On the Grid : La Fromagerie

"While it may be one of the lone non-Italian establishments on College St., it knows cheese better than anyone else. Now in its 11th year, La Fromagerie sells a dizzying array of cheeses from France, Quebec, Ontario, England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Corsica, and Greece. You name it, they probably have it. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about their products and will give you their full and absolutely undivided attention when helping you find the right pick for your meal or party; a high level of service we haven't experienced in many places outside of Europe. They also carry specialty breads, oils, vinegars, and meats to suggest perfect pairings and unlock the cheese's full flavour." - Sid Lee

Ah, this is a fantastic cheese shop with a wide selection from France and Quebec. The owner was very nice and knowledgeable - helped me choose, and provided samples. The Brebirousse d'Argental from Lyon made with sheep's milk was pure decadence!! Treat yourself.

Robert is a true gentleman and extremely knowledgeable about his product. He will recommend some delicious lesser known cheeses and give informed advice about how to serve. I love his excellent cornichons. The pastries are fresh daily. This charming little cheese shop is a jewel in our stellar neighbourhood.

My local favourite for service and expertise! Great variety of unique and rare rotating cheeses from France and Quebec. Simply phenomenal, this place should be your first stop for any cheese board when entertaining guests or having a picnic.

Service was not so good. The mister behind the counter was not so friendly to chat even though we spoke French. We knew what cheeses we wanted, and we felt like we were burdening them by buying it. They have selections of cheeses from France that is hard to find here, but we bought the 24mo comte and it was extremely stale and dry. You are also paying 3x the price you would pay in France (I understand there is import fees to get this to Canada) but the quality of the cheese is lacking. If I am paying extra for cheese from France, I would expect it to taste like it does in France.

I honestly don't know enough about cheese to compare it to anything else but we come here like once a month it's always delicious. Robert is always super kind and let's us try lots of cheeses and is always so helpful. Places like this are what make this city so wonderful.
