas are great too! I love their homemade chips and sauce, I could literally drink their sauce it's so good, reminds me of my best friend's mom's salsa growing up. I always feel welcome here and love the historic building with what looks like the original wood floors. Great carbonation ratio on their pop (or soda for you non-midwesterners). One of my favorite stops in KC.

Yelp
We parked in the designated lot, went to the bakery, went to put our bags in the car, and it had been towed, what a disappointment. What a scam please do not patronize a business that has predatory practices
google avatar

Yelp
Nice small family restaurant. Very good and authentic Mexican cuisine. The enchiladas are good and delicious. Made more with real chile for authentic tastes. Good place to go on Saturday evenings as they have live music however I don't know if they play all the time or occasionally. Please try this place. My favorites are fried tacos, sopa de arroz, enchiladas, and menudo. Server was pleasant and attentive.
google avatar

Phil C.

Yelp
They never answer the phone!! They're mailbox on there phone isn't even set up ! They never have menudo any more !! Unless you miss church as I was told was the only way to get some!! Other patrons heard her say that and said people should not have to make a choice between church and menudo!! Since there is a request for it they should make more for the customers!!!

John L.

Yelp
Do not patronize this establishment. My family parked in the designated lot on back. Went to the bakery next door and went to our car to drop off our bags before heading in to the restaurant. MY CAR WAS TOWED! When you talk to the tow lot they literally say they are in cahoots with the restaurant. Seems pretty predatory and scammy
google avatar

Tessa R.

Yelp
I love coming here! I love fried tacos and La Fonda hits the spot! I also really love the chips!

Erin L.

Yelp
this place is running some kind of scam with their tow service company. We parked in their parking lot and went to the bakery in the same strip of busines. Gone around 15 mins. Went to drop our goodies off in the car before going there to eat only to find our car was missing/towed. We parked there because we planned on eating there but instead my two kids and elderly grandmother were stuck outside in 35 degrees temps trying to find someone to come rescue us. Gonna cost at min $350 to get my car back not to mention all the hoops you have to jump through to get there. This is how they treat their customers before you even get in the door. someone should investigate this as it sure seems like they are getting some kind of kick backs for towing vehicles. when we went to the business there wasn't any other customers except the owner and all his friends sitting at one table. This is a good way to drive out paying customers. My money could have gone to their establishment but instead I'm paying for a tow. If you want to pay the tow company by card you have to get it a notary... the store next door to La Fonda has a sign on the door that they have a notary on site....how convenient. This is a predatory situation. i wouldn't give my money to any business that does business practices like this.

Yelp
We first started coming here in 1992, but never reviewed it, mostly because we moved away in 2002. This is definitely a family run operation, and the food and drinks are solid Tex Mex staples, with one exception. There Chicken Soup is OUTSTANDING. As are there fried tacos. I understand that those who like pork dig the Tamales, carnitas and the Menudo. The Gold Margaritas are good and we still are fans!
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
One of my favorites and I will continue to return again and again. A local, family owned business and the family feel continues through their customer service. Everyone is friendly and greets you with a smile and treats you like you are one of the fam. in regards to the menu, the chicken soup is the BEST and I have hard time straying from that. If you are looking for a goof fried taco, this is the place to go.

John B.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican food. Staff so friendly cannot get enough of the salsa, tostados and hard shell tacos. I HIGHLY recommend. I will be back next trip to town.

Yelp
Love this place. Fried tacos are awesome and pork chili is spot on. Just pisses me off I can almost never go here because they are closed on M, T, W,

Yelp
My favorite margarita in town. One of the owners is usually here to bartend and she is a sweetheart! The one with the spiky hair! She really cares about her business. Enjoy!

Yelp
Good family owned Mexican option on Southwest Blvd with friendly staff, good variety of menu options, fair prices, and a great location. I went with the Fried Taco Platter and it was delicious and filled me up. Even with so many great options in the area, I would go back to La Fonda!

Yelp
We went to La Fonda to celebrate my step-dad's birthday. First, our service was fantastic! Fast, friendly, and accommodating. We brought a cake from home and they happily provided us with with a knife to cut and serve it and plates to eat it off of. The margaritas were fine, as was the food. I had the tacos al pastor. Nothing to write home about, but not bad. The service is definitely what made the visit 4 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
Wet good and friendly service. The food came out quick and the flavors were really good. Defiantly recommend and return

Yelp
Along Southwest Blvd you can find many authentic Mexican restaurants, most are very good, some are pretty average. Surprisingly, La Fonda falls with the latter. The atmosphere and decor are warm and inviting, the place just plain feels good. Comfortable is a good thing. The menu, while not overly big, should cover whatever your south of the border culinary desires may be - and at very reasonable prices. Service is good as long as your party is not too big, then it can slow down and stuff gets missed. Average comes to mind with the chips and salsa and continues throughout the menu. Not that the food does not taste good, because it does, but it can be a bit bland for my taste. There is a parking area around back, but do not be surprised if you end up on the street. But that is not unusual along Southwest Blvd. A full bar and good table placement go far in that comfortable feel. You never feel like you are sharing your meal with the folks at the next table. Prices are very reasonable. A couple should be able to have a nice meal and a drink for around $25.00 which is not bad. I do not see myself rushing back as there are other Mexican restaurants nearby that I prefer more. But if pressed by social responsibilities or long lines elsewhere, it would be OK.

Yelp
Only visited this place once. That particular visit wasn't awful. Unfortunately, it wasn't that noteworthy either. Should probably visit a few more time and order some different things.

Yelp
Overall, a pretty good place. Salsa and guacamole are excellent, enchiladas and taquitos very tasty. Great drinks. This time I decided to try something new. I got the fajitas. Not a good pick. I got a mix of beef and chicken. The dish came cold to luke warm and tasted bland and the meat was dry. Two tortillas to an order, also coId. I think the meat was precooked and added to some grilled vegetables, the hottest thing on the plate, and warmed up. Not the steaming sizzling presentation seen at most restaurants that serve this dish. Not something I can recommend here, which is surprising. Oh well, I will not order again in the future. Sopapillas were a super yummy end to the meal - always a winner here. I'll be back.

Jay R.

Yelp
Amazing and authentic family owned business. Just sad that they aren't open more often!

Yelp
I ordered the enchiladas and I immediately regretted it after the first bite. The sauce was thin and had a familiar taste of pasta sauce. I asked for chips and salsa before the meal because I observed other customers partaking. However, as I was given my bill, it turns out the chips were not complimentary, and I had been charged. I recommend skipping this restaurant and visiting other restaurants on the Boulevard.

Yelp
Win some, lose some. This was a definite loss. Alan's brother Bob isn't fond of Mexican food, so we decided to take Lois out for lunch to a Mexican restaurant as a treat. Alan and I both researched restaurants and I came up w/ one and he came up w/ another. Unfortunately, while we were at the Nelson, Lois's niece called w/ her Realtor's recommendation of this place. He seemed knowledgeable, so we discarded the fruits of our research and came here. When we saw on the front of the menu that the surname of the family that runs the restaurant is the same as the Realtor, I felt scammed. I don't know that it *is* the same family, but there's a high index of suspicion and I'm sorry we didn't just leave at that point. We ordered chips and salsa. The chips smelled stale when they were served but tasted fine. The salsa (we ordered mild) was pureed and tasted mostly of tomatoes. I got a container of hot salsa, which improved it some, but it remained unimpressive. Alan ordered chicken fajitas, Lois ordered a beef tostada and I ordered pork flautas, which came w/ rice and refried beans. The pork was dry and I ate 3 of the 4 flautas and some of the rice and beans. None of us was impressed w/ our food, although Lois and Alan agreed the guacamole was good. I didn't have any. All in all, Alan and I have had much better Mexican food in Berkeley, whether it be an old school place like Juan's or a newer one like Picante. This food struck us as lackluster and w/o care and we regretted being steered away from places that might have given a better representation of Kansas City Mexican food.

Yelp
I can't understand the negative reviews. I really can't. La Fonda is small place that is gets pretty busy around lunch time. The feel inside is very "authentic" including the colors, decor and music. It feels more like a bar than a restaurant, but the atmosphere is very lively. The owner's husband seated us promptly when we arrived and fresh, hot chips arrive quickly at our table as well. One unique thing about this place is the fact that you visit the salsa bar to get your own salsa. I love it because it gives the freedom to combine hot and mild to suit your taste. Everyone in our party order a la carte. The food comes out fast and it's very tasty. I was a fan of the deep fried tacos that were topped with lettuce, sauce and some parmesan cheese. I also had a chicken flauta that was very good and a bean tostada as well. No one had bad food, in fact we all wish we would have ordered more. Ignore the bad reviews on this place and hit it up for lunch sometime. My only complaint is regarding the specials listed on the table. We assumed the specials were lunch (that's what most places do, right?), but when the bill arrived we learned that the special was for after 4pm. I guess you are rewarded for venturing into that part of town after dark. But still, 4 of us had lunch for around $20...you can't beat it!

Yelp
Went there yesterday and got 3 tacos and a small cheese dip.$7 and they were the best tacos I've every had. If you don't eat there it's your own fault. The best in town!
google avatar

Yelp
It was a Hot summer day, my friend and I were looking for a place near by to get frozen margaritas. We stumbled across this restaurant and glad we did. We had their specialty margarita: mango and strawberry. These were soo good! You couldn't taste the tequila, but you felt it right away when you tried to stand up to go to the bathroom! We also munched on a full order of there guacamole and homemade chips.
google avatar

Yelp
I'll give them a 4's just for Taco Thursday. They are really tasty. And only a buck. Great service. Great chips and salsa. I'd definitely go back for a taco.
google avatar

Yelp
Good cheap food, had the special today $1 tacos & $1 street tacos while royals are playing

Yelp
Love this place! Have been coming here for years. Food is always delicious, margaritas are perfect! Waitstaff is always friendly. Yes, sometimes you have to wait a little while for food but it is worth it! Reasonable prices, remarkable food. My top pick for authentic Mexican food in Kansas City!
google avatar

Yelp
Just okay. Not the worst Mexican I've had, but not the best. There are some really great Mexican joints in KC, and I was hoping this place would pull through since it's part of "little Mexico", but overall I was a little disappointed. Chips and salsa will cost you, and they charge you for a chip refill and salsa refill (you get one chip refill for free if you order an entree). You also have a discounted chip/salsa for ordering an entree. I had the fried chicken tacos which came with refried beans and rice. The tacos were pretty good, but the chicken was more in whole pieces rather than what I was expecting (shredded). The beans tasted way too much like lard for me to enjoy them and the rice was a bit lacking in flavor. I will say though their hot salsa was so good! And the chips were addicting. I wish I could give this place more credit, but I just wasn't too crazy about it. Maybe I'll come back another time, but right now it's not on my list.

Yelp
Different style of enchiladas then experienced in New Mexico, none the less a very good variance in enchilada preparation and cooking method. The flavor was good. In much delightspicy salsa was served without request.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
Cute place! Wonderful staff, fantastic and excellent food quality, and wonderful prices. Mother's Day weekend and they gave all the ladies a red rose. We will be back!

Rose E.

Yelp
Great family-owned Mexican restaurant. Been going there for over 20 years. Great food and drinks, excellent service and very reasonable prices. During Covid we've been getting a lot of carryout, but love eating in when we can. Sometimes have great live music. Try it!
google avatar

Yelp
this is where my mexican family goes for mexican food. love the flautas and fried tacos.

Yelp
We happened upon this choice when another was not available. Best "accident"! Wonderful food, superb service, they let us veg and enjoy. We were welcome and assisted at every level. Will be back!

Yelp
I'm a little surprised to see a lot of negative reviews here. Now I won't say it's the best place to have Mexican in KC, but it certainly is better than two star. You have to know what to get here to really appreciate it. The bean dip is good if you like refried beans. Deep fried tacos aren't the most common thing to come by, at least good ones in KC. They do have good tacos here. The taquitos served with guacamole and sour cream are also good. Chalupas and tostadas are also recommended. This is a regulars place, they will cater to you if they know you. Now, that's not what first time diners want to hear, so just go with a regular and they can guide you through the experience. When ordering margaritas, make sure to order them "special". That is with Gran Marnier and Triple Sec in them along with a good tequila like Cazadores or Conmemorativo.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not an easy 5-star giver but this joint always tops itself and I love the staff. I came here a few Sundays ago with my aunts and uncles and cousin to have menudo and breakfast. The menudo is some of the best in town and the huevos con chorizo is just like when I was a kid. Love the atmosphere on Sundays too with the elderly Mexcian-American families having menudo and Mexican breakfast. Reminds of me of when I was a boy.

Yelp
Okay, first: I cannot understand why there are only 25 reviews of this place, it's been here for like 25 years. Second: tex mex of the lovely owners-have-been-in-MO-a-long-time comfort food. I have been here many, many times, as I worked for a firm which had a group lunch every Friday, usually here. I like it. Here's what I like: The fried tacos are pretty good, ground beef crimped in a tortilla and fried somehow, pried open and lettuce stuffed in. Sprinkled with cotija, the dry parmesan-type sort. But you should try some of the other things. The chicken soup is great, as is the soupy-bean, cilantro and onion. Good carnitas, and that platter is like three meals. They often have a chile verde enchilada special and that's also worthwhile. Plus an extremely cheap lunch special menu with three or four combo choices, the taco and etc. And if you must, the burrito spread is a good ol fashioned midwest tex mex classic, smothered in cheese and draped in a pretty good mild chile-tomato sauce. There's a salsa bar, and the sauces are good, but simple. Try the extra hot for a really nice, hot and slightly chile bitter burn. Good guacamole on the menu too, can get a half order. And the staff are really, really nice.

Yelp
I'm surprised to see so many bad reviews here. El Taquito has been a staple in my diet since I was able to eat solid food and I've actually been coming here since before I could do that. It's the favorite Mexican restaurant of everyone in my family. My parents actually had their Rehearsal Dinner here in 1990. They also like to joke about one visit, a couple years later, when I gave them their first dose of the reality of parenthood when I was an infant and apparently did not care for the live Mariachi band playing that night and screamed my head off, forcing them to take their food to go.Luckily they decided to go back when I was a bit older. The owners are the nicest people and truly love what they do and that shows in the quality of the food. I love their specialty: the chicken fried tacos, which are flour tortillas stuffed with shredded chicken that are then deep fried to make the tortillas crisp and puffy. Then they put lettuce, salsa, and grated cotija cheese on top and serve them with rice and beans. Their regular fried tacos, flautas, tamales, carnitas, taquitos, and chicken soup are also great. And the majority of their dishes are less than ten dollars, so you really can't go wrong here. If you're craving some authentic Mexican or even some great Tex-Mex, head down to the Boulevard and give them a shot.

Yelp
Love the staff, very friendly-a real family joint. They have a salsa bar with 4 different kinds and jalapenos to add. Food is fantastice, my favorite are the fajitas and carnitas. I always measure Mexican food on the chips and salsa, they have the best by far in KC.
google avatar

Yuly W.

Yelp
Delish!!! Margarita was fantastic!! Very authentic Mexican food. Ordered carne a la parrilla, was perfect!!
google avatar

Garrett N.

Yelp
Chips tasted like they were cooked in stale oil. Chicken burrito had dark meat. Staff weren't overly welcoming & yelled across the room for us to be seated when we walked in. A guy who appeared to be the owner/manager smoked right outside the front door (which was open) causing smoke to roll right back into the restaurant.
google avatar

Diamond D.

Yelp
This place feels more like a bar and hangout even though it is a true Mexican restaurant with a number of tables and a large menu to prove it. La Fonda is darkly lit and multi-leveled. The food isn't very special unfortunately. I think a lot of people like this place because it is kind of a neighborhood institution. The staff are indeed very friendly and take care of you with just the right amount of attention. There is a large bar area and periodic live music. It might be fun to stop in some night, throw back some mediocre margaritas and check out the west side scene.
google avatar

Melinda B.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere. Very warm and welcoming and there is parking just for the customers out back. This was our first time eating at La Fonda, it was myself and my 24 year old son. The owner came out, greeted us and visited for a bit. The chips and salsa were okay.Just okay. they give you two different salsas. One of them is not spicy and the other is slightly spicy. I'm one of who those people who likes chunky salsa and this is not so much. So I guess it's a matter of preference. I also ordered the guac as an appetizer and it was pretty good. They don't give you a whole lot but the taste was very good and it tasted pretty fresh. My son ordered an enchilada platter and I ordered the tostadas. Both were pretty darned good. I really liked the crispiness of the shells and the toppings were nice too. My son polished off the enchiladas in no time flat, so I took that as a good thing. The sides were rice and beans and both were fine. I think we'll return. She said they have lots of specials during the week and I love a good deal. Overall it was a nice meal. Best Mexican food I've ever had? No. But good enough to go again? I do believe so. And it does seem like one of those places that will get better with repeat visits. I would like to try some of their other menu choices.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and decor, good service, food meh. The meat was unseasoned and the salsa watery - the way Americans like it, right? I had the pork flautas plate and didn't realize they were deep fried. That may work with Mars Bars, but the flautas? You know those tiny rubber bits they put in some kiddie playgrounds? Now stuff a bunch of them in a very thin PVC pipe fry them. Okay the oil was fresh, as was the sour cream, lettuce, rice and re-fried beans. And their Negro Modelo was on tap! All ingredients for a great meal, so the meal wasn't a total loss. Next time, nothing deep fried! And maybe a margarita, if I can ignore the luscious Negro Modelo. Oh, and it's noisy and loud. Fun noisy/loud, but we were there early in the evening.
google avatar

Karla M.

Yelp
We ordered Carnitas and Chicken Soup. They were both amazing. They charge $1 for chips. They don't have horchata or cheese dip. Really casual place.
google avatar

Angie D.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area! The lunch specials are great, the chips are fresh and crispy, you get both, hot and mild sauce and the prices are great ! The only draw back is the parking, it is always hard to find a spot but just circle around a few times till something opens up....it is worth it !

Yelp
SW Boulevard is loaded with many good Hispanic restaurants. Here you will find a good fried corn taco. Actually one of the beat fried tacos I have found. One salsa has a good bite of heat and the other has good flavor. Mixed together they make a great salsa. Beware though, the chips and salsa are not complimentary like most places. The charge is minimal, but not explained when the waitress asks if you want them while handing you menus. The all pastor is not my favorite. Actually, I wouldn't order it again. I found it interesting that it was very similar to a food truck I recently tried. Instead if a marinated pork, it was more a pork with sauce added as it was grilled. Not cool and not that great. Service was OK. Nothing special, nothing bad. Prices are good. Their are really good things and not so good things. Give the fried tacos a try.

Nick W.

Yelp
Taco Bell quality for gourmet prices. Expected so much more but was really let down. Service seemed pushy and food wasn't great. Charging for chip refills? Seriously?

Yelp
This is a review of my first visit to this spot, despite living in KC my entire life, so forgive the brevity and ignorance. I'm a soup-addict. I spend probably 30 dollars a week on it. The chicken soup on La Fonda's menu is worth the visit alone. Rich broth, chicken, rice, avocado. Add a squeeze of lime, some chiles toreados and some corn tortillas and you've got some pretty incredible comfort/hangover food. Service was friendly and not overly attentive. 20 oz. draft beers for ~4 bucks. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu and "try" more of the really great soup.

Susie M.

Yelp
It was first time at this restaurant. Our waitress/owner was great. The service she provided was over the top. The food was fabulous & authentic. From the chips /salsa to the flan everything was delicious. Thursday's is taco day. We might have to go back for that. Either way we will be back!
